SUMMARY:Discovering Your Creative Photographic Path Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:Remote learning \nThese Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nMost beginning photographers tend to randomly capture images of everything they see and experience\, resulting in confusing portfolios of single photographs and a lack of strong intellectual and aesthetical bodies of work. This intensive 3-weeks workshop is designed to encourage all students to find their unique creative voices\, resulting in solid directions for the future and applicable projects for everyone regardless of experience. \nCreative photography is a process\, one that utilizes a simple approach to establishing photography projects\, otherwise known as concepts. Four keywords\, WHY\, WHAT\, HOW\, and WHO serve as the foundation in forming intellectually and aesthetically resolved bodies of fine artwork. Finding your own creative voice is the result of applying this simple method to your photography projects\, not an elusive born talent\, but rather a process that involves writing simple artist statements\, researching a particular subject matter or techniques\, and experimenting with the aesthetics of an idea\, your idea. After an initial review of images\, each student will be encouraged to pursue a single idea or project\, resulting in a fully resolved mini body of work by the end of the workshop. DESCRIPTION:Using the exhibition States of Play: Prints from Rembrandt to Delsarte as a starting point\, curator Elizabeth Rudy and conservator Christina Taylor will lead a dynamic conversation about printmaking with a group of Boston-area printmakers. \nThe speakers will discuss the role of revision\, correction\, and adjustment in the printmaking process. Each artist will present an example of how they’ve reworked one of their projects\, and the group will explore how editing and change play a fundamental role in the creation of fine prints. \nSpanning four centuries\, the works in States of Play unveil the layers of creative revision behind finished prints. Central to this process is the concept of a “print state\,” which traditionally refers to a version of a print that precedes the final product. DESCRIPTION:Etherton Gallery is pleased to present our new exhibition\, Michael O’Neill\, On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace\, opening with a reception 7:00-10:00 pm\, Saturday\, December 4\, 2021 at our new location\, 340 South Convent Avenue. The show runs through Feb. 5\, 2022. Michael O’Neill spent ten years photographing the masters and gurus of yoga\, meditating with monks in the Tibetan Plateau\, living with sadhus in their tents at the Kumbh Mela\, and marveling at the boys who practice the little known discipline of Mallakhamba at the wrestling grounds in Kochi\, India. DESCRIPTION:First Street Gallery Affiliate Artist Jane Shoenfeld will be reading from her new poetry book\, Petals in the Tunnel\, which includes images of her art as well as poems that have been published in a number of literary magazines. Jane is also a licensed art therapist in Santa Fe\, NM\, and both her art and poetry incorporate psychological “deep image” perspectives. \nNEA Fellow Donald Levering will be reading from his forthcoming 16th poetry book\, Breaking Down Familiar. This book explores addiction\, dementia\, and dying through a compassionate poetic perspective. The exhibition runs from November 30 – December 18\, with a special reception on December 3 from 5-7pm. \nMind the Gap is Strata Gallery’s first two-person exhibition to showcase an established and an emerging artist together and in dialog. David Olivant’s Retrogylphs reinvent characters and imagery from earlier sculptures and assemblages. Jennifer Van’s photography centers on emotional expression and the human form. \nWhile on the surface the artwork is quite different\, each artist is deeply concerned with the expression and communication of nuanced emotional states filtered through diverse perspectives. Together these works explore the fraught dynamics of human contact and the nature of the interpersonal “gap” that humans constantly have to “mind”. \nDavid Olivant is a native of England and got his MA from the Royal College of Art in London. After three years living in New Delhi in the mid-eighties where he had his first solo exhibition he moved to the US. Since then\, he has shown in NYC\, Chicago\, LA\, Fresno\, Santa Fe and Davis. \nJennifer Van received her BFA in Graphic Arts and a BA in Art History from California State University Stanislaus. An economy of expression and the role that color plays is the focus of my work. \nMy motivation is to manipulate color\, shape\, composition and subject matter in such a way that it engages the viewer and invites closer investigation and interpretation. \n  \nGilles Giuntini ‘s collage pieces are a product of the imposed isolation and consequent focus that Corona has granted us. They attempt to break away from more established conventions of collage. At their core the pieces are about contradictions both natural and political; contradictions inherent in the profound state of transition in which he believes we currently find ourselves. \n  \nKathy A. Moore paints and draws from intense visual observation based on the still life motif. Her intent is to place the viewer within her immediate visual perspective\, as if the viewer is present\, stepping out of a spectator role. Within each still life\, she aspires to convey a luminous\, quiet\, and intimate order. \n  \nJohn Rohlfing New ceramic vessels. \n  \nCarolyn Sheehan creates art works that are best described by color and images. She combines creativity and imagination with emotions in every piece with the sole purpose of not only creating an aesthetic that impacts the feelings but causes pleasure as well. Every piece is worked like a sculpture which is three dimensional and they take shape in a style in which the icon is always the focal point. \n  \nJane Shoenfeld Although my paintings are grounded in the natural world of forms\, movement\, and light\, much of my work is abstract and invokes the world of dreams. SUMMARY:Live from London: the Lubaina Himid exhibition at the Tate Modern
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Merrill\, PhD.\, Professor of Performance Studies\, Rhetoric and Public Advocacy Program\, Department of Writing Studies and Rhetoric at Hofstra University\, for a virtual conversation\, live from London\, discussing the Lubaina Himid exhibition\, which is on view at the Tate Modern from November 25\, 2021 to July 3\, 2022. Professor Merrill is a contributor to the exhibition catalogue. \nThe Lubaina Himid exhibition\, including recent work and selections from throughout her career\, takes inspiration from Himid’s interest in theater and unfolds in a sequence of scenes designed to place visitors centerstage and backstage. Initially trained in theater design\, Himid is known for her innovative approaches to painting and to social engagement. She has been pivotal in the UK since the 1980s for her contributions to the British Black arts movement\, making space for the expression and recognition of Black experience and women’s creativity. Over the last decade\, she has earned international recognition for her figurative paintings\, which explore overlooked and invisible aspects of history and of contemporary everyday life. In 2017\, she was awarded the Turner Prize and in 2018 she was bestowed with the honorary title of CBE for her contributions to the arts. \nProfessor Merrill is a performance and cultural historian\, specializing in 19th century performances and social issues on stage and in the streets. She applies her research and publications about performance history and critical race and cultural studies\, and spectatorship\, to a range of cultural artifacts\, artworks\, and performances. Currently Professor Merrill’s work on Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid’s “Memorial to Zong” is part of an exhibition at Lancaster Maritime Museum. \nAdmission is free. SUMMARY:'Manhatta: City of Ambition' at Art Basel Miami Beach\, Booth G3
DESCRIPTION:Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition inspired by Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler’s avant-garde documentary film Manhatta (1920–21) at Art Basel Miami Beach 2021. Brought together in celebration of the centennial of Manhatta’s premiere\, the works on view explore themes of urbanity\, industry and immigration\, conjuring visions of urban life that capture the scintillating energy and soaring aspirations of a densely populated metropolis. Featuring a broad selection of artists central to the gallery program\, Manhatta: City of Ambition celebrates urban centers as loci of inspiration\, highlighting artworks that exalt the struggles and triumphs of life in a major city rebuilding itself in the wake of global catastrophe. \nA diverse group of works by artists associated with the 20th century New York avant-garde anchors the presentation in the city to which Manhatta is dedicated. Commuters (1954) by Norman Lewis (1909–1979)\, portrays the frenetic bustle of midcentury New York through the artist’s signature calligraphic line and sublimely atmospheric abstraction. George Tooker’s (1920–2011) otherworldly vision of Washington Square Park\, Fountain (1949–50)\, is an early example of the artist’s masterful figurative practice containing all the hallmarks of his mature career\, including an intensely psychological set of symbols and a radiant palette executed in his signature egg tempera medium. Beauford Delaney (1901–1979) likewise portrays the popular gathering place of the Greenwich Village creative community in his 1949 painting Washington Square\, an exemplary work from his Greene Street period in which his fauvist-inflected palette and expressionistic facture affectively describe the site as an idyllic oasis within the concrete expanse of Lower Manhattan. Howard Cook’s (1901–1980) iconic rendition of the Brooklyn Bridge\, The Bridge No. 1 (c.1951)\, constitutes an ode to the feat of modern engineering that connects the city’s two most populous boroughs. Embodying the electrified visual environment of the modern cityscape are Red Grooms’ (b.1937) monumental tribute to turn-of-the-century architectures\, Flatiron Building (1995)\, which incorporates a live electrical component\, and Irene Rice Pereira’s (1907–1971) Glass Construction (c.1944)\, a textured glass lightbox composition that echoes the nested\, luminescent grid of an urban environment after sunset. \nWhile many of the artists included in Manhatta: City of Ambition were luminaries of the New York scene\, the purview of the exhibition encompasses urban centers across the United States. Two major paintings from the interwar years effectively convey the grand architectural achievements of Chicago’s swiftly rising skyline in City Lights (1933) and City Ultimate (1936) by Raymond Jonson (1891–1992). In Edmund Lewandowski’s (1914–1998) Industry (1942)\, workers toil in a factory scene set in the artist’s native city of Milwaukee; Lewandowski (who ran in the same Precisionist painting circles as Sheeler) sought to elevate the sleek\, complex forms of modern industrial machinery as well as the workers who operated them\, who he considered to be exemplars of American progress. A particularly architectonic example of Claire Falkenstein’s (1908–1997) Fusion series will be on view; using an original technique she developed in Europe\, Untitled (Fusion) (c.1970) melds copper with jewel-toned glass similar to the artisanal Murano glassware that inspired the series’ conception\, transforming a centuries-old Venetian tradition into a thoroughly modernist American masterpiece constructed in Venice Beach\, California. A rare study by Harlem Renaissance master Aaron Douglas (1899–1979) evidences the artist’s refined graphic sensibilities\, applied at the height of his faculties in advance of his most ambitious mural commission\, the Cravath Hall cycle at Fisk University in Nashville. Another mural study\, Untitled (Mural Study\, Camp Wo-Chi-Ca) (1945)\, demonstrates Charles White’s (1918–1979) unparalleled draftsmanship; inspired by the artist’s experiences at a progressive summer camp in Hunterdon County\, New Jersey\, the composition advances a multicultural vision of society defined by access to education and protected workers’ rights. Finally\, a prime example of Harry Bertoia’s (1915–1978) high modernist metalwork sculpture reflects the midcentury architectures in which many of his public artworks were installed throughout the Midwest; constructed in the years after he left a wildly successful career as a designer to create sculpture full-time in his eastern Pennsylvania farmhouse\, Untitled (1956) constitutes an experiment in embodied variation limited to a stripped-down set of component parts and repetitive constituent motifs to create a structure simultaneously solid and transparent. \nVisitors will have the opportunity to view Manhatta in a dedicated alcove of the booth; the silent film contains verses from Walt Whitman poems in lieu of narrational exposition. Sheeler and Strand shot the film at various locations in Lower Manhattan throughout 1920; in fact\, fans of Strand’s photography will notice several locations that the artist also documented in some of his most famous photographs. Both Strand and Sheeler were protégés of Alfred Stieglitz\, and many of the film’s sixty-five shots resemble the sharp focus and richly varied tonal scale of a platinum print. Often using extreme camera angles evocative of a Cubist perspective\, the 11-minute film comprises a series of vignettes that echo the structure of Whitman’s verse. Manhatta is considered by most film historians to be the first avant-garde film produced in America\, amounting to a moving portrait of the island wherein visions of modern life are captured via a non-narrative\, documentary approach. The film was digitally restored in 2008\, as most extant versions were jittery\, scratched celluloid prints that had been overexposed due to years of screenings and poor storage practices. Thanks to the efforts of Anthology Film Archives\, The British Film Institute\, DTS Digital Images\, Lane Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, The Library of Congress\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The National Gallery of Art and Eye Filmmuseum\, all 11\,223 frames on view at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery’s booth have been corrected to reflect the crystal-clear\, steadily shot film audiences saw in the 1920s. Enhanced by Whitman’s rhapsodic words\, Manhatta’s silvery impressions of the era’s achievements in architectural innovation\, urban infrastructure and industrial efficiency perfectly reflect the thematic concerns of the works on view. \nManhatta: City of Ambition is Michael Rosenfeld Gallery’s fifteenth presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach. \n  Save

DESCRIPTION:The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts’ Visual Literacy Program is an important resource in educating the children of today to become the great artists of tomorrow. FMoPA works hands-on to provide minority and underprivileged children with the opportunities to express themselves and develop their passion for arts and culture.\n\n\n\n\nAnna’s Story\nFMoPA gave seven-year old Anna access to an artistic medium to share her story\, which sends a powerful message for immigrants and those struggling with language barriers. Through our Visual Literacy Program\, we were able to give Anna an opportunity to express herself with a camera. She only photographed images of locks and fences\, illustrating her time spent in an immigration detainment center. To share a story through pictures is important for every individual\, but even more so for those who have less ability to communicate and be understood verbally. Although this narrative is told through the lens of a single child\, it tells a story about so many others who have also experienced the isolation of living in a foreign place with little ability to communicate. Becoming a solution for issues that extend beyond our exhibitions\, issues that are much bigger than us\, makes our work feel worthwhile and meaningful. Watching Anna grow from a traumatic experience and express her trauma in a way that is both constructive and healing has changed the way we view our impact. We are not just an art museum; we go so far beyond that. \n\n\nDanny’s Story \nAmongst many others\, one child spoke loud through his photography instead of his voice. Within FMoPA’s Visual Literacy Program\, Danny found a way to connect with his peers in a way he never had before. Danny is on the Autism Spectrum\, many of the ways he processes and communicates with the world differs from what we are used to\, this shows primarily through the fact that Danny is nonverbal. This did not necessarily make him the target of bullies but it did alienate his relationship with his classmates\, causing him to be outcasted and pushed to the side. However\, once his class begun taking courses with FMoPA and got a camera in their hands\, they quickly learned a whole new side of Danny. His photographs were ethereal and abstract\, he enjoyed taking photography and often shone above others as he consistently practiced and improved. Danny’s peers loved his photographs and often took the time to try and communicate with him to improve their own photography\, even if it wasn’t by conventional means of speaking. All Danny needed was a new form of expression for his classmates to better understand him. We at FMoPA love watching children grow and interact through our programs. Danny’s story is an amazing outcome; he is one of the many that we hope to impact within the photography community of Tampa Bay. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTo make this impact possible we rely on the generous donations of our members and supporters. $100 will buy a camera that children like Anna and Danny can use to participate in this program. Vivo\nThe exhibit by Mary F. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Department of History of Art and Architecture\, the Harvard Art Museums present Art and Thought in the Dutch Republic\, a three-part lecture series delivered by Hanneke Grootenboer\, professor of art history at Radboud University Nijmegen\, The Netherlands\, and the 2021 Erasmus Lecturer on the History and Civilization of the Netherlands and Flanders at Harvard University. \nRoom for Reflection: The Space of Painting \nThe new genre of interior painting enjoyed great popularity among 17th-century Dutch citizens. Its indoor scenes featuring people involved in mundane activities resemble the domestic settings in which they were hung.
