Walker share the main gallery space by exhibiting on different dates.\nJoin us on May 28th\, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the 4th Friday art shows and reception featuring Henrico High and again on June 4th\, 6 p.m. – 9p.m. for the Maggie Walker School art show and reception. Parking is free.\nPlease wear a facemask and register online to attend so that we may control the number of people in the gallery.\n________________________________________\nHENRICO CENTER FOR THE ARTS SENIOR SHOW \nMary Scurlock guides her students through the many facets of art and the culmination of this work is the senior show at Art Works. The opening reception is May 28th from 6-8 p.m. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery May 28th through May 31\,2021. \n________________________________________ \nMAGGIE L. WALKER GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL SENIOR ART EXHIBITION \nJeff Hall provides the inspiration and guidance for the visual art students at Maggie L. Walker where he supports a broad range of experiences in both two and three dimensions and a wide variety of media. The students present their work at a reception on June 4th 6 pm – 9 pm. The show continues through June 12\, 2021. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n________________________________________\nShort Stories by Amy Burczyk \nAmy Burczyk says\, “I am a kid\, Mother\, Grandmother\, Artist\, Interior Designer (in that order). With a degree in Interior Design and an “almost” degree in Fine Arts from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee Wisconsin. I ran away to Wonderland\, fell down a rabbit hole and ended up in Lynchburg Virginia. My art reflects my approach to life: a childlike sense of wonder\, what if and defense. I use whimsey – animals\, rhymes\, songs\, and nonsense to cope with ‘adult’ issues\, much the way children have for centuries. My art may not match your sofa\, but I hope it makes you think and entertains.”\nThe exhibit is in the Centre Gallery. \n________________________________________\nNon-Objective Illusions in Black: Is black a color? by Dan Thompson \nDan Thompson was a musician for most of his life. He now channels that energy into his paintings. His new work departs from his previous style and he presents a different vision. Wait and see! The exhibit is in the Skylight Gallery. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Tulu Bayar: "Traces"
DESCRIPTION:Amos Eno Gallery proudly presents “Traces\,” an exhibition of a mixed-media installation by Tulu Bayar. Join us Friday\, May 21st from 6-8pm to encounter Bayar’s most recent installation\, which draws upon her decade-long exploration of drawing with photographic film\, and utilizes meditative repetition to communicate the idea of oneness: all binary concepts share and are connected to one source. In contrast to an examination of the physical\, Bayar’s work focuses on the spiritual essence of wholeness and mysticism that are deeply rooted in Rumi’s teachings. The artist will be creating ephemeral work for visitors during the opening\, in call and response with Pianist Sezi Seskir\, who will be playing ‘Two Pages’ by Philip Glass\, an early work of his from 1968. Please join us for this unique\, collaborative performance experience. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Discovering Your Creative Photographic Path Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:Remote learning \nThese Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nMost beginning photographers tend to randomly capture images of everything they see and experience\, resulting in confusing portfolios of single photographs and a lack of strong intellectual and aesthetical bodies of work. This intensive 3-weeks workshop is designed to encourage all students to find their unique creative voices\, resulting in solid directions for the future and applicable projects for everyone regardless of experience. \nCreative photography is a process\, one that utilizes a simple approach to establishing photography projects\, otherwise known as concepts. Four keywords\, WHY\, WHAT\, HOW and WHO serve as the foundation in forming intellectually and aesthetically resolved bodies of fine artwork. Finding your own creative voice is the result of applying this simple method to your photography projects\, not an elusive born talent\, but rather a process that involves writing simple artist statements\, researching a particular subject matter or techniques and experimenting with the aesthetics of an idea\, your idea. After an initial review of images\, each student will be encouraged to pursue a single idea or project\, resulting in a fully resolved mini body of work by the end of the workshop. Sequencing of images\, simple artist statements and presentation ideas will be explored throughout. \n \n  Save

SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Photography Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:These Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nWe all have a story to tell\, a legacy or statement\, a call to action\, a declaration of what you believe\, what makes you mad or happy\, your unique observations of the world around you\, your life itself with its peaks and valleys. The medium of photography makes it possible to tell your story and sometimes make a change. A picture tells a thousand words. Several pictures correctly sequenced tell a full story – your individual story. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the art of telling a story through creating a visual narrative. Multiple images have the power of expressing thoughts\, ideas\, experiences and beliefs in a linear format. Storyboarding and careful sequencing of photographs following a clear concept\, your unique voice and communications to the outside world\, using many case studies and background information on the starting point of any project: The Why\, What\, Who\, and How. \nWe all have a unique story to share with others\, it can be a powerful and quiet voice\, but we have a responsibility to tell our stories as part of our background\, culture\, legacy and circumstances. The power of words through titles or series’ names are also explored\, rounding up to a full story. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Enduring Images: Enslaved People and Photography in the Antebellum South
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Matthew Fox-Amato\, Assistant Professor of History\, University of Idaho \n\n\nFrom the 1840s to the end of the Civil War\, some enslaved people paid to have their photographs taken and then used these portraits to shape their identities and social ties. Slave narratives\, newspapers and studio records reveal that some enslaved individuals bought images from local photographers\, stowed images of sold family members in their cabins and carried images of family on their persons. Considering enslaved people as active agents of early photography\, this talk examines what their photographic practices meant\, especially in relation to the violent disruptions of the domestic slave trade. It also reflects upon possibilities for writing the history of portraiture when the relevant images are not available. Free—Registration required. \n\n\nKate Clarke Lemay\, Portrait Gallery acting senior historian\, will moderate the Q&A. This program is a part of the Greenberg Steinhauser Forum in American Portraiture and is hosted by PORTAL\, the Portrait Gallery’s Scholarly Center. \nImage Credit: Image courtesy of Matthew Fox-Amato \n\n  Save

SUMMARY:browngrotta arts presents Adaptation: Artists Respond to Change
DESCRIPTION:James Bassler My Letterman Yantra\, 2012\, photo by Tom Grotta \n\nbrowngrotta arts is pleased to announce their Spring 2021 “Art in the Barn” exhibition\, Adaptation: Artists Respond to Change. The exhibition looks at the myriad ways artists change direction or their practice in response to changed circumstances like a move\, a health issue\, a shift in personal circumstances\, or\, more recently\, a global pandemic. \n“Over the last year\, by necessity\, we’ve grown more introspective\, more insular and more aware of our interconnectedness\,” note the exhibition’s curators\, Tom Grotta and Rhonda Brown. “We’ve had to acknowledge our permeable national boundaries\, shared air\, the limits of personal space.” \nThe artists who work with browngrotta arts have coped with the changes the pandemic has wrought in various ways — moving locations\, taking up art photography\, taking new inspiration from nature. Their responses were the impetus for the theme the gallery will explore in the exhibition but these recent adaptations reflect just some of the many reasons artists make changes in their art practice. \nAdaptation: Artists Respond to Change also explores situations such as when a material becomes unavailable (willow) or a new one suggests itself (fiber optic\, bronze\, copper\, steel\, kibisio\, akebia)\, a move in the US from the East to the South or from one country to another or from the city to the desert\, a change in physical abilities (allergy\, injury)\, an altered personal relationship\, or a commission opportunity or an exhibition challenge. \nFor Yasuhisa Kohyama\, for example\, it was a natural disaster that led to a new artistic approach. In 1982\, he lost his kiln to heavy rains. As a result\, he changed his sculpture from Japanese traditional shapes to sculpted works made from large blocks of Shigaraki clay. \nIrina Kolesnikova found her work changing in response to this year’s events when travel and trips to museums and galleries came to an end. “Suddenly\, life was put on pause\, our social circle reduced to the size of our immediate environment\,” she says. “In these circumstances\, I felt a need to dive deeper into myself to realize the direction in which I should act and work.” The result was a series of small works\, Letters from Quarantine in which small handwritten fragments are layered or mixed with scraps of printed texts and with large letters or numbers created with a brush. \nSara Brennan and Keiji Nio found images from nature influencing their work as they were forced to remain indoors. Trees that Brennan had driven by each day on her former commute appeared in her work. Nio found images of brightly colored plants an inspiration\, transforming them into brightly colored fabric tapes from which he braids three-dimensional forms. Polly Sutton took a short detour\, the result of not being in the woods gathering and not thinking about showing work led her to explore some new ideas involving lashing new materials onto the cedar she customarily uses. Adaptation will include two of the baskets that resulted. They are truly period pieces\, reflecting a specific time. Sutton says that now\, “I am more centered so am back to more intentional work with rusted cedar.” \nFor Ane Henriksen\, change resulted from a move from the countryside to the city. Relocated to Copenhagen\, she found and gathered loads of lost gloves and mittens along the cycle paths. The work that resulted paralleled her personal transition to city dweller. “From this poetic waste material – a kind of urban fall – new growths can arise\,” Henriksen observes. In her piece for Adaptation\, she makes gloves float between threads resulting in a kind of Urban Growth. \nArtists include Adela Akers (US)\, Polly Barton (US)\, James Bassler (US)\, Zofia Butrymowicz (Poland)\, Sara Brennan (UK)\, Pat Campbell (US)\, Włodzimierz Cygan (Poland)\, Neha Puri Dhir (India)\, Paul Furneaux (UK)\, John Garrett (US)\, Ane Henriksen (Denmark)\, Kazue Honma (Japan)\, Tim Johnson (UK)\, Lewis Knauss (US)\, Nancy Koenigsberg (US)\, Yasuhisa Kohyama  (Japan)\, Irina Kolesnikova (Russia/Germany)\, Lawrence LaBianca (US)\, Gyöngy Laky (US)\, Sue Lawty (UK)\, Jennifer Falck Linssen (US)\, Federica Luzzi (Italy)\, Rachel Max (UK)\, John McQueen (US)\, Mary Merkel-Hess (US)\, Norma Minkowitz (US)\, Laura Foster Nicholson (US)\, Keiji Nio (Japan)\, Gudrun Pagter (Denmark)\, Eduardo Portillo & Mariá Eugenia Dávila (Venezuela)\, Mariette Rousseau-Vermette (Canada)\, Heidrun Schimmel (Germany)\, Hisako Sekijima (Japan)\, Naoko Serino (Japan)\, Karyl Sisson (US)\, Jin-Sook So (Korea/Sweden)\, Polly Sutton (US)\, Noriko Takamiya (Japan)\, Chiyoko Tanaka (Japan)\, Blair Tate (US)\, Wendy Wahl (US)\, Gizella K Warburton (UK)\, Grethe Wittrock (Denmark)\, Carolina Yrarrázaval (Chile). \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalog #51 of the same title. \nbrowngrotta arts is located at 276 Ridgefield Rd\, Wilton\, CT\nOpening: Saturday\, May 8\, 1pm – 6pm\nExhibition Hours: May 9-16\, 10am – 5pm daily\nFor reservations click here\nVisit www.browngrotta.com \nAdvanced time reservations are mandatory. To ensure the well-being of all visitors and staff\, there will be a maximum capacity of 15 visitors per time slot. Surfaces will be disinfected between reservations. Masks will be required.\n\nFor all media inquiries\, contact State Public Relations at (646) 714 – 2520 or browngrotta@statepr.com. \n\nAbout browngrotta arts\nFor over 30 years\, browngrotta arts has been advancing the field of contemporary fiber arts by curating and exhibiting renowned contemporary artists who celebrate the exploration of fiber art techniques and drive the unique possibilities of soft materials. Representing many of the artists who have helped define modern fiber art since the 1950s\, browngrotta arts reflects the cultivated eye and intellect of its directors\, husband and wife team\, Tom Grotta and Rhonda Brown. \nFounded in 1987 in Wilton\, Connecticut\, browngrotta arts showcases unique sculptural and mixed media works with an emphasis on concept\, supported by technique. The focus of the work is on the materials and the technical mastery of the artist as intrinsic to the significance of the work\, prioritizing aesthetic value over utility. Museum-quality artworks by more than 100 international artists are represented through art catalogs\, art fairs\, co-partnered exhibits at museums\, retail spaces\, and an online gallery. \nThe founders open their private home – a two-story barn built in 1895 expanded and contemporized by architect David Ling in 2000 – for “Art in the Barn”\, a unique annual salon-style exhibition. Over 3500-square feet of space with a viewing vista of 55’ allows for experiencing works that reflect complex illusionary space. The 21’ high ceilings permit the installation of tall sculptures and two free-standing walls enable dramatically shaped fiber structures best hung off the wall. The living environment also grants the artwork to be shown in situ. browngrotta arts has published 50 art catalogs and placed works in private and corporate collections in the US and abroad\, including the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Museum of Arts and Design\, Art Institute of Chicago\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum. They also regularly work with architects and interior designers offering consultation for commissioned artworks and site-specific installation for commercial and residential spaces. SUMMARY:Lu Yang: "Doku: Digtal-Alaya"
DESCRIPTION:Jane Lombard Gallery is pleased to present Doku: Digital Alaya\, the first New York gallery exhibition of Lu Yang\, a rising star in the global art world. Lu Yang is at the forefront of the generation of artists from China\, born in the 1980s whose lives paralleled the growth of a global economy. In Lu Yang’s world\, cultures collide\, the digital realm prevails\, and religions must be reinterpreted. These artworks–packed with avatars\, while grounded in the latest scientific inquiries—are wildly engaging and often disturbing\, creating post-human life forms in a world dominated by Japanese anime and interactive video games. \nDoku: Digital Alaya combines ancient Buddhist ideas about reincarnation with the latest technology of motion capture and live animation.  Doku is Lu Yang’s latest nonbinary avatar named after the phrase\, “Dokusho Dokushi”\, meaning “We are born alone\, and we die alone.” Digital Alaya\, the title of this show\, is a reference to ālayavijñāna\, the term for a storehouse of consciousness that is the basis of all mental\, spiritual and physical development.  In the course of the exhibition\, Doku appears in six 3-D environments\, each representing one of the six realms of rebirth in a Buddhist concept of reincarnation. \nThe central question is whether our lives in the digital realm—made so acutely apparent during the pandemic—has undermined or replaced ancient religious ideologies.   Lu Yang bypasses meditation or more conventional means of improving karma and goes directly to the assistance of scientists and technicians to find new ways to keep the cycle of life going in cyberspace. \nTo create a life-like digital post-human\, Lu Yang collaborates with a team of scientists\, 3D animators and digital technicians using motion capture\, detailing the features of her face and facial expressions so that the avatar\, Doku\, looks remarkably like its creator. Body movements are also generated through motion capture of dancers and musicians\, providing Doku with a perfect androgynous body. The artist is reborn repeatedly as a nonbinary\, androgynous\, ever-present avatar\, capable of talents beyond physical limitations. Doku appears in six different settings that Lu Yang creates herself using 3D digital techniques. The resulting work is displayed on lightboxes\, videos\, and installations. The video\, Doku: Digital Reincarnation takes viewers behind-the-scenes to see a process straight out of sci-fiction\, as fascinating as the final works themselves. \n\nAbout Lu Yang \nBorn in 1986 in Shanghai where she is currently based\, Lu Yang prefers to play with pronouns and insists she “lives on the internet” to further confuse fixed notions of identity. She attended the China Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou\, BFA and MFA\, under the tutelage of Zhang Peili\, the godfather of Chinese video art. A 2019 winner of the BMW Art Journey award\, she has shown internationally including the M Woods Museum in Beijing\, the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne\, and many other venues. She is currently in the Asia Society Triennial in New York. \n  Save
