SUMMARY:"Look Both Ways: The Illicit Liaison Between Image and Information" Reception
DESCRIPTION:School of Visual Arts presents Look Both Ways: The Illicit Liaison Between Image and Information\, a new exhibition curated by Debbie Millman\, chair of the MPS Branding program at SVA. This exhibition brings together a wide range of typographic work from 60 individual artists\, including Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Shepard Fairey\, Dave Eggers\, Deborah Kass\, Jenny Holzer\, Miranda July\, Kim Gordon\, and more\, from Millman’s personal collection and beyond. Look Both Ways is free and open to the public\, and will be on view from August 24 through September 21 at the SVA Chelsea Gallery. The reception will take place on Friday\, September 6\, 6:00 – 8:00pm. \nLook Both Ways showcases the many ways in which words\, text and information influence art\, design\, literature and music. Bold typographic expression has become the cultural currency of communication and the centerpiece of connection. Objects and experiences all around us now contain an inscription\, an impression or a point of view. Our bodies\, clothing\, public events\, sports\, politics and even the products we consume have given people\, by way of social media and the Internet\, an instantaneous way to communicate globally. On an intimately personal level\, tattoos have assumed the atavistic power that religious amulets once had to convey messages about ourselves\, with the immediate power of images and words. This dynamic is evident today in all disciplines of visual communications\, reflecting the condition of our culture. \nThe works in this exhibition come largely from Millman’s own personal collection of text-based art. In addition to her work as an educator and leader at SVA\, Millman is an acclaimed designer\, writer\, and strategist and has been hosting her “Design Matters” podcast for more than 14 years. \n“I am thrilled to partner with SVA to share this selection of typography works from a group of innovative and outspoken artists\, several from my own personal collection\,” said curator and MPS Branding chair Debbie Millman. “This exhibition is a stark reminder of the power language has to rule all facets of culture. These works will undoubtedly incite many passionate discussions.” \n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Generation ♀: How Contemporary Women Artists Are Re-Shaping Today’s Art World
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing experts on compelling subjects of relevance and interest to members and visitors to the Bruce Museum\, as well as the communities of greater Fairfield County and beyond\, Bruce Museum Presents launches on Thursday\, September 5\, 2019 at 6:00 pm\, with Generation ♀: How Contemporary Women Artists Are Re-Shaping Today’s Art World. \nJennifer Blei Stockman\, producer of the Emmy-nominated 2018 HBO documentary The Price of Everything\, moderates a wide-ranging dialogue and exploration with four major contemporary women artists: painter and sculptor Nicole Eisenman; conceptual visual artist Lin Jingjing; painter and sculptor Paula DeLuccia Poons; and photographer and filmmaker Laurie Simmons. \nA renowned collector of contemporary art\, Stockman is the former board chair of the Guggenheim Museum and a founder of the Bruce Museum Council. Her Nathaniel Kahn-directed documentary\, “The Price of Everything\,” explores the stratospheric-priced world of contemporary art. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and was the opening night film for 2018’s Greenwich International Film Festival. \nAwarded the Guggenheim fellowship (1996)\, the Carnegie Prize (2013)\, and the MacArthur “Genius Grant” (2015)\, Nicole Eisenman gained acclaim for her figurative painting but in recent years has earned critical praise for her sculpture as well. She co-founded the queer/feminist curatorial initiative Ridykeulous with A.L. Steiner\, and this summer was one of the artists who withdrew from the Whitney Biennial in protest of the museum’s leadership. \nLin Jingjing’s work deals primarily with social-political themes; particularly with how individuals define themselves against the pressures of the outside world\, vis-à-vis culture\, politics\, history\, and the economy. Her artwork spans performance\, installation\, painting\, mixed media\, video\, sound\, and LED lights. Jingjing’s works have been exhibited in major museums around the world\, including Neues Kunstforum in Cologne\, the National Art Museum of Chile in Santiago\, and Song Zhuang Art Museum in Beijing. \nPainter and sculptor Paula DeLuccia Poons and her husband\, artist Larry Poons\, have intersected with some of the greatest figures in the New York art world since the 1970s. A New Jersey native who studied at the Kansas City Art Institute\, Paula’s work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions\, from Barcelona to Brooklyn to Palm Beach. \nLaurie Simmons has been provocatively exploring women’s issues since the 1970s\, starting with her staged dollhouse scenes to create photographs that reference domestic tableaus. She is part of The Pictures Generation\, a name given to a group of artists from a 2009 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art that includes Cindy Sherman\, Barbara Kruger\, and Louise Lawler. \nDoors open 6:00 pm for a reception with light bites and beverages\, followed by the panel discussion and Q&A\, 7:00-8:30 pm. Seats are $30 for Museum members\, $45 for non-members. To reserve a seat at Generation ♀\, visit brucemuseum.org and click “Reservations\,” or call 203-869-0376. \n(A free screening of “The Price of Everything” will take place on Wednesday\, September 4\, 6:30 pm\, in the Bruce Museum’s Bantle Lecture Gallery. Advance registration is required at brucemuseum.org.) \n  Save

SUMMARY:Alex Kanevsky: Liberation and Disorientation
DESCRIPTION:On September 5\, Hollis Taggart will open its second solo exhibition of works by contemporary painter Alex Kanevsky. The exhibition\, titled Liberation and Disorientation\, will feature a selection of Kanevsky’s vibrant oil paintings\, exploring a wide range of subjects\, from land and seascapes to nudes to floral still lifes. Produced between 2018 and 2019—and most on view for the first time—the works highlight Kanevsky’s singular ability to capture the fluidity of time\, through a blending of figurative and abstract approaches and rich use of color. Kanevsky’s paintings are imbued with emotional potency and the possibility of a narrative left untold. An opening reception\, at which the artist will be present\, will be held on September 5\, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The exhibition will remain on view through September 28\, 2019. \n  \nInspired by the concept of unstable equilibrium in physics\, Kanevsky\, who studied theoretical mathematics at Vilnius University in Lithuania before pursuing an artistic career in the United States\, creates compositions that defy easy interpretation and understanding. This is particularly felt in his treatment of the figure\, which is often depicted in gestural\, intentionally imprecise strokes against landscapes rendered with large swaths of color. Free of geographical and architectural markers\, time\, and orienting symbols\, the figure is cast adrift within in an open field of possibility\, leaving the viewer to discern and impose their own understanding of the scene. For Kanevsky this dislocation is essential to his practice\, framing the experience as a “provocation” rather than a specific memory or moment caught on canvas. In this way\, Kanevsky also sees his paintings as “visual poems\,” emphasizing evocations of mood and atmosphere. \n  \nThe power of Kanevsky’s paintings to compel emotion and engagement is intrinsically tied to his process. As he layers and works the canvas\, prior approaches and experimentations are both removed and left visible\, creating the sensation that the painting is teeming with action. Bright\, shimmering colors collide\, shifting the contours of the scene in and out of focus and producing the feeling of depth beneath the surface plane. The instability with which Kanevsky’s works are laced also extends to his treatment of the body\, as he explores not only the inherent beauty of the human form but the ways in which it changes and moves\, in quick motions and through the slow passage of time. These studies and experimentations result in paintings that feel both incredibly tactile and ephemeral. \n  \nIn addition to a selection of nudes that encapsulate Kanevsky’s singular style and have become synonymous with his practice\, Liberation and Disorientation will include seascapes from the artist’s recent residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle\, Ireland. Created in the only place where Kanevsky still paints en plein air\, the paintings serve as a record of struggle: both Kanevsky’s own physical struggle while painting outside in adverse weather conditions (indeed\, one of the canvases even has a dent from flying away) as well as the broader struggles of the people of Ireland. The views of the crashing waves\, both lovely and melancholic\, speak to the rugged terrain\, which in itself elicits a range of emotions\, while also providing a potent metaphor for the human experience. \n  \nOf his seascapes Kanevsky says\, “Their fast movement was an observational problem. It was daunting\, until I saw their cyclical nature. They repeat themselves often enough\, and this makes it possible to paint directly from observation. Of course\, this is not an exact repetition. The situation is similar to an artist painting a strange portrait: each time the artist looks at the sitter\, there is a different person. A human face to be sure\, but not the same. The result is not a portrait of a single individual\, but an accumulative\, if somewhat ambiguous\, image of humanity.” Indeed\, both Kanevsky’s seascapes and portraits possess a kind of inherent velocity that results from containing so many different moments in one still image. \n  \nThe exhibition also includes paintings from the artist’s recent series Peony Variations (2019)\, in which Kanevsky applies his masterful brushwork to a peony set in the same place over the course of many days\, capturing the minute changes in its postures and positions. Influenced by the variations of artists such as Matisse and Hokusai—as well as his interest in musical variations—Kanevsky says “I am interested in variations that begin with the subject\, but then gradually become based on each other in succession.” \n  \nKanevsky also sometimes draws inspiration from vintage photographs. One of the most evocative works in the exhibition\, Girl with a Horse in Cerulleda (2019)\, began with Kanevsky’s fascination with a photograph he found while visiting a friend in a small town in Asturias\, Spain\, which depicts a small girl seated on a horse. In Kanevsky’s painterly interpretation\, the girl—centered on a canvas stretching 5.5 by 5.5 feet— appears within the magnitude of the Picos de Europa which surround her home. The viewer is confronted by the girl’s seeming comfort and ownership of this vast expanse as well as by her incredible vulnerability within it\, evoking a wide array of emotions and questions about her as a person in this landscape. The scene feels at once familiar and eerily foreign and incongruous\, forcing the viewer to\, once again\, grapple with their own response. \n___ \n  \nAlex Kanevsky was born in Russia in 1963 and studied theoretical mathematics at Vilnius University in Lithuania before coming to the United States in the early 1980s. He settled in Philadelphia and began painting classes at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts in 1989. After receiving a Pew Fellowship in 1997\, Kanevsky was able to devote himself to painting full time. He has exhibited his work throughout the United States\, Canada\, Italy\, the United Kingdom\, and Ireland\, and currently lives and works in New Hampshire. \n  \nAbout Hollis Taggart \nFounded in 1979\, Hollis Taggart—formerly known as Hollis Taggart Galleries—presents significant works of American art\, showcasing the trajectory of American art movements from the Hudson River School to American Modernism and Post-War and Contemporary eras. Its program is characterized by a deep commitment to scholarship and bringing to the fore the work of under-recognized artists. The gallery has sponsored several catalogue raisonné projects\, most recently for Surrealist artist Kay Sage\, and has been instrumental in advancing knowledge of such compelling artists as Alfred Maurer\, Arthur B. Carles\, and more recently\, Theodoros Stamos\, Marjorie Strider and Michael (Corinne) West. In summer 2015\, the gallery moved its primary location from the Upper East Side to Chelsea. In fall 2018\, it opened a newly renovated street-level location on W. 26th Street\, a private viewing and storage annex across the street\, and a project space at the High Line. With 40 years of experience\, Hollis Taggart is widely recognized by collectors and curators for its leadership\, expertise\, and openness\, on matters of art history\, and market trends and opportunities. \n### \nFor more information\, please contact: \nAlina Sumajin\, PAVE Communications & Consulting \nalina@paveconsult.com / 646-369-2050                                                                                  \n  Save

SUMMARY:New Visions: Activism through the Lens
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art\, in Chelsea\, NYC\, in collaboration with Seeing for Ourselves\, is pleased to announce New Visions: Activism Through the Lens\, the highlights of the Department of Probation’s (DOP’s) Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) photography program. \nProvided to New Yorkers serving probation and their neighbors\, the twelve-week course—conducted by the participatory photography non-profit Seeing for Ourselves (SFO)—imparts a marketable skill while encouraging participants to express themselves and share their stories through photography. Four million Americans have found themselves under this form of community supervision\, the sanction poorly understood by the general public. \nThe exhibit features photography by those residing in the seven underserved communities that a large portion of DOP’s clients call home: The South Bronx\, Harlem\, Bedford-Stuyvesant\, East New York\, Brownsville\, South Jamaica\, and Northern Staten Island. \nThe course follows the SFO paradigm established with public housing residents 2010-2013 that led to the globally-acclaimed\, award-winning Project Lives: New York Residents of Public Housing Photograph Their World published in 2015. The NeON Photography program—with funding obtained by SFO from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the city’s Work Progress Program\, and Sigma Corporation of America—will also lead to a book. Like the earlier publication\, the upcoming book will present a corrective portrait of the photographers’ communities\, a visual tale of and by a population sensationalized by the media; the tale supported by a first-time portrait of the function serving these Americans with something less than stellar success. And so the wider purpose of both works is to reform what remains broken. \nDirecting the program for the SFO/DOP partnership\, Chelsea Davis explains\, “Our program provides professional photography training\, as well as an opportunity\, environment\, and expectation for each participant to succeed. Each success looks different; for some it’s finding employment as a professional photographer\, for others it’s using photography as a tool for self-expression or as a creative outlet.” Ana Bermudez—commissioner of the agency recognized by the industry as its leader—states\, “NeON Photography is a transformative experience for those on probation and other community residents. It teaches the history of photography and provides complementary technical skills and the art of visual storytelling. The photographers have developed commercial advertising campaigns and undertaken event photography from Carnegie Hall to City Hall.  The classes have increased civic engagement and built stronger relationships—particularly with adults and other community members—while creating intrinsic change within the participants in how they view themselves\, and in their hope for their future and career path.” Denise Bibro observes\, “Hosting this exhibit returns me to 2004\, when the gallery featured Unbroken: Photography Subjects Speak Out—a pioneering participatory photography show.” Unbroken was curated by Denise Bibro and the very same principals who would eventually launch SFO. \n  Save

SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on August 23rd\, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. for the opening reception and meet the artists and dogs. Music will be provided by Anthony Brazeau. Enjoy a special performance by Martha Prewitt. The exhibits continue through September 21\, 2019. This event is free and open to the public. Parking is free in designated lots close by. \nExhibits include: \nTension by Michelle McGrath \nMcGrath incorporates rough textures and vibrant\, high contrast colors in her paintings and mixed media works. She finds beauty and intrigue in the gnarled roots of a tree; the crumbling plaster on a wall; and the wrinkled\, roughened hands of her grandmother. To explore these types of surfaces\, her materials are distorted by twisting\, ripping\, and pulling the pieces apart. For instance\, canvas is layered and stitched together in an uneven manner\, with knots and lumps added to the distressed surface. She views these distorted\, strained surfaces as different forces in her life that push or pull her in varied directions. \nThis exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nEmporium of Curiosities by Kelly Johnston \nKelly Johnston’s assemblage art is a treasure hunt and a great puzzle to her. She finds objects and while understanding their intended purpose\, she uses them completely out of context. She reassigns meaning to these found objects. An item is no longer a ruler; it is an arm or a leg. She is drawn to patterns\, textures and color and chooses items based on this. She prefers objects that are already broken. She says\, “Like a sculptor chips away at a block of marble to reveal the art inside…” This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, East. \nArpeggio by Glenda Creamer \nGlenda Creamer says: “In music\, when the notes are played individually and sequentially to form a chord\, is called an arpeggio. When I paint\, I apply one color at a time to form a painting. Altogether the paintings work together to form a show. I hope that you can see how music influences my work.” Creamer earned a B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. The exhibit is in the Centre Gallery\, West. \nRVA River Pix 2019 \nThe James River is Richmond’s defining resource. All during the year\, the James River Advisory Council (JRAC) works to conserve\, preserve and promote the river with clean-ups\, holiday boating parades and stewardship awareness. Art Works is only two blocks from the James. We’ve asked photographers to capture images of the river in and around Richmond for the annual James River Days JRAC celebrations. Jessie Boyland curated this exhibition held in the Skylight Gallery. \n  Save

SUMMARY:A Response to Sol LeWitt's Studio by Irene Barberis
DESCRIPTION:Variations and Compositions: \nA response to Sol LeWitt’s Studio \n3.15.19 – 6.1.19 \n  \nON VIEW: AUGUST 15 – 22\, 2019 \n  \nIrene Barberis\, an Australian/British artist\, met Sol LeWitt in 1974 and remained friends for over 30 years. She is the first artist to have the privilege to make work in Sol LeWitt’s studio in Chester and has produced new bodies of works responding to the space\, his studio processes and intersections in their oeuvres and his influence on her practice. The works shown here are from this period and are a prelude to major works constructed in Australia. \n“Often perceived as ‘composer’\, LeWitt worked every day in his Chester studio; immersed daily in his space\, I have responded to this idea in two series of works. Variations and Compositions. Variations react in a painterly manner\, to the studio publication copy of the 1974 ‘Incomplete Open Cubes’. Compositions: intervals\, are a series of colour dialogues with the 13 classical music tapes he left in his studio.” – Irene Barberis\, 2019 \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION: AUGUST 15\, 2019 @ 6:00pm \n  \nTo learn more about this exhibition\, please visit: https://saci-florence.edu/sol-lewitts-studio-saci-new-york-gallery \nPlease RSVP\, as our space tends to get quite full! SUMMARY:July-August Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:See 6 new art shows featuring Asheville\, NC artist Jacqui Fehl\, Joe Olney\, Carlie Collier\, Libby Clark\, Tom Conway\, and the July All-Media Show juried by Chuck and Mim Scalin. \nThe exhibits continue through August 17\, 2019. Admission is free and open to the public. Exhibits include: \n  \nPLAYcation by Jacqui Fehl\nFehl loves creating art\, but like many artists\, she reached a point recently where she felt tired\, uninspired\, and a bit burned out. She needed to get away\, but not in the literal sense. No luggage required for the creative holiday she had in mind; only some space\, time and permission to explore.\nWelcome to Fehl’s “PLAYcation”. This lively and eclectic show is truly a celebration of process\, which for Fehl is a series of happy accidents coupled with an intentional final composition. Each piece starts out with a spontaneous application of diverse materials such as: acrylics\, graphite\, pastels\, paint markers\, hand painted papers or book pages. Nothing is off-limits. Then the creative dance of scraping back\, sanding off and then layering back on begins.\nShe says: “This show was so much fun to create\, I may never come home!” This exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n________________________________________\nRecent Works by Joe Olney\nSee these abstract\, mixed media works in the Corner Gallery\n________________________________________\nWater Worlds: Color Abstractions of Water & Light by Carlie Collier\nCarlie Collier says:\nHumans all emerge from the watery realms of the womb and I myself have always continued to be a “water person”. I grew up on a point or peninsula with water on three sides. Now as an adult\, I return to the water regularly\, finding solace\, peace and restoration there.\nCollier uses layering to provide depth\, richness and mystery to an image. Color and reflections are two important manifestations of light that she uses in her photography. She is especially intrigued with reflections because of their magical dancing imagery. This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, East.\n________________________________________\nChildhood Fantasies as an Adult by Libby Clark\nAs a child with a vivid imagination\, Libby would gather her smaller toys and arrange scenes that suggested various stories she had created in her mind. As a sculpture major\, many of her sculptures illustrated similar ideas or current political events at that time.\nThis show is a collection of ideas\, inspired by some of her toys\, inherited items and gifts from friends and family who know her well. Libby arranged and photographed these. This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, West.\n________________________________________\nTruth Decay by Thomas Conway\nOriginally from Buffalo\, New York\, Tom Conway now resides in the city of Richmond where he photographs streetscapes\, skylines and the natural world found in the James River\, the many parks in the city and the botanical garden. Further afield he finds rural settings to capture digitally. His photography exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Cross Currents / Intercambio Cultural
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how issues of Latin American and Latinx identity and place are manifest in the practices of artists working in Chicago and Havana at a moment of social change and strained political relations between the United States and Cuba. \nCross Currents is the result of an artist exchange organized by the National Museum of Mexican Art. Six Chicago-based artists visited Havana in spring 2017 and six Cuban artists visited Chicago in fall 2017 and summer 2018. The work on view reflects the artists’ experiences and observations as they interacted with each other\, curators\, cultural spaces\, and neighborhoods during their trips. The project aims to open pathways of communication and understanding between the two cities and peer artists while also reflecting on their own artistic practices at this moment in time. \n\nARTISTS\nBased in Chicago: \n\nAlberto Aguilar (b. 1974\, Chicago)\nCarlos Barberena (b. 1972\, Nicaragua)\nDianna Frid (b. 1967\, Mexico City)\nRodrigo Lara Zendejas (b. 1981\, Toluca\, Mexico)\nHarold Mendez (b. 1977\, Chicago)\nEdra Soto (b. 1971\, San Juan\, Puerto Rico)\n\nBased in Havana: \n\nHumberto Díaz (b. 1975\, Cuba)\nSusana Pilar Delahante Matienzo (b. 1984\, Cuba)\nDouglas Pérez Castro (b. 1972\, Cuba)\nAlejandro González (b. 1974\, Cuba)\nCelia Irina González Álvarez (b. 1985\, Cuba) and Yunior Aguiar Perdomo (b. 1984\, Cuba)\nRequer (Renier Quer Figueredo\, b. 1983\, Cuba)\n\n\nTOUR\nA version of the exhibition will travel to El Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales\, Havana\, Cuba in January 2020. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Painting/Sculpture Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Marianne Boesky Gallery is pleased to present Painting/Sculpture\, an exhibition featuring Jennifer Bartlett\, Gina Beavers\, Lynda Benglis\, Sheila Hicks\, Donald Moffett\, Howardena Pindell\, and Frank Stella. The exhibition will explore contemporary painting and its relationship to the formal and conceptual language of sculpture. Painting/Sculpture will include works realized as three-dimensional sculpture\, but understood intrinsically as paintings\, as well as two-dimensional works that create the illusion of volume and layers. Together\, the works capture ongoing questions about how we draw the lines between artistic practices. Painting/Sculpture will be on view from July 10 through August 9 across both of the gallery’s Chelsea locations at 509 and 507 W. 24th Street. \n  Save
