SUMMARY:Discovering Your Creative Photographic Path Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:Remote learning \nThese Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nMost beginning photographers tend to randomly capture images of everything they see and experience\, resulting in confusing portfolios of single photographs and a lack of strong intellectual and aesthetical bodies of work. This intensive 3-weeks workshop is designed to encourage all students to find their unique creative voices\, resulting in solid directions for the future and applicable projects for everyone regardless of experience. \nCreative photography is a process\, one that utilizes a simple approach to establishing photography projects\, otherwise known as concepts. Four keywords\, WHY\, WHAT\, HOW and WHO serve as the foundation in forming intellectually and aesthetically resolved bodies of fine artwork. Finding your own creative voice is the result of applying this simple method to your photography projects\, not an elusive born talent\, but rather a process that involves writing simple artist statements\, researching a particular subject matter or techniques and experimenting with the aesthetics of an idea\, your idea. After an initial review of images\, each student will be encouraged to pursue a single idea or project\, resulting in a fully resolved mini body of work by the end of the workshop. Sequencing of images\, simple artist statements and presentation ideas will be explored throughout. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Photo Safari: Exploring Tampa’s Riverfront
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin FMoPA for a two-hour photo safari as we explore Tampa’s riverfront with our cameras. Professional photographer Amy Pezzicara will guide you through hands-on photographic challenges\, on-the-spot critiques\, and techniques. \nIn this hands-on photo safari\, we’ll explore the photographic techniques you can use to capture the essence of a place. Bring your camera and get to know Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park from every angle. We will work through shooting challenges and on-the-spot critiques to expand upon your thought processes. Amy will help you with questions that arise as you are photographing. Take this time to practice with a new camera\, brush up on rusty skills\, or just enjoy a few hours devoted to fun photography. \nThis class is appropriate for all levels of photography\, ages 13 and up. Please bring a camera that you know how to use and adjust settings. A phone is acceptable if you use an app that allows you to manually control the camera (such VSCO). Dress is casual as we will be outside and quite possibly on the ground at times. \n\n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:"Making Sense" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Denise Adler’s latest show\, “Making Sense” is a retrospective of sorts tracing the trajectory of work the artist has created over her professional life. A deep dive into the common threads that connect and distinguish her style and sensibility across mediums. Denise Adler sets out to create portraits and dreamscapes that express the mythic and legendary. These pieces\, both personal and archetypical\, memorialize a moment in time. Her mixed media work often takes the form of drawing\, painting and collage. Magazines\, photographs and found materials factor in and become the story within the story. Her solo show “Making Sense” in February 2022 at Pictor Gallery\, looks at the artist’s journey over her more than 40 year career. It includes photography\, printmaking as well as mixed media collage and pairs her earlier works with more recent work\, with the goal of telling a cohesive and personal story. \nIn Gallery 2 is “States of Mind” showing works by Terri Fraser\, Judith Luongo\, Elizabeth Stern \nPlease join us for the opening reception for Making Sense and States of Mind on Thursday February 10th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served in the lobby area outside the gallery. (Once inside\, we ask that you wear a mask.) On Saturday February 12th from 3-6 will also be having a Celebration\, Please join us then as well! Then on Thursday February 17th join us for our Pictor Salon\, featuring Plays For Us from 6:00-8:00 pm. This New York based group of actors will present 3 short play readings dealing with feminism\, politics as well as social and racial justice in: The Persistence of Nasty. He Jiancheng’s artworks are on view in the Walsh Gallery in the exhibition SEEING IS BELIEVING: Crossings and Transpositions\, Part II (January 21-March 5\, 2022). \nPlease note: this event is streaming only.  \nAbout SEEING IS BELIEVING: CROSSINGS AND TRANSPOSITIONS\, PART II: This exhibition\, organized by Professor of Studio Art Jo Yarrington\, features work by five contemporary Chinese artists: He Jiancheng\, Xiao Yao Ning\, Luo Biwu\, Zuo Zeng Yao and Zhang Zeng Min. Yarrington travelled to China in 2019 with four other American artists\, where they presented Part I of this international exchange. \nAbout ink/stone: This exhibition presents works by Chinese artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who engage with ink and stone as materials\, subjects\, and concepts. Employing a range of techniques and media\, the artists make diverse points of contact with older Chinese artistic traditions. Some embrace the emphasis on ink brushstrokes on paper or silk to render mountainous landscapes or rock forms; others incorporate media and styles usually associated with western painting: oil on canvas\, or gouache and watercolor. Yet others use photography\, industrial processes of fabrication\, or create conceptual and performance art. The contemporary works are shown together with older stone objects such as Buddhist steles\, a scholar’s rock\, and inkstones\, which provide historical touchpoints for the artists’ reinterpretations of these forms and media. The exhibition is curated by Ive Covaci\, PhD\, Adjunct Professor of Art History at Fairfield University. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Sacred Wound
DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY \nReception: Tuesday\, February 08\, 2022\, 5-7PM\nExhibition: February 8 -19\, 2022 \nSacred Wound features installation work derived from a multidisciplinary practice addressing issues of illness and the body. In this show\, paper is utilized as both primary materials and as metaphor for the body. Crumpled\, folded\, torn\, eroded\, splattered\, soaked\, dyed\, dissolved\, baptized\, stapled\, compacted\, flued\, and reshaped – paper undergoes multiple cycles of fragmentation and reformation. These transformations give rise to surfaces and forms evocative of and shifting between palimpsest and skin\, flower and viscera\, and volcanic rock and bodily organ. \nPhillip Byrne stated in a recent interview\, “I’m so excited to be an emerging artist at Strata Gallery and grateful for the opportunity to hold my first ever solo exhibition here. I am interested in exploring bodily boundaries in my work; however\, it is really the absence of bodily boundaries that interests me. I am fascinated by permeability – how the world seeps into the body and the body seeps into the world. During the creation of this work\, I have been meditating on the ways in which illness dissolves and transforms the body’s boundaries\, and how wounds can act as forces of both unraveling and dissolution as well as growth and change.” \nPhillip Byrne received a BA in Studio Art from CSU Stanislaus and is currently an MFA candidate at UC Davis. \n  Save

SUMMARY:CIVILIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENTS: Photographing the Rise and Fall of Western Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Wouldn’t it have been great if somebody had photographed the fall of Rome\, Tenóchtitlan\, Constantinople? For the first time ever\, in all of human history\, we have the ability to\, and are\, documenting (photographing) the fall of Western Civilization. \nThis lecture will be intellectually stimulating\, satirical\, and downright depressing\, or totally elevating\, depending on the part you are playing in the collapse of Western Civilization. \nWhen you think about civilization collapse\, you probably think of natural disasters\, war\, etc.\, and this lecture will absolutely address these possible “weapons” of our mass destruction\, while speculating that our demise will be more of a whimper than a bang\, with technology leading the way toward the widespread dehumanization of society\, including narcissism\, selfishness\, and the blurring of all boundaries so important to us for so many thousands of years\, like the boundary between the personal and public\, between work and home\, between chaos and order\, between the individual and the collective; though seemingly we have conquered nature\, with science and technology\, this is a delusion\, for we have only barely begun to conquer our human nature. \nBiography \nAlexander Nixon teaches Art History and Art at the University of Tampa and earned his BA at Stanford University (2000)\, where he received the prestigious Nathan Oliveira Award for Painting. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer (Guatemala\, 2008-10) and has written two books\, both novels\, and both\, more or less\, about the fall of western civilization. He makes sculptures out of bamboo and encourages everyone to go see his bamboo unicorn located at 805 S. Packwood Avenue. \n  Save

SUMMARY:NFT (non-fungible token) for Photographers: What\, Why and How
DESCRIPTION:The convergence of Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies has created an ecosystem for the presentation and distribution of digital and physical assets\, known as NFT. Photography\, both digital and analog\, is a perfect object to be converted into NFT\, taking advantage of the advantages of the blockchain\, which offers creators freedom\, security\, and total control of the work. \n\n\nIn this talk\, we will present in a general way the topics that we will be touching on in the “NFT for Photographers” workshop\, in which we will review the fundamental concepts of Blockchain\, Cryptocurrency\, and NFT; to later show step by step how they can place their photographic works as NFT\, both for exhibition and for sale. \n  \n– What is an NFT? \n– Electronic wallets \n– Blockchain and Cryptocurrency \n– NFT distribution platforms \n– NFT production cycle \n– Q&A \n  \nhttp://www.joseramirezphoto.com/nft \n\n\n  Save

As a musician\, singer\, song writer and guitarist who has played in Richmond cover bands\, Karen found the music migrating into her paintings. Guitars and drums found their way onto her canvases. This first occurred during the COVID19 isolation and the results were so intriguing Karen created a full body of work. This exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery \n  \n  \nFrom RVA to Virginia Beach by Jeff Morris \nJeff Morris enjoys painting the waterways of Virginia and the landscapes of Richmond. Integral to Cowan’s work is his conscious effort to remain “close to the natural movement of the universe through the vibrancy of life. I take a picture with my heart\, not my eyes.
