SUMMARY:Opening Reception for September/October Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Richmond\, VA – artspace will open five new gallery exhibitions\, featuring a mixed media installation of large scale work by Baltimore artist Kim Rice\, abstract oil paintings by Virginia artist Kathleen Craig\, a painting and installation collection by Baltimore artist Giulia Piera Livi\, 1\,461 oil pastel on paper drawings by St. Louis artist Martin Brief\, and a group exhibition of work by artspace Artist Members\, entitled Decisions\, Decisions. Exhibition dates are September 27 – October 20\, 2019. An Opening Reception for the Artists will take place on Friday\, September 27\, 2019\, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. This event will be Free and Open to the Public. A closing talk by the artists will take place on Sunday\, October 20\, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. This event will also be Free and Open to the Public. \nPresented in the Main Gallery is Kim Rice’s mixed media installation\, Inheritance. Using common materials\, Rice creates large-scale works as a meditation on institutional racism and the policies that continue to affect American society today. Materials found around her home\, such as academic references\, photographs\, redlining maps\, court documents\, and furniture create a space where both the past and present reside. Her installations dismantle and reconstruct the dissonance we experience in our engagement with truth. Kim earned her BFA in Sculpture and MFA in Printmaking from the University of Oklahoma. Her work has been shown throughout the country including the Alexandria Museum of Art\, the Fred Jones Museum of Art\, the Northern Illinois Art Museum\, the Delaware Museum of Art\, the 22ndNo Dead Artists at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery\, and Prospect.4 Satellite. She has received multiple awards\, including the McNeese Grant for Socially Engaged Practice. Born in Kentucky\, raised in California\, educated in Oklahoma\, loved in New Orleans and now home in Baltimore\, Kim’s work is influenced by her two children and the pile of books by her bed. \nFeatured in the Helena Davis Gallery is Abstract Imagery\, oil paintings by Kathleen Craig. Kathleen says\, “Today\, I would like to develop my work in two directions – complexity and darkness – without losing sight of what I am already doing.” She loves the way each painting suggests not only a new direction\, but also seems to tell her to do it better next time. Her process starts with some loose\, expressive drawing keeping the basic tenets of composition in mind. When time allows\, she tries to reach a resolution of the whole painting in one go\, and then she revises and revises. Craig originally earned a living working as an editor. She didn’t get started as an artist until finally being persuaded to try a drawing class at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She soon found herself enamoured with all aspects of the art world. Shortly after moving to Virginia\, she swapped out her day job in order to dedicate herself to the practice and her children. Now\, with her children grown\, she can spend all her free time in her studio. \nIn the Frable Gallery\, Giulia Piera Livi presents Come Sit\, a painting & installation collection. Livi’s work focuses on the acute and the polite\, the domestic and the utilitarian. She works to understand how we find art objects to be aesthetically pleasing\, and how we choose to live among them. She interposes objects of the everyday to distort our sense of space\, explore our ability to inhabit rooms\, and merge the dreamlike with the rigid. Her geometric objects and paintings focus on materiality to investigate light\, form\, and the weirdly functional. Giulia earned a BFA from Penn State University and an MFA from the Mount Royal School at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). She has exhibited both nationally and internationally with recent solo shows at 13|U Art Windows\, VAE Gallery\, Arlington Arts Center\, and School 33 Art Center’s Project Space. Livi received an Individual Artist Grant from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2019 and the Trawick Young Artist Prize from the Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards in 2017. Currently\, she is a Gallery Manager at C. Grimaldis and an Adjunct Professor at MICA. Originally from Philadelphia\, she now lives and works in Baltimore. \nsmallspace Gallery features Hope (2017–2019)\, 1\,461 oil pastel on paper drawings by Martin Brief. Brief defines hope as “a thought process that removes us from this moment and clouds our ability to clearly see what is right in front of us.” These drawings allude to the idea that hope is accepting and appreciating the unknown future while still acting in the present. Each piece begins as a carefully executed drawing of the word “hope”. It is then smudged until the word is transformed. By physically reworking the oil pastel\, the drawing remains materially the same but visually different. Martin’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including exhibitions in New York\, Paris\, Zurich\, Washington\, D.C.\, Philadelphia\, Chicago\, and St. Louis. He also has work in several public collections\, including the Joan Flasch Artist Book Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago\, Center for Creative Photography in Tucson\, Arizona\, and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in Honolulu\, Hawaii. He recently received fellowships from the Howard Foundation and the MacDowell Colony. Brief was born and raised in Chicago and he currently lives and works in St. Louis where he is an Associate Professor at Saint Louis University. \nThe Suzanne Foley Gallery will show Decisions\, Decisions\, works in all media by artspace Artist Members. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Please contact the gallery administrator at artspaceorg@gmail.com\, or phone the gallery at 804-232-6464 for additional information. The gallery is located at Zero East 4th Street in Richmond\, Virginia 23224\, with a second door at 31 E. 3rd St.\, and online at www.artspacegallery.org. \n  Save

SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:Fall exhibits at Art Works open with Michelle McGrath’s Tension\, and three new solo shows. The Richmond Camera Club will have a group show and of course there’s the monthly All Media art show. It’s Art Works’ 16th anniversary so we’re planning to celebrate in sweet-sixteen style. Please join us September 27th\, 6 p.m. –9 p.m. for the opening reception\, refreshments\, live music and a gallery talk. The exhibits continue through October 19\, 2019. This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is provided in 3 lots close by. Look for our Art Works Event Flags. \nExhibits include: \nTension by Michelle McGrath \nMcGrath incorporates rough textures and vibrant\, high contrast colors in her paintings and mixed media works. She finds beauty and intrigue in the gnarled roots of a tree; the crumbling plaster on a wall; and the wrinkled\, roughened hands of her grandmother. To explore these types of surfaces\, her materials are distorted by twisting\, ripping\, and pulling the pieces apart. For instance\, canvas is layered and stitched together in an uneven manner\, with knots and lumps added to the distressed surface. She views these distorted\, strained surfaces as different forces in her life that push or pull her in varied directions. Her approach to compositions is playfully and intuitively\, letting them evolve\, during her process. \nThis exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nRandom Shots: Line\, Color\, Reflection by Jay Denny \nRichmond plays a regular role in Jay Denny’s creative work—from the ever-changing built environment\, the daily course of the James to the rich experience of community activity. All these contribute to an unending inventory of images. \nDenny says: \nDigital photography has given me many such opportunities. My camera’s small viewfinder has opened new worlds of objects\, shapes and color in many surprising ways. My hope is that the images in this show will allow you to appreciate what I have recorded: some of it familiar\, some foreign. \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, East. \nRemembering Bin: A Retrospective of Binford Harrell’s artwork. \nThis exhibit is a retrospective of Binford Harrell’s artwork. He was a well-loved\, active member of Art Works Gallery and the community. He painted and created mixed media artwork until his death in 2018. His artwork will be available for purchase in the gallery and online through our shopping website: www.shop4artwork.com. \nThis exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, West. \nWithin the Light by Robin Coker \nCoker says: A photographers’ world is essential to the light we take in and capture; so often we fail to see the beauty and signs of the world around us. Within the Light are the images that have captivated my life predominately in nature and other surrounding items in hope that it will be delightful to your likings also. This \nexhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \nRichmond Camera Club Exhibit \nThis group of talented photographers will exhibit their work in the Skylight Gallery. \nSEPTEMBER 2019 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Clio Newton: Venus
DESCRIPTION:New York\, NY – Clio Newton\, the 30-year-old American artist whose monumental figurative charcoal drawings have drawn the attention of museums and collectors in group shows at Forum Gallery and in the gallery’s art fair presentations\, will have her first major one-person exhibition in America at Forum Gallery\, New York\, from September 26 to November 9\, 2019. The nine drawings in the exhibition depict “gender composites” invented by Newton\, who composes her subjects from male bodies and female heads\, as did Botticelli\, Delacroix\, Michelangelo\, Titian and many artists of the Renaissance. While these masters used male bodies in response to the prudence and female subjugation of the time\, Newton creates fully contemporary portraits whose simultaneous maleness and femaleness are provocative and compelling in their reference to the gender fluidity of this era. \nWriting in the exhibition catalogue\, Eleanor Heartney observes\, “The moment of transition is imperceptible – in some works it appears to happen around the shoulders or neck\, in others we only become aware of the shift in genders in the arms and legs. Sometimes it is masked by masses of falling hair. Or it only becomes evident in the thickening of shoulders or the unexpected hairiness of chest or legs…these beautiful young people remain unaccountably disconcerting.” \nEach of Newton’s subjects\, then\, is a true composite of very real people. All are individual models\, friends and relatives\, exquisitely rendered with compressed charcoal to create interwoven lines and dark ebony masses that describe luminous skin\, shining eyes and luxurious tresses. And each subject is fully self-aware\, making each drawing uncannily convincing. While the drawings present no political agenda\, the subjects are powerful\, self-possessed\, proud and unapologetic. Ultimately\, they are attached to the realm of myth\, fantasy and archetype\, while they are at once real and not real. In summary\, Heartney states\, “they remind us that art is the realm of the imagination\, never more so than when it serves up a convincing illusion of reality.” \n\n\nClio Newton: Venus\, is on view from September 26 to November 9\, 2019. Clio Newton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at The Cooper Union in New York City and a Master of Fine Arts at Zürcher Hochschule der Kunste in Zürich\, Switzerland. She was awarded the AKKU Artist in Residency grant in Zurich\, and was selected as one of the top young artists in Europe by Artagon in Paris. \nClio Newton is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant Award and has exhibited her work in California\, Miami\, New England and New York as well as in Florence\, Italy; Munich\, Paris and Zürich. During the last year\, her work has been added to the collections of The Flint Institute\, MI; 21C Museum\, Louisville\, KY; and the Baltimore Museum of Art\, MD. \nClio Newton is represented by Forum Gallery. \nClio Newton: Venus opens with a reception for the artist on Thursday\, September 26\, 2019 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm\, and will be on view through Saturday\, November 9\, 2019. \n### \nForum Gallery is located at 475 Park Avenue at 57th Street\, New York\, NY 10022. Please visit forumgallery.com/exhibitions/clio-newton-venus to view the entire exhibition online. The exhibition begins on September 26\, 2019 and will be on view through November 9\, 2019. Forum Gallery is open Monday through Saturday\, 10am to 5:30pm. SUMMARY:Opening Reception | Cowgirls & the Western Plains
DESCRIPTION:Cowgirls and the Western Plains features the feminine side of the West as portrayed by the vibrant cowgirls of Donna Howell-Sickles and the softer\, more subtle aspects of the West in the luminous landscapes by Linda Lillegraven. Join these women for an Artists’ Reception on Wednesday\, September 25th from 5 to 7PM at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt. \n“Donna Howell-Sickles captures the can-do\, capable ranching women who exude an internal strength\, work-ethic\, and vibrant spirit as many of her foremothers did\, while Linda Lillegraven’s landscapes showcase the soft light and open spaces over which these women roam\,” shares gallery owner\, Ann Korologos. “The predecessors of the women Howell-Sickles paints are the same women that tamed the plains and open land so skillfully depicted in the landscapes of Lillegraven.” \nDonna Howell-Sickles redefines the wary stereotypes that represented Western women during her childhood in Texas and New Mexico in the 50s and 60s. Using charcoal\, pastel\, and acrylic on paper or canvas\, Donna portrays ranching women as she knew them—strong\, capable\, humorous and bonded as sisters. Her work is rich with symbolism and allusions to classical mythology that “fits the American West like a glove.” \nLinda Lillegraven lives in Laramie\, Wyoming\, and earned a BA in Art and BS in Zoology from San Diego State University. The great open landscapes of the West\, with their changing light and seasons\, offer Lillegraven a lifetime of inspiration. Her oil and pastel works capture the transitions of color and tone of the prairie\, so subtle as to be almost invisible\, yet masterfully achieved. Lillegraven includes a minimal amount of detail while simultaneously giving the viewer a sense of big skies\, open fields\, space and scale. \nCowgirls and the Western Plains is complimented with a selection of 40 contemporary western artists\, and is on view September 25th through October 24th\, 2019. For more information\, please visit the Ann Korologos Gallery at 211 Midland Avenue in Basalt\, call 970.927.9668 or email art@korologosgallery.com. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Ariel Cabrera Montejo Solo Exhibition: Second Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Cuba’s wars for independence –the fights against Spain that led to the American-Cuban-Spanish war in the late XIX and early XX Century- fueled Americans’ imaginations. As avid consumers of Cuban tobacco\, American tourists in Havana were lured by the idyllic scenes of war printed on the lids of tobacco boxes. These depicted the romance of mambises (Cuban soldiers) with beautiful guajiras (peasant women) posing in custom dresses\, promising an island full of opportunities for true love. Painters such as Frederick Remington and Winslow Homer travelled to the island at the time\, to capture the epic events in images that were not always realistic\, but rather their interpretations of the facts. Still\, their paintings were widely circulated\, ultimately serving the purposes of Roosevelt’s campaign for annexing Cuba. \nA century later\, artist Ariel Cabrera\, a Cuban now living in the U.S.\, ignites our imaginations yet again with new versions of history that may be as valid as those documented. In his paintings there are mambises and guajiras\, machetes and military formations as before\, and yet they take part of scenarios that we did not foresee. \nHis take is not judgmental – if anything\, it would be humorous and sarcastic. He is not focused on historical accuracy\, even though most of the characters in the paintings are inspired by real people and stories he came across in his research. On choosing the subject of the works\, he also states\, “sometimes what happened was less interesting than what did not happen.” \n  Save

SUMMARY:REPOPULATIONS
DESCRIPTION:NOoSPHERE Arts presents REPOPULATIONS\, a group exhibition and series of performances opening during Kingsland Wildflowers’ Fall Festival\, a Climate Week official event. Curated by Daniela Holban\, the show will feature works by 20+ artists. \nREPOPULATIONS examines the parallels between declining local natural habitats within the Greenpoint landscape: Native plant and wildlife alongside the artists’ populations have become depleted over time due to the neglect and contamination of their ecosystems by both industrial and property development. A commentary on a microcosm of a greater global crisis\, the exhibition addresses the importance and celebrates the repopulation efforts of these ecosystems in several ways – by presenting a selection of artists working in the area as well as showcasing artworks that comment on environmental themes. \nWith Works by: Jon Barraclough\, Marijke Brinkhof\, Juliet Jane\, Maki Kaoru\, Aomi Kikuchi\, Sol Kjok\, Tom Koken\, Sjaak Kooij\, Ofra Lapid\, Till Lauer\, Allison Maletz\, Julianne Nash\, Agata Nowicka\, Brian Rattiner\, Beau Bree Rhee\, Noam Shoan\, Asia Sztencel\, Adriano Valeri\, Ingvild Waerhaug\, Martynka Wawrzyniak\, Albin Wiberg\, Alex Wolkowicz and Gabriel Zimmer. \nSpecial multi-media performance with Ingvild Waerhaug on vocals and Art Baron on bass recorder & trombone on Sept.21st at 6:30PM.  \nThe exhibition is sponsored by Broadway Stages\, a generous arts patron whose support allows a multitude of displaced artists renewed access to the former manufacturing plants where the creative tribe once thrived. \nArtworks available for purchase on ARTFARE. SUMMARY:Fall Equinox
DESCRIPTION:In the exhibition\, Fall Equinox\, the 13 artists represented use their personal experiences and socio-political issues from their respective countries to reflect emotion to the viewer through a wide variety of mediums\, techniques\, and forms. The artists use their past to create in the present. Their life\, their religion\, their feelings\, their thoughts\, give life to beautifully and carefully constructed pieces that carve-out from the human soul what it means to struggle and encounter change. The artists focus on issues that revolve around identity\, religion\, immigration\, and humanity.  \nFurthermore\, the artists are serendipitously inspired by nature\, the phenomena of the physical world collectively. Therefore\, through a fusion of colors\, dynamic gestures\, contrasting mediums and surfaces\, and nature as each artist’s views it\, the works in Fall Equinox will allow any viewer to redefine for themselves what it means to be human in the world. The ultimate shared object of the works displayed in Fall Equinox is to transpire the importance of the present moment among the complexities of life.  \nFall Equinox opens on September 17\, 2019\, and will be on display until October 8\, 2019.  An opening reception will be held on Thursday\, September 19\, 2019\, from 6 PM – 8 PM. Entrance to the gallery is free and open to the public. \n  Save

SUMMARY:HUMA BHABHA | The Company
DESCRIPTION:HUMA BHABHA\nThe Company \nSeptember 19–December 14\, 2019\nOpening reception: Thursday\, September 19\, 6–8pm \n“There is so much physical destruction happening in different parts of the world\, to the extent that many functioning cities look like archeological digs. One of the ways I like to approach the past is in a cinematic way\, reimagining the past and projecting towards the future just as movies often do.”
—Huma Bhabha \nGagosian is pleased to present The Company\, new sculptures and drawings by Huma Bhabha. This is her first exhibition in Rome. \nIn expressive drawings on photographs as well as figurative sculptures carved from cork and Styrofoam\, assembled from refuse and clay\, or cast in bronze\, Bhabha probes the tensions between time\, memory\, and displacement. References to science-fiction\, archeological ruins\, Roman antiquities\, and postwar abstraction combine as she transforms the human figure into grimacing totems that are both unsettling and darkly humorous. \nThe Company is inspired in part by “The Lottery in Babylon” (1941)\, a short story by Jorge Luis Borges in which a fictional society is taken over by a pervasive lottery system that doles out both rewards and punishments. The lottery is purportedly run by the Company\, a secret\, perhaps nonexistent body determining peoples’ fates. Bhabha’s procession of sculptures makes visible the power of this unseen Company. It comprises a pair of large\, disembodied hands floating atop transparent plinths; a seated figure; and several standing figures of varying scale. Drawings on photographs echo these forms and characters\, which could have come from a distant realm of the future just as easily as from a lost civilization. The standing figures are carved from stacks of dark cork—which emits an earthy\, acrid odor—and its technical inverse\, Styrofoam. These materials appear to be hard and dense\, like eroded stone or freshly quarried marble\, but they are lightweight and soft\, allowing Bhabha to carve quickly and spontaneously without over-refining. The sculptural process thus becomes a sort of embodied stream of consciousness from which alien monsters\, fertility goddesses\, and Greek kouroi emerge. \nThe masklike visages of Bhabha’s sculptures are at once majestic and jarring. Painted in incongruous pastel tones—blue\, mauve\, pink\, and green—they recall graffiti\, where urban grime combines with interventions of glowing color. With their deranged\, cartoonish features empowered by a foreboding bipedalism\, Bhabha’s sculptures seem to both mock and warn as reflections of and witnesses to human pride and power\, veneration and iconoclasm. \nPairing the scars of war\, colonialism\, and trauma with allusions to current events and popular media\, Bhabha has long maintained that the world is an apocalypse\, both man-made and natural; her ravaged sculptures appear to have witnessed some measure of catastrophe yet survived to tell the tale. Like an enthroned pharaoh or cyborg caught in a shower of shrapnel\, a seated figure is assembled from sallow clay pressed into chicken wire\, mottled fragments of Styrofoam\, toy dog bones\, and rusted chairs from Bhabha’s hometown of Karachi\, caught in the crossfire of internecine and international conflict. \nIn Bhabha’s large drawings\, human and nonhuman figures occupy the intersection of photography\, collage\, and painterly gesture—their composite faces and shadowy forms seeming to haunt landscapes\, city streets\, and architectural settings. In one\, a blue and beige arch is imposed on Bhabha’s own photograph of an ancient dog statue in Rome’s Musei Capitolini\, with two white kouroi looming in the background. \nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome will host a conversation between Bhabha and Cristiana Perrella\, director of the Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato\, on September 18 at 6pm. The event will be held in English and open to the public. \n\nImage credit: \nHUMA BHABHA\nBeyond the River\, 2019\nCork\, styrofoam\, rebar\, wood\, acrylic\, oil stick\n103 x 37 x 30 inches\n261.6 x 94 x 76.2 cm\n© Huma Bhabha\nPhoto: Rob McKeever\nCourtesy the Artist and Gagosian \n  Save

SUMMARY:Some Ten Odd Years by Josh Dorman
DESCRIPTION:SOME TEN ODD YEARS \nAn Exhibition of Drawings and Paintings by SACI alumnus\, Josh Dorman. \n  \nStop by the Opening Reception! \nWhen: September 19\, 2019 @ 6:00pm \nWhere: 454 W 19th Street\, New York\, NY 10011 \n  \nWe are excited to present this SACI Study Abroad Alumnus’ most recent opere a collection of 11 paintings and 3 drawings entitled Some Ten Odd Years Ago. \nJosh Dorman’s work focuses on themes regarding the passing of time and how an object’s meaning is altered over time. Dorman’s work skirts the line between a technically realist practice in conflict with an almost surrealistic flavor. Artists that appear to be direct influences are Hieronymus Bosch for the obvious correlations with the scale and nuanced intricacies\, as well as surrealistic Dali and De Chirico and those of the futurists era. \nA body of work that is well grounded in past movements\, paying tribute to them\, while still aiming at creating something new and worthwhile all the same. It bears a compelling weight in terms of depth in terms of legibly micro-narratives\, recalling similarities between his work and that of European or Chinese tapestry and Russian iconographic representation. A diverse range of emotional investment can be garnered between the micro and the macro interpretations of his pieces. \nJosh Dorman (b. 1966) grew up in Baltimore in 1966 before studying at Skidmore College for his BA and then Queen’s College for his MFA. His recent exhibitions include John Martin Gallery\, One New York Plaze\, Ryan Lee Gallery and Koplin Del Rio Gallery. His artwork is in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art Museum\, The Boca Raton Museum of Art\, The Butler Institute of American Art\, The Springfield Museum and The Naples Museum. \n  \nTo learn more about this exhibition\, click here. \nTo learn more about he artist\, click here. \n  \nMAKE SURE TO RSVP! SUMMARY:Helwaser Gallery at EXPO CHICAGO
DESCRIPTION:Helwaser Gallery at Expo Chicago\nBooth 270\n09.19.2019 – 09.22.2019\nWorks by: Alexander Calder\, John Chamberlain\, Jean Dubuffet\, George Condo\, Michael Goldberg\, Adolph Gottlieb\, Hans Hofmann\, John Wesley\, Ed Ruscha\, Richard Serra\, Sol LeWitt\, Tom Wesselmann\, Jonas Wood\nSpecial presentation: Anton Ginzburg \nThe gallery will be hosting an online viewing room for Expo Chicago\, where you can explore and learn more about the booth’s presentation. \nFor more information on available works\, passes\, and general inquiries\, email us  \nHelwaser Gallery is pleased to participate in Expo Chicago from September 19-22 (Booth 270). The booth will highlight works by post-war and contemporary masters\, including Alexander Calder\, John Chamberlain\, Jean Dubuffet\, George Condo\, Michael Goldberg\, Adolph Gottlieb\, Hans Hofmann\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kenneth Noland\, Ed Ruscha\, Sol LeWitt\, Tom Wesselmann\, John Wesley\, and Jonas Wood. Complementing this presentation will be a dedicated section to New York-based artist Anton Ginzburg (b. 1974\, St. Petersburg\, Russia)\, whose works dialogue with modernist formal vocabularies. Marking Helwaser Gallery’s first year of participation in Expo Chicago\, the presentation will introduce the gallery’s overall program to the various audiences of the fair. \nExecuted on shaped wooden panels\, Ginzburg’s abstract\, dynamic compositions balance hard-edged geometry with painterly qualities. Ginzburg’s works have been the subject of significant solo exhibitions at the 54th Venice Biennale\, the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston\, and the Southern Albert Art Gallery\, amongst others. His latest bodies of works address the color experiments of Mikhail Matyushin\, a leading figure of the Russian historical avant-garde. In the ORRA (2017- 2018) and VIEW (2018 – ongoing) series of paintings\, planes of color overlap and intersect with each other within smaller-scale works\, revealing figure-ground relationships. In larger works\, Ginzburg draws on the effects of the movement of color through space. Collectively\, the works analyse the act of viewing and demonstrates the process through the material practice of painting. \nThis focus on abstraction will continue in the main section of the booth with three large-scale paintings by Adolph Gottlieb\, Hans Hofmann\, and Kenneth Noland. Gottlieb’s monumental Black on White (1967) suspends gestural\, emotionally charged brushstrokes within a pure white color field. Hofmann’s Composition #2 (1951) is an arrangment of multiple elements within a bright yellow background\, underscoring the importance of color and form in his practice. Also on view is Noland’s Mysteries: Wild Heart (2000)\, which revisits the artist’s landmark series of concentric circle landscapes that was conceived in the 1960s\, with heightened\, dramatic color relationships. Presented together\, the works explore the various approaches that the painters took towards abstraction and their respective contributions as pioneers of the seminal art historical movements\, Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. \nAlso exhibited will be a selection of work on paper by George Condo\, Ed Ruscha\, John Welsey\, Sol LeWitt\, and Jonas Wood. These drawings allow viewers to encounter the respective artists’ practice on a more intimate scale. \n  Save

How many of the challenges that she faced in the early 20th century are still experienced by women in management positions today? \nJoin us for an interdisciplinary panel discussion on Wednesday\, September 18th at 6 pm in the Dolan School of Business led by Curator of Education Michelle DiMarzo\, Dr. Catherine C. Giapponi (Associate Professor of Management)\, and Dr. Elizabeth Hohl (Assistant Professor of the Practice of the History Department). A reception will precede the event at 5 pm\, generously supported by the Travelers Insurance Company. \nThis lecture is presented in conjunction with Hildreth Meière: The Art of Commerce located in the museum’s Bellarmine Hall Galleries\, which is on view through September 21\, 2019.   \nImage: “Hildreth Meière in Berlin\,” n.d. SUMMARY:Women of Abstraction
DESCRIPTION:Tinney Contemporary is pleased to present\, “Women of Abstraction”\, a group exhibition of new works by artists Mary Long\, Martica Griffin\, Carol Mode\, Sisavanh Phouthavong\, Mildred Jarrett\, and Jeanie Gooden. In their latest exhibition\, Tinney Contemporary aims to celebrate the complexities of abstraction. In not only its physical manifestation; but through its meaning\, history\, and energy\, as well as\, the artists who create it through their own unique lenses. \nAs a result of the lasting appeal of the Abstraction Movement\, there is now an increased desire to uncover and recognize the women of the many periods of Abstraction throughout history. Vanguards like Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler — who’s groundbreaking work was largely misunderstood — have paved the way for the abstract artists of the past century. In 2019\, being an abstract painter holds a highly dynamic and diverse set of meanings— especially when compared to the pioneers in the previous century. Each artist approaches material\, shape\, color\, and space in ways that uniquely reflect their own cultivated experiences and ideas. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Nathaniel Mary Quinn | Hollow and Cut
DESCRIPTION:NATHANIEL MARY QUINN\nHollow and Cut \nSeptember 11–October 19\, 2019\nOpening reception: Wednesday\, September 11\, 6–8pm \n“Confronting insecurities and fears\, embracing shortcomings\, and contending with the burden of one’s own identity and truth are of paramount importance for becoming more concretely formed. My current studio practice maintains this endeavor: cutting through\, digging out\, excavating\, laying bare wounds—past and present\, temporary and permanent—on the surfaces of paper and canvas.”
\n—Nathaniel Mary Quinn \nGagosian is pleased to present Hollow and Cut\, new paintings and works on paper by Nathaniel Mary Quinn. This is his first exhibition with the gallery. \nQuinn’s composite portraits probe the relationship between perception and memory. He rejects the notion of documentary portraiture; instead of depicting physical likeness\, he illuminates subconscious aspects of the human psyche\, coaxing forth manifestations of innate and repressed emotions. \nWhile Quinn’s portraits might resemble collages\, they are actually rendered by hand with oil paint\, charcoal\, gouache\, oil stick\, pastels\, and gold leaf. He begins with a vision—a vague flash of a face from his past—that he feels viscerally compelled to translate into reality. To do so\, he collects images from fashion magazines\, newspapers\, advertising\, and comics\, reconceptualizing the snippets as purely aesthetic imagery before methodically redrawing and repainting each one. In an impulse akin to the parlor game cadavre exquis\, Quinn covers parts of his own composition with construction paper as he goes\, so that no existing section influences the appearance of the next. Only when the work is complete does he remove the paper—revealing a visually disjointed yet psychologically unified portrait or figure whose genesis echoes the extemporaneity of human memory. \nOn view will be a number of Quinn’s “enhanced performance” drawings: 12-by-9-inch charcoal-on-paper works created simultaneously with both hands and “enhanced” with colorful swipes and swaths of gouache and soft pastels. For the ambidextrous Quinn\, the technique behind these works is a full-body performance in itself that expands upon his already spontaneous act of rendering visions—yet the end result is surprisingly representational. Depicting complete faces rather than patchwork body parts\, these haunting portraits slip in and out of focus through a murky haze of black charcoal. \nHollow and Cut will also feature new paintings\, including Quinn’s second ever horizontal diptych\, Jekyll and Hyde (2019)\, in which he dramatizes the process of visual fragmentation and reassembly by painting each half of the subject’s head separately before joining the two canvases. The strips of bare linen around the edges of each painting also emphasize this three-dimensionality and physicality. Using further perspectival sleight of hand\, Quinn then paints the newly constricted edges of the work in a darker\, shadowlike gradient\, as if framing his portraits through an inset window. Confined within the world of the canvas\, his swirling\, distorted faces gaze out at us with raw emotion\, baring their psychic vulnerabilities. \n\nImage credit: \nNATHANIEL MARY QUINN\nC’mo’ And Walk With Me\, 2019\nBlack charcoal\, gouache\, soft pastel\, oil pastel on Coventry Vellum Paper\n50 x 38 in\n127 x 96.5 cm\n© Nathaniel Mary Quinn\nPhoto: Rob McKeever\nCourtesy Gagosian \n  Save
