This special event will take place on Thursday\, January 27th from 6-8 p.m. in the Diffley Board Room and Great Hall of Bellarmine Hall. \n**The conversation between Deborah Willis\, PhD and Adger Cowans has been rescheduled to Wednesday\, March 30 at 5 p.m. in the Dogwood Room of the Barone Campus center. He is also one of the founding members of Kamoinge\, a Black photographers collective whose mission is to ‘Honor\, document\, preserve and represent the history and culture of the African Diaspora with integrity and respect for humanity through the lens of Black Photographers.’ This exhibition\, curated by Halima Taha\, presents Cowans’s use of photography to articulate the beauty within the human condition and the world we live in with over fifty images from his illustrious career. SUMMARY:Discovering Your Creative Photographic Path Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:Remote learning \nThese Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nMost beginning photographers tend to randomly capture images of everything they see and experience\, resulting in confusing portfolios of single photographs and a lack of strong intellectual and aesthetical bodies of work. This intensive 3-weeks workshop is designed to encourage all students to find their unique creative voices\, resulting in solid directions for the future and applicable projects for everyone regardless of experience. \nCreative photography is a process\, one that utilizes a simple approach to establishing photography projects\, otherwise known as concepts. Four keywords\, WHY\, WHAT\, HOW and WHO serve as the foundation in forming intellectually and aesthetically resolved bodies of fine artwork. Finding your own creative voice is the result of applying this simple method to your photography projects\, not an elusive born talent\, but rather a process that involves writing simple artist statements\, researching a particular subject matter or techniques and experimenting with the aesthetics of an idea\, your idea. After an initial review of images\, each student will be encouraged to pursue a single idea or project\, resulting in a fully resolved mini body of work by the end of the workshop. Yet others use photography\, industrial processes of fabrication\, or create conceptual and performance art. The contemporary works are shown together with older stone objects such as Buddhist steles\, a scholar’s rock\, and inkstones\, which provide historical touchpoints for the artists’ reinterpretations of these forms and media. SUMMARY:Romare Bearden: Collage/In Context at FOG Design+Art
DESCRIPTION:For its inaugural presentation at FOG Design+Art\, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is pleased to announce Romare Bearden: Collage/In Context\, a dual presentation of exhibitions exploring the evolution of collage practices throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. A solo exhibition of collage works by Romare Bearden (1911–1988)\, will feature nineteen masterworks created throughout the 1960s and 1970s\, when the artist’s creative prowess was at its height. Seeking to convey the unparalleled status of Bearden’s contributions to the medium\, the booth will also feature a group exhibition curated to contextualize Bearden’s work among other major American artists working in collage from 1937 to 2019\, providing unique insight into the precedents\, impact\, and legacy of Bearden’s work. \nRomare Bearden began his career as a political cartoonist in the 1930s\, an endeavor that anticipated his later work with ephemeral\, mass-produced printed matter. He even used a collage technique in several of his cartoons from this period\, pasting clippings from newspaper articles into his panels to set up his strip’s message\, which often focused on the political struggles of the African diaspora in the US and abroad. The clean\, expressive linework seen in his cartoons carried over into his painting career of the 1940s and 1950s\, when he authored a vibrant body of modernist works whose imagery gradually vacillated between process-based abstraction and cubist-inflected figuration. Although the timeline of the artist’s earliest mature experiments in collage is uncertain—dates range from 1956 to 1961—Bearden did not earnestly begin his collage practice until the months spanning 1963 to 1964\, at the age of fifty-one. The US political climate had reached a fever pitch in advance of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August of 1963\, and the artist\, who had grown up in the south and was eminently aware of the nation’s civic failings\, found his practice reinvigorated by possibilities he discovered in figurative collage. Working in a mode that incorporated approaches from the cubist and dada collages with which he was familiar\, Bearden began producing collage works at an intrepid pace. \nRomare Bearden: Collage will present a survey of Bearden’s masterful\, intricate compositions focused on themes as expansive as his own talent and wide-ranging interests\, which included Greek mythology\, jazz\, blues\, European Old Masters\, and Black American life in both urban and rural settings. Highlights of the presentation will include La Primavera (1964)\, one of the artist’s first major collages that converges cultural signifiers from southern Black American life with allegories of the European Renaissance; Spring Way (c.1968)\, a work the artist revisited over a period of several years that was inspired by his family history and the Great Migration; and Blue Shade (1973)\, a collage that incorporates an especially diverse array of media and improvisational composition techniques. Ultimately\, Bearden was enamored of the medium’s potential to lay bare the foundational structures of pictorial representation\, in both social and formal terms. As Thelma Golden writes\, Bearden was drawn to collage’s capacity to get at an “essential notion of representation [by] opening up the authentic and the experiential through formal means.”[I] \nWhile Bearden’s collages drew widespread acclaim and recognition for their originality and influence\, the medium as a whole experienced a renaissance in the middle decades of the twentieth century\, as all manner of painters\, printmakers\, filmmakers\, and sculptors likewise found the medium replete with generative possibility. In fact\, the increasing prevalence of collage techniques in 20th-century art was the subject of a landmark exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1961 called The Art of Assemblage\, which Bearden visited. Exhibiting 250 works by 130 artists\, the show traced the evolution of the medium from the cubist experiments of Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris through the movements of dada\, surrealism\, nouveau réalisme\, abstract expressionism\, and neo-dada. Curated by William Seitz\, the exhibition’s sprawling parameters sought to demonstrate the immense impact of collage and assemblage practices on the primary movements of 20th-century Western art. \nCollage/In Context takes an approach similar to The Art of Assemblage\, bringing together a diverse range of artists working in collage across multiple decades\, but with revised parameters to focus on artists working in proximity to Bearden. Many of the artists included here were also represented in the 1961 MoMA exhibition\, including Bruce Conner (1933–2008)\, Conrad Marca-Relli (1913–2000)\, Louise Nevelson (1899–1988)\, Richard Pousette-Dart (1916–1992)\, Anne Ryan (1889–1954)\, Joseph Stella (1877–1946)\, Esteban Vicente (1903–2001) and Charmion von Wiegand (1896–1983). Expounding on the indelible impact of Bearden’s work are collages by such artists as Nancy Grossman (b.1940)\, who worked closely with Bearden to develop a new technique to preserve the integrity of their supports under the weight of several layers of paper and glue. A strong selection of collages by Betye Saar (b.1926) dating from the 1970s through the early 1990s juxtapose objects of particular familial or autobiographical significance with an array of other elements\, often referencing sociopolitical ideas or mystical concepts. A small but potent group of works by Jay DeFeo (1929–1989) demonstrate the artist’s iterative process of formal experimentation\, wherein ordinary inanimate objects are anthropomorphized to suggest unexpected connections between subjects. Rounding out the presentation are works by artists that could have easily fit into the 1961 MoMA exhibition but were a bit less prominent—but no less important—at the time\, such as Hannelore Baron (1926–1987)\, Burgoyne Diller (1906–1965)\, Balcomb (1904–1990) and Gertrude Greene (1904–1956)\, Grace Hartigan (1922–2008)\, Alfred Leslie (b.1927)\, Larry Rivers (1923–2002) and Lenore Tawney (1907–2007). Finally\, a selection of works created in the decades following Bearden’s death\, including collages by Benny Andrews (1930–2006)\, Al Hansen (1927–1995) and William T. Williams (b.1942) emphasize the enduring influence of Bearden’s work. \nWhile the conceptual underpinnings of these artists’ collage works range from complex narrative\, to aesthetic experimentation\, to theoretical postulates\, all share a common impulse to transform fragmented materials into a new image bearing the significance of both its component parts and the reconstituted\, holistic composition. For many of these artists\, collage was a means to incorporate the substance of their lived reality into their art through a process that balanced degeneration and regeneration\, which was often a reflection of the social upheavals of their era. Bearden stands out as a leader in this arena\, as he recursively sought to translate American and African themes that survived or grew out of the ruptures of slavery and diaspora into a visual language created from the manufactured imagery of his moment. He was fascinated by the continuum he perceived in the rituals surrounding birth and death\, as well as the traditions that brought factions of society together to observe and reminisce. SUMMARY:Howard Smith | Marks in Time
DESCRIPTION:Jane Lombard Gallery is pleased to present Marks in Time\, an exhibition of new paintings  by Howard Smith. Since the 1960s\, Smith has dedicated his practice to exploring how brushstrokes and marks accrue to make color\, space\, shape and light. An abstract painter\, he was a member of the Radical Painting group meeting in New York in the 1980s. \nIn Smith’s paintings the brushstroke is just as important as the paint applied to the surface. The mark\, then\, is always working with the plane to elicit light. Here\, even with the use of only one color\, the applied color is always interacting with the ground to “make” a new color. The artist primarily paints in his studio by natural light\, which will vary depending on the time of day and time of year. Time becomes a visible theme within the work. The relationship between what is going on in the painting and external light is critical in how the viewer experiences the work. The surfaces of his works are constructed by individual dots\, strokes and lines – an additive process that requires time not only in application but within periods of non-action as well for layers to dry. \nThis need for both action and non-action in his process often means that Smith will work on multiple pieces at one time. He embraces relationality within his bodies of work – one series often informs another series or set of singular works to forge a kind of kinship or lineage. The artist refers to bodies of work as such – families\, beginnings and universes – and their presentation is arranged so that the works have a voice as both individuals and parts of a whole. His ongoing series of “Beginnings\,” for instance\, applies his painting methodology to very small formats. Each work within a “beginning” may only be a few inches across\, but composed of complex layers in color and stroke\, like a cell under a microscope. Smith’s series of “Universes\,” the predecessor to “Beginnings\,” explores the same idea in a slightly larger form with more complex\, detailed compositions – a generational devolution\, distilling process to its essence. \nThe exhibition’s title\, Marks in Time\, highlights this notion of temporal lineage in Smith’s process. The end results of his paintings are never predetermined\, in fact\, frequently he decides to leave them in a state of suspension\, or balanced tension. For him\, making is a slow\, careful process. The artist places great importance on giving the work a pulse; creating living\, breathing macrocosms\, universes with different languages and ways of being. \nAbout the Artist\nHoward Smith (b. 1943\, Chicago\, IL) lives and works in New York City and Pine Bush NY. Smith earned his B.A. from Colorado College in 1965 and went on to graduate school at Stanford University in 1965 & 1966. Smith has also resided in Maine\, Massachusetts\, Chicago\, and Paris. He has taught at the University of Colorado\, Pratt Institute\, School of Visual Arts\, New York University and CUNY College of Staten Island\, where he continues to teach. SUMMARY:Atlantic Gallery Presents: Sense of Place by Susan Rostow
DESCRIPTION:Susan Rostow’s sculptures resemble archeological artifacts with biomorphic traits\, prompting us to probe into their origin and meaning. Peppered throughout the gallery space\, the visceral and mysterious smaller scale sculptures titled Naiads\, allude to the nymphs from Greek mythology who protect and reside over rivers and marshes. In the background along the walls these hybrid creatures form a comical procession. Going about their business\, each projects a distinct gesture–a bulbous loner in orange hues by a tall pale figure with a protruding belly\, a pair pausing to engage in a vivid conversation or perhaps an argument. In the front\, duos or extended groups of mixed-scale sculptures hint at Rostow’s background as a prolific book artist. Here the sculptures reference spliced or carved book spines in myriad playful ways. They metamorphize into volumes of organic forms resembling abstracted human figures\, imaginary animals\, or both–all painted with rich colors ranging from earth tones to reds and vibrant yellows to algae greens—evoking natural matter. \nSusan Rostow is a Brooklyn-based multi-media artist. Her sculptural works remind us how to dream and reimagine our world: past\, present\, and future. Her recent work has been influenced by her Research Residencies at the New York Academy of Medicine and the New York Historical Society\, a collaborative project with CENTRAL BOOKING. Her work has earned a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship\, and a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Susan’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. Her work is in public and private collections including the Allan Chasanoff Bookwork Collection\, Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress\, National Print Archives. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Glen Cebulash: Places and Things
DESCRIPTION:“Places and Things” is Glen Cebulash’s first show at Bowery Gallery. The show features new works created during the current pandemic\, including striking large-scale abstract painting and intricate abstract drawings. \nArtist Statement from Glen Cebulash: \nLike many people during the pandemic\, I found myself spending an inordinate amount of time on the internet. Aside from trying to make peace with Zoom and virtual museum visits\, I indulged a longstanding interest in wandering the world on google maps. Of particular fascination was the “street-view” function\, which allowed me to maneuver through cities and towns\, as if driving. None of this has anything to do with painting. Nor is there any concrete connection between any of it and my work\, which I see as something more akin to a formal\, constructive game. Still\, these journeys were always on my mind and\, in some very real sense\, they informed my painting imagination\, hence Places and Things. \nThe painter Leland Bell\, once said “all painting comes from nature.” I have often reflected on this\, particularly as my own painting habit went from the perceptual to the non-objective. With its color\, density\, weight and rhythm\, the world and my ongoing desire to connect to it\, are always present for me in the studio. \nGlen Cebulash has shown throughout the United States\, in solo and group exhibitions\, and as a member of the Midwest Paint Group. He teaches at Wright State University in Dayton\, OH\, where he is Chair of the Department of Art and Art History. \nAn opening reception for the show is Thursday\, January 6\, 5-8 pm. \nThe reception is free\, open to the public\, and does not require tickets or a reservation. \n  \nThe show is on view at Bowery Gallery January 4-29\, 2022. \nBowery Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday\, 11am to 6pm. \nBowery Gallery is one of New York City’s longstanding cooperative galleries\, with a history of over six decades of showing contemporary art.
