Bruce Presents: Duchamp to De Kooning, Kahlo to Koons: 100 Years, 100 Works of Art
January 9, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
$30 – $45Can a single work of art symbolize a year in history? Renowned art historian Dr. Agnes Berecz faced this dilemma while writing “100 Years, 100 Works of Art: A History of Modern and Contemporary Art” (Prestel, 2019), which presents and thoroughly details one work of art, to sum up every year between 1918 and 2018. Join Dr. Berecz – along with Katja Zigerlig, Vice President of Fine Art, Wine & Collectibles at Berkley One – for a lively discussion of the criteria that guided the choices found in the book.
In a twist, author Berecz will invite the audience on 10 artworks – one for each decade covered in the volume. Dr. Berecz will show 10 pairs of images, representing one year in each decade. Berecz will give a brief primer on both works of art shown and will explain why they were her “semi-finalists” for a work of art that represented that particular year.
Berecz will then ask the audience to vote, by a show of hands, for which artwork they think she ultimately chose to signify that year, before revealing the work of art she chose – and why she chose it.
Following the audience interaction portion of the evening, Berecz and Zigerlig will delve further into “100 Years, 100 Works of Art” before opening up the conversation to take questions from the audience.
Doors open 6:20 pm; reception begins at 6:30 pm, followed by panel and Q&A starting at 7:00 pm.
