SUMMARY:Highlight: The High Line Nine
DESCRIPTION:Hollis Taggart to Open Exhibition Exploring Contemporary Abstract Painting\, \nFeaturing the Work of Ted Gahl\, Clare Grill\, Margaux Ogden\, Gary Petersen\, \nAnd Matt Phillips \nCurated by Independent Curator Paul Efstathiou\, \nHighlight: The High Line on View May 9 – May 31\, 2019 \nOpening Reception May 9\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM \n  \nOn May 9\, Hollis Taggart will open an exhibition of recent works by five contemporary abstract \npainters\, including Ted Gahl\, Clare Grill\, Margaux Ogden\, Gary Petersen\, and Matt Phillips. Titled \nHighlight: The High Line\, the exhibition features focused explorations of each artist’s practice. While \neach artist is distinct in their vision and approach\, subtle thematic through-lines do emerge as one \nexplores the works in dialogue with each other\, including interests in the relationships between \nfiguration and abstraction and the significance of repetition and erasure within contemporary abstract \npractice. Curated by Paul Efstathiou\, an independent curator and art dealer with whom the gallery has \ncollaborated on several previous Highlight exhibitions\, Highlight: The High Line will be on view \nthrough May 31 at Hollis Taggart’s Project Space at 507 W. 27th Street. \n  \n“We are delighted to be partnering with Paul once again on a Highlight presentation\, which as a series \nfocuses on exploring the work of and developing new audiences for a wide range of artists\, especially \ncontemporary painters. The range of creative vision and technique across the featured artists is \nparticularly exciting\, and captures well the ongoing relevance of painting within contemporary \npractice\,” said Hollis Taggart. “This exhibition also provides a dynamic counterpoint to the solo \npresentation in our primary Chelsea space on the work of Knox Martin\, who at age 96 is still \nproducing new paintings that build on dialogues from across his nearly seven-decade career.” \n  \nFurther information about each featured artist as well as curator Paul Efstathiou follows below. \n  \nTed Gahl has said\, “Paintings to me are the biography of a painter\, just not in the form of a resume. It \nis a clear and tangible indication of what they were doing and seeing\, suspended in time. You’re \nlooking at a performance that you weren’t there to witness yourself.” Many of Gahl’s abstract works \nare influenced by his memories and experiences—ruminations on scenes that he has been painting and \nre-painting since childhood. Defying any easy categorization\, Gahl melds elements of figuration with \nbold\, emotive\, and even at times aggressive free-form gestures. The cohesion of these modes is \nfurther amplified in some of his large-scale canvases in which Gahl incorporates found objects\, \nadding another physical and conceptual dimension to the work. Interested in the monochrome and the \nunderpinnings of the Minimalist movement\, Gahl often plays with depth and perspective\, creating \nworks that at a distance appear flat and still but that on closer inspection reveal inflections of \nmovement and subtle forms and colors. \n  \nClare Grill takes inspiration from intricate\, handmade materials like antique lace\, quilts\, and \nembroidery. These items become the touchstones for her richly-layered abstract compositions. As she \nbegins her paintings\, she allows the canvas\, materials\, and her environment to guide her hand\, \nconsidering the ways that light illuminates imperfections in the surface\, the direction of dried strokes\, \nand the subtle shadows and lines that appear as the composition develops. Through this process\, Grill \noften paints\, scrapes away\, and repaints areas of the canvas\, sometimes many times\, until the final \nwork emerges. In this way\, much like the antique pieces that inspire her\, Grill’s paintings have a life \nand history that exists within the surface. Of this\, Grill says\, “[My paintings] are about secrets; things \nrevealed\, and things buried deep; things fading away; and the subtle\, the slip\, and the in-between.” \n  \nFascinated by the slippage between accidental and planned mark-making\, Margaux Ogden’s abstract \npaintings appear as a tangle of lines\, forms\, and color fields. Her fluid free-form gestures meld with \nmore precise geometric shapes to create a new visual vocabulary that feels at once foreign and \nfamiliar. This sensation is further accentuated by Ogden’s use of color. Inspired by the Minimalist \nembrace of the monochrome\, many of Ogden’s paintings appear as studies into a single color\, \nproduced in various degrees of saturation and dilution across her raw\, unprimed canvas. Drawn in \nparticular to pastel yellows\, pinks\, greens\, the joyful nature of these colors bely the layered and \nintense nature of the creation of the painting itself. Of her work\, Ogden has said\, “One could trace the \ncompositions back to some modernist moment when geometry began to skid. …the spatial and \nperspective shifts create a freefall effect\, dissolving any system beyond which is contained in the \nframe.” \n  \nGary Petersen’s paintings are characterized by an exuberant use of color and hard-edged lines and \ngeometric forms. Seemingly precariously stacked\, these vibrant shapes appear to move subtly within \nthe framework of canvas—prone to topple over at any moment. This spatial interplay and tension are \nin part what makes Petersen’s compositions so visually compelling\, and is achieved through the \nartist’s intuitive approach. To create his works\, Petersen first paints irregular lines and grids\, which he \nthen obscures with a transparent white wash\, creating a barely visible substructure. From here\, he \ndevelops the composition organically\, with one line and shape leading freely to the next\, connected by \nthe composition’s bright\, frequently neon\, colors. Petersen says of his work\, “…there is a range of \nreferences\, from architecture\, cartoons\, advertisements and graphic design… my geometric \nabstraction[s] address…our current predicaments: uncertainty\, imbalance\, and insecurity\, with a bit of \nhumor thrown in.” \n  \nFor his softly-colored abstract compositions\, Matt Phillips draws inspiration from a range of sources\, \nincluding maps\, quilts\, and architectural forms. Phillips’s compositions develop slowly and \norganically as he moves across the canvas\, adjusting and revisiting the colors and the lines until the \nconstellation of the work tightens into a distinct set of spatial relationships. Phillips’s methodical \napproach is captured and accentuated within the work by his use of self-made water-based paint. The \nliquidity of the paint at once allows Phillips to emphasize certain lines and angles\, while also melding \nthe paint with the canvas itself\, producing a single inextricable whole. This is in part what gives his \npaintings a sense of softness. Of his process and inspiration Phillips\, says “I often begin my paintings \nusing similar structures. They share the same bones. But as I work\, they begin to evoke a form or a \nlight or a space. I like that pivot\, when the painting starts to regard something outside itself.” \n  \n— \nAbout Paul Efstathiou \nPaul Efstathiou has worked for nearly 17 years as an art dealer and independent curator. From 2004 \nthrough 2016\, he ran PTE Fine Arts\, an arts consultancy and showroom\, in partnership with his \nbrother\, Eric Efstathiou. In 2016\, he established the exhibition series Highlight Curated\, as a means of \nbringing new attention to and advancing the careers of contemporary artists with whom he’s \ndeveloped deeply-rooted and long-lasting relationships. Efstathiou has produced five Highlight \nCurated exhibitions to-date\, including three with Hollis Taggart\, and featured the work of more than \n20 artists\, including William Buchina\, Ted Gahl\, Brenda Goodman\, John Knuth\, Matt Mignanelli\, \nEsther Ruiz\, and Devin Troy Strother. Efstathiou also previously collaborated with Hollis Taggart on \nexhibitions of works by Michael Michaeledes (2012) and Theodoros Stamos (2008 and 2010). \nEfstathiou is dedicated to nurturing the careers of emerging and under-recognized artists\, leveraging \nhis relationships in both the for and nonprofit sectors to develop their collector and audience bases. \n  \nAbout Hollis Taggart \nFounded in 1979\, Hollis Taggart—formerly known as Hollis Taggart Galleries—presents significant \nworks of American art\, showcasing the trajectory of American art movements from the Hudson River \nSchool to American Modernism and Post-War and Contemporary eras. Its program is characterized \nby a deep commitment to scholarship and bringing to the fore the work of under-recognized artists. \nThe gallery has sponsored several catalogue raisonné projects\, most recently for Surrealist artist Kay \nSage\, and has been instrumental in advancing knowledge of such compelling artists as Alfred Maurer\, \nArthur B. Carles\, and more recently\, Theodoros Stamos\, Marjorie Strider and Michael (Corinne)West. \nIn summer 2015\, the gallery moved its primary location from the Upper East Side to Chelsea. In fall \n2018\, it opened a newly renovated street-level location on W. 26th Street\, a private viewing and \nstorage annex across the street\, and a project space at the High Line. With 40 years of experience\, \nHollis Taggart is widely recognized by collectors and curators for its leadership\, expertise\, and \nopenness\, on matters of art history\, and market trends and opportunities. \n  \n### \n  \nFor more information\, please contact: \nAlina Sumajin / Sascha Freudenheim \nPAVE Communications & Consulting \nalina@paveconsult.com / sascha@paveconsult.com \n646-369-2050 / 917-544-6057 \n  Save

SUMMARY:Closing Event for Naama Tsabar: Dedicated
DESCRIPTION:Melodies of Certain Damage (OPUS 4) \nTsabar and a group of female musicians will explore a new vocabulary of movement and sound\, culminating in a performance with Tsabar and her collaborators on the exhibition’s closing night\, May 4\, between 4-6pm. This will be her first performance in New York City since 2017. \nWith the works installed in the gallery\, each Melody is plugged into one of the Transition canvases\, works that Tsabar has repurposed the internal and external components of the amplifier—wires\, speaker\, circuit board—to create a new formal visual experience whilst retaining the object’s ability to broadcast sound. Tsabar then invites a group of female musicians to collaboratively compose a unique composition on the sculptures. Activating the Melodies requires the performers to insert their bodies\, either sitting or lying\, into the spaces between the fragments. By dispersing the centralized phallic order of the objects and the position of the body in relation\, Tsabar and the performers assume the reclining physical position as an act of sensual\, creative and non-hierarchical power. \nThe collaborators performing are: \nRose Blanshei\nRosana Caban\nTaja Cheek\nFrederique Gnaman\nSarah Strauss\nNaama Tsabar \nPerformances will be held at 4pm and 5pm. RSVP is essential. To secure space\, please email events@kasmingallery.com \n  Save

SUMMARY:Public Talk with Ian Berry and members of K.O.S.
DESCRIPTION:Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce Tim Rollins and K.O.S.: Workshop. The exhibition marks the first solo survey show for the art collective since Rollins’ passing in December 2017\, presented with the late artist’s estate. Curated by Ian Berry\, who organized the group’s first major traveling retrospective and monograph\, Tim Rollins and K.O.S.: A History\, in 2009 at Skidmore College’s Tang Teaching Museum\, Tim Rollins and K.O.S.: Workshop will feature many of the collective’s most significant series that deal with issues of race\, identity\, history\, and politics\, spanning from 1987 to 2016. Continuing the legacy of the group\, the exhibition also marks the launch of Studio K.O.S.\, which will host Saturday workshops at the gallery throughout the exhibition (participants will be coordinated with local schools). As the collective’s second iteration\, Studio K.O.S. will continue arts education and youth mentorship spearheaded by several of the foundational members\, including Angel Abreu\, Jorge Abreu\, Robert Branch\, and Rick Savinon. The gallery will host an opening reception with many of the group members in attendance on Thursday\, April 18\, at 536 West 22nd Street\, from 6 to 8 PM\, followed by a public talk on Friday\, May 3\, from 6 to 8 PM\, with Ian Berry and members of K.O.S. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Joan Mitchell: I carry my landscapes around with me
DESCRIPTION:David Zwirner is pleased to present Joan Mitchell: I carry my landscapes around with me\, the first exhibition to focus on the artist’s multipaneled paintings\, on view at the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location in New York. \nOrganized in collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, the works on view—which span four decades of Mitchell’s career—will allow for a unique opportunity to explore the range of scale and formal experimentation of this innovative facet of her oeuvre. One of the few artists of her generation to embrace polyptych compositions\, Mitchell over time refined and expanded her approach to this format\, orchestrating a distinctive balance between continuity and rupture both within and across panels. The horizontally oriented\, panoramic expanse of these paintings is ideally suited to landscape—an important and enduring subject for Mitchell that she linked directly to memory. \nFeaturing paintings from both public and private collections as well as the holdings of the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, this show will be the gallery’s first exhibition of Mitchell’s work since having announced exclusive representation of the Foundation in 2018. On the occasion of the exhibition\, a fully illustrated catalogue is forthcoming from David Zwirner Books\, with new scholarship by art historians Suzanne Hudson and Robert Slifkin. \nFor all press inquiries\, contact\nJulia Lukacher (212) 727-2070\, jlukacher@davidzwirner.com \nImage: Joan Mitchell\, Edrita Fried\, 1981 \n  Save

SUMMARY:William T. Williams: 1970 at Frieze New York 2019
DESCRIPTION:Michael Rosenfeld Gallery presents William T. Williams: 1970 in Booth D10 with an exhibition that focuses on the pivotal year 1970\, highlighting a selection of seminal paintings and never-before-exhibited works on paper from the artist’s first mature series\, Diamond in a Box. William T. Williams (b.1942) exploded onto the New York art scene in 1968 after graduating from Yale University (MFA). Paintings from this time were exhibited in Williams’ groundbreaking first solo exhibition at Reese Palley Gallery in 1971. The exhibition launched a period of great success; reviewed in The New York Times\, paintings in the show were acquired by notable collectors; some of these paintings can now be found in prestigious institutions\, including The Museum of Modern Art\, The Studio Museum in Harlem\, and Yale University Art Gallery. Recently\, while relocating his studio practice from New York City to Connecticut\, Williams discovered approximately eighteen works on paper created during the same period as these monumental paintings. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery will present these works alongside two major paintings. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is the exclusive representative of William T. Williams (b.1942). \nOn Sunday\, May 5\, 2019\, Frieze will present a conversation between William T. Williams and Courtney J. Martin\, Deputy Director and Chief Curator\, Dia Art Foundation. Transcending the Social – 1970 and Today considers the role of abstraction and formalism in an age of social awareness\, and will be held in the MatchesFashion Lounge at 12:30PM. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Norman Lewis: The Last Decade at Frieze New York 2019
DESCRIPTION:Norman Lewis: The Last Decade will be presented in Booth JAM3\, one of seven booths dedicated to the historical significance of the non-profit New York arts organization Just Above Midtown (JAM)\, its founder Linda Goode Bryant\, and the artists she championed. This special section has been curated by Franklin Sirmans\, Director\, Pérez Art Museum Miami as a tribute to the pioneering gallery. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery’s solo presentation of the work of Norman Lewis (1909-1979) will feature paintings and works on paper created during the last decade of the artist’s life\, reflecting two distinctive elements of Lewis’ abstract expressionist practice–calligraphic and atmospheric abstraction. A 1973 painting–one of two exhibited in the inaugural 1974 JAM exhibition Synthesis: A combination of parts or elements into a complex whole–will be on view in the booth\, along with works from the same period that typify Lewis’ signature abstractions and masterful use of color\, line and form. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery proudly represents the Estate of Norman Lewis and this exhibition has been organized with their cooperation. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Morgan O'Hara: TIME STUDIES - LETTERPRESS - SILVERPOINT
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, ANITA ROGERS GALLERY will present an exhibition of work by Morgan O’Hara from three distinct series: TIME STUDIES\, LETTERPRESS EDITIONS and SILVERPOINT. Simultaneously\, Mitchell Algus Gallery and Magdalena Keck Gallery will present three other series: LIVE TRANSMISSION DRAWINGS\, PORTRAITS FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY and HANDWRITING THE CONSTITUTION. Together\, the solo exhibitions at the three galleries will provide unprecedented insight into the artist’s body of conceptual work.  The opening reception at Anita Rogers Gallery will take place on Wednesday\, May 1\, 6-8pm. The artist will be in attendance. \nTIME STUDIES \nAn attempt at understanding the meaning of life yielded a process begun by observing closely and making a visual and color-coded accounting of how personal time was spent. TIME STUDIES yielded daily reports\, monthly summaries\, ends of the year reports\, etc. The large body of work was carefully studied at the end of 10 years. Since the conceptual base for the work was strong\, there seemed to be only two alternatives: end the process and identify it as a 10-year work\, or make a lifetime commitment to it. I chose the latter and the process is now in its 47th year. Daily statistical recording continues in small notebooks. Color coded recordings\, beyond the statistics\, are done during circumscribed periods of time\, i.e. a two-month residency\, a clearly defined segment of time. \nLETTERPRESS EDITIONS \nI made my first letterpress piece in 1978 in French: Le desordre est une forme d’art while teaching in the French-American bilingual school in San Francisco. Over the years I have done letterpress work in Polish\, Czech\, Italian\, Hungarian and English\, most often for an installation or performance. In 2016\, thanks to residencies at the Emily Harvey foundation in Venice\, I have done special editions in Italian. The most elaborate editions are PERDUTO E TROVATO A VENEZIA and ITSELF using 100 year old handcarved wooden letters\, printed at La Bottega del Tintoretto in Canareggio with master printer Roberto Mazzetto and with the collaboration of Pier Paolo Pregnolato of Damocle Editions. Editions of 12 with detailed colophon pages\, signed and numbered. \nSILVERPOINT DRAWINGS \nI was asked to make drawings with silverpoint for an exhibition. I painted white watercolor paper with black gesso and drew silver points on the black ground\, each one pointing in a different direction\, image and concept becoming one and the same. \n– Morgan O’Hara \nO’Hara received the Lee Krasner Award for Lifetime Achievement as an artist in October 2018 and her work is in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York\, The National Gallery in Washington D.C.\, and The British Museum in London among many other institutions worldwide. \nPORTRAITS FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY and HANDWRITING THE CONSTITUTION will be on view at Mitchell Algus Gallery April 27 – June 2. Magdalena Keck Gallery is exhibiting LIVE TRANSMISSION DRAWINGS at Roll and Hill February 27- May 13. \nOn Saturday\, May 4\, Anita Rogers Gallery invites the public to join us for a session of HANDWRITING THE CONSTITUTION from 2:30-4:30pm. We will have copies of documents created to protect human rights\, pens and paper to share. There will be a reception hosted by Magdalena Keck Gallery immediately following the session at the nearby Roll & Hill showroom from 4:30 – 6pm. \nFor further information and photographs\, please contact Elizabeth Thompson at elizabeth.thompson@anitarogersgallery.com\, or call 347.604.2346. SUMMARY:Opening reception: ‘Soto. Vibrations\, 1950–1960’
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of work by Soto\, art history’s leading kinetic artist. Soto explored the dematerialization\, or ‘disintegration’ of the art object\, breaking new ground while anticipating conceptual strategies to come. Hauser & Wirth is pleased to present the first exhibition to focus on the critical first decade of the artist’s life in Paris\, from 1950 – 1960. During this period\, Soto exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles alongside established European artists like Josef Albers and Fernand Léger as well as members of Grupo Madí\, an artist collective founded in Buenos Aires in 1946. A believer in art historical evolution\, Soto built upon the work of the masters that preceded him in order to challenge figurative tradition via abstraction and repetition. Imbued with vibration and movement\, these early works constitute a breakthrough in Soto’s output\, laying crucial groundwork for his later kinetic works and the uniquely fluid style that shaped his artistic vocabulary. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening reception: ‘Lorna Simpson. Darkening’
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of works by Lorna Simpson in New York. Over the past 30 years\, Simpson has continued to probe questions about the nature of representation\, identity\, gender\, race\, and history\, while expanding her oeuvre to encompass various media including film and video\, painting\, drawing\, and\, most recently\, sculpture. Her powerful works entangle viewers in an equivocal web of meaning: what is unseen and left unsaid is equally important as that which the artist does disclose. In this exhibition of new paintings\, collages\, and sculptures\, Simpson continues to engage viewers with layers of paradox\, threading dichotomies of figuration and abstraction\, destruction and creation\, past and present. \n  Save
