SUMMARY:Joanne Freeman: New York Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is thrilled to announce New York Conversation\, an upcoming exhibition of new work by Joanne Freeman. New York Conversation is Freeman’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. The show will be accompanied by a group show curated by Freeman titled Betty and Veronica. They will run concurrently from January 5th – February 11th\, 2023. \n  \n“New York Conversation references my studio process\, and metaphorically describes the random thoughts\, snippets of conversation\, lyrics and memories that ebb and flow over the course of a painting. Visual signs\, nostalgia and the emotional residue of color\, guide my aesthetic choices\,” Freeman says. While intuitive\, Freeman’s stencil-like forms and irregular hard-edge curves harken Modernism and minimalist sensibilities. This is heightened by a palette of saturated primary colors\, or monochromatic works.   “My paintings reference forms found in architecture and design\,” she says.  “I create compositions based on loose geometry and layered saturated colors. The hard edge process of cutting shapes and layering color onto treated raw linen\, recalls qualities of mid-century low-tech graphics\, color field painting and collage\,” she continues.  \n  \nThe forms are hard-edged while still breathy and organic.  The subtle transparencies at the edges of the forms and the contrast of the brushstrokes across the tooth of linen reveal the artist’s hand. “When applying oil paint to linen I try to accentuate the inherent qualities of both mediums\,” she says. “ I consider both the transparency and opacity of the colors\, how they abut and overlap\, and how they respond to the textured tooth of the linen.” She is mindful of each medium’s materiality when painting.  Her saturated colors in either gouache or oil paint are absorbed by the handmade paper or linen\, enhancing the modernist flatness of her forms and use of space. “My reductive abstract paintings are about the beauty of singular color\, the impact of pure abstract forms and the quiet order that cuts through the noise\,” Freeman says.  \n  \nJoanne Freeman has had solo exhibitions in galleries around the United States\, and shown at The Queens Museum\, Zillman Art Museum University of Maine\, The Painting Center\, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. She’s a 2021 recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant\, and the Vice President of the American Abstract Artists organization. She has her M.A in Studio Art from New York University\, and lives and works in New York City. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Heather Stivison\, “Ebb & Flow”\, a Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In this her third New York City solo exhibition\, Heather Stivison explores the intersection of environmental science and visual art with a series of immersive paintings of the ocean. \nStivison paintings capture the essence of water—something clear and colorless\, with its shape formed entirely by the external forces of objects\, land\, wind\, gravity. Searching for water’s most primary qualities\, she uses light\, color\, form\, shape\, line\, to engender a sense of water. Fluidity\, reflections\, rhythms are evident in her ocean surface paintings. Stivison is fascinated by the reflections and patterns created by the coastal ocean surface. She paints variations on patterns\, exploring how much she can change them and still maintain the sense that the subject is surface water. \nCurator and director of Manhattan Arts International Renee Phillips writes: \n“Stivison ventures beyond nature’s physical boundaries into abstraction with the profusion of free-flowing biomorphic patterns and tonal ranges. In her paintings the innate attributes of water evolve into metaphors\, symbolism and visual poetry.” \nThe exhibition includes a massive 110-inch quadriptych that explores the sense of weightlessness and mystery that she finds in the imagining unknown ocean depths. Other paintings explore surface water patterns as abstract design. \nIndependent curator Kathy Imlay writes: \n“Stivison’s paintings have a luminous glow—accomplished by the artist building up layer upon layer of viscous paint\, which she pours\, smears\, scrapes and otherwise manipulates to create fields of color that conjure the watery depths of the ocean or intergalactic space\, depending on the palette.” \nSome of the paintings on view are the result of her multi-year\, grant funded collaboration with Noah Germolus\, a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute who was researching ocean chemistry. Stivison created two paintings about him and his work\, and four five-foot paintings that interpret his research data in paint. \nThe collaboration led to a unique special feature of this exhibition. After Stivison interpreted his data in paint\, he in turn\, interpreted four of her paintings in music. The exhibition includes an on-demand sound installation of original jazz music composed and performed by Germolus. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Robert Braczyk: Cardinal Directions
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: January 27 – February 21\, 2026\nOpening Reception: Thurs.\, January 29\, 2026\, 5PM-8PM\nArtist Talk: Saturday\, February 14\, 2026\, 3PM-4PM\nGallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday\, 11AM-6PM \nBowery Gallery is pleased to present “Cardinal Directions\,” an exhibition of new sculpture by Robert Braczyk.  \nFor many years a prize-winning figurative sculptor\, in recent years Braczyk has turned to abstraction. In his new work—most about 24 inches high—he assembles various tree elements into vertical compositions that echo figural forms\, but whose abstract vocabulary of open volumes and discontinuous contours suggests the possibility of multiple allusions. Each work evinces a powerful spatial tension between the cardinal point from which it is begun and the complex three-dimensional image that Braczyk builds with primary thrust\, axis\, and meridian.  \nBraczyk’s trajectory from figure to abstract figure may be seen as a temporal through line connecting the events of a life. The artist’s comment that he brings all his life’s experiences into the studio reminds us that in the long arc of his career\, the spatial and temporal are never far apart. \nView the exhibition website. \n  \nBowery Gallery\n547 W. 27th Street\, Suite 508\nNew York\, NY 10001 \n  Save

SUMMARY:LEO VILLAREAL: COSMOS
DESCRIPTION:An homage to the late Cornell astronomy professor Carl Sagan\, Cosmos is a site-specific installation by New York–based artist Leo Villareal (born 1967)\, a pioneer in the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and computer-driven imagery. His signature pieces explore complex movement and dazzling patterns created by points of light using his own computer software. \n \nVillareal – Cosmos – Johnson Museum – Cornell final from Walter Patrick Smith\, AIA LEED A on Vimeo. \nPlanning for Cosmos began in November 2010\, when Villareal—along with the project architect\, Walter Smith\, and donors Lisa and Richard Baker—worked with Johnson Museum staff to determine the optimal location for the installation. The ceiling of the Sherry and Joel Mallin Sculpture Court was chosen for its high visibility not only on campus but also from the city of Ithaca. After studying the Museum’s architectural plans and considering structural and aesthetic aspects of the installation\, the artist’s team returned to Cornell in April 2012 to install a nine-foot-square mock-up. Installation of the final piece took several weeks\, with twelve thousand energy-efficient LEDs on a gridded framework attached to the ceiling of the sculpture court. A zero gravity bench was designed by the artist for viewers to fully immerse themselves in the viewing experience and to foster a more communal involvement with his installation. Villareal gave a public lecture to mark the opening of the installation. \nVillareal’s works reinterpret fundamental components of such twentieth-century art movements as pop\, minimalism\, conceptual\, and post-painterly abstraction while responding to the ingenuity and imagination that defines technology in the twenty-first century. Among his most notable site-specific works are the illumination of the exterior of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (2006)\, Multiverse in the Concourse walkway between the East and West Buildings at the National Gallery of Art (2008)\, and Sky at the Tampa Museum of Art (2009). His largest installation to date is The Bay Lights\, illuminating the West Span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge for its 75th anniversary in 2013. \nAndrea Inselmann\nCurator of Modern and Contemporary Art \n\nImage:\nLeo Villareal\nCosmos\, 2012\nWhite LED Lights\, custom software\, and electrical hardware; site-specific installation.\nAcquired through the generosity of Richard Baker\, Class of 1988\, and Lisa Baker.\n2012.056\nPhoto: James Ewing \n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Rive by Jon Verney
DESCRIPTION:RIVE: A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION \nJon Verney a photographer whose work engages in manipulated found imagery\, an interplay between the images of forgotten amateur photographers and the powerful sensation of abstract colors and fractal patterns and reticulation of the original. \nHis work is a reiteration of the dadaist practice of found objects and their subsequent metamorphoses after entering his possession. Using the contemporary material that is a Polaroid and subjecting them to methods of tangible and controllable manipulation of the photographic emulsion\, Verney draws out of them the untapped potential that lay dormant. \nHe sources his materials\, the Polaroids\, from flea markets\, shops\, or bought in bulk online. Blowing these small personal images up to a large scale reinvents the originals into something unintended at their initial creation\, giving a commentary on personal versus public. \nThe disassociation with the subjects and the original photographers’\, whose work allows Verney the ability to create his work\, mirrors that of Jacqui Kenny or Doug Rickard and their respective use of Google Street View\, a global resource allowing those two photographers to create artwork from the comfort of their own homes using the resources of our modern society. \nThe subject of this body of work\, Rive\, engages in the theme of a schism\, a fault line\, a separation of two worlds that butt up against one another\, like the waves of the ocean lapping against the shore. The banal common-place nature of these amateur photographs is at the same time both obscured behind\, and obscuring the organic blooms of his manipulations\, giving the sensation of a reciprocity between reality and surreality. \nJoin us for the Opening Reception! \nThursday\, February 7\, 2019 from 6:00-8:00pm \nMake sure to also stop by the Artist Talk! \nThursday\, April 18\, 2019 from 6:00-7:00pm \nJon Verney is a visual artist whose practice interweaves the materiality of painting\, photography\, and film. SUMMARY:Jan-Ole Schiemann: A Different Pose
DESCRIPTION:Kasmin is pleased to present A Different Pose\, the gallery’s first solo exhibition of new paintings by Cologne-based artist Jan-Ole Schiemann. Schiemann’s paintings are grounded in both gestural abstraction and the history of 20th-century animation\, aspects that combine to imbue his work with a rare sense of kinetic energy. Half-formed\, simultaneously disappearing and reappearing shapes suggest that somewhere amidst the lines\, there are figures tumbling\, colliding\, or fighting obscured by clouds of smoke. As a result of Schiemann’s meticulous\, layered application of charcoal\, oilstick\, ink and acrylic\, the works have the illusion of both a sculptural and a digital depth. The artist’s first solo exhibition at Kasmin will be comprised of new medium-scale and monumental paintings\, as well as the debut of a new series of works on paper. \nSchiemann’s process begins with the collection of references—cut-outs from cartoon strips\, elements from his own drawing process—which the artist then collages onto transparencies and projects against the canvas. Using primarily ink on the unprimed surface\, Schiemann uses sweeping gestures to build the dynamic base of the picture plane before moving on to more precise\, illustrative detailing. The works are then built up to fruition carefully\, introducing exuberant color and spontaneity as Schiemann reimagines the projected configurations. \nThe series of works on paper demonstrates Schiemann’s commitment to drawing\, and its fundamental place in his oeuvre. Appearing as a consolidation of fragments of many sketches bought together into balanced coherence\, the works give further insight into Schiemann’s process and highlight the strength of his forms. \nJan-Ole Schiemann has mounted solo shows recently at CHOI&LAGER Gallery\, Seoul\, South Korea (2018); Nino Mier Gallery\, Los Angeles (2017\, 2015) and Half Gallery\, New York\, (2015). Schiemann was also included in curated exhibitions such as Cliché\, Almine Rech Gallery\, New York (2018); Abstract/Not Abstract\, curated by Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian\, Moore Building\, Miami (2017); Prinz – the Ghosts are Outside\, Kreuzberg Pavilion\, Berlin (2015); and 17 Abstract Paintings\, Warhus Rittershaus\, Cologne (2014) amongst others.  He is a graduate of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen and Andreas Schulze (2007-2013) and currently lives and works in Cologne\, Germany. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Ivan Plusch: The Promise of Eternal Life
DESCRIPTION:Ivan Plusch \nThe Promise of Eternal Life \nMarch 9 to April 27\, 2019 \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, March 9th\, 6:00 to 8:00 pm \n  \nDeborah Colton Gallery is pleased to present Ivan Plusch: The Promise of Eternal Life\, a solo exhibition featuring accomplished\, young Russian artist\, Ivan Plusch. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of Ivan Plusch’s work in the United States. The exhibition opens Saturday\, March 9th\, with a public reception from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Ivan Plusch will be attending the reception and greeting our guests. \nIvan Plusch\, born in 1981\, is a young Russian artist on the rise and is part of the Nepokorionnye Group. He is based in St. Petersburg and has studied in various art schools including the State Academy of Art and Design\, the Roerich Art School and the PRO ARTE Institute. Ivan Plusch’s work has been exhibited throughout Russia and worldwide including in France\, Italy\, the Netherlands\, South Korea\, the United Kingdom and the Balkans. His work is in prestigious private and public collections world-wide. \nIvan Plusch finds the visual interpretation of eternal life as a phenomenon in his works. His characters appear to be in the ordinary reality\, which is depicted mechanically through the creation of sponge pattern or monotonous destruction of the background. These characters become the flow of paintings which is symbolizing the moving of time and impossibility to stay in one place or in one moment forever. He suggests that humans who are able to create around them their own\, imaginary protective world that takes them from the ordinary reality to the virtual space have the hope to live in this vision forever\, whereby they can remain in one point in time and may they may feel the promise of eternal life. \nStruggling with mild autism since childhood\, Plusch has a special perception on life that is original and inspiring. His success as an artist reveals that we all can identify with how important it is to slow down and appreciate each interaction\, each moment and cherish our best memories in our hearts forever. \n  \nDeborah Colton Gallery is founded on being an innovative showcase for ongoing presentation and promotion of strong historical and visionary contemporary artists worldwide\, whose diverse practices include painting\, works on paper\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, performance\, conceptual future media and public space installations. The gallery aspires to provide a forum through connecting Texas\, national and international artists to make positive change. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Naama Tsabar: Dedicated
DESCRIPTION:Naama Tsabar employs performance\, sculpture\, and photography to subvert the gender roles historically associated with musicianship. In her second exhibition at Kasmin\, Dedicated\, Tsabar further explores these themes by expanding the borders of movement of the female body. For the duration of the exhibition\, Tsabar and a group of female musicians will explore a new vocabulary of movement and sound\, culminating in a performance with Tsabar and her collaborators on the exhibition’s closing night\, May 4\, between 4-6pm. This will be her first performance in New York City since 2017. \nThe exhibition presents three bodies of work that weave together iconic actions and objects from rock music with a more intimate portrayal of the artist’s body and its movement through\, within\, and into the surrounding architecture. Tsabar transforms the gallery space into a site-specific sculptural and sonic installation featuring the broken remains of guitars on the floor\, Melodies of Certain Damage\, connected to the wall-based canvases\, Transitions\, that double as amplifiers. In a series of adjacent photographs\, a female body penetrates and intertwines with walls in the artist’s studio. The motifs of femininity\, gender\, disruption\, destruction\, and reconstruction recur throughout the exhibition. Melodies of Certain Damage takes as its starting point the moment after the climatic break of the electric guitar. By attending to the aftermath\, rather than the destructive act itself\, Tsabar interrogates structures of power\, and reworks the violent act into a new sculptural and performative order. In the quiet of her studio\, Tsabar smashes the bodies of the guitars\, and\, engaging a Dada-esque sense of randomness and play\, maps out the broken pieces where they fall\, affixes the shattered parts to the floor\, and then attaches new strings to reinstate the sculpture’s musical functionality. \nWith the works installed in the gallery\, each Melody is plugged into one of the Transition canvases\, works that Tsabar has repurposed the internal and external components of the amplifier—wires\, speaker\, circuit board—to create a new formal visual experience whilst retaining the object’s ability to broadcast sound. Tsabar then invites a group of female musicians to collaboratively compose a unique composition on the sculptures. Activating the Melodies requires the performers to insert their bodies\, either sitting or lying\, into the spaces between the fragments. By dispersing the centralized phallic order of the objects and the position of the body in relation\, Tsabar and the performers assume the reclining physical position as an act of sensual\, creative and non-hierarchical power. \n  Save

SUMMARY:David Wiseman: Plants\, Minerals\, And Animals
DESCRIPTION:Kasmin is pleased to present a major exhibition of new work by artist and designer David Wiseman (b. 1981). Plants\, Minerals\, and Animals is Wiseman’s first solo presentation at the gallery and will be on view at 515 West 27th Street between March 14 – April 27\, 2019. Bringing together designs conceived and forged in the artist’s Los Angeles studio over the course of the last fifteen years\, the exhibition acts as a culmination of Wiseman’s career thus far. \nWiseman’s work draws inspiration from his fascination with the natural world\, global decorative arts traditions\, and a reverence for honoring timeless craft techniques. Far from reproducing historic design\, however\, he breathes new life into interiors and environments. Porcelain cherry blossom ceilings\, bronze patterned filigree folding screens\, and polished marble and terrazzo inlay furniture affirm and perpetuate the relevance ornament and beauty can play in contemporary architecture and life. \nRooted in an imagined world of drawing\, Wiseman’s creations blossom outward from the page to become sculpture. A deep respect for process\, cultivated during his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design\, demands that Wiseman is intensely involved in every aspect of the production from the initial sketches to bronze casting\, porcelain sculpting\, firing and glazing\, and handmade terrazzo\, all of which happen in the studio in an organic flurry of activity. \nMany of the works are developed with Wiseman working on instinct to configure the pieces by drawing from an encyclopedic collection of prior-made casts formed from the natural world and sculpted forms. Acting as an index of Wiseman’s vocabulary and interest\, Five Panel Screen (2018)\, a large bronze folding screen\, collages nature in varying degrees of abstraction: microscopic forms transmute into sea waves that meld into a trellis of macrame rope\, held together by patterns inspired by traditional Japanese drawings. Lost Valley Mirror (2019)\, an impressive standing mirror\, features a sleeping Capuchin-like monkey resting on its peak\, is framed by a slender twisting tree trunk—an imagined hybrid that integrates several plant and fungi species from Wiseman’s native Los Angeles. \nElsewhere in the exhibition\, Cloud Garden Canopy (2019)\, a ceiling-mounted light sculpture\, depicts an inverted bed of delicately crafted porcelain and dramatic rock crystal. It hangs above the Large Lattice Vortex Dining Table(2019)\, a new design realized in bronze and glass that employs the organic hexagonal and pentagonal patterns that recur as motifs throughout the exhibition. These abstracted forms\, simultaneously surface and structure\, are balanced by the figuration of works such as Bowerbird Table (2019)\, which takes the eccentric Western New Guinea species as its starting point and reimagines the bird’s mating ritual of collecting forest treasures. Playfully including trinkets that could be gathered from within the studio—a sterling silver frog\, blackberries\, seed pods\, geraniums\, and jali patterns—the work demonstrates both the startling intricacy and devotion to nature that combine to characterize Wiseman’s practice. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Rushern Baker IV: Post-World
DESCRIPTION:Rushern Baker IV seeks to capture the frenetic energy created by today’s socio-political malaise. This energy manifests itself in his paintings through layers of digital collage\, resin\, ceramic tile adhesive and paint. The various media are interwoven\, at odds\, and chaotic\, slowly revealing compositions of destruction. There are hints of collapsing columns\, drones shot down from the sky\, Soviet propaganda posters\, comic books\, fallen structures\, fire\, rocks\, and finally\, ash. At times\, Baker delivers a break in the rubble\, leaving us with a moment to exhale\, observe and ask\, “is this the beginning or the end?” \nFascinated by political theater and the socio-economic ramifications of domestic and foreign policy\, Baker cites structural breakdown as a recurring theme within his practice. If these paintings can engage with the world today\, it is through the complex feeling of vulnerability stirring everywhere\, every minute. Outside of societal unrest\, Baker is heavily influenced by Octavia Butler’s Afrofuturist novels\, most notably Parable of the Sower. He has linked his work to Black abstraction and artists such as Sam Gilliam\, Felrath Hines\, and Jack Whitten. Each canvas serves as a new edition of an ongoing battle\, a commonly shared saga of conflict and discontent. \n\n\nRushern Baker IV (American\, b. 1987) has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally\, including solo exhibitions at Scaramouche Gallery and The Cooper Union in New York City\, Honfleur Gallery in Washington DC\, and in group shows at The Third Line Gallery in Dubai\, The Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte\, NC\, Bowie State University\, MOCADA in Brooklyn\, NY\, Koki Arts in Tokyo\, and Yale University. He received a BFA from The Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in 2009 where he received the Jack Stewart Memorial Prize for Excellence in Painting\, and an MFA from Yale University in 2012\, where he received the Elizabeth Canfield Hicks Award for outstanding achievement in drawing or painting from nature. This is his first solo exhibition with HEMPHILL Fine Arts. \n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Anton Ginzburg: VIEWs
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, March 28\, 2019 from 6 to 8pm \nArtist-in-Conversation with Meghan Forbes: Saturday\, April 13\, 2019 from 2 – 4 pm \nHelwaser Gallery is pleased to present VIEWs\, the first solo exhibition of works with artist Anton Ginzburg. The exhibition introduces the newest body of works by the artist\, which includes the VIEW painting series\, a site-specific mural\, and ceramic sculptures. VIEWs presents Ginzburg’s engagement with the development of modernist-formal vocabulary in Eastern Europe\, which addresses theories of viewing. Marking the inaugural exhibition at Helwaser Gallery’s new location (833 Madison Avenue\, Third Floor)\, the show will be on view March 28–May 23\, 2019\, with an opening reception to be held Thursday\, March 28\, 2019. The core of the exhibition is the VIEW painting series. Executed on wooden panels of two distinct sizes\, each work references diagrammatic representations of the binocular field of human vision. Based on the shape and geometry of the panels\, abstract compositions are developed through color\, plane\, and line. \nIn smaller-scale works\, different planes of color overlap and intersect with each other\, demonstrating the figure and ground perception within each work. In larger works\, Ginzburg draws on the effects of the movement of color through space. Collectively\, the VIEW series analyzes the act of viewing and demonstrates the process through the material practice of painting. \nAlso on show are Polychrome Columns (2018)\, a pair of multi-colored porcelain sculptures measuring 10 feet in height. Segmented into different colored modules\, which are stacked on top of each other\, the columns introduce a spatial dimension to the exhibition. Accompanying these columns is a site-specific mural\, comprising bands of colored lines with mirrored\, glass pieces superimposed over it. Placed in dialogue with the space of the gallery\, these works create a dynamic viewing process\, allowing visitors to immerse themselves within the works. Also presented in the exhibition\, the artist’s earlier video work Color and Line (2013) echoes this notion of space. A playful interpretation of Suprematist paintings and cinematic structure\, the work was filmed in a laundry room\, in between “cuts” of darkness (achieved by switching on and off the lights)\, creating a continuous sequence of color compositions that vary in placement. Ginzburg’s practice explores the direct relationship between the viewer and the process of observing. Through referencing theories of viewing proposed by two artists of historical avantgarde\, Mikhail Matyushin and Władysław Strzeminski\, Ginzburg applies his own methodology to painting\, sculpture\, and video. \nThis inquiry began three years ago during Ginzburg’s residency in Canada in 2016\, where the artist engaged in visual exercises used in the curriculum of the VkHUTEMAS (a modern art and technical school established by the Soviet Union in 1920). These exercises included color and spatial studies\, photography\, and graphic explorations\, which strived to re-animate the avant-garde methodology of the 20th into the present-day context. \nAbout the artist \nAnton Ginzburg (b. 1974\, St. Petersburg\, Russia) is a New York-based artist\, known for his films\, paintings\, sculptures\, and text-based printed work investigating historical narratives and poetic studies of place\, representation\, and post-Soviet identity. He earned a B.F.A. from Parsons School of Design\, The New School and M.F.A. degree from Bard College\, Milton Avery Graduate School of Arts\, Annandale-on-Hudson\, New York. His work has been shown at the 54th Venice Biennale; the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston; Southern Alberta Art Gallery\, Canada; Palais de Tokyo\, Paris; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; White Columns\, New York; Lille 3000\, Euralille\, France; and the first and second Moscow Biennales. His films have been screened at the Whitechapel Gallery\, London; Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR); Dallas Symphony Orchestra; Nasher Sculpture Center\, Dallas; Les Rencontres Internationales\, Paris; Haus der Kulturen der Welt\, Berlin; and New York Film Festival/Projections among others. \nwww.antonginzburg.com \nAbout the speaker \nMeghan Forbes is currently the C-MAP Fellow for Central and Eastern Europe at The Museum of Modern Art\, New York and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University. She holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Georgia O’Keeffe: Art\, Image\, Style
DESCRIPTION:Through 27 paintings\, 72 portrait photographs\, and 70 original garments\, Georgia O’Keeffe: Art\, Image\, Style inventively shows how this pioneering modern artist developed a fresh style–an artistic voice–that touched everything around her as well as her art. O’Keeffe’s brand of modernism sought simplicity\, distillation\, and clarity. That highly personal aesthetic comes to life in Wichita Art Museum galleries in spring 2019 through comparisons of the artist’s own clothing with striking portraits and stunning artworks. \nGeorgia O’Keeffe: Art\, Image\, Style is organized by the Brooklyn Museum with guest curator Wanda M. Corn\, Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor Emerita in Art History\, Stanford University\, and made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. \nGeorgia O’Keeffe (American\, 1887-1986)\, Black Pansy & Forget-Me-Nots (Pansy)\, 1926. SUMMARY:Natural History
DESCRIPTION:Alan Magee\, Natural History\, 1997\, acrylic and oil on panel\, 16 x 22 inches \nNew York\, NY – From April 4 to May 18\, 2019\, Forum Gallery presents Natural History\, an exhibition of paintings by Robert Bauer\, Linden Frederick\, Alan Magee\, Alyssa Monks\, Guillermo Muñoz Vera\, Brian Rutenberg and Stephanie Wilde. United by their interest in the complex and multi-layered content inherent in the objective imagery of their individual pasts\, each artist uses paint and canvas in a very different\, and very compelling way. \nRobert Bauer uses the language of portrait and landscape to convey the essential\, emotional response he has to past and present. The objectivity of observation unites with the sensitivity of expression in his highly developed and palpably personal paintings and drawings. \nLinden Frederick paints the iconic buildings of his upstate New York\, small-town upbringing. Tinged with nostalgia but always based in clear\, concise reality\, the paintings\, while specific\, seem to bring each viewer to his own memory and association. \nAlan Magee creates poetic compositions from natural and man-made objects whose history\, in his hands\, is palpable. Beginning with the premise that everything is what it seems and not what it seems\, Magee spins his subjects into seemingly simple\, marvelously complex\, peaceful\, contemplative paintings. \nAlyssa Monks places her sumptuous figures in the natural world\, often combining the verdant landscapes of her memory with the human body\, hers and others. The result is a harmonious integration of man and environment. \n\n\nGuillermo Muñoz Vera examines the world around him from the standpoint of his own history as a Chilean born\, naturalized Spaniard in terms of a larger study of human cultural and geopolitical history and its impact on our world today. \nBrian Rutenberg blends the colors and forms of the landscape of his native coastal Carolina with the excitement and passion of action-packed abstraction; the resulting image is uniquely his. \nStephanie Wilde\, who remains dedicated to environmental imperatives in her self-taught practice\, illuminates the inexorable role of nature to inspire woman’s pursuit of progress in her meticulous and fascinating mixed media works. \n### \nNatural History opens on Thursday\, April 4\, 2019 and will be on view through Saturday\, May 18\, 2019. \nForum Gallery is located at 475 Park Avenue at 57th Street\, New York\, NY 10022. SUMMARY:Donald Sultan | Mimosa\, PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS
DESCRIPTION:Donald Sultan Mimosa\, PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS April 4 – May 11\, 2019 Reception: Thursday\, April 4\, 6-8 pm RYAN LEE is pleased to announce Donald Sultan: Mimosa\, PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS\, an exhibition of new work by the acclaimed artist. Inspired by a gift of mimosa blossoms he received from a friend in the South of France\, Sultan began using the structure of the mimosa plant to continue his interrogation of the space between abstraction and representation\, the organic and the industrial\, as well as the history of modern art. The exhibition includes large-scale drawings and monumental paintings\, ranging from four to eight feet wide\, respectively. This is the first exhibition of Sultan’s Mimosa paintings and the show will be accompanied by a catalogue. Sultan executed the paintings and drawings simultaneously\, and as a result they inform each other. Working out the density of charcoal and conte in the drawings first led Sultan to the paintings in which he uses roofing tar and enamel to create a richly textured surface. He continues his use of industrial materials\, such as Masonite and vinyl along with the tar and enamel\, to construct his paintings\, which in their scale\, heft\, and dimensionality\, are sculptural as well as architectural. Their exposed sides and edges reveal the process of their creation. Unlike prior series in which Sultan carved directly into the surface of the painting to generate his imagery\, in the Mimosas he builds up the surface through a series of layering techniques applied directly to the Masonite. In Mimosa June 14 2018\, a cascade of black and brown leaves washes across the eight-by-eight-foot Masonite surface. The range in depth and luminosity of the dark palette is the result of washing the tar with turpentine after its application—a technique Sultan borrowed from his groundbreaking Disaster paintings of the 1980s. Combining fluid gestural brushwork with the precision of stencils and decals\, Sultan creates a composition that is at once explosive and contained. Color plays an especially prominent role in these new works as exemplified by the lush green foliage in Mimosa With Orange and Green Oct 3 2018. In other paintings\, passages of light blue suggest the sundrenched skies of Southern France\, and Sultan’s mimosa blossoms range in color from dark blue\, to orange\, deep green\, and indigo. The circular forms that Sultan makes use of visualize the interconnectedness across the organic and artificial realms\, and link this new body of work to prior series\, such as the Morning Glories\, Buttons\, and Dominoes of the 1990s. The flattened discs have served as the center of a flower\, the holes in a button\, or in the case of the Mimosas\, an entire blossom. Sultan has said\, “the closer you work from reality the more abstract things can get.” In distilling the mimosa plant into the fundamental geometry of its leaves and blossoms\, it becomes something conceptual. It functions as a vehicle for the exploration of visual ideas— the “armature\,” as Sultan has called it\, for a “gestural thought of leaves in general.” \nDonald Sultan (b. 1951 Asheville\, NC) is an internationally recognized artist best known for elevating the still life tradition through the deconstruction of his subjects into basic forms as well as his use of industrial materials. He studied at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill and later received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute\, Chicago. Sultan rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the “New Image” movement\, and his first solo exhibition was mounted in 1977 at Artists Space in New York. He has since exhibited worldwide in solo and group exhibitions\, including the Contemporary Arts Center\, Cincinnati; Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Washington\, DC; Gotlands KonstMuseum\, Sweden; Institute of Contemporary Art\, Tokyo; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Memphis Brooks Museum\, Memphis; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Musée d’art Contemporain\, Montreal; Nationalgalerie\, Berlin; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York; and Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York. His work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; British Museum\, London; Cincinnati Art Museum; Cleveland Art Museum; Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; Detroit Institute of Arts; Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University\, Cambridge; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, Washington\, DC; Ludwig Museum\, Budapest; the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Tokyo; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; National Gallery of Australia\, Canberra; Neuberger Museum at SUNY Purchase\, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Singapore Museum of Art; the Solomon R. SUMMARY:Céleste Boursier-Mougenot\, Liz Glynn\, Robert Grosvenor\, Justin Matherly\, Paul Pfeiffer
DESCRIPTION:Opening on April 4th\, 2019 is a group exhibition of major sculpture by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot\, Liz Glynn\, Robert Grosvenor\, Justin Matherly\, and Paul Pfeiffer\, each inhabiting a discrete part of the gallery. Encompassing a range of material and scale\, the works obscure the boundaries of familiar objects\, traditional narratives\, and normative modes. Using techniques of remaking\, rebroadcasting\, and repurposing\, the artists expose the underside of things presumed known. The exhibition will be on view through May 4th\, 2019 at 524 West 26th Street. There will be an opening reception on Thursday\, April 4th from 6 to 8pm. \nExtracting musical potential from the soundtrack of quotidian life\, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s index\, v.4 (2005/2009) consists of an unaccompanied Pleyel grand piano\, mysteriously playing without a pianist. Wired to a complex\, live feed\, the piano strikes notes based on a predetermined metric for translating data into pitch\, repetition\, and chord. Concretizing as music\, the piece renders enigmatic and affective the mundane functions of the everyday. Boursier-Mougenot states: “It is not a question of putting a sound object on display\, but rather to show the unfolding of a whole system.” \nLiz Glynn studies the ways in which cultural objects of the past embody or challenge values\, power dynamics\, and social systems. Originally conceived for her major exhibition at SculptureCenter\, Afterimage: Cuzco (Golden Maize)reexamines the Spanish conquest and cultural destruction of the Incan Empire—specifically the 1532 ransom of Incan emperor Atahualpa by Francisco Pizarro. Glynn’s golden corn stalks and maize act as literal and poetic surrogates for the massive sums of precious metals that Pizarro demanded as payment. Through their humble materials and imperfect artisanship\, Glynn’s reproductions question their own authenticity and ultimately the narratives that they denote.1 \nFor his recent sculpture Untitled (2018)\, Robert Grosvenorpresents a vehicular object standing upright in the center of a self-contained space. Illuminated from the rear\, the rectangular receptacle is left open on one end\, revealing a brilliant golden interior. Quietly and strangely punctuating the container\, the central structure asserts a matter-of-fact presence\, its cardinal red body reflecting the suffusive amber light. Resisting interpretation as both a discrete and holistic entity\, the work mines the tension between the familiar and the disaffiliated\, eluding semantic specificity. \nJustin Matherly’s works explore the recrudescence of his 2017 monumental presentation\, titled Nietzsche’s Rock—modeled after a pyramidal boulder in Switzerland\, where Friedrich Nietzsche first formulated his thought of Eternal Recurrence in 1881. For his new works\, Matherly recasts the fragmented molds from his public sculpture\, creating discrete pieces with richly varied surfaces—alternately luminous and alabastrine\, or fissured and stained with nuanced hues. Both spectral and material\, the enigmatic forms evoke Nietzsche’s explanation of Eternal Recurrence as “the heaviest weight\,” whispered by demons as they “steal into your loneliest of loneliness”—but conversely also as the path to supreme affirmation. \nFor Paul Pfeiffer’s new work from his Desiderata series\, the artist rebroadcasts televised excerpts from the American game show\, The Price is Right\, on two miniature screens. Through subtle\, digital manipulations\, Pfeiffer maroons its contestations within the stage set\, keying into their emotional vulnerability. Re-contextualized as a Seussical landscape of brash color and kaleidoscopic proportion\, the absurdity of the stage heightens the isolation of its participants and mirrors the unattainable folly of their consumer desires. Empty shelves and prefabricated props bear evidence of aging and wear\, underscoring a sense of manufactured and systematic false promise. \n\n\nMary Ceruti\, “Liz Glynn: RANSOM ROOM\,” exh. cat.\, SculptureCenter\, Long Island City\, NY (2014)\n\n\n  Save
