SUMMARY:Exhibition Tour: Seeing in Art and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:This event requires registration; see further details below. \nJoin curators Jen Thum and Laura Muir for a tour of the exhibition Seeing in Art and Medicine\, on view from September 2 to December 30\, 2023. Thum and Muir will share insights about the museums’ medical humanities program for radiologists—on which the exhibition is based—the curatorial process\, and what can be gleaned through close looking. \nSeeing in Art and Medicine invites visitors to consider the medical program’s themes of narrative\, objectivity\, embodiment\, empathy\, power\, ambiguity\, and care through works from across the collections. Explore big human questions and try your hand at close-looking activities in an interactive setting.Tours are limited to 18 people and registration is required. You can register by clicking on the event on this form\, beginning at 10am the day of the talk. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Marykate O'Neil: like\, comment\, share - opening reception
DESCRIPTION:In the past few years\, for many of us\, the majority of our daily interactions occur through a screen. We work at a day job\, staring all day at a screen. Then\, we turn to a different screen at night\, to stream more ‘content’.  The phone.  The laptop\, The iPad.  The ‘zoom’ calls.  Emails. Texts. Tweets. The streaming service. The FB ‘friends’.  The Instagram ‘followers’. The TikTok. The computer screen.  The computer screen. It feels a bit like the Jetsons meets the ‘Boy in the Plastic Bubble’.  My work in this exhibition is based upon a selection of images I saw through my screen.\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Film Screening and Conversation: Artist Dario Robleto with Jennifer Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of artist Dario Robleto’s film The Aorta of an Archivist\, followed by a conversation between Robleto and art historian Jennifer Roberts\, in conjunction with the exhibition Seeing in Art and Medicine\, on view from September 2 to December 30\, 2023. \nAbout the film:\nThe Aorta of an Archivist\, 2021 (English; 53 min.) \nWritten\, researched\, and directed by Dario Robleto and commissioned by the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence\, Kansas\, The Aorta of an Archivist is an immersive sound and video installation that connects the artist’s deep and longstanding research on the cosmos\, the human heart\, and the history and philosophical implications of sound recording. The work is framed by the concept of the “unobservable universe\,” an astronomical phenomenon with profound consequences: because the universe is expanding so quickly\, light from the stars rapidly moving away from Earth will no longer be captured by even our strongest telescopes. The cosmos has presented us with an observational threshold that seems impermeable. \nThe film draws from Robleto’s print series The First Time\, The Heart (A Portrait of Life 1854–1913)\, selections from which are on view in Seeing in Art and Medicine. \nSpeakers:\nDario Robleto\, Artist\nJennifer Roberts\, Drew Gilpin Faust Professor of the Humanities\, American and Contemporary Art\, and Director of Undergraduate Studies\, Department of History of Art and Architecture\, Harvard University \nBefore the screening\, guests are invited to visit the exhibition on Level 3. \nFree admission\, but seating is limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nThe screening and conversation will take place in Menschel Hall\, Lower Level. Doors will open at 5:30pm\, at the Broadway entrance. \nLimited complimentary parking is available in the Broadway Garage\, 7 Felton Street\, Cambridge. \n  Save
