DESCRIPTION:Art writer Seph Rodney will moderate a discussion with artist Andrew Lyght and exhibition curator Osi Audu about the exhibition “Touch Wood” at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts on Sunday June 8th\, at 2:00 PM. \nAbout Seph Rodney: Seph Rodney\, PhD is a regular contributor to The New York Times\, and a former senior critic and opinions editor for Hyperallergic. He has also written on art for CNN\, NBC\, Art in America\, Art Forum\, The Guardian\, and several other publications. In 2020 he won the Rabkin Arts Journalism prize and in 2022 won the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. He is also a curator of contemporary art exhibitions\, including co-curating Get in the Game\, the largest show that the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has undertaken\, which opened October 2024 and will travel to other venues. \nAbout Andrew Lyght: Andrew Lyght’s works combine drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, and installation art. Through matching industrial elements with vibrant colors and smooth geometric shapes\, Lyght transforms hard-edge\, functional construction objects into artworks that are graceful and lyrical. \nAbout Osi Audu: The work of Nigerian-American artist Osi Audu focuses on the dualism of form and void\, the tangible and intangible. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 12 at 5 p.m.\, Elizabeth Cronin\, author of Heimat Photography in Austria (2015)\, explores Trude Fleischmann in relation to this aspect of 1930s visual culture. “In Austria\, what is generally referred to as Heimat (home or homeland) photography featured local sights: peasants\, churchgoers\, skiers and rural alpine landscapes. As these traditional\, romanticized images came to be identified with the idea of a nation\, they were used by the Standestaat of 1930s Austria to promote a national identity that grew into fascism.” \nAbout the Exhibition: Austrian-born Trude Fleischmann (1895-1990) was one of the most accomplished female photographers of the 20th century. After great success in Vienna in the 20s photographing artists\, models\, and performers\, she fled the Anschluss in 1938\, first to Paris and then New York. She opened a studio on Fifth Avenue in 1940 and photographed many of the artists and intellectuals of the day\, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Albert Einstein. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: A Universal Vision—Creative Synthesis of European Prints and Indian Paintings at the Mughal Court
DESCRIPTION:European prints became a key source of inspiration for artists at the courts of Akbar (r. 1556–1605) and Jahangir (r. 1605–27) in northern India. Mughal painters adopted this foreign vocabulary but made it their own by incorporating local style and techniques and by adding iconographic elements that would be meaningful to a pluralistic audience. The result of this innovative synthesis is not merely a Europeanized mode of painting but a vision linked to Akbar’s religious universalism and the global connections of the Mughal court. Curatorial fellow Janet O’Brien will guide visitors through a new installation in Gallery 2400 that features Mughal paintings and drawings that capture this new visual idiom. \n  Save

DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Kiki Smith’s use of symbology\, which often incorporates animals\, plants\, and mythic imagery to explore themes of the body\, nature\, and transformation\, create a metal relief sculpture using tin and embossing tools. Through the integration of ancient symbols\, engage in a creative process that connects contemporary art practices with timeless visual language. \nCreativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of material exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being\, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms\, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. Now residing in central Virginia with an ever-growing menagerie of rescue cats\, Rachel’s artist statement reflects her unique approach to art. She believes that making art does not have to express personal thoughts or feelings; instead\, it serves as a meditation on life and the unending decisions we make subconsciously. For Rachel\, art becomes a portal into the mysteries that surround us\, offering a wonderful gift and an absolute surprise with each creation. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery at Art Works through August 16\, 2025. \nIt’s All Ahead of Us by Rebecca Visger \nRebecca Visger’s exhibit showcases impasto and impressionistic acrylic paintings of road scenes and views from behind the wheel. This series explores the road as a metaphor for the infinite potential and possibilities ahead. The paintings reflect the excitement and fear of new experiences\, symbolizing both independence and the isolation of choosing one’s own path. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery at Art Works through August 16\, 2025. \n  \nJuly 2025 All Media Show\n  \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. There is no theme this month. Call for entries is June 15 – July 13\, 2025\, and may be submitted through the online form. The juror will be Naomi Chung–an award-winning painter with an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University\, represented by the Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia for over 20 years\, and affiliated with the Art Registry Group in Washington\, DC. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery at Art Works through August 14\, 2025. Check our website for details on submitting artwork:  Call for Entries \nThe Bridge Project – Blake Bottoms \n  \nRVA Thriving Artists introduces Blake Bottoms in the most current Community Bridge Project.   Blake Bottoms explores identity\, self-discovery\, and transformation through watercolor\, using botanical symbolism to reflect human experience. Pieces like Nexus\, Entwined\, and Jesus Hands examine intersectionality\, intimacy\, and non-binary identity\, while Metamorphoses and Dionysus celebrate transformation and fluid self-expression.  Through these works\, the artist fosters dialogue on authenticity and introspection. \nThis exhibit is in the upstairs Bridge Project space at Art Works and will continue through August 30\, 2025. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Materials Lab Workshop: Inspired by Nature—Imaginative Drawing\, with Erica Beade
DESCRIPTION:Looking closely at nature inspires a huge range of imaginative artwork\, from abstraction and decorative work to illustration and cartooning. In this workshop\, we’ll first examine a wide variety of drawings before exploring techniques for unleashing our imagination to create our own. Class size will be limited to 15 to allow time for individual feedback. A handout with techniques and exercises will be provided. All skill levels are welcome. \nArtist and educator Erica Beade worked as a scientific illustrator for many years\, combining her love of science\, nature\, and drawing. Her traditional and digital illustrations have appeared in numerous books\, exhibitions\, and journals. Since 2002\, she has taught observational drawing at the Harvard Museum of Natural History and many other venues\, with a focus on nature. As a teacher\, Beade is excited about the potential of the drawing process to open up new worlds that are right in front of us. \n  Save
