DESCRIPTION:Gjert Rognli: What Nature Knows | Performance\, Film\, Photos\, and Installation\nFritjof Capra: The Emergence of Novelty\nGjert Rognli’s multimedia project What Nature Knows – Dan maid luondu diehtá reflects a visceral\, personal connection with Arctic Northern Norway – a region defined by light\, darkness\, and stark seasonal contrasts. Rognli\, who hails from the Indigenous Sámi people\, draws on his childhood experiences among shamans steeped in the ancient animist folk religion. Through film\, photography\, sculpture\, and performance\, the artist explores his passionate bond with the organic world. With this immersive experience\, Rognli invites us all on a mythological journey into deep forests and across misty waterways—where surreal phenomena guide the viewer through the unknown.\nGjert Rognli was selected by NOoSPHERE Arts’ international jury as our 2021 Residency Award winner after careful consideration of hundreds of applications originating from forty-seven countries. We are very pleased to finally welcome him onboard Mothership NYC after a long\, pandemic-induced delay. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the August-September featured artists and their artwork at this informal artist talk.\nArtists include: Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, and Carol Meese.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Artist books have been the main focus of McCarney’s art practice since 1980. He feels the book is the perfect form to combine his academic background in photography and design with his love for the “corporeality of craft and philosophic possibilities of sculpture.” He states\, “The interpretive space of the book and the interaction of a reader engage my interest in communication as process and form.”\n\nMcCarney’s decision to make artists books is for both practical and formal reasons: they are easy to transport\, access\, and share; their history is socially and culturally saturated; and everyone has some relationship with a book. According to McCarney\, “a book’s materiality and proximity to the reader offer a unique experience for expressing ideas quietly and with purpose.”\n\nMargaret Buchanan’s oil paintings will be displayed in her exhibition\, The Quiet. For Buchanan\, painting is “a place of agitation and excitement mixed with utter calm and joy.” Buchanan responds to composition\, light\, color\, space\, and texture\, and how those elements orchestrate our everyday moments. Her paintings suggest the presence of figures that do not appear in the composition\, referenced by a space where “someone is about to enter or has just left\, the liminal spaces between people\, the aftermath of human activity.” The Quiet articulates a dynamic space\, one that negotiates many states of being to create a sense of place.\n\nA book artist\, painter\, and designer\, Margaret Buchanan divides her working life between painting and her graphic design business\, Buchanan Design. She studied graphic design and painting at Virginia Commonwealth University\, in Richmond\, Virginia\, where she earned a BFA with honors.\n\nThe mystery of unspoken words\, unconscious thoughts\, and unheard prayers emerge in Carol Meese’s exhibition of paintings\, Prayer Books. Meese’s previous career in psychology provides her with an “understanding of what motivates others\,” how to relate on an emotional level\, and of the importance of the subconscious and unconscious helping (her) to communicate on a subliminal level. Saying things that have no words.”\n\nDuring our pandemic time was spent reading and thinking about solitude. Buried in these paintings are words from Theodore Rilke’s poem “Solitude.” and personal prayers. A pentimento effect is created with paint\, plaster\, ink and graphite. Thoughts about solitude are inscribed then obscured as if by smoke or fog or ignored thoughts or speech. Flynn-Chapman is a photographer and art historian. She began taking photographs to illustrate her doctoral thesis on architecture while at Northwestern University. She found she had a natural affinity for composition saying\, “the buildings told me what to shoot.” These photos communicate each building’s presence and their history with the viewer. Her architectural photos became the cornerstone of Flynn-Chapman’s portfolio which expanded to include locations as well as people from around the world.\n\nA long time member of Artspace\, Flynn-Chapman has recently been recognized for her contributions to the gallery with the naming of our multi-purpose space in her honor. The space will be officially inaugurated in her name during the opening reception for this month’s shows at 7pm. The Flynn-Chapman Gallery will feature a variety of exhibitions and events including Spotlight shows for our artist members and exhibitions of work by other area nonprofits and schools. The Flynn-Chapman Gallery will also provide space for art classes and workshops.\n\nA Spotlight exhibition of three Artspace artist members\, Ed Tepper\, Susanne K. DESCRIPTION:To wind up the summer\, in August we pick a non-profit to support and have an artful fund raiser along with our exhibits. In considering our town and the beautiful river that runs through Richmond\, we think Friends of the James River Park is the perfect pick. Anything we do to keep the city clean directly affects the health of the James. Friends of the James River Park are citizen stewards of the park and provide ongoing support for conservation\, enhancement\, and recreational enjoyment of the park\, while protecting its natural and historic environments. Now that’s a mission! \n  \nAt our opening reception you will see renderings of the James River that depict the essence of Richmond’s greatest natural resource—in photographs\, paintings\, and sculpture all by Virginia artists. In addition\, the All Media Show will include a variety of subject matter and mediums. Three solo shows open artists: Keenan Cross\, Cathy Cazares\, and Elizabeth Caffery.   \n  \nPlease join us on August 26th\, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Make donations to the Friends of the James River Park through online links\, buy a ticket for the auction of a Bill Draper photograph of the James River\, bid on the silent auction items and for any purchase in the main gallery\, a portion will be donated to this cause. The exhibits continue through September 17\, 2022. Parking is free.  This event is free and open to the public. \n  \nAll Media Exhibit and James River Renderings 2022 \n  \nThe James River is Richmond’s defining natural resource. All during the year the Friends of the James River Park and James River Advisory Council (JRAC) work to conserve\, preserve\, and promote the river with clean-ups\, holiday boating parades and stewardship awareness. Art Works is only two blocks from the James. We have asked artists to capture images of the river for this exhibit. \n  \nThis month\, artists can submit work of any subject matter and medium. In addition to the usual prizes\, we will have a special award and prize for the best James River rendering. This exhibit is open to all artists and all mediums. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nKeenan Cross Recent Work \nAn accomplished artist\, illustrator and videographer Keenan Cross has pushed the boundaries of the style of his work to include different substrates\, digital art\, and even some animation. This exhibit emphasizes this evolution of style. \n  \nThe exhibit is in the Centre Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLife in Grunge by Cathy Cazares \n  \n  \n  \nCathy Cazares is a resident artist at Art Works. She combines photography\, sketches\, drawings\, paintings and found objects to create her mixed media artwork. She is fascinated with people and the urban environment. What may look like grunge to many\, she finds beauty therein. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nUnconscious Voyages by Elizabeth Caffery \n  \nElizabeth Caffery’s work reveals a story book assembly of images and often depicts the intermingling of opposing emotions–wounds versus triumphs\, human tragedies versus successes. Sometimes a happy\, optimistic piece will emerge. The process is not deliberated but evolves on its own\, changing direction where needed. When two parallel planes of thought like light and dark reach an equilibrium\, an understanding\, Elizabeth express this realization in the artwork. Elizabeth’s personal growth is reflected in her art. Gratitude for Life\, both the good and bad that life offers are her incentives that keep her art moving forward. \nElizabeth received a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on Studio Art in 1986\, from Randolph Macon College. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception and meet the artist:\nFriday\, August 26\, 5–7pm\nExhibition continues through September 30\, 2022 \nJHB Gallery is delighted to present its second exhibition of work by artist Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio\, Southampton\, Long Island. Following the artist’s 2021 presentation at the same venue\, this year’s exhibition will focus on examples of Means’ iconic Light Bulb works—including new digital lightbulbs—alongside Abstractions produced using the artist’s characteristic innovative darkroom processes. \nFor over forty years\, Amanda Means has created a body of work that has pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium with her celebrated Leaf\, Flower\, Water Glass\, Light Bulb\, and Abstraction series. Means has been a darkroom innovator throughout her career: adapting a 19th century camera for use as an enlarger\, photographing objects without the use of negatives\, working with a large-format Polaroid camera\, and creating a series of remarkable abstracts working only with light and photographic materials. The artist’s darkroom alchemy was cited by the Guggenheim Foundation in awarding Means their prestigious Fellowship in 2017 for her contribution to contemporary photography. \nOur exhibition will include examples from all phases of the artist’s career. Alongside key works from Means’ ongoing series in which the materials and chemistry of the darkroom are masterfully manipulated to create sumptuous Abstractions\, we will also be debuting new works from the artist’s Light Bulb series in archival pigment prints. \nAmanda Means has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad\, and in 2021\, was honored with a career retrospective at University Art Gallery\, University of Massachusetts\, Dartmouth. She photographs in the land to explore these concepts. Roots will explore the body’s relationship to the earth and their tactile and intimate connection. \nMartin stated\, “I’m excited to be an Emerging Artist Member at Strata Gallery and to be a part of the Santa Fe art community. Having previously lived here\, I’ve always admired it. My work is about the relationship between the female body and the land. I’m interested in exploring how we perceive this connection and how the ephemeral nature of both the body and the land plays into the cycles of life\, death\, and rebirth. I work in a tactile manner and this exhibition will be just as much about the installation as it is about the images.” \nJulia C. Martin received her MFA in Photography from Arizona State University and her BA in Film & Photography from Montana State University. Her work has been exhibited and published nationally. This is the second year that contemporary sculpture has been installed at Kaatsbaan for the Summer Festival season. Curated by Hilary Greene\, the artworks complement the ongoing dance\, music\, poetry\, and culinary arts summer programming. This year’s participating artists are: Emil Alzamora\, Stuart Farmery\, Tristan Fitch\, Jared Handelsman\, Kenichi Hiratsuka\, Lowell Miller\, Portia Munson\, Shelley Parriott\, Eileen M. Power\, Gregory Steel\, Christina Tenaglia\, and Millicent Young.\nThe sculpture exhibition originated in 2021 in response to the Pandemic as Kaatsbaan moved its events outdoors so both artists and audience could safely experience Kaatsbaan’s world class dance and music performances. Must register here to participate. \nStrata Gallery presents a meditative artmaking opportunity on Saturday\, August 6 from 12-1pm. A body-scan meditation will be led by two artists and students within the exhibition space. \nRaimy Engel (she/her) and Tess Bourbeau (they/them) are both attending the graduate art therapy program at Southwestern College and New Earth Institute. They are passionate about the role art can take in developing self-attunement\, empathy\, and mental health care. \nThe intention of this body-scan and art experiential is to allow for the exploration of the body outside of physical categories. Self-image may not always be related to looks/body shape and may include knowledge of bodily history and boundaries. “The goal is to promote exploration of the unseen relationship we have with our bodies\,” the two facilitators state. \nAttendees will be guided through a body-scan meditation that pauses occasionally for responsive artmaking. All supplies will be provided. Tess and Raimy would like to acknowledge that a body-scan can be an intense experience for those with bodily trauma and encourage any interested participants to attune to their nervous system and engage with this meditation in a way that feels safe. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Artist Kurt Erickson’s dynamic\, colorful abstractions explore the bursts of radiance that come from the in-between spaces of our dreams. While awake\, colors are used to represent everything from mourning and love to excitement or rage. When noticing a color while dreaming\, the interpretation of that dream could be aided by what colors shine through. \nWhile working in his studio\, Kurt reverts back to a childlike creative headspace\, letting intuition take hold. His subconscious mind moves to the in-between spaces and glimpses light and darkness. This body of work\, like most of his work\, is accessible to anyone and is aimed at the child inside all of us. Kurt’s paintings encourage minds to wander\, referred to as dreams in the sense that they are open to interpretation. DESCRIPTION:Sequestered by COVID-19\, A-M Petersons found her backyard a refuge for discovery and contemplation – inspiring subtle\, beautiful evocations of lichen “ghosts”.  \nA-M Petersons has a relationship with her garden\, with the last two years cementing their bond. When home was a refuge\, fortress\, and jail\, the garden stepped up and led her to a new place – a place that already existed with a view she had previously ignored. For A-M\, the beams of the pergola became meditation mantras. She was led to look up\, consider the branches of the apple tree\, and examine the old retaining wall that holds the roots of a grapevine. The division is stark and is often excluded from the conversations about the state. Eastern Washington\, being away from the economic hubs and ports of the West side has developed differently. Much of the economics of this part relies on the Columbia river and the Grand Coulee Dam. In the industrial and agrarian landscapes of eastern Washington\, we can see many of the building blocks of the country – the ecosystem of human endeavor\, engineering ingenuity\, hard work and infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:Happy Hour Gallery is pleased to present a solo show of paintings by New York City/Woodstock NY-based painter Ford Crull   July 30th – August 9th. Ford Crull’s vibrant and meditative canvases bridge the legacy of Abstract Expressionism together with Symbolism to form entirely unique\, narrative canvases imbued with centuries of religion and culture in a spontaneous\, constantly evolving visual metaphor. Once completed\, his large and small paintings take on a life of their own with the viewer: organic tapestries of oil paint imbued with historical symbols as well as Crull’s own private kinetic and emotive painting. His richly vibrant canvases of deep red and blue oil pigments form an alchemic combination of civilisation’s most important religious and cultural iconography\, such as crosses\, circles\, knots\, shields and hearts. These anchors of culture easily float and blend into the beautiful and evocatively pigmented canvas in a conversation with the viewer\, creating a dialogue that transcends space and being. Thus\, Crull’s paintings exist in their own intentional and spontaneous planes of interpretation\, constantly evoking memory and emotion within the bandwidth of each new encounter and interaction with viewers. \nAbout Happy Hour Gallery – Happy Hour Gallery is the Hampton’s newest art gallery\, with it’s inaurgural exhibition launch on July 2\, 2022. Happy Hour’s main gallery is a unique 1200-squarefoot space with ample natural light. Owner John Andrulis has more than 15 years experience in the gallery business as an owner / director of art galleries in New Hope\, PA; Lambertville\, NJ and Philadelphia\,PA\, in addition to working previously as the Director of Chase Edwards Contemporary art gallery in Bridgehampton\, NY from 2017 to 2019. Andrulis is also a black & white film photographer who released the art edition run of photography books on the Hamptons titled: Water\, Wood\, Sand & Stones in addition to nine year book projects titled Philadelphia Documentations and The Jersey Shore Summer.Business partner\, Alex Dudelson owns a law firm in Brooklyn\, NY and is theAssociate Councel for the New York Policeman Benevolent Association. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: Ford Crull received his BFA in Painting from the University of Washington in Seattle\, WA. DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the artists and their artwork featured in Artspace’s July-August exhibitions.\n \nArtspace presents three exhibitions which focus on landscape\, mood and atmosphere. These exhibitions showcase a group exhibition by Hernan Murno\, Amy Sabrin\, Michelle Simoneau and Rosa Vera\, photography by Karen Commings and Andrew Hoff\, and tapestries by Susan Iverson\nWorlds Apart is a group show by Hernan Murno\, Amy Sabrin\, Michelle Simoneau and Rosa Vera. These four artists create diverse abstract and semi-representational work springing from the same impulse: the landscape\, whether the natural or built environment. Each takes a dramatically different approach to extracting and abstracting the essence of a landscape\, but all hope to provoke an emotional response in the viewer.\nKaren Commings’ and R. Andrew Hoff’s joint exhibition\, Carnival Nights\, is a photographic montage featuring edgy\, moody\, somber or surreal images of county fairs and community festivals in four states taken over the course of three years. Hoff and Commings state\, “The facial expressions\, postures and attitudes show the tedium of carnival life as the evening lingers on. There are multiple stories in these images left to the imagination.”\nIn Observation – Light\, Susan Iverson’s tapestries attempt to capture the strong emotions connected to fleeting moments of ocular pleasure.
