SUMMARY:ABSTRACTIONS: ANNE MARCHAND
DESCRIPTION:Abstractions: Anne Marchand\, opened to the public Saturday\, November 15\, 2021 in the STEAM gallery of the SHU’s Discovery Science Center in Bridgeport\, CT. The exhibition\, which features bold\, colorful\, large-scale abstract paintings by renowned artist Anne Marchand\, remains on display through May 15\, 2022. An artist reception will be held Saturday\, March 5 at 6:00pm \nInspired by the Hubble Space Telescope photographs\, Anne Marchand’s work is an exploration of the surprisingly colorful and frequently fluid-like state of the universe. Her mixed media pieces combine texture\, color\, and negative space to convey the dichotomy between the chaos of entropy and cohesion of nature\, capturing a sense of wonder\, introspection\, and imagination. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Nishiki Sugawara-Beda: Somewhere Around There
DESCRIPTION:Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present Somewhere Around There\, a New York debut solo exhibition of work by a Dallas-based artist Nishiki Sugawara-Beda from her latest series KuroKuroShiro\, “black-black-white” in Japanese. The series title is indicative of her process using Sumi\, a traditional East Asian ink\, to compose painted worlds in which to be immersed and commune with an inner\, quieter spirit. \nBorn and raised in Japan\, Sugawara-Beda was steeped in a poetic Japanese aesthetic valuing symbolic interpretation over direct representation. It is from this lyrical\, and oftentimes philosophical\, Japanese sensibility that Sugawara-Beda creates. Employing the landscape as a conceptual framework\, her works negotiate the tension between light and dark\, hard and soft\, abstraction and figuration. Throughout this exhibition\, the artist also considers the relation of past to present\, influenced by traditional Japanese scroll paintings that imply time relative to space. And yet\, her works transcend place and time\, offering no clear suggestion of a narrative or relationship between forms. \nSomewhere Around There features works in varying scale from small\, intimate paintings on handmade gesso-covered panels to hanging scroll works on paper in the Kakejiku tradition. In Sumi ink with its distinctly rich and subtle tones\, the monochromatic compositions are minimal in color and confounding in form\, encouraging reflection\, introspection\, and meditation. And as the viewer encounters and navigates the unknown\, new possibilities emerge. In the process\, the viewer is transported “there\,” referenced to in the exhibition’s title\, a portal in the material providing access to the spiritual. \n \nNishiki Sugawara-Beda website: https://nishikibeda.com/ \nNishiki Sugawara-Beda Instagram: \nhttps://www.instagram.com/nishikisugawarabeda.art/ \nNishiki Sugawara-Beda is a Japanese-American visual artist based in painting and installation. She draws upon her Japanese heritage to explore themes related to culture\, language\, and spirituality rooted in Zen Buddhism. Connecting across space and time\, she experiments in ancient Japanese materials and techniques including Sumi ink\, Kakejiku landscapes\, and rice paper\, to merge them with abstract and expressive forms familiar to the modern Western aesthetic. Sugawara-Beda has exhibited her work in venues including the Spartanburg Art Museum (SC)\, Morris Graves Museum of Art (CA)\, Dennos Museum (MI) and Amos Eno Gallery (NY). Publications include New American Paintings\, Expose Art Magazine\, AEQAI\, Athenaeum Review and the London Post. Awards including a Seed Grant\, Diversity Fellow Program\, International Enhancement Grant\, Idaho Arts Fellowship\, Sam Taylor Fellowship\, and Tusen Takk Foundation residency have supported her artistic research. In addition to national conferences\, including the College Art Association\, Sugawara-Beda also gives keynote speeches and workshops to cultural organizations including Pilipino American Unity for Progress\, Inc.\, OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates\, and Business Council for the Arts\, Dallas. See You There\, a full-color art book surveying her work from 2012 to 2020\, is published by Execute Magazine in 2021. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Lynette Lombard: The Air We Breathe: Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Bowery Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Lynette Lombard’s vibrantly expressionistic paintings.\n\nThere will be an opening reception on Thursday\, March 3\, 5pm-8pm.\n\nDescribing the process and inspiration behind these exuberant works\, the artist writes:\nAs a perceptual painter I have found my recent inspiration in two places: the midwestern townscape I saw from my studio window during lockdown and the third-oldest restored prairie\, Green Oaks\, twenty minutes from my home. These scenes have sustained me through the pandemic.\nAt Green Oaks\, I found release from the daily terrors of Covid\, environmental and civil rights injustices\, and experiences of loss during 2020-22; the range of life forms animated my work. At home\, I painted the color relationships between the clouds and the buildings\, at once drastic and precise. In search of the air all living things breathe\, I become consumed by intervals\, spatial fluxes\, slipping forms and sky\, but also by the tremendous complexity in the way nature is organized. \n\nProof of vaccination is required to enter the gallery. All visitors to the gallery must wear masks.\n  Save

SUMMARY:Wayne Gilbert The End of The Road at The Outsider Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:Wayne Gilbert: The End Of the Road\nOutsider Art Fair \nThe Metropolitain Pavilion \nFebruary 3rd-6th\, 2022 \n125 W 18th St\nNew York\, NY 10011 \n  \nBill Arning Exhibitions is proud to present Wayne Gilbert: The End of The Road as our special presentation at The Outsider Art Fair in New York City\, February 3rd-Feb 6th\, 2022 at the Metropolitan Pavilion 125 W. 18th street New York\, NY 10011 Thursday\, February 3rd. \n  \nWayne Gilbert (b1946) is a true Texas original having been active in the Houston area since the wild and wooly 80s curating\, dealing\, organizing spaces and creating his own extraordinary artworks. He creates stunning meditations of the primal stuff of life and death using human ash as his primary artistic medium. \n  \nWhen I arrived as museum professional to Houston in 2009 my museum’s senior curator Toby Kamps knew of my alternative-art lineage. Unlike most museum officials I had a tendency to favor works that would upset sensitive souls. He alerted me to Houston-based Wayne Gilbert’s importance. During an introductory lunch with Gilbert I met a confident artist who knew himself to be a brave and unique visual practitioner engaging the biggest human concerns. Gilbert asked almost innocently if the reason he had remained obscure outside of Texas was because he had chosen to remain based in Houston or because he used dead people as an art medium. I was sure it was a little of both I decided he was due to receive a  serious consideration not only outside Texas\, but globally. \n  \nWayne has a relationship with a funeral home that gives him unclaimed left behind boxes of ash. He mixes the ash with a gel medium and uses a palette knife to spread the material into its form and shape. It is important to know that each of the various earth tone colors is unique to the person in the box. It appears that each of us have our own earth tone color. He then decides on the image\, always focused on his iconography or mortality\, which one can argue is always the substance of great art. From the painted word “Intercourse” the act that starts the process that leads to being born and therefore inevitably dying. He depicted the symbols of the world religions interlocked\, the mental constructs that help us mitigate the fear of the inevitable. Several works also remind us of the Whitmanesque poetry of having one’s own human remains become the stuff of new plants\, essentially allowing us to be reborn into new life. \n  \nWayne Gilbert\, midway through his 70s is active curating\, running a gallery in Houston Heights called G Spot and constantly painting.  There have been scores of articles about him and one documentary film. He has written a detailed statement about why human remains attracted him. \n  \nHe has no illusions about his path in art knowing that most people would not choose to live with them in their homes he felt compelled to return repeatedly to the most primal material\, life and death as substance and content of his art. Gilbert’s art is not for everyone and I have been rebuffed by many with whom I have tried to share my enthusiasm for this extraordinary work\, but for those with a healthy understanding of the inexorable interwoven nature of death within and throughout life few artists have ever matched his extraordinary achievements. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Storytelling Through Photography Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Through Photography Remote Learning \nThese Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nWe all have a story to tell\, a legacy or statement\, a call to action\, a declaration of what you believe\, what makes you mad or happy\, your unique observations of the world around you\, your life itself with its peaks and valleys. The medium of photography makes it possible to tell your story and sometimes make a change. A picture tells a thousand words. Several pictures correctly sequenced tell a full story – your individual story. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the art of telling a story through creating a visual narrative. Multiple images have the power of expressing thoughts\, ideas\, experiences and beliefs in a linear format. Storyboarding and careful sequencing of photographs following a clear concept\, your unique voice and communications to the outside world\, using many case studies and background information on the starting point of any project: The Why\, What\, Who\, and How. \nWe all have a unique story to share with others\, it can be a powerful and quiet voice\, but we have a responsibility to tell our stories as part of our background\, culture\, legacy and circumstances. The power of words through titles or series’ names are also explored\, rounding up to a full story. \n\n\n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Putting on the Glitz: Art Deco Fashion
DESCRIPTION:As the Art Deco era dawned in the early 1920s\, life had changed dramatically for American women. They were entering the workforce in increasing numbers\, had gained the right to vote\, and had more opportunities for education. The bicycle\, and then the car\, allowed this new “modern woman” freedom to leave her home without male escort and socialize at nightclubs and speakeasies. In this new world\, she also wore a new type of dress—one inspired by Art Deco’s blocky geometries. In the 1920s\, fashionable women wore dresses with dropped waists and calf-length hems\, often made of satin or covered in beadwork to exploit Art Deco’s fascination with light and sheen. In the 1930s—as longer gowns came back in style—women’s fashion often combined simple\, fluid construction with geometric pattern to create streamlined looks reminiscent of Art Deco architecture and industrial design. Drawn from the Wichita Art Museum and Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum permanent collections\, Putting on the Glitz combines Art Deco-era clothing and accessories with prints and paintings of fashionable women on the town by artists such as John Sloan\, Martin Lewis\, and Kenneth Hayes Miller.\nPutting on the Glitz is organized in conjunction with American Art Deco: Designing for the People\, 1918–1939. \n  Save

SUMMARY:The International Block Print Renaissance Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The International Block Print Renaissance began in the last decades of the 19th century in Europe\, as artists and collectors rediscovered the block print medium. Wichita played a major role in expanding this renaissance throughout America. In 1922\, the newly assembled Wichita Art Association presented American Block Print Makers as one of its first exhibitions. The exhibition inaugurated a century-long relationship between Wichita and prints. Beginning in 1928\, Wichita hosted an annual juried block print exhibition. It continued through the 1990s and became one of the most important print competitions in America. In these same years\, the Wichita-based Prairie Print Makers—a national print artist collective—was founded\, and from 1931 through 1965 assembled annual exhibitions. Together\, these events firmly established Wichita’s position in the history of printmaking and American art.\nThe International Block Print Renaissance Then and Now includes over 140 prints. Together with its accompanying catalogue\, the exhibition explores Wichita’s important role in the history of this international renaissance. It features prints by European leaders including Emil Orlik\, Walther Klemm\, Henri Riviére\, Frank Morley Fletcher\, John Platt\, Allen Seaby\, Jules Chadel\, Hans Neumann\, and Auguste Lepére. It also includes works by the Japanese masters Katsushika Hokusai and Ando Hiroshige. These European and Japanese masters influenced and inspired the American printmakers featured in the show\, including B.J.O. Nordfeldt\, Ernest Watson\, Helen Hyde\, Frances Gearhart\, Gustave Baumann\, and C.A. Seward. Many of these artists were chosen for the initial 1922 exhibition and the annual print shows that followed.\nThe International Block Print Renaissance Then and Now also celebrates the ongoing vigor of this renaissance through the work of 12 contemporary printmakers—Jean Gumpper\, Mark Sisson\, Mike Lyon\, Karen Kunc\, Leon Loughridge\, Gordon Mortenson\, Micah Schwaberow\, Walt Padgett\, Michelle Martin\, Tim High\, Louise Fisher\, and Linda Lee Boyd. These artists—like their predecessors who worked a century before—continue to push the artistic possibilities of the block print medium. Join WAM in celebrating the 100th anniversary of block prints in our city\, then and now. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Not Dior’s New Look III
DESCRIPTION:In November of 2021\, The Contemporary Art Modern Project formally announced a partnership with Fashion Fights Cancer\, a non-profit organization founded in 2004 that offers innovative and therapeutic programs in fashion and design. To celebrate the partnership\, The Contemporary Art Modern Project will exhibit works from Anya Anti\, Elly Azizian\, Franck de las Mercedes\, Isher Dhiman\, Alice de Kruijs\, Vicky Martin\, Fares Micue\, Miss Aniela\, Nikolina Petolas\, Evelyn Politzer\, Christy Powers\, Sonya Revell\, Julie de Waroquier\, Naomi White and Hans Withoos in the third installment of Not Dior’s New Look\, during National Cancer Prevention Month in their Westport\, CT locale. \nThis exhibition stands as a statement of the legitimacy of fashion within the fine art realm\, but more importantly\, it stands as a reclamation of the power that has historically been denied to marginalized perspectives on the basis of appearance. It is a breathtaking exploration of the ways in which self-perception and aesthetic choices are mutually influential. Not Dior’s New Look presents a collective prioritizing of understanding with oneself\, one’s need\, one’s wants and that is where the true power of fashion lies- the power to change the perception of others and your perception of yourself. \nOpening February 22\, 2022\, Not Dior’s New Look III\, will be on display until March22\, 2022\, at The CAMP Gallery: 190 Main Street\, Westport\, CT 06880. The opening reception will be held on February 22\, 2022\, from 5:00-9:00PM; VIP showings will be available February 22-26\, 2022. \n  Save

Weisl\, Jr. Lectureships in Art History\, funded by the Robert Lehman Foundation. \nWe invite you to join the conversation via the following options: \n\nIn person in the Kelley Theater\, located in the Quick Center for the Arts\n\n\nStreaming via thequicklive.com\n\nPlease note: \n\nFor all Spring 2022 in-person events\, all adult visitors and staff are required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination and a valid ID.\n\n\nChildren under 12 are not currently required to be vaccinated to participate in any programs.\n\n\nProof of a negative Covid-19 test will not be accepted as an alternative to vaccination.\n\n\nA face mask or covering is required for all guests during indoor events\, except in designated locations.\n\nAbout SEEING IS BELIEVING: CROSSINGS AND TRANSPOSITIONS\, PART II: This exhibition\, organized by Professor of Studio Art Jo Yarrington\, features work by five contemporary Chinese artists: He Jiancheng\, Xiao Yao Ning\, Luo Biwu\, Zuo Zeng Yao and Zhang Zeng Min. Yarrington traveled to China in 2019 with four other American artists\, where they presented Part I of this international exchange. \nAbout ink/stone: This exhibition presents works by Chinese artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who engage with ink and stone as materials\, subjects\, and concepts. Employing a range of techniques and media\, the artists make diverse points of contact with older Chinese artistic traditions. Some embrace the emphasis on ink brush strokes on paper or silk to render mountainous landscapes or rock forms; others incorporate media and styles usually associated with western painting: oil on canvas\, or gouache and watercolor. Yet others use photography\, industrial processes of fabrication\, or create conceptual and performance art. The contemporary works are shown together with older stone objects such as Buddhist steles\, a scholar’s rock\, and inkstones\, which provide historical touchpoints for the artists’ reinterpretations of these forms and media. The exhibition is curated by Ive Covaci\, PhD\, Adjunct Professor of Art History at Fairfield University. \n  \nImage: An Ho 安和(Chinese b. 1924)\, Coming Ashore\, ca. late 20thcentury\, album leaf\, ink and color on silk. SUMMARY:Discovering Your Creative Photographic Path Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:Remote learning \nThese Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nMost beginning photographers tend to randomly capture images of everything they see and experience\, resulting in confusing portfolios of single photographs and a lack of strong intellectual and aesthetical bodies of work. This intensive 3-weeks workshop is designed to encourage all students to find their unique creative voices\, resulting in solid directions for the future and applicable projects for everyone regardless of experience. \nCreative photography is a process\, one that utilizes a simple approach to establishing photography projects\, otherwise known as concepts. Four keywords\, WHY\, WHAT\, HOW and WHO serve as the foundation in forming intellectually and aesthetically resolved bodies of fine artwork. Finding your own creative voice is the result of applying this simple method to your photography projects\, not an elusive born talent\, but rather a process that involves writing simple artist statements\, researching a particular subject matter or techniques and experimenting with the aesthetics of an idea\, your idea. After an initial review of images\, each student will be encouraged to pursue a single idea or project\, resulting in a fully resolved mini body of work by the end of the workshop. Sequencing of images\, simple artist statements and presentation ideas will be explored throughout. \n  Save
