SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Photography Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:These Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nWe all have a story to tell\, a legacy or statement\, a call to action\, a declaration of what you believe\, what makes you mad or happy\, your unique observations of the world around you\, your life itself with its peaks and valleys. The medium of photography makes it possible to tell your story and sometimes make a change. A picture tells a thousand words. Several pictures correctly sequenced tell a full story – your individual story. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the art of telling a story through creating a visual narrative. Multiple images have the power of expressing thoughts\, ideas\, experiences and beliefs in a linear format. Storyboarding and careful sequencing of photographs following a clear concept\, your unique voice and communications to the outside world\, using many case studies and background information on the starting point of any project: The Why\, What\, Who\, and How. \nWe all have a unique story to share with others\, it can be a powerful and quiet voice\, but we have a responsibility to tell our stories as part of our background\, culture\, legacy and circumstances. The power of words through titles or series’ names are also explored\, rounding up to a full story. \n\n\n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:In Dialogue: Smithsonian Objects and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Heighten your civic awareness through conversations about art\, history and material culture. Each month\, educators from the National Portrait Gallery will partner with colleagues from across the Smithsonian to discuss how historical objects from their respective collections speak to today’s social justice issues. How can the desire for cultural recognition spark activism? Together with our co-hosts from the National Museum of the American Indian\, we will explore questions of identity and assimilation in relation to a portrait of activist Zitkála-Šá (Yankton Sioux)\, also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin\, an outspoken critic of Indian boarding schools\, and a 19thcentury Carlisle Indian Industrial School student uniform. Free—Registration required. \nImage Credit: “Zitkála-Šá” by Joseph Turner Keiley\, glycerine-developed platinum print\, 1898. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Silvana Soriano: Ipsis Litteris
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of Ipsis Litteris\, an exhibition featuring collages by Brasilian artist Silvana Soriano.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis month at the gallery\, Brasilian visual artist Silvana Soriano explores takes the medium of visual art and transcends language in her representations of idioms\, metaphors\, sayings and stories by presenting them as literal as can be\, playing with the mixtures of cultures and narratives given through words. . \n  \nThe exhibition\, which carries the same name as Soriano’s series\, interrogates the boundaries of the cultural and visual qualities of history\, aesthetics\, and humor—because fine art and adventure aren’t mutually exclusive. Ipsis Litteris translates to “word for word\,” as a play on the pieces’ quite literal portrayal of their meaning. \n  \nThis portrayal carries through in pieces like Wear Another Shoes (pictured)\, named for the English phrase “to put yourself in someone else’s shoes” displayed in the literal sense via its humorous imagery\, until the realization that even the character is pondering how they feel about the shoes in their show of emotion. The thought that even the character themselves debates this gendered contraction between the heels and shoes brings forth yet another layer to the discussion\, from what normally seems as light-hearted a piece as the next. \n  \nCurated by Gabriel Torres. \n\n\n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Zoom Talk with Art Historian Sarah Burns at Smithsonian\, Washington\, D.C.
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sarah Burns\, Ruth N. Halls Professor Emerita\, Art History\, Indiana University \nBorn on a hardscrabble Nebraska farm\, artist Perkins Harnly crossed paths with legendary celebrities and colorful characters while visiting famous graveyards\, winning prizes at drag balls and toiling in an upscale Los Angeles cafeteria. From the 1930s on\, Harnly produced paintings of exuberantly overstuffed Victorian rooms embedded with sly jokes alluding to his own queer selfhood. Looking through the lenses of Harnly’s life and art\, this talk considers the role of the Victorian interior as metaphorical closet that served as a refuge from the judgment and dangers of the outside world. Free—Registration required. \nKate Clarke Lemay\, Portrait Gallery acting senior historian\, will moderate the Q&A. This program is a part of the Tommie L. SUMMARY:Dario Robleto: The Aorta of an Archivist
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Healing\, Knowing\, Seeing the Body\, the Spencer Museum of Art commissioned Houston-based artist Dario Robleto to create a new work of art. The Aorta of an Archivist is an immersive film and sound installation that connects Robleto’s research on the cosmos\, the human heart\, and the history of recording our bodies. In this talk\, Robleto takes us through his research and process\, to the boundaries of outer and inner space\, and across thresholds once believed impassable to question where our observational limits lie. \nTo view The Aorta of an Archivist or Healing\, Knowing\, Seeing the Body\, make a reservation to visit the galleries. You can also explore the virtual version of Healing\, Knowing\, Seeing the Body on our website. This event includes live closed captions in English. \nImage: Dario Robleto\, The Aorta of an Archivist (detail)\, 2020–2021\, UHD video\, 5.1 surround sound installation\, IA2021.002 \n  Save

SUMMARY:March - April Exhibits @ Art Works
DESCRIPTION:The exhibits continue through April 17\, 2021. Admission is free and open to the public. \nThe Things We Say When We Break the Line\nby Inge Strack and Danny Trent \nInge Strack is a German born\, full-time painter living and working in Richmond\, Virginia. Her abstract paintings consist of bold colors and a deep sense of emotion. She often paints with a limited palette\, focusing on brushstrokes\, texture\, and form to find a balance. She is drawn to the drama and the pain connecting humanity and she strives to create beauty out of the most difficult circumstances. Her work combines her European past and her American present. Her paintings are upbeat and symbolize the strength and positive attitude that are part of the American spirit and therefore part of her newfound life in the United States. Her passion for bold colors comes from a group of artists called “The Blue Rider” of the 1920s\, especially Franz Marc; other influences are American artists Mark Rothko and Wolf Kahn. \nDanny Trent is an abstract painter. He uses the basic elements of painting: line\, color\, texture\, form\, and space in creating his painting.\nHe says that painting is an intuitive approach that allows for him to be open for unexpected moments of seeing something that was not intended and expanding and incorporating this discovery into the painting. \nAn Uncolored Point of View by Perry Matthews \nAn Uncolored Point of View explores the myriad features of manipulated black and white photography. The focus conveys boldness as well as subtlety. Viewers can view\, compare\, and develop their own interpretations. Perry first began experimenting with a point and shoot digital camera 10 years ago. Her photographic journey has encompassed nature\, objects\, and architecture. Her passion resides in abstractions and how everyday objects and architectural details can be transformed into intriguing\, illuminative works of art. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery \nThe Art of Nature by James Sheehan \nJames Sheehan uses natural woods to create either abstract or portrait wall art. The various grains\, patterns\, and colors of wood provides James with “brush strokes” provided by nature. He has worked with laminates and wood veneers for 40 years in the kitchen cabinet business. Now he uses that knowledge and skills to create art. \nThe exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \nRECYCLE ME ALL MEDIA SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. The theme for this month is recycled art. Call for entries is March 1\, 2021 – March 17\, 2021. Submit your entries through our online form. In partnership with independent mixologists\, crafters\, artists\, and experts in a variety of fields\, Wind Down Wednesday offers an optimistic approach to the middle of the week. \n\n\n\n\n\nFirst ladies are often expected to be role models\, hostesses and celebrities. SUMMARY:Viola Frey: The Space Just Between: Sculpture and Works on Paper 1970 - 1989
DESCRIPTION:GAVLAK is pleased to present Viola Frey: The Space Just Between: Sculpture and Works on Paper 1970 – 1989\, a showcase of the astonishing range of an artist best known for her vibrant\, monumental figures in clay. Frey’s solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1984 established her national reputation as an artist and activated a whirlwind of collectors eager to acquire her brilliant ceramic sentinels. This exhibition facilitates a broad view of Frey’s artistic output as a gesamtkunstwerk in which works on paper\, both monumentally- and modestly-scaled ceramics\, and a lesser known work in bronze are mutually informative of one another. This presentation marks GAVLAK’s first in a series of gallery exhibitions showcasing Frey’s extensive oeuvre. Viola Frey: The Space Just Between: Sculpture and Works on Paper 1970 – 1989 opens on March 24th and will be on view through April 18th. \n  Save

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Mapping Narratives: New Prints 2021/Winter\, join us for the second and last round of live talks with exhibiting artists Scout Cartagena\, Yelaine Rodriguez\, and Robbie Sugg.  \nHear how Cartagena explores the surreal and shifting nature of personal memory and uses reflection as a metaphor; how Rodriguez engages with history and the rich religious traditions of Dominican and Haitian African diasporic communities; and how Sugg transforms overlooked “non-places” in the built environment into sites for critique.  \nThe talks will be moderated by Jenn Bratovich\, IPCNY’s Exhibition and Curatorial Manager. This Zoom webinar is free and open to the public. Live captioning will be available. The event will also be recorded and made available online. Feel free to send questions in advance to contact@ipcny.org. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Nature’s Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 23rd\, at 5 p.m. Douglas Tallamy\, Professor of Entomology at University of Delaware\, will give a virtual lecture. Dr. Douglas Tallamy will give a virtual lecture titled “Nature’s Best Hope”\, which is the title of his best-selling book about a new approach to conservation which starts in your backyard. Homeowners everywhere can turn their yards into conservation corridors that provide wildlife habitats. Because this approach relies on the initiatives of private individuals\, it is immune from the whims of government policy. Even more important\, it’s practical\, effective\, and easy—you will walk away with specific suggestions you can incorporate into your own yard. \nThis event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks. Learn more about the exhibition here. \nPresented in partnership with the Department of Biology. The Pequot Library\, Southport\, Connecticut Audubon Society-Fairfield Region\, and the Greenwich Audubon Center are community partners for this exhibition and its related programming. \n  \nLearn more about the event and how to watch on Eventbrite. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Tissue Memory
DESCRIPTION:School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Tissue Memory\,” a juried exhibition of multidisciplinary works by SVA students. Organized by SVA Galleries\, the exhibition will be on view online from Tuesday\, March 23\, through Monday\, April 12\, at galleries.sva.edu. \n  \nThe body is a repository for experience. Tissue memory refers to the theory that the elements of our bodies themselves could store memories of trauma and emotions that otherwise go unprocessed—the things that our minds are unable or unwilling to fully grasp. The artists in this exhibition use the body’s presence\, absence or surrogate in the same way. From the skin’s surface to the artist’s gesture\, this work examines what otherwise remains hidden from our consciousness. Longing\, trauma\, anger and the deeply hidden corporeality of our own bodies are revealed by tissue memory. \n  \nArtists featured in this exhibition are Annie Chen Ziyao (MFA Photography\, Video and Related Media)\, Ryan Cosbert (BFA Fine Arts)\, Maho Donowaki (MFA Fine Arts)\, Jingyi Gao (MFA Photography\, Video and Related Media)\, Lanyi Gao (BFA Fine Arts)\, Iveyology/Alena Ivey (BFA Fine Arts)\, Shelley Lake (MFA Art Practice)\, Seungheon Lee (BFA Fine Arts)\, Xinyi Liu (MFA Fine Arts) and Julia Lopac (BFA Illustration). \nImage credit: Julia Lopac\, The Breaking Point of Perfectionism\, 2019\, pen\, 40 x 30 inches. \n\n\n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Paul Cocksedge: Performance
DESCRIPTION:Friedman Benda is pleased to present British designer Paul Cocksedge’s fourth solo show with the gallery entitled Performance. The exhibition explores the processes of craft with three bodies of work that capture and express their theatricality in material form: Performance\, Push and Excavation. Examining the relationship between maker and audience\, and the idea of the outsider watching the craftsperson at work\, each series is a vehicle for storytelling\, drawing inspiration from and abstracting the physical process of making. \nThe Performance series follows the centuries-old technique of glassblowing\, one that Cocksedge has been interested in for over a decade. For this series\, Cocksedge synthesized the finished blown glass objects and the tools and materials used in this process to create his final works. Cherry wood molds have been shaped and finished using CNC-cutting\, and molten glass blown into them to create a singular glass object. Rather than discarding the blackened and burnt wood after use\, it has been rotated\, moved\, twisted\, cut up and reassembled like a puzzle\, and transformed into a piece of furniture that sits beneath the suspended glass object. For one table\, Cocksedge sliced metal to create infinite possible variations similar to a digital code\, with the result reminiscent of a canvas filled with lines and forms\, that the viewer is left to decode. \nThe Push series brings giant blocks of concrete together with sheets of metal\, curled up like large paper quills and inserted into the blocks where they unfurl and lock into place. These large-scale sculptural seating works explore the tension between the two materials through the cantilever and the drastic contrast between the two materials. \nThis exhibition also presents Excavation\, the follow-up to Cocksedge’s acclaimed Excavation: Evicted series\, which saw him turn concrete cores mined from beneath his studio into pieces of furniture. For Excavation\, the designer collected cores drilled from around the country by essential workers during lockdown\, which were used to blow glass to create a suspended lighting fixture to accompany the piece.  As such\, the process is a kind of record of the pandemic\, capturing a moment in time. “They’re not just any random block of concrete\, they’re part of a moment in time when the world felt upside down\,” says Cocksedge. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI’ve spent years watching glassblowers\, and feeling like an observer seeing a performer. I wanted to express the relationship between maker and audience with this body of work\, and close the distance between the two. It’s about capturing the physicality of the making – the heat\, the marks\, the smell and the burning. Usually\, the pristine end product is the focus\, but I wanted to bring the rawness of the actual process to the forefront. \n  Save
