SUMMARY:Optics: Queer Eye(s)
DESCRIPTION:With increasing visibility for queer folks and queer stories in popular culture (see: the Netflix reboot of Queer Eye\, FX’s Pose\, and RuPaul’s Drag Race—now in its eleventh season)\, it’s important to take a look at how we got here. This session of Optics commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots\, and examines how Stonewall’s legacy has contributed to a visual language of queer resistance over the last 50 years. How have images of queerness—and those made from a queer lens—troubled and expanded (inter)national understandings of human rights\, community\, anger\, and celebration? \nJoin journalist and curator Sarah Burke\, photographer Naima Green\, performance and queer studies scholar Kareem Khubchandani\, and series host Reya Sehgal for this meditation on what the queer eye can see\, featuring a special performance by Untitled Queen. \nThis is a free event\, but please register in advance. ICP Members have access to preferred seating in our reserved members’ section. \nOur ICP Museum–public program combination ticket grants $10 entry starting at 4:30 PM to those attending the program. Tickets are only available online when you register for the program. \nAbout the Series\nHosted by artist and curator Reya Sehgal\, Optics: A New Way of Seeing Contemporary Culture invites critics\, artists\, and imagemakers to analyze the pictures that shape contemporary culture and current events. The series considers the images\, visual communications\, and vision-related technologies that impact our times. In our current image-saturated society of 24-hour news cycles\, social media\, and memes\, an understanding of the ways in which pictures are shaped\, produced\, distributed\, remixed\, and go viral is vital to an understanding of culture itself. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Exhibition Walkthrough of ‘Guillermo Kuitca’ with Hernan Diaz Alonso and Analia Saban
DESCRIPTION:Guillermo Kuitca’s paintings collapse\, mirror\, and fracture the architectural structures and spaces they depict\, placing the viewer in spatial and temporal limbo. On the occasion of the artist’s new work presented in ‘Guillermo Kuitca\,’ join us for a walkthrough with Director & CEO of Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)\, Hernan Diaz Alonso and renowned Argentine artist Analia Saban to talk about Kuitca’s work through the lens of architecture. \nThis event is free\, however\, due to limited capacity reservations are recommended. Click here to register. \nAbout Hernan Diaz Alonso\nHernan Diaz Alonso assumed the role of SCI-Arc director beginning in the 2015 academic year. He has been a distinguished faculty member since 2001\, serving in several leadership roles\, including coordinator of the graduate thesis program from 2007–10\, and graduate programs chair from 2010–15. He is widely credited with spearheading SCI-Arc’s transition to digital technologies\, and he played a key role in shaping the school’s graduate curriculum over the last decade. \nIn parallel to his role at SCI-Arc\, Diaz Alonso is principal of the Los Angeles–based architecture office Xefirotarch. His multidisciplinary practice is praised for its work at the intersection of design\, animation\, interactive environments\, and radical architectural explorations. Over the course of his career as an architect and educator\, Diaz Alonso has earned accolades for his leadership and innovation\, as well as his ability to build partnerships among varied constituencies. In 2005 he was the winner of MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program (YAP) competition\, and in 2012 he received the Educator of the Year award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He won the 2013 AR+D Award for Emerging Architecture and a 2013 Progressive Architecture Award for his design of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Pavilion/Museum in Patagonia\, Argentina. \nDiaz Alonso’s architectural designs have been featured in exhibitions at the Venice Architecture Biennale\, the London Architecture Biennale\, and ArchiLab in Orleans\, France\, as well as included in exhibitions at such leading museums as the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); the Art Institute of Chicago; and MAK Centre\, Vienna. The work has been widely published in magazines\, journals\, and books\, including the Excessive monograph of Xefirotarch. The office is currently working on a new monograph to be published by Thames and Hudson. Diaz Alonso’s work is in the permanent collections of the FRAC Centre\, Orleans\, France; SFMOMA; the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Thyssen-Bornemisza\, the MAK Museum\, Vienna; and the Art Institute of Chicago. \nA gifted educator\, Diaz Alonso has been acknowledged throughout the years with prestigious appointments; these include Yale University’s Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship of Architectural Design (2010)\, Visiting Design Studio Faculty at the GSAPP at Columbia University (2004–10)\, an ongoing appointment as architectural design professor in the Urban Strategies Postgraduate Program at the University of Applied Arts Vienna\, and as a Distinguished Faculty Member at SCI-Arc. In spring 2015 he served as Yale University’s Eero Saarinen Professor of Architectural Design. \nAbout Analia Saban\nAnalia Saban dissects and reconfigures traditional notions of painting\, often using the medium of paint as the subject itself. Blurring the lines between painting and sculpture\, imagery and objecthood\, her work frequently includes plays on art historical references and traditions. Paintings expand to sculptural forms and sculptures are presented in two dimensions\, using the process of trial and error with new techniques and technology. Her unconventional methods such as unweaving paintings\, laser-burning wood and canvas and molding forms in acrylic paint remain central to her practice as she continues to explore art-making processes and materials in relation to her daily experience. Dealing with issues of fragility\, balance\, technique and experimentation\, Saban’s connection with everyday objects is at the forefront of her investigation of tangible materials and the metaphysical properties of artworks. \nBorn in 1980 in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Saban currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She received a BFA in Visual Arts from Loyola University in New Orleans in 2001\, followed by an MFA in New Genres at the University of California in Los Angeles in 2005. Saban’s works are represented in the collections of the Hammer Museum at UCLA\, Museum of Contemporary Art\, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles; Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College in New York; Norton Museum of Art in Florida; Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Fundación Proa in Buenos Aires\, among others. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Oscar Murillo: Manifestation
DESCRIPTION:David Zwirner is pleased to present new paintings by Oscar Murillo at the gallery’s London location. Including examples from several ongoing bodies of work that he seamlessly moves between\, the exhibition will highlight the artist’s expansive studio practice and the multiple ways in which he engages with the act of painting. On view for the first time will be a new body of work initiated by Murillo in 2018 that takes a more deliberate approach to the layering of information—one that is concerned simultaneously with erasure and retention\, mimicking the ways information is often received in today’s world. \nMurillo’s work will concurrently be on view in a solo presentation at Kettle’s Yard\, Cambridge\, in England (through June 23\, 2019) and in a two-person exhibition with Tony Cokes at The Shed\, New York (June 19 through August 25\, 2019). Murillo has been represented by David Zwirner since 2013. This show is his fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. \nOscar Murillo is one of four artists shortlisted to win the Turner Prize this year. Murillo has been nominated by an independent panel of judges based on two current exhibitions of his work: Violent Amnesia\, on view at Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge through June 23\, 2019\, and Oscar Murillo l Zhang Enli\, which continues through May 31\, 2019\, at chi K11 art museum\, in Shanghai\, as well as for his participation in the 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art\, We don’t need another hero\, in 2018. The other shortlisted artists are Lawrence Abu Hamdan\, Helen Cammock\, and Tai Shani. \nIn June 2019\, Murillo will present new works in Collision/Coalition\, an exhibition with Tony Cokes at The Shed in New York. \nImage: Oscar Murillo\, untitled (news)\, 2016–2019 (detail) \n  Save

SUMMARY:Film Screening\, Redoubt (2018; 134 mins.\, 3 secs.)
DESCRIPTION:At the center of Matthew Barney’s Redoubt project (2016–19) is an eponymous two-hour film (2018; 134 mins.\, 3 secs.) that traces the story of a wolf hunt\, intertwining the theme of the hunt with those of mythology and artistic creation. Redoubt was shot in Idaho’s rugged Sawtooth Mountains and continues Barney’s long-standing preoccupation with landscape as both a setting and subject in his films. Structured as a series of six hunts that unfold over seven days and nights\, the film loosely adapts the myth of Diana\, goddess of the hunt\, and Actaeon\, a hunter who accidentally trespasses on her and is punished. Like most of Barney’s previous films\, Redoubt contains no dialogue; instead\, the characters communicate through choreography that echoes and foreshadows their encounters with wildlife. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Matthew Barney: Redoubt. SUMMARY:Conversation\, Material Conflict: A Conversation with Tomashi Jackson and Naomi Safran-Hon

SUMMARY:Bellwethers: The Culture of Controversy
DESCRIPTION:On three consecutive Tuesdays this spring – May 21\, May 28\, and June 4 – The Drawing Center will present a new program series\, Bellwethers: The Culture of Controversy\, which will convene a prominent group of writers\, cultural critics\, and artists to respond to a cultural “bellwether” and take it in their own interpretative direction. Each session examines a timely indicator\, word\, or phrase emblematic of a polemical socio-political topic of our moment and that impacts art as well as broader cultural production. \nTuesday\, June 4 at 6:30pm\nCANCELLATION\nWith Anna Khachiyan and Natasha Stagg\nForget the old style of enforcing political correctness—the new culture of cancellation is socially swift and unilaterally unpredictable. On the one hand\, “cancel culture” has been used to swiftly punish perceived criminal behavior; on the flip side\, it can operate as a means to extinguish nuanced debate and cast out public figures in trials by Twitter. How do we navigate this phenomenon that some see as inherently undemocratic and anti-nuanced and others praise as effective in a world in which the law is statistically proven to fail women and people of color? How does cancellation impact revisionist artistic and political histories? \nAnna Khachiyan is a writer based in New York. Khachiyan is co-host of the podcast Red Scare\, and an occasional art critic. She was “cancelled” by Twitter in 2018 due to her polemical commentaries\, and is a leading voice on the millennial left. \nNatasha Stagg is a writer based in New York. Stagg’s work has appeared in Affidavit\, Artforum\, Bookforum\, The Brooklyn Rail\, CR Fashion Book\, DIS Magazine\, n+1\, The Paris Review\, Spike Art Quarterly\, among many other publications. Stagg’s debut novel Surveys was published by Semiotext(e)/Native Agents in 2016\, and her book of critical essays will be published by Semiotext(e) later this year. \nImage: L to R\, Natasha Stagg and Anna Khachiyan. \n  Save

SUMMARY:A Weekend of Transformation through Art & Music
DESCRIPTION:A Weekend of Transformation through Art & Music \n  \nPlease join us for our events on Friday\, May 31st and June 1st! \n  \nFriday May 31st – 7:00 to 9:00 pm \n  \nJoin Deborah Colton\, Lowell Boyers and Julia Robinson for an energizing evening of art and music!  Lowell Boyer’s current exhibition\, Inscapes\, are portraits of inner landscapes and imaginary worlds that we actually live in.  Julia Robinson (Julia & the Standards) will perform\, along with her accomplished Saxophone player\, Cory Wilson and extraordinary pianist\, Jeremy Nuncio. \n  \nThis evening will enhance your senses and will evoke the essence and soulful spirit that is within! \n  \nBeverages and valet are complimentary \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSaturday\, June 1st:  2:00 to 5:00 pm Open House and Walking Tour with our Artists of our Current Exhibitions. \n  \n2:30 to 3:00 pm – A Moment with Lowell Boyers. Exhibition: Inscapes \n  \n“I see the creative imagination as a birthright belonging to every being\, and my work is fundamentally a textural portrayal of the unfolding blossoming of various stages of awakening to that active nature.” states Lowell. \n  \nLowell Boyers lives and works in Chelsea New York and is a graduate of the Yale University MFA program and the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA). For 30 years his work has been included in both private and institutional exhibitions in Abu Dhabi\, Dallas\, Germany\, Houston\, India\, London\, Los Angeles\, New York\, and St. Louis. With Inscapes being Boyer’s forth solo exhibition at Deborah Colton Gallery\, since 2004 Colton has presented Boyer’s art in many national locations\, including several times in Dallas and as far reaching as the Abu Dhabi Art Fair. \n  \n3:00 to 3:30 pm – A Conversation with Grayson Chandler. Exhibition: Cocoon \n  \nGrayson explores concepts of metamorphosis\, emergence\, and notions of self\, in relation to the human psyche. Drawing from aspects of these concepts\, this body of work attempts to transcend a sense of duality – the perception of self and other as separate – instead instilling in viewers a state of awareness that begins and ends with the self.  Born in Houston\, Grayson is a recent BFA Art Studio graduate from the University of North Texas.  This is his second solo exhibition at Deborah Colton Gallery\, with his first being a huge success in 2016. \n  \n  \n3:30 to 4:00 pm – Presentation with Felipe Lopez. Exhibition: The Want In My Nature \n  \nWith a focus on water\, Lopez creates a conversation around how this precious resource is a part of our daily lives and our actions regarding its preservation. Our culture expresses a want to protect nature but often falls short when it comes to delivery. Other works within the show are constructed to delve into our connection to water: from lasting impressions of how the ocean meets the land within the Ambient Horizon series along with Ab Aqua Libertas – from water comes freedom\, a video piece which shows the strength\, wisdom\, and beauty of four women through a natural common process (for mature audiences only). \n  \nBorn in New York\, a first generation Cuban American\, Felipe Lopez has acquired an impressive resume and exhibition history as a multifaceted artist. Exhibitions include those in Houston\, Miami\, New York\, Spain and Greece. Focusing on the natural\, Lopez’s work has been noted in multiple publications including an essay entitled Felipe Lopez: The Allure of Water by Raphael Rubinstein and an article by Houston Chronicle’s Molly Glentzer as a review for his recent exhibition: The Liquidity of a Right. Lopez continues to break boundaries within the concept of contemporary sculpture along with multi-faceted installation including video\, while still remaining true to the essence of painting and presentation. Although Lopez has been mentored by Colton for many years\, this is his very first solo exhibition at Deborah Colton Gallery… with a bright future ahead of him. \n  \nArtwork featured: \nLowell Boyers\, Skyscapes\, 2018\, Acrylic\, Resin\, Watercolor\, & Ink on Canvas\, 48 x 58 inches \n  \n  \nDeborah Colton Gallery is founded on being an innovative showcase for ongoing presentation and promotion of strong historical and visionary contemporary artists world-wide\, whose diverse practices include painting\, works on paper\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, performance\, conceptual future media and public space installations. The Gallery aspires to provide a forum through connecting Texas\, national and international artist s to make positive change. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Christina Kruse: Base and Balance
DESCRIPTION:Helwaser Gallery presents Christina Kruse: Base and Balance \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, May 30\, 2019 from 6 to 8pm \nExhibition Dates: May 30–July 25\, 2019 \nHelwaser Gallery is pleased to announce Christina Kruse: Base and Balance\, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Christina Kruse (b. 1976\, Germany). The exhibition presents the artist’s newest body of sculptural work completed over the last two years\, showcasing the development of a new dimension to her artistic practice\, which had primarily been focused on photography. Drawing connections between rationality and organic forms\, Kruse’s artistic practice thrives on the notion of construction\, bringing together multiple elements into abstract forms. The show will be on view from May 30–July 25\, 2019\, with an opening reception on Thursday\, May 30\, 2019. The exhibition coincides with the 100th year anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus\, and is also accompanied by a catalogue\, with the foreword written by Glenn Adamson and essays by Joerg Trempler and John Zinsser. \nKruse’s works combine various primary shapes and forms—made out of wood\, bronze\, and occasionally\, brass—into integrated wholes. Works on show include Detached (2019)\, a spherical work suspended from the ceiling by a thin\, bronze rod. Although the work appears as un-centered\, tilted\, and off-balance\, the work’s internal wooden structure was conceived as a means of purposefully shifting the work’s center of mass forward. The work stands in conversation with Settled (2018)\, a large-scale standing bronze sculpture\, where a circular “head” is supported by an elongated stem. Accompanying these works are a selection of studies rendered in pencil and chalk; almost diagrammatic in spirit\, these preparatory sketches reveal the structures\, shape\, and color relations that inform her process of constructing sculptures. \nAcross her body of sculptural work\, rectilinear forms are often counterbalanced with rounded spheres\, weighted by intense shades of black\, grey\, and white. Through emphasizing the weight and depth of each component\, as well as their surface treatments and color applications\, Kruse’s works achieve a sense of equilibrium. Although characterized by geometry and line\, her sculptures inspire uncanny references to the human figure\, inviting viewers to imagine and investigate beyond the formal limits of the sculptures that she presents. Presented in loose groupings\, her sculptures recall the notion of a tableau vivant\, reflecting her own interest in the artistic practices of leading Bauhaus practitioners such as Oskar Schlemmer. These works are a new treatment of the human figure—a motif that figured prominently in the artist’s previous photographic collage works. \nAbout the artist \nChristina Kruse (b. 1979\, Germany) is a New York-based multi-disciplinary artist who works across the fields of photography\, painting\, and sculpture. Her ongoing body of sculptural series combines bronze\, marble and wood in standing arrangements that reference geometry. Although grounded in structure\, balance and stability\, Kruse’s sculptures nevertheless evoke similarities to the human head and face\, drawing connections between rationality and the oftentimes more capricious side of human life. \nPrevious significant works include Dystonia (2013)\, a three-part performance artwork where Kruse confronts the instability of the human lived experience. Getting into a purpose-built aluminum sculpture calibrated to automatically right itself after being pushed\, Kruse allows herself to be taken along by the movements of the sculpture as it struggles to right itself in the face of multiple pushes and forces from all sides. Her earlier photographic and collage works draw on her personal biography\, often deploying self-portraits layered with tape\, watercolor\, ink\, and other media in her formal compositions. \nKruse’s artistic practice thrives on the notion of construction—that a work of art can necessarily be produced out of multiple elements that fit and connect with one another. Kruse is a recipient of the GLAAD award for Best Emerging Artist in Photography (2005). Her works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in New York\, France\, Austria\, and Germany\, amongst others. \nPRESS CONTACT \nThomas Brown\, Olu & Company \n+1 (978) 808-1961 / thomas@olucompany.com \n  Save

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Piero Manzoni ‘Materials’ & ‘Lines’
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the ongoing exhibition ‘Materials of His Time’ ‘Lines\,’ two concurrent exhibitions of work by Piero Manzoni\, please join us in the Hauser & Wirth Publisher Bookshop for a conversation moderated by Choghakate Kazarian\, with Brett Littman\, Jack McGrath\, and Richard Tuttle. \nThe panel will discuss the life\, artwork\, and process of Piero Manzoni\, highlighting the recently published catalogue ‘Piero Manzoni. Materials’ & ‘Piero Manzoni. Lines’. \nAbout ‘Piero Manzoni. Materials & Lines’\nThe two-volume publication highlights two key threads in the work of artist Piero Manzoni (1933–63). ‘Materials’ covers Manzoni’s years of prolific creation leading up to his untimely death in which he experimented with a wide variety of media in his paintings\, including sewn cloth\, cotton wool\, fiberglass\, synthetic and natural fur\, straw\, cobalt chloride\, stones\, fluorescent polystyrene\, pellets\, packaging\, and more. ‘Lines’ delves into the eponymous body of work of fundamental importance to his well-known Achromes—paintings without color\, which aimed to striped his work of any expression. Extensively illustrated\, both volumes feature several art historical essays alongside a host of archival material\, making this one of the most comprehensive sources on the artist to date. \nAbout the Participants \nChoghakate Kazarian is a curator and art historian. She has been a curator at Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris from 2011 to 2018 and has taught at the Ecole du Louvre. Her exhibitions include ‘Lucio Fontana\, rétrospective’; ‘Henry Darger\, 1892–1973’; ‘Karel Appel\, l’art est one fête !’ and ‘Piero Manzoni\, Achrome’. She has edited several exhibition catalogs and published various essays on post-war art. \nBrett Littman has been the Director of the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in Long Island City\, New York since May 2018. He was Executive Director of The Drawing Center from 2007–2018; Deputy Director of MoMA PS1 from 2003–2007; Co-Director of Dieu Donné Papermill from 2001–2003 and Associate Director of Urban Glass from 1996–2001. \nLittman’s interests are multi-disciplinary: he has overseen more than seventy-five exhibitions and personally curated more than 20 exhibitions over the last decade\, dealing with visual art\, outsider art\, craft\, design\, architecture\, poetry\, music\, science\, and literature. He was named the curator of Frieze Sculpture at Rockefeller Center (2019 – 2020) and is also an art critic and lecturer and an active essayist for museum and gallery catalogues\, in addition to writing articles for a wide range of U.S. and international art\, fashion\, and design magazines. \nA native New Yorker\, Brett Littman received a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from France in 2017 and his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of California\, San Diego. \nJack McGrath is an art historian based in New York. He has taught art history and critical theory at Barnard College\, Columbia University School of the Arts\, Cooper Union\, Parsons the New School for Design\, and Yeshiva College. His writing has appeared in Frieze\, October Files\, and Piero Manzoni: Nuovi Studi. In 2017 he curated the exhibition Visual Notes for an Upside-Down World at PPOW Gallery in New York. He is currently at work on a monograph of Piero Manzoni based on his doctoral dissertation. \nRichard Tuttle‘s direct and seemingly simple deployment of objects and gestures reflects a careful attention to materials and experience. Rejecting the rationality and precision of Minimalism\, Tuttle embraced a handmade quality in his invention of forms that emphasize line\, shape\, color\, and space as central concerns. He has resisted medium-specific designations for his work\, employing the term drawing to encompass what could otherwise be termed sculpture\, painting\, collage\, installation\, and assemblage. Overturning traditional constraints of material\, medium\, and method\, Tuttle’s works sensitize viewers to their perceptions. His working process\, in which one series begets the next\, is united by a consistent quest to create objects that are expressions of their own totality. \n– \nThe event is free and open to the public. Space is limited\, RSVP is required. \n  Save

\nTuesday\, May 28 at 6:30pm\nPANIC\nWith Andrea Long Chu and Jamieson Webster\n“Panic” is a pervasive\, if abused\, term used to describe our reaction to our contemporary landscape and is affixed to any number of issues: gender identity\, immigration\, climate\, globalism\, Brexit\, Trump\, and Russia. Our current Age of Anxiety is super charged by the 24-7 newstainment cycle\, designed to keep us flickering through states of hysteria and scandal\, worry and outrage. Is there any relief from this panic? How does this time relate to other periods of collective hysteria? \nAndrea Long Chu is a writer\, designer\, doctoral candidate\, and sad trans girl in Brooklyn. Chu’s writing has been published by the New York Times\, Affidavit\, Artforum\, Bookforum\, and n+1. She also publishes a monthly journal on television called Paper View. Her first book Females will be published by Verso this October. \nJamieson Webster is a psychoanalyst and cultural critic based in New York. Weber is the author of The Life and Death of Psychoanalysis (2011) and Conversion Disorder: Listening to the Body in Psychoanalysis (2018); she also co-wrote\, with Simon Critchley\, Stay\, Illusion! The Hamlet Doctrine (2013). She teaches at the New School and supervises doctoral students in clinical psychology at the City University of New York. SUMMARY:Simon Stockhausen: A Workshop Concert\, A Tribute to his mother Mary Bauermeister
DESCRIPTION:6 -7:00PM\nReception at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery\n100 Eleventh Avenue @ 19th Street\, New York City \n7:15PM\nPerformance at The Kitchen\n512 West 19 Street\, New York City \nSeating is limited. Please RSVP to rsvp@michaelrosenfeldart.com \nIn conjunction with the exhibition Mary Bauermeister: Live in Peace or Leave the Galaxy\, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is pleased to present Simon Stockhausen: A Workshop Concert\, A Tribute to his mother Mary Bauermeister\, which will be held on Tuesday\, May 21\, 2019 at 7:15PM at The Kitchen. The interactive performance will be preceded by a reception at the gallery from 6:00-7:00PM. Stockhausen is a noted composer\, musician and sound designer with an interest in exploring uncharted sonic territory\, combining acoustic instruments and field recordings with electronic sounds and deriving sound and music from art works and images in general. Since 2016\, Stockhausen has collaborated with Bauermeister\, fusing his interests in music and art together. \nSimon Stockhausen (b.1967) commenced his musical education (piano\, saxophone\, drums\, synthesiser\, composition) at the age of five\, and began performing in his father Karlheinz Stockhausen’s works at the age of 12. After his final exams in 1986\, he started touring the world with the Stockhausen ensemble and also co-produced electronic music for two operas by his father. Simon’s collaboration with his brother Markus Stockhausen over the last 20 years in the field of jazz and improvised music has generated numerous CD releases —on record labels such as ECM\, EMI\, and LARGO— as well as soundtracks for film and theatre productions. \nSince the early 1990s\, Simon has composed music for various German chamber ensembles and in 2012 he staged his first large-scale orchestral work Doktrin der Ruhe\, commissioned by the Hamburger Symphoniker orchestra. Since 1998 he has written and arranged music for many German theatres\, and in 2003 began composing film-scores for documentary films and short movies including Disengagement (2007) and Trip to Asia (2008). \nIn 2009 Simon created patchpool.net\, where he publishes commercial sound libraries for software synthesisers\, effect plug-ins and samplers as well as sound files for post production and sound design. Since reuniting with his mother in 2016\, Simon has written several compositions for her exhibition openings and has also produced video animations of her artwork. \nImage: Simon Stockhausen in Cologne\, Germany\, 2019. Stockhausen performed with his mother in conjunction with the exhibition KÖLN 68! Protest. Pop. Provocation at Kölnisches Stadtmuseum.\n  Save

SUMMARY:RLWindow – ONTOPO : ¿Hablas Turista?
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception & Performances : Sat. May 18\, 4-6pm \nOpening Performances \n Audio | Keetin Mayakara \nDance | Juri Onuki \nAudio | Kamau Patton \nRLWindow Installation Series \nPriscilla Jeong | Kamau Patton | Amy Yao \nOrganizer | Jon Santos \n RYAN LEE is pleased to announce ONTOPO : ¿Hablas Turista? organized by Jon Santos with site-specific photographic window installations by Priscilla Jeong\, Kamau Patton\, and Amy Yao from May 15 to August 15. Performances by Keetin Mayakara\, Juri Onuki\, and Kamau Patton will take place during the opening reception and in the gallery space. The project is site responsive to RLWindow designed to engage High Line visitors and tourists through architecture\, performance\, and participation. The RLWindow can be viewed on the High Line at 26th Street overlooking the gallery. \nONTOPO is an on-going series of performative and participatory projects based on collective creative exchange. The project reimagines the relationship between creating and consuming\, author and audience\, with a multi-faceted embrace of visual art\, cuisine\, design\, sound\, architecture\, and performance. The project’s core is the willingness to experiment and the collective energy of contributing artists from different regions. Each site creates freedom from familiar constraints allowing for more present participation among artists and audience. \nONTOPO : ¿Hablas Turista? meaning “Do You Speak Tourist?” references a project Priscilla Jeong and Amy Yao created in Tulum\, Mexico. They were part of a group that Santos spontaneously assembled for recreation\, contemplation\, rest\, artistic production\, and performance. In this context\, the artists’ surroundings and their temporary community informed the works. The artists reconsider their voices and modes of production outside their studio within the dynamic context of localism and tourism. Juri Onuki and Kamau Patton participated in the Magick City and Catskills Zen Do ONTOPO projects respectively. Collectively the artists’ experiences and works fold into the RLWindow site and project series. \nPriscilla Jeong’s site specific installation\, Logee’s Growth Habits 1\,2\,3 (2018)\, was originally created during ONTOPO in Mexico. The work consisted of three pillow cases. Each pillowcase contains excerpts of a plant catalogue specializing in tropical exotic plants in the US paired with locally sourced “exotic” materials. Jeong focuses on the entanglement of digital sociology\, labor\, gender\, and technology. Her work explores contemporary spiritualism with an emphasis on the role of humanics and machinics. \nJuri Onuki’s dance and choreography responds to George Miyasaki’s abstract expressionist work on view in the gallery and his legacy. Her approach posits Zen philosophy as a stabilizing mechanism for Japanese Americans\, like Miyasaki\, confronting a period of intense discrimination against them after World War II. Onuki will question Japanese American identity by performing everyday gestures and movements based on Miyasaki’s Bay Area-inflected brand of abstract expressionism. Onuki is a Japanese artist working primarily in performance as a dancer and choreographer. \nThe Tel_ project is Kamau Patton’s opening acoustic and social performance. The work derives its name from the archeological term ‘Tell’\, an artificial mound formed from the accumulated refuse of people living on the same site for hundreds of years. The performance project is an examination of history or memory considered as layers and residue. Tel_ aims to question how the nature of memory has changed in relation to cyberspace and transmission technologies. Patton’s photo installation for RLWindow\, Masten Lake Rd\, Wurtsboro\, New York\, offers a ‘google view’ and vantage point of the natural features surrounding a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York where his original ONTOPO experience took place. \nJon Santos is the organizer of the ONTOPO : ¿Hablas Turista? project. Santos is an artist working in sound\, video\, design and installation. His works seek to expand graphic design beyond traditional media (print\, digital and screen based) towards participatory\, performative\, improvisational\, and experiential modes. As the founder of ONTOPO\, he is interested in exploring informal learning through site-specific and cross-platform performances. \nAmy Yao’s work was created in Mexico in 2018. The photographic work featured in RLWindow is a mixed-media installation created from freshly cooked bacon placed in the sand\, on top of found objects\, and on rubbish in the property where ONTOPO was being held. She is interested in making work in many different mediums informed by ideas of waste and consumption. \nRLWindow is a dedicated exhibition space for video\, installation\, and performance at the gallery engaging High Line visitors through a window. Capitalizing on the gallery’s position overlooking the High Line and its visibility to the 4.6 million yearly visitors\, RLWindow will show innovative\, experimental\, and collaborative projects by international\, contemporary artists\, both represented by the gallery and invited. By launching active programming in this site-specific space\, the gallery will expand its mission to work with leading artists and curators. \nFollow www.ontopo.net and @on_topo on Instagram for ongoing work updates. \nFollow the gallery and project on Instagram at : #RLWindow #ryanleegallery @ryanleegallery \nFor press inquiries\, contact press@ryanleegallery.com or 212-397-0742 \n  Save
