SUMMARY:Kaethe Kauffman – Yoga: Interiore Eterno
DESCRIPTION:Hawaii-based artist Kaethe Kauffman’s exhibition Yoga: Interiore Eterno is an installation of prints on silk that documents both physical movement and meditative stasis. Using a string dipped in paint\, the artist ties the filament around a hand\, knee\, elbow\, or torso\, and when the body part is flexed\, the movement is recorded as a kind of off-printing. In Kauffman’s art\, the body writes itself upon its own skin in a ritual of self-revelation. This act of marking and exposure is documented by Kauffman’s photographic images\, which are digitally repeated and colored\, drawn upon by hand in a variety of media and the vibrant results are printed on silk much like the large banners found in Buddhist temples. In an expansion of the body’s own “speech” through movement\, Kaethe Kauffman’s images combine into larger fields of replication and mirroring\, until the individual body is subsumed into a larger vision. A long-time practitioner of yoga and body movement\, Kaethe Kauffman has been the subject of solo exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. DESCRIPTION:In The Contemporary Art Modern Project’s showing of Fragmentos Rescatados\, Lucia Warck-Meister deals with the concept of memory\, be it its relationship with nationhood\, its deprecation in the face of historical revisionism\, and its frailty in part due to the ravages of change and time. Curated by Mario Andres Rodriguez. An opening reception will be hosted in our Miami gallery on July 15 from 6-8 PM \n  \nAmongst the abstract thoughts privy only to mankind\, collective memory is unique in its ability to creep into identity. Countless examples exist: the liturgical stories we use to guide our lives in global religions\, the filtered recounting of nationhood fed to the global youth in elementary schools\, the story of how your mom and dad fell in love and fatefully conceived their children. These memories inform who we are and what we believe about the world around us; because of their centrality in our paradigm of thought\, one would imagine that these memories were durable\, steadfast\, tangible items\, that they are realities of one’s life. Such a status would make life more simplistic and direct. \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lucia Warck-Meister: \n  \nLucia Warck-Meister is a sculptor and mixed-media artist interested in exploring individual and collective memory and how they build the foundation of our identity. “Who we are is contingent on what we remember\, and how we use those memories to construct new narratives. Through memory\, I explore ideas of identity\, gender\, narrative\, and visibility.” \nWarck-Meister holds an MFA from UNA University of the Arts\, Buenos Aires. DESCRIPTION:In her first curatorial project\, Martine Gutierrez brings together work by nineteen young artists working in a variety of mediums to explore the state and fate of humanity. A forward-looking exploration of the zeitgeist\, ritual being reconsiders commonly held images of what the future looks like. Futurist daydreams of flying cars and glass cities are no more. Instead\, the artists selected by Gutierrez envision a “post-modern\, post-monogamous\, post-gender\, post-script\, post-colonial\, post-traumatic\, post-depressive\, post-apocalyptic” world that is far grittier and down to earth than the ones predicted by 1980s science fiction imaginings. \n  \nThe show\, which will include a sculpture and an accompanying presentation in RLWindow by Gutierrez\, will play with the politics of identity and the uncertain fate of our planet. Completely lacking in pretense or artifice\, her still lifes and landscapes are built on acute sensitivity\, keen analysis\, and deep love for the experience of seeing. They richly reward close observation. \nSpanning Kotula’s entire career\, Lynn Kotula: A Life in Painting 1984–2020 gives us what any artist would hope to leave: a chronicle of her keen visual understanding of the world\, and what painting can make of it.  Kotula’s work explores the tension between the perceived world and the abstraction inherent in the two-dimensional surface of a painting. “I think that opposition is what nourishes me\,” she wrote. “Abstraction/naturalism. I need both and I’m always looking for ways to have one nourish or enrich the other.” \nThis will be Kotula’s twelfth solo show in New York. The program will be presented on Saturday\, July 9\, at 2 p.m. Strata Gallery is located at 418 Cerrillos Road\, in the Design Center. \nHow does a painting sound? How do line and shape\, color and texture\, mood and compositional relationships translate into music? During the program\, arts educator and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead the audience in an interactive visual exploration of one of Mary Vernon’s colorful\, imaginative\, nine-foot wall paintings. Oliver and the musicians will then use the impressions of the audience and the elements of the painting to create a musical realization of the artwork\, using the painting as a musical score. \n“Mary’s a native New Mexican and a great artist\,” said Prezant. “Her work rides the line between the figurative and the abstract\, and it provides great opportunities for music making. And the gallery space at Strata is perfect for this kind of program\, very resonant\, and very intimate.” \n“Carla\, Jerry\, and Katie are some of my favorite musicians for this kind of special performance\,” he said. “Highly trained\, musically flexible\, and great improvisers. DESCRIPTION:Jane Lombard Gallery is pleased to announce its summer group exhibition: Punchline\, a takeover of its Tribeca space by the Boston-based Praise Shadows Art Gallery. Presenting works of various media from ceramics to video games\, the show is inspired by artists who use humor to communicate issues that are often considered taboo or difficult subjects of conversation. Punchline is also inspired by our need for levity\, our desire to laugh out loud unexpectedly. The (art) world could use a little more laughter. The exhibition\, featuring work by Jon Burgerman\, Reniel Del Rosario\, Madeline Donahue\, Divya Gadangi\, the Guerrilla Girls\, Garrett Gould\, Oliver Jeffers\, Nina Katchadourian\, Kalup Linzy\, Duke Riley\, and Ben Sloat\, opens with a public reception on July 7th from 5–7 PM\, and will be on view through August 12th\, 2022. \nThe OGs of using humor to drive home a message are the Guerrilla Girls\, the anonymous group of feminist\, female artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism within the art world. Since 1985 they have used\, according to their bio\, “outrageous visuals and killer statistics to expose gender and ethnic bias and corruption in art\, film\, politics and pop culture.” The Guerrilla Girls will present nine iconic posters dating from 1989 to 2021. \nHumor as a powerful tactic for persuasion is evident in the work of Duke Riley. Most humans have a difficult time comprehending the scope of ocean pollution and our contribution to the problem. Rather than taking a sanctimonious tone\, Riley makes us laugh while simultaneously calling out our dependency on single use plastics. An installation of colorful fishing lures? Look closer. The lures are made from ocean trash\, including plastic tampon applicators\, toothbrushes\, and lighters.  \nFour of Nina Katchadourian’s photographs from the Disasters section of the acclaimed Seat Assignment series will be included\, all deliciously funny depictions of anxiety while flying. One example\, Pretzel Meteor (2012)\, is a witty work that triggers everyone’s aerophobia by using two items at every passenger’s disposal: an inflight magazine and a complimentary bag of pretzels.  \nPaintings include Oliver Jeffers’ Rescue the Future (2018) featuring a DeLorean crashing spectacularly into the ocean; and a group of paintings by Jon Burgerman depicting adorable characters that capture our communal sense of anxiety\, including a large work titled Lexapro (2022). \nMadeline Donahue’s presentation will include a table of ceramics\, along with a small suite of drawings and paintings\, all depicting her tender and heart-warming moments as a mother to young children\, always with a twist of surrealism and hilarity. \nSculpture is also represented in works by two artists. Garrett Gould’s wall hanging wood sculptures might be considered “realistic” if it were not for their absolute unrealism. Wreath (2022)\, is a perfectly finished\, accurate depiction of a New York City pretzel\, except that it has small wood whistles all over it. Ben Sloat’s resin and enamel figurine-like sculpture series is a parody of Koons’ porcelain Michael Jackson and Bubbles.  \nTwo video projects are also represented: a video projection of Art Jobs and Lullabies (Covered and Remixed) (2015) by Kalup Linzy\, and the playable video game Please Maintain Your Original Indian Beauty (2014) by Divya Gadangi. Linzy’s work is a visual mixtape\, covering tunes from Curtis Mayfield to Dionne Warwick\, all starring himself as versions of these fabulous icons. Gadangi’s video game is inspired by a barrage of texts from her mother attempting to stop the artist from dying her hair. Set in her Staten Island childhood home\, the player navigates this house only to confront text bubbles from her mom\, including the namesake “Please maintain your original Indian beauty.” \nReniel Del Rosario’s installation is a dedicated space customized for this exhibition. Featuring a pegboard system of small ceramic objects packaged in polybags and gallery co-branded hang tags\, the hilarious titles and satirical homages are tailored for New York City\, New York art life\, and even the other artists in the show.  \nOrganized by Yng-Ru Chen\, founder of Praise Shadows\, many of the artists presented have been exhibited at the Boston gallery\, or are represented by the gallery\, and some have worked with the gallery on public programs and talks.  \nAbout Praise Shadows LLC \nWe believe that the art ecosystem is filled with untapped potential\, and our work is rooted in partnering closely with artists to develop opportunities in emerging models of creativity and entrepreneurship — exhibitions\, commissions\, brand partnerships\, new technologies\, original concepts that no one has ever tried before. DESCRIPTION:The Contemporary Art Modern Project (CAMP) and Fiber Artists Miami Association (FAMA) are partnering with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Westport\, CT. for a forty-artist exhibition held at MoCA from June 30–September 4\, 2022. The exhibition\, a textile survey of the ways in which gender\, culture\, and sociopolitics intersect\, was the inaugural collaboration for CAMP and FAMA’s annual exhibition\, Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse\, in 2020. \nInspired by the gendered history of textile and fiber work and seeking to both open dialogue and democratize access to artistic practice\, Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse sees topics such as capitalism’s effect on the body; the interplay of race and gender in fine art; reproductive justice; bodily autonomy; ageism; immigration and displacement explored through textiles. The result is a subversion of textiles’ perceived nature—soft\, easy\, women’s busy work—birthed from poignant and biting\, sometimes jarring\, social commentary. \n“The timeliness of this exhibition is not lost in the obvious\, but becomes another rung in the continual search for equality. At the time of the original exhibition’s opening on September 19\, 2020\, we mourned the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As we approach 2022’s [opening]\, we worry about the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade—that a right awarded in our lifetime would teeter on the balance of being revoked\, turning reproductive and body rights over to a moral minority instead of the individual\,” says CAMP founder\, Melanie Prapopoulos. \nThe opening reception for Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse at MoCA Westport will be held on June 30\, 2022 from 6–8 PM. DESCRIPTION:Etherton Gallery presents portraits of cowboys and women from Jay Dusard’s epic\, 25\,000 mile road trip through North America for his 1981 Guggenheim Fellowship in Jay Dusard: Cowboy with a Camera. In 1981\, Jay Dusard won a Guggenheim Fellowship and embarked on an epic adventure\, photographing the working cowboys and women of North America. Over a period of two years\, he traveled 25\,000 miles with an 8 x 10 inch view camera\, and rode and photographed at 45 ranches in the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico. The juror’s statement and awards will be presented at 7pm during the opening reception.\nArtspace began Radius 250 in 2005 to identify and help promote the high caliber and variety of artwork that is created in the Mid-Atlantic region. Work is accepted from artists who live or work within 250 miles of Richmond\, VA. The radius purposely excludes New York city in order to focus on parts of the Mid-Atlantic beyond its scope. Every two years\, Artspace selects a juror from somewhere within the radius and puts out the call for entries for artists in all media to submit their work for review.\nAndrew Haley born 1965\, Buffalo\, New York. Attended public school\, worked as a chef 1980-1998. Local artists participate in the monthly All Media Show. \n  \nRecent Works by Emily Baker \n  \nEmily Baker\, inspired by Virginia’s lush natural landscape\, presents an exhibit that explores the tangible and obscure. Her paintings offer a meditative outlet for reflection on the environmental elements that make up the earth as a whole creating a visualization of the interconnective energy within our natural landscape. Emily marries this with her curiosity for organic structure and evolution of form\, producing works of both the tangible and obscure. DESCRIPTION:Penelope and the Geese\, a new chamber opera by Milica Paranosic (composer) and Cheri Magid (librettist)\, is a retelling of the Penelope story from The Odyssey in which Penelope\, rather than waiting twenty years in celibacy for Odysseus’ return\, gets to explore her sexuality and her self in his absence. \nThe opera is scored for harp\, flute and cello and those instruments’ ancient twins\, Greek lyre and aulos and Serbian gusle\, and is performed by an all-female cast. DESCRIPTION:Artspace presents Radius 250 2022\, the 9th installment of its biennial regional juried exhibition. The opening\, scheduled for Friday\, June 24\, 2022\, 6-9pm\, will showcase work by 41 artists selected from a group of 139 entries by juror Andrew Haley\, Owner\, Haley Fine Art\, 42 Main St\, Sperryville\, VA 22740. The juror’s statement and awards will be presented at 7pm during the opening reception.\nArtspace began Radius 250 in 2005 to identify and help promote the high caliber and variety of artwork that is created in the Mid-Atlantic region. Work is accepted from artists who live or work within 250 miles of Richmond\, VA. The radius purposely excludes New York city in order to focus on parts of the Mid-Atlantic beyond its scope. Every two years\, Artspace selects a juror from somewhere within the radius and puts out the call for entries for artists in all media to submit their work for review.\nAndrew Haley born 1965\, Buffalo\, New York. Attended public school\, worked as a chef 1980-1998. SUMMARY:Caprices\, a Contemporary Homage to Goya
DESCRIPTION:In the next CAMP gallery exhibition\, Caprices\, a Contemporary Homage to Goya\, artists Aurora Molina\,German Molina\,Violeta Caldrés\, Jac Lahav and Luis Alonso all draw directly upon the original Caprichosof Francisco de Goya y Lucientes and\, like the original concept\, draw attention to the inherent folly in society\, whether that folly be a direct interpretation of a piece\, or our reaction to what we encounter as other. The original pieces by Goya were etchings\, simply because the artist found that a line would be the ideal means of expression\, but because no one in Spain at the time was creating etchings\, Goya had to look to artists that he admired—in this case Rembrandt and Tiepolo. Combining their techniques with his deep respect and understanding of nature\, he was able to develop and make a blatant statement about the society in which he existed\, often finding that same society to be ignorant\, superstitious\, and limited. The timeliness of these new interpretations\, and treatments of the idea to call a society into check is also timely today\, as we\, too\, inhabit a modern world still weighted with ignorance and superstition\, and are often limited. \nGoya\, and the artists above\, stand fast in their self-imposed role as witnesses to society\, documenting what they see\, what they encounter\, and insisting that we\, the audience\, join them in taking on the identity of a witness\, accept what is being shown to us\, and hopefully become the entities of change and awareness. \n\nCaprices\, a Contemporary Homage to Goya will be on display in The CAMP Gallery Westport from June 15–July 15.
