DESCRIPTION:David Nolan Gallery is delighted to announce Wardell Milan’s Death\, Wine\, Revolt: Uneventful Days\, a pop-up exhibition at 2766 La Cienega Blvd.\, on view February 9 – 22\, 2020.  \nFor his third solo exhibition with David Nolan Gallery\, and the first in Los Angeles\, Wardell Milan introduces a new body of work that explores the daily lives of white nationalists. In depicting their morning rituals\, social gatherings and in their most intimate moments\, Milan reveals the banality of hate. In addition to the work presented in the gallery Milan will mount a series of Klansmen portraits on billboards and bus stop shelters around Los Angeles\, the place of movie and advertising imagery.  Milan invites the passerby to consider their coexistence with these startling and haunting visuals. SUMMARY:Lisson Gallery in East Hampton Village
DESCRIPTION:Lisson Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition space at 55 Main Street in East Hampton Village. For its inauguration this summer\, the 1\,000 square foot space will highlight one work per week by gallery artists – with upcoming presentations by Carmen Herrera\, Anish Kapoor\, Joanna Pousette-Dart\, Sean Scully and Leon Polk Smith\, among others – featuring both seminal\, historic artworks and premiering new bodies of work. \nThe first presentation will feature a painting by Stanley Whitney\, made in 1996. The rare work is landscape format\, measuring over seven feet wide. The mid-1990s mark a particularly significant time in the artist’s career\, where\, dissatisfied and unable to find a place in the New York art world for his work\, Whitney moved to Italy. The influence of the country’s art and architecture soon became visible in the increasingly structural compositions of his abstractions. The work on view in East Hampton is a superb example of the pivotal moment where the internal structure and color palette transform to his now signature style. Untitled (1996) will simultaneously be presented as an online exhibition on the gallery’s website. The exhibition is accompanied by a new essay written for the occasion by Cathleen Chaffee\, the Chief Curator of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo\, New York. SUMMARY:Look Again: A Survey of Contemporary Painting
DESCRIPTION:Hollis Taggart is pleased to announce the opening of Hollis Taggart Southport\, a temporary gallery location in the heart of downtown Southport\, Connecticut. The space will open on August 15 in the historically landmarked building at 330 Pequot Avenue\, with the exhibition Look Again: A Survey of Contemporary Painting.  \nFeaturing more than a dozen artists\, the show explores the spectrum of approaches\, techniques\, and materials within contemporary painting practice and emphasizes in particular the erosion of traditional boundaries between artistic genres\, styles\, and modes. Look Again includes gallery artists William Buchina\, Leah Guadagnoli\, André Hemer\, Kenichi Hoshine\, Dana James\, John Knuth\, and Bill Scott\, as well as Elizabeth Cooper\, Bethany Czarnecki\, Hiroya Kurata\, Suchitra Mattai\, Matt Phillips\, and Devin Troy Strother. The gallery currently plans to maintain its Southport location until September 10\, 2020.  \n“With our New York City locations still operating by appointment only\, we wanted to give our artists\, both those who are formally part of our program and those with whom we have long-standing relationships\, another opportunity to show their work and connect with new audiences. The opening of our temporary location in Southport allows us to expand those networks of support and also to more actively engage with an audience and collector base that we have been building relationships with and cultivating for some time now\,” said Hollis Taggart. “We are very excited to have visitors come through our doors in Southport\, and are enthusiastic about the show that Paul Efstathiou\, our Director of Contemporary Art\, has put together.”  \nThe artists featured in Look Again are inspired by a wide range of subjects and ideas. Kenichi Hoshine and Hiroya Kurata both draw on the moments\, scenes\, and images of their everyday lives. In Hoshine’s work\, these elements become jumping-off points for wider imagined narratives\, and in his recent abstract compositions he has been particularly drawn to theatrical sets and props. For Kurata\, however\, the past serves as a greater source of interest and a sense of nostalgia pervades his paintings\, which combine both abstract and figurative elements. In his work\, remembrances of childhood places and events are remade on the canvas—now filtered and presented through the lens of time. Memory is also an important aspect in Dana James’s work. In her abstract paintings\, suburban landscapes and the images of Americana are translated into fluid forms\, gestural lines\, and fields of color—the original sources fading in and out of recognition much like a distant memory one can’t quite grasp. This visual sensation is enhanced by James’s mixture of desaturated oils and wax\, which she applies to raw canvas.   \nSeveral artists in the exhibition use their personal history to examine broader themes of identity\, history\, and the contemporary social and political landscape. Suchitra Mattai—whose work embraces a wide range of media—draws on her family history as well as stories of indentured female laborers and slaves to question mainstream narratives of colonialism and uncover hidden and forgotten figures and events. Devin Troy Strother’s practice\, which engages with the formal vocabularies of painting\, collage\, assemblage\, and sculpture\, likewise plays on and critiques issues related to race and the art historical canon. The madcap nature of many of Strother’s paintings and sculptures also connects with the work of William Buchina\, who in his most recent paintings has explored the nature of figures gathered together\, whether for religious ceremonies\, political rallies\, marshal interventions\, or other communal happenings. Recontextualized and remixed into Surrealist-style landscapes\, the figures offer a look into human behavior and the tribalistic ways in which people seek to meet their various and divergent needs\, aspirations\, and beliefs.  \nEngagement with the human body and one’s physical environment is another connective theme within Look Again. Bethany Czarnecki’s vibrant and sumptuous abstractions explore in particular the female form and its wider relationships to both physical and psychic space. The emotionality of Czarneck’s work is also evident in Bill Scott’s paintings\, which are often inspired by nature\, notions of escape and paradise\, and our response to music and poetry. His works offer a space of meditation and repose. Leah Guadagnoli’s whimsical sculptural paintings\, on the other hand\, reference an eclectic array of architectural and design modes\, from the curves and lines of Swahili architecture to the bold patterns and colors of The Memphis Group\, and to most recently her garden and the landscapes of upstate New York\, where she has been quarantining. These environments serve as touchstones in Guadagnoli’s works\, which embrace both the formal qualities of painting and sculpture to create new\, compelling effects. Architectural forms also compel Matt Phillips’s softly colored abstract compositions\, which he develops organically on the canvas with self-made water-based pigments. Maps and quilts also offer points of departure in his work.  	 \nSeveral of the featured artists utilize unique techniques and processes to expand the boundaries of and the formal dialogues around abstraction. John Knuth is particularly recognized for his use of fly regurgitations to produce brilliant\, seemingly luminescent\, abstract paintings and globes. Honing this approach over many years\, the artist challenges traditional notions of art making. In a distinctly different vein\, André Hemer explores the confluence of digital and analog techniques within contemporary painting. Through a singular process that includes both digital scanning and a physical working of acrylic paint and pigment\, Hemer creates tactile and colorful abstract works that capture the erosion between our in-person and digital experiences. Elizabeth Cooper’s paintings draw on the language of Abstract Expressionism\, as she pours\, splashes\, and splatters paint atop swaths of flat monochromatic color fields. Although referential to the past\, Cooper’s keen eye for color contrasts and use of neons and pastels make her canvases appear more like contemporary advertisements\, extending the trajectory of the movement into the present.  \nAbout Hollis Taggart\nFounded in 1979\, Hollis Taggart presents significant works of American art\, showcasing the trajectory of American art movements from the Hudson River School to American Modernism and the Post-War and Contemporary eras. Its program is characterized by a deep commitment to scholarship and bringing to the fore the work of under-recognized artists. The gallery has sponsored several catalogue raisonné projects\, most recently for the American Surrealist artist Kay Sage\, and has been instrumental in advancing knowledge of such compelling artists as Alfred Maurer\, Arthur B. Carles\, and more recently\, Theodoros Stamos\, Marjorie Strider and Michael (Corinne) West. In the summer of 2019\, the gallery announced the formal expansion of its primary market business and focus on the presentation of contemporary work\, operating under Hollis Taggart Contemporary. We are also ecstatic to announce that CAMP is also part of the art in the Sagamore Bungalows project where we are proud to present the latest collaboration of artists Aurora Molina and Edison Peñafiel with their piece: El Raft De Madeinusa (pictured above)\, an installation which presents a moment from a journey across the ocean — a scene that appears as an echo of Géricault’s Raft of the Medusa. \nEl Raft de Madeinusa captures the struggle of migrants facing the dangers of the open sea to find new land\, made in collaboration between fiber artist Molina and multimedia installation artist Peñafiel. DESCRIPTION:REPOPULATIONS: New Horizons is the second iteration of the Climate Week-inspired exhibition series REPOPULATIONS which focuses on environmentally-themed subjects and takes place yearly during the summer and early fall months. Curated by Daniela Holban\, this exhibition is part of the larger NOoSPHERE Arts’ WE ARE NATURE Series: art events that make full use of the unique stage setting of the Kingsland Wildflowers bird sanctuary at Broadway Stages in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn\, to engage a diverse audience in environmental efforts through art. \nREPOPULATIONS: New Horizons brings together a group of contemporary artists to reflect and discuss environmentally-focused themes\, the state of the world today\, and new conceptions of the future. The exhibition will focus on female-identifying and non-binary artists\, in an attempt to construct visions of the power of creation + destruction and metaphorically reclaim sacred spaces for the priestess archetype. Malcomson will be presenting his Signs Series and his Puerto Rico watercolors.Virginia Bradley (www.virginiabradley.com) is an abstract painter whose work is based in alchemy and the transformation of materials. Her latest series Corallium was inspired by the rejuvenation of the coral reefs in the Playa Santa Bay in southwest Puerto Rico where Virginia has a winter studio. As recently as 15 years ago\, the reefs were almost completely decimated due to pollution and boat traffic. In 2011\, the Obama administration undertook an extensive federal project to bring back the coral reefs. Today they are thriving! \nCoral reefs are some of the most diverse and essential ecosystems on Earth. Besides supporting more species per unit area than any other marine environment\, they also form a barrier that protects coastal land and communities. \nSwimming and snorkeling among the beautiful coral reefs have embedded the images of the underwater world in Virginia’s visual vocabulary. Those images re-emerge in her painting process.  \nExperimentation with oil paint\, sea water\, alcohol and other painting mediums in the 95-degree sun create a watery environment in which the paintings form. Heat from the sun acts as a catalyst in coalescing the materials into new images. Physical intervention – like pouring layers of paint onto the canvas\, sanding\, drawing\, adding to & subtracting from the painting surface – is key to the creation of the Corallium Series. Transparent film\, canvas and wood panels serve as the foundation of these works. And built on them\, materials and interactions mirror nature’s own inventive process. All of life has been formed – and transformed – by the water\, elements and powerful forces of the sea. This perpetual churning materials both creates the infinite variety of life on earth – and sustains it. \nChris Malcomson (www.chrismalcomson.com) is an established British painter who is based in the US. He has exhibited his work internationally and is included in many public and private collections. Malcolmson is strongly influenced by Jungian and Transpersonal psychology\, the poet Rumi\, and icons\, which are reflected in his artistic studies of inner landscapes. Each of his paintings showcases spatial balance and harmony\, as well as layered colors and pure geometric forms that immerse the viewer in a rich visual realm. Chris ultimately seeks to remind us of the mythological resonance present in our daily lives\, and of the psychological and cultural depth that lies beyond what we typically perceive. \nChris’s painting now takes on three forms: “I always carry a small notebook\, which I use to catch the Muse. It is a place to jot poems\, ideas and drawings to which I might add watercolors.\nThe second are small more formal watercolors\, these are pleasing to do in Puerto Rico as they dry so quickly. Lastly are larger abstracts on canvas which go up to about five-foot square.\nFor many of these I have used a fixed form\, which allows concentration on colour. Currently I am developing the Signs Series – paintings which consider the resonance of symbols which immerses the viewer in rich visual worlds”.  \n  Save

The exhibition is supported by a Silver Sun Foundation residency. \nHoming Instinct evokes a world of shifting layers\, juxtaposing neorealism with the vast metaphysical sweep of nature. The audience is invited into a poetic and powerful aesthetic experience to imagine an interconnectedness as a species of nature in our changing world. \nThe story is set in the near future in a desperate moment of rising sea level. Two friends face a federal executive order to evacuate New York City and relocate within 30 days. The metaphorical question arises\, “Are you a fish or a bird?” Raven\, a psychologist studying the roots of extremism\, and Paloma\, a marine biologist at the Coney Island Aquarium\, encounter a time traveler in different ways. Existential questions around government authority and the individual are explored using the language of dance to reimagine our relationship with nature.The starring roles are played by Barrett Doss (Station 19\, Grey’s Anatomy) and Kineta Kunutu (The Blacklist\, Citadel)\, alongside a cast of accomplished talent. A steel sculpture\, “Queen Coils\,” by the artist’s brother\, sculptor/welder Jay Bradley Pilcher\, is featured in Homing Instinct\, as a thematic symbol of the creative spirit of human change and nature. “Queen Coils” will be on display in the exhibition. \n  Save

The gallery will be hosting an opening reception on April 11\, 2025\, in our North Miami gallery 6–9 PM. \nJulie Peppito Chooses Hope offers a roadmap for navigating chaos through layered compositions of fiber\, paint\, and found objects. Exploring the tension between expectation and reality\, Peppito transforms everyday materials into intricate works that embrace movement\, ambiguity\, and growth. The exhibition invites viewers to step beyond uncertainty and into possibility—where hope is both a choice and an ever-expanding horizon. \n  \nABOUT OUR EXHIBITING ARTIST: JULIE PEPPITO (b. 1970\, American)\nJulie Peppito combines multiple materials to create creature-like sculptures\, layered tapestries\, large installations\, collages\, and playground art. The hybrid forms are about connection\, waste and fantasy.Peppito holds an MFA with a concentration in sculpture from Alfred University in Alfred\, NY (2004) and she received her BFA from The Cooper Union in New York\, NY (1992). Peppito’s work has been the subject of 10 solo exhibitions.
