DESCRIPTION:Miriam Beerman – Rediscover Opens at James Yarosh Associates Gallery \nBeerman\, one of the first women to have a solo show at the Brooklyn Museum\, and who has had exhibitions worldwide\, is the 2022 artist in spotlight at James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery \nHOLMDEL\, NJ—When acclaimed painter Miriam Beerman passed away in February 2022 at the age of 98\, she left a six-decade legacy of humanist expressionist works that are included in the permanent collections of over 60 museums\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Whitney\, LACMA\, Phillips Collection\, National Gallery of Art and Victoria & Albert Museum.  \nA contemporary maker of painterly power objects\, imbuing the paint with profound psychology as well as colorful beauty\, Beerman was a female pioneer in the male-dominated artworld of the 20th century.  \nFueled by curatorial activism in the recent years\, James Yarosh Associates has been hosting shows that re-examine artists who have made a substantial mark during their career in a climate where female artists of the era have been on the verge of being lost to history. On April 23 and 24\, the gallery launches Miriam Beerman – Rediscover\, a retrospective of this prolific artist that includes many of her larger works created in the 1990s. The show is open from noon to 4.  \nWhile male peers dominated the world of 20th-century art\, Beerman’s unique artistic voice catapulted her work to critical recognition in museums and solo shows in her own right. In 1971\, she made history when her exhibition Enduring Beast became one of the first one-woman shows mounted by the Brooklyn Museum. \nShe has won awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Rhode Island School of Design.  \nBeerman is the subject of the 53-minute artist documentary “Miriam Beerman: Expressing the Chaos\,” which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and YouTube and gives an unflinching look at an artist’s lifelong dedication to her craft. \n “Miriam Beerman is a survivor. In her more than 60 years as a groundbreaking artist\, she has overcome personal tragedy to inspire friends\, family\, peers\, patrons and students about how to remain defiant\, creative and strong\,” said Jonathan Gruber\, the film’s director. “Miriam has struggled with her artistic demons to create haunting images that evoke the suffering of generations of victims.” \nBeerman’s work has been compared to that of Goya. It protests injustice and champions the stories of victims—whether they are from Hiroshima\, Vietnam or the Holocaust. However\, it juxtaposes the anguish of her subjects with vibrant\, often ravishing\, use of color. Her painterly approach\, using layers over layers of color—akin to Jackson Pollock’s action paintings—allows a storyline to unfold on the canvas\, one that sometimes blends injustice with a nod to humor in the human condition.  \n“I first saw Miriam Beerman’s art in 1991 at an exhibition at the State Museum in Trenton\, and it resonated with me as important\,” said Yarosh\, who has been representing her work since 2020. “As a younger artist\, I was inspired by how she could paint all those intangible feelings and emotions that haunt artists and sensitive minds. Thirty years later\, having rediscovered Miriam’s body of work as a gallery owner and to see the works that came after\, I am moved by the gravity and resonance of her art as a medium that can convey such human emotion—from humor to heartbreak—and ultimately still provide optimism. \n“Miriam’s colors are pure joy\, and her primal markings created larger-than-life paintings that sit next to you and resonate unlike other painters\,” Yarosh continued. “Her art may demand to be the focus in a room\, but the more time you devote to studying them\, you are rewarded by what they reveal and the empowering energy they radiate. Afterward\, she spent two years in France as a Fulbright Scholar\, working in Atelier 17 and having her painting critiqued by Marcel Brion. In New York\, she studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League and Adja Yunkers at the New School for Social Research. She has had over 30 solo shows\, including at the Brooklyn Museum\, the New Jersey State Museum and the Everson Museum. \nBeerman’s work can be seen in many major collections\, including Metropolitan Museum\, Whitney Museum\, LACMA\, National Gallery of Art\, Phillips Collection\, National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Victoria and Albert Museum\, and the Fitzwilliam Museum in England\,  the MEAM in Spain\, the Israel Museum and soon the National Portrait Gallery in Washington\, D.C.  \n  \nABOUT JAMES YAROSH: \n\n\nEstablished in 1996\, the James Yarosh Associates Gallery in Holmdel\, New Jersey\, was founded upon and remains loyal to its vision: to represent fine art for art’s sake and to curate gallery collections and thoughtfully present art and interior design specification with an artist’s eye and understanding. Yarosh\, an artist and well- published interior designer\, offers a full-scale gallery and design center where clients can associate with other like-minded individuals located just one hour outside Manhattan. \nAs a designer\, Yarosh travels the world\, studying how the greatest museums display their art and visiting artists’ homes to understand how the artists themselves live with their art. SUMMARY:Alexander Stewart: Void Vision
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Stewart’s Void Vision is an abstract science-fiction short film in which the line between the real and the simulated are blurred and distorted; a space where doubles\, twins\, duplicates\, re-creations\, and copies merge. \nCombining a science-fiction sensibility with the aesthetic of early CGI animation experiments\, Stewart presents rotating arrangements of lasers and duplicated women that fade in and out\, appearing as both photographed scenes and computer-modeled recreations. The audio track\, incorporating text from Philip K. Dick’s 1981 novel Valis\, features an improvised electronic score and a voice articulating theories about the mind and the universe. \nAlexander Stewart: Void Vision is part of the Arts Center’s Ways of Being theme. DESCRIPTION:ONIRICA: MELINDA STICKNEY-GIBSON & GARY GISSLER · \nJuly 15 – August 28\, 2022 \nCastello 925 \nFondamenta San’Isepo 780 \nSestiere Castello\, Venice IT \nOPENING RECEPTION: Friday\, 15 July\, 19:00 – 21:00 | 7-9pm. \nVenice\, Italy: Castello 925 presents Onirica\, a two-person exhibition of paintings and drawings by Melinda Stickney-Gibson and small works by Gary Gissler opening 15 July and running through 28 Aug\, 2022. \nOnirica\, an adjective that translates as “dream-like” in English\, is the uniting concept of the work of these two New York-based artists.  Melinda Stickney-Gibson artworks are sensitive meditations on the texture of memory as her lines and forms alternate between awareness and an oneiric state through flickering shadows of consciousness. As a visual poet\, Ms. Stickney-Gibson incorporates written words as suggestive notations\, while her lines and forms echo the trembling edges of nature. Gary Gissler’s microscopic/obsessive drawings on prepared panelsweave words in a meditative repetitive cycle that creates an undulating\, fragile pattern from seemingly asemic writing. This preoccupation with words as symbols representing meaning as well as the actual words created by the literal marks and forms themselves lends a delicate balance between representation and abstraction.  Like dreams\, both artists convey the poetry of symbol and substance; the dream\, seemingly irrational and random\, nevertheless relays a tale of universal mythic power of which these artists serve as oracles. \n About Melinda Stickney-Gibson \nMelinda Stickney-Gibson has been living and working in New York for over 30 years. She has had over 25 one-person exhibitions\, and has participated in numerous group shows throughout the country. Her work has been reviewed in ARTnews\, ARTS Magazine\, REVIEW Magazine\, Neoteric Art\, ARTNET\, and others. Ms. Stickney-Gibson’s work can be found in many public collections including the Neuberger Museum of Art\, The Dorsky Museum\, San Francisco Opera Plaza\, Tribeca Bridge Tower\, Triptych Films\, Los Angeles and other corporate and private collections. Melinda Stickney-Gibson has been a recipient of two Pollack Krasner Grants. \n About Gary Gissler \nGary Gissler is an American artist working in New York City and in the Catskills. DESCRIPTION:MEDITATIVE ART EXPERIENCE\nEvent Date: August 6\, 2022\nEvent Time: 12pm – 1pm \nAdmission is Free\, but seating is limited. Must register here to participate. \nStrata Gallery presents a meditative artmaking opportunity on Saturday\, August 6 from 12-1pm. A body-scan meditation will be led by two artists and students within the exhibition space. \nRaimy Engel (she/her) and Tess Bourbeau (they/them) are both attending the graduate art therapy program at Southwestern College and New Earth Institute. They are passionate about the role art can take in developing self-attunement\, empathy\, and mental health care. \nThe intention of this body-scan and art experiential is to allow for the exploration of the body outside of physical categories. Self-image may not always be related to looks/body shape and may include knowledge of bodily history and boundaries. “The goal is to promote exploration of the unseen relationship we have with our bodies\,” the two facilitators state. \nAttendees will be guided through a body-scan meditation that pauses occasionally for responsive artmaking. All supplies will be provided. Tess and Raimy would like to acknowledge that a body-scan can be an intense experience for those with bodily trauma and encourage any interested participants to attune to their nervous system and engage with this meditation in a way that feels safe. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday. SUMMARY:Kaatsbaan Outdoor Sculpture Park
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 6\, 2022\, 4-6pm\, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park will host a public reception and artist walk to celebrate the 2022 outdoor sculpture exhibition. This is the second year that contemporary sculpture has been installed at Kaatsbaan for the Summer Festival season. Curated by Hilary Greene\, the artworks complement the ongoing dance\, music\, poetry\, and culinary arts summer programming. This year’s participating artists are: Emil Alzamora\, Stuart Farmery\, Tristan Fitch\, Jared Handelsman\, Kenichi Hiratsuka\, Lowell Miller\, Portia Munson\, Shelley Parriott\, Eileen M. Power\, Gregory Steel\, Christina Tenaglia\, and Millicent Young.\nThe sculpture exhibition originated in 2021 in response to the Pandemic as Kaatsbaan moved its events outdoors so both artists and audience could safely experience Kaatsbaan’s world class dance and music performances. Exhibition curator Hilary Greene envisioned the artworks as multi- dimensional participants that activate and enhance the lush historic grounds.\nFocusing on mid-career sculptors\, Ms. Greene selected artworks that best embodied the spirit and flow of the Hudson Valley’s unique landscape and the joy of rhythm and movement. She photographs in the land to explore these concepts. Roots will explore the body’s relationship to the earth and their tactile and intimate connection. \nMartin stated\, “I’m excited to be an Emerging Artist Member at Strata Gallery and to be a part of the Santa Fe art community. Having previously lived here\, I’ve always admired it. My work is about the relationship between the female body and the land. I’m interested in exploring how we perceive this connection and how the ephemeral nature of both the body and the land plays into the cycles of life\, death\, and rebirth. DESCRIPTION:Opening reception and meet the artist:\nFriday\, August 26\, 5–7pm\nExhibition continues through September 30\, 2022 \nJHB Gallery is delighted to present its second exhibition of work by artist Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio\, Southampton\, Long Island. Following the artist’s 2021 presentation at the same venue\, this year’s exhibition will focus on examples of Means’ iconic Light Bulb works—including new digital lightbulbs—alongside Abstractions produced using the artist’s characteristic innovative darkroom processes. \nFor over forty years\, Amanda Means has created a body of work that has pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium with her celebrated Leaf\, Flower\, Water Glass\, Light Bulb\, and Abstraction series. Means has been a darkroom innovator throughout her career: adapting a 19th century camera for use as an enlarger\, photographing objects without the use of negatives\, working with a large-format Polaroid camera\, and creating a series of remarkable abstracts working only with light and photographic materials. The artist’s darkroom alchemy was cited by the Guggenheim Foundation in awarding Means their prestigious Fellowship in 2017 for her contribution to contemporary photography. \nOur exhibition will include examples from all phases of the artist’s career. Alongside key works from Means’ ongoing series in which the materials and chemistry of the darkroom are masterfully manipulated to create sumptuous Abstractions\, we will also be debuting new works from the artist’s Light Bulb series in archival pigment prints. \nAmanda Means has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad\, and in 2021\, was honored with a career retrospective at University Art Gallery\, University of Massachusetts\, Dartmouth. DESCRIPTION:To wind up the summer\, in August we pick a non-profit to support and have an artful fund raiser along with our exhibits. In considering our town and the beautiful river that runs through Richmond\, we think Friends of the James River Park is the perfect pick. Anything we do to keep the city clean directly affects the health of the James. Friends of the James River Park are citizen stewards of the park and provide ongoing support for conservation\, enhancement\, and recreational enjoyment of the park\, while protecting its natural and historic environments. Now that’s a mission! \n  \nAt our opening reception you will see renderings of the James River that depict the essence of Richmond’s greatest natural resource—in photographs\, paintings\, and sculpture all by Virginia artists. In addition\, the All Media Show will include a variety of subject matter and mediums. Three solo shows open artists: Keenan Cross\, Cathy Cazares\, and Elizabeth Caffery.   \n  \nPlease join us on August 26th\, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Make donations to the Friends of the James River Park through online links\, buy a ticket for the auction of a Bill Draper photograph of the James River\, bid on the silent auction items and for any purchase in the main gallery\, a portion will be donated to this cause. This exhibit emphasizes this evolution of style. \n  \nThe exhibit is in the Centre Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLife in Grunge by Cathy Cazares \n  \n  \n  \nCathy Cazares is a resident artist at Art Works. She combines photography\, sketches\, drawings\, paintings and found objects to create her mixed media artwork. She is fascinated with people and the urban environment. What may look like grunge to many\, she finds beauty therein. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nUnconscious Voyages by Elizabeth Caffery \n  \nElizabeth Caffery’s work reveals a story book assembly of images and often depicts the intermingling of opposing emotions–wounds versus triumphs\, human tragedies versus successes. Sometimes a happy\, optimistic piece will emerge. The process is not deliberated but evolves on its own\, changing direction where needed. When two parallel planes of thought like light and dark reach an equilibrium\, an understanding\, Elizabeth express this realization in the artwork. Elizabeth’s personal growth is reflected in her art. Gratitude for Life\, both the good and bad that life offers are her incentives that keep her art moving forward. \nElizabeth received a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on Studio Art in 1986\, from Randolph Macon College. \n  Save

DESCRIPTION:Learn about the August-September featured artists and their artwork at this informal artist talk.\nArtists include: Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, and Carol Meese.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Artist books have been the main focus of McCarney’s art practice since 1980. He feels the book is the perfect form to combine his academic background in photography and design with his love for the “corporeality of craft and philosophic possibilities of sculpture.” He states\, “The interpretive space of the book and the interaction of a reader engage my interest in communication as process and form.”\n\nMcCarney’s decision to make artists books is for both practical and formal reasons: they are easy to transport\, access\, and share; their history is socially and culturally saturated; and everyone has some relationship with a book. According to McCarney\, “a book’s materiality and proximity to the reader offer a unique experience for expressing ideas quietly and with purpose.”\n\nMargaret Buchanan’s oil paintings will be displayed in her exhibition\, The Quiet. For Buchanan\, painting is “a place of agitation and excitement mixed with utter calm and joy.” Buchanan responds to composition\, light\, color\, space\, and texture\, and how those elements orchestrate our everyday moments. Her paintings suggest the presence of figures that do not appear in the composition\, referenced by a space where “someone is about to enter or has just left\, the liminal spaces between people\, the aftermath of human activity.” The Quiet articulates a dynamic space\, one that negotiates many states of being to create a sense of place.\n\nA book artist\, painter\, and designer\, Margaret Buchanan divides her working life between painting and her graphic design business\, Buchanan Design. She studied graphic design and painting at Virginia Commonwealth University\, in Richmond\, Virginia\, where she earned a BFA with honors.\n\nThe mystery of unspoken words\, unconscious thoughts\, and unheard prayers emerge in Carol Meese’s exhibition of paintings\, Prayer Books. Meese’s previous career in psychology provides her with an “understanding of what motivates others\,” how to relate on an emotional level\, and of the importance of the subconscious and unconscious helping (her) to communicate on a subliminal level. Saying things that have no words.”\n\nDuring our pandemic time was spent reading and thinking about solitude. Buried in these paintings are words from Theodore Rilke’s poem “Solitude.” and personal prayers. A pentimento effect is created with paint\, plaster\, ink and graphite. Thoughts about solitude are inscribed then obscured as if by smoke or fog or ignored thoughts or speech.
