SUMMARY:Hank Feely - According to Gongsun Long (Recent Paintings)
DESCRIPTION:Gongsun Long was a Chinese philosopher who lived from 320 to 250 BC during the Zhou dynasty. He was known for postulating paradoxes including his most famous: “White horses are not horses.” He believed that pure logic may lead to absurd conclusions. Hank Feeley believes that the world we currently live in and his paintings pretty much bear out the truth of Mr. Long. \nThis show includes some of Feeley’s typical non sequitur paradoxical works but it also includes some different work that came as the result of the isolation of the pandemic. To amuse himself during the pandemic he experimented with different styles\, contents and mediums. Some of these finished works are in the show as well as some of the preliminary sketches and drawings leading to them. Also in the show are amusing collage portraits that he did\, again\, on a pandemic fueled whim. \nAll in all\, it’s work like this that caused Billy Collins to write:\n“If Hank Feeley were not so strikingly original\, I would say that he stands at the intersection of Magritte and Marvel Comics\, but as it is\, he has his own way of disorienting the viewer so we can see again\, now with our perception refreshed.” \n  Save

SUMMARY:Dorothy Frey: Studio Farm
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition dates: September 6 – October 1\, 2022 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 8\, 2022\, 5:00-8:00pm \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, September 10\,  2022\, 2pm \n  \nBowery Gallery is pleased to present “Studio Farm” by Dorothy Frey. The exhibition runs from September 6 – October 1 with a reception for the artist on Thursday\, September 8 from 5-8pm. The artist will give a talk on her work on Saturday\, September 10 at 2pm at the gallery. This is Frey’s first solo exhibition at Bowery Gallery. \nDorothy Frey is a painter who works from perception and invention\, examining sense of place at her Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania farmstead. Subject matter in her paintings stems from day-to-day living on and tending a multigenerational farm. Working onsite and in the studio\, colors develop as intuitive fusions of weather events\, seasons\, memories and various times of day. Cool tranquil shadows ground the compositions. Luminous pathways weave through the well-trodden land. Trees reach for one another creating protective arched canopies. \n “Dorothy Frey’s paintings are not the nomadic paintings of a landscape painter setting up their easel here or there long enough to complete a painting and move on. Frey is dug in. From Hans Herr\, the first Mennonite Bishop to immigrate to America in the early 1700s to her own young son (who makes an appearance in at least one of these paintings)\, this area of Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania has been cultivated and storied in her family for 10+ generations. Frey’s paintings are living participants in this persistent generational story\, laying bare their content through poetic weight found in painterly momentum and rhythms of trees; planes of grass\, sky\, and fields; and pockets of memory suspended in time as vignettes under boughs of trees.” \n-Jay Noble\, Artist\, Executive Director\, Mount Gretna School of Art \n  \nDorothy Frey also shows at Lancaster Galleries\, Lancaster\, PA. Her work has been included in shows at the Demuth Museum in Lancaster\, PA; Stein Galleries in Dayton\, OH; Art at Kings Oaks\, Newtown\, PA; Jessie Wilson Gallery\, Anderson\, IN; and Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, PA. \n  \nAbout Bowery Gallery:   \nFounded in 1969\, Bowery Gallery has been showing contemporary art of the highest quality for more than six decades. Bowery Gallery is a cooperative\, founded by artists and directed by the collective decision making of its member artists. From its beginnings\, Bowery Gallery has been a force for the expansion of art’s traditions in a venue unconstrained by commercial pressures. Named after its original location\, Bowery Gallery is now located in the heart of the Chelsea art district. \n  \nGeneral information: \nBowery Gallery \n547 West 27th Street\, Suite 508 \nNew York\, NY 10001 \n  \nHours: Tuesday-Saturday\, 11am-6pm \nAll visitors to the gallery must wear a mask. \n  \ninfo@bowerygallery.org  \n646-230-6655 \nwww.bowerygallery.org              \n  Save

SUMMARY:Katherine Sherwood\, 'Pandemic Madonnas and Other Views from the Garden'
DESCRIPTION:The George Adams Gallery is pleased to present our second exhibition of paintings by Bay Area artist Katherine Sherwood titled\, Pandemic Madonnas and Other Views from the Garden. Building on two on-going bodies of work\, her Venuses and Brain Flowers\, the exhibition will show the evolution of both series while also introducing Sherwood’s Pandemic Madonnas\, completed within the past year. Accompanying the exhibition is an extensively illustrated catalogue\, In the Garden of the Yelling Clinic\, surveying the development of all three\, ongoing bodies of work\, with scholarly essays by Ginny Treanor and Farley Gwazda\, along with a personal reflection by the artist. \nSherwood has long used her artwork to engage with concerns around disability and feminism\, by considering how both ableism and gender play a role in our understanding of art from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Herself disabled following a debilitating cerebral hemorrhage at forty-four\, in the decades since\, such concerns have only become more urgent and visible in Sherwood’s work. In these recent paintings\, she continues with her strategy of making revisionist additions to art historical images\, collaging in scans of her own brain or depicting her subjects with assistive medical devices – particularly those she uses herself. Simultaneously\, she has deepened her exploration of the historical precedent of female artists\, notably in a major self-portrait after an altarpiece by the 17th century Portuguese painter\, Josefa de Óbidos. While the original painting combines elements from devotional paintings and still-lives\, a hallmark of de Óbidos’s oeuvre\, Sherwood replaces the central Christ child with her own disabled body\, offering a two-fold critique: of the limitations in subject matter female painters historically faced and the liberating potential of the self-portrait. \nThe duality present in Venus (after de Óbidos) reflects two broader\, inter-related aspects of Sherwood’s work. She addresses the concept of the male gaze and preconceived notions of beauty in her Venus paintings\, modeled after classical odalisques\, while the Brain Flower series flips the script\, re-inserting the female gaze by considering the work of Renaissance female painters\, who were often limited in their subject matter to still-lives. As art historian Ginny Treanor points out in her contribution to the catalogue\, for the women whose paintings Sherwood appropriates\, the floral arrangements they painted were as much a scientific enterprise as an artistic one. Following in this tradition\, by replacing select flowers with collaged scans of her own brain; Sherwood draws a parallel between the beauty and complexity within both structures. \nAnother commonality across these series is the use of art historical reproductions as a substrate\, where Sherwood is literally working on the back of historical paintings or\, as in the case of her Pandemic Madonnas\, on the front. Working from examples of the Madonna and Child by Dürer\, Botticelli\, Raphael and others\, she directly alters the image\, adding in prosthetics\, braces\, crutches and other devices to the subjects as a commentary on the immaculate\, idealized body. Pointedly\, Sherwood intentionally models these interventions after antiquated\, outdated medical devices\, further drawing attention to our preconceptions around the visible markers of disability. A seated Madonna may be placed in a wheelchair\, the baby Jesus given a prosthetic limb or brace\, however the effect is not to undermine\, but rather transcend. As these paintings were intended to reveal the divine as more perfect beings\, Sherwood’s manipulations offer a more nuanced understanding of our inherent humanity. \nAs Sherwood discusses the trajectory of her work over the last ten years in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition\, she elaborates on her understanding of the “Garden” as a conceptual extension of the imaginary “Yelling Clinic:” a space for healing that has served as the inspiration for her paintings since 2010. The Yelling Clinic is also a disability collective Sherwood co-founded in 2008\, which among its goals\, combines art and activism to move conversations around disability outside a medical context. For Sherwood\, the interventions and re-contextualizing she manifests within her paintings are in themselves acts of healing and therefore an extension of her activism. Her “Garden” is home to the Brain Flowers\, where the blooms she paints are equally reminders of mortality and objects of beauty in their own right. \n  Save

For more details about Rognli’s residency project\, his inspirations\, and how he came to be an artist\, we invite you to read this interview announcing last year’s NOoSPHERE Arts Residency Award.\nFritjof Capra: As an overarching theme for WE ARE NATURE 2022\, we have selected from our very own favorite Scholar-in-Residence’s book Patterns of Connection (2021) four essential characteristics embodied in all forms of life. According to the “systems view\,” which has recently been developed at the forefront of science\, life organizes itself in networks; and these living networks are inherently regenerative\, creative\, and intelligent.\nWE ARE NATURE: Patterns of Connection is the 3rd iteration of our annual rooftop series combining Arts\, Environmental Activism\, and Community Building @ and around Kingsland Wildflowers @ Broadway Stages. Set in a surreally beautiful nature sanctuary sprouting on top of an ExxonMobil industrial plant on the bank of Superfund site Newton Creek\, the recurring WE ARE NATURE summer series offers a combination of multiple art forms – dance\, music\, performance\, visual art\, poetry\, prose and film – addressing humanity’s place on Earth in aims of engaging a diverse audience in environmental efforts through art.\n“We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So\, when we say that we have lost our connection to nature\, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.” —Andy Goldsworthy\nWE ARE NATURE 2022 is sponsored\, in part\, by the National Endowment for the Arts and also the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs\, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). SUMMARY:Artist talks: August/September exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the August-September featured artists and their artwork at this informal artist talk.\nArtists include: Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, and Carol Meese.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Artist books have been the main focus of McCarney’s art practice since 1980. He feels the book is the perfect form to combine his academic background in photography and design with his love for the “corporeality of craft and philosophic possibilities of sculpture.” He states\, “The interpretive space of the book and the interaction of a reader engage my interest in communication as process and form.”\n\nMcCarney’s decision to make artists books is for both practical and formal reasons: they are easy to transport\, access\, and share; their history is socially and culturally saturated; and everyone has some relationship with a book. According to McCarney\, “a book’s materiality and proximity to the reader offer a unique experience for expressing ideas quietly and with purpose.”\n\nMargaret Buchanan’s oil paintings will be displayed in her exhibition\, The Quiet. For Buchanan\, painting is “a place of agitation and excitement mixed with utter calm and joy.” Buchanan responds to composition\, light\, color\, space\, and texture\, and how those elements orchestrate our everyday moments. Her paintings suggest the presence of figures that do not appear in the composition\, referenced by a space where “someone is about to enter or has just left\, the liminal spaces between people\, the aftermath of human activity.” The Quiet articulates a dynamic space\, one that negotiates many states of being to create a sense of place.\n\nA book artist\, painter\, and designer\, Margaret Buchanan divides her working life between painting and her graphic design business\, Buchanan Design. She studied graphic design and painting at Virginia Commonwealth University\, in Richmond\, Virginia\, where she earned a BFA with honors.\n\nThe mystery of unspoken words\, unconscious thoughts\, and unheard prayers emerge in Carol Meese’s exhibition of paintings\, Prayer Books. Meese’s previous career in psychology provides her with an “understanding of what motivates others\,” how to relate on an emotional level\, and of the importance of the subconscious and unconscious helping (her) to communicate on a subliminal level. Saying things that have no words.”\n\nDuring our pandemic time was spent reading and thinking about solitude. Buried in these paintings are words from Theodore Rilke’s poem “Solitude.” and personal prayers. A pentimento effect is created with paint\, plaster\, ink and graphite. Thoughts about solitude are inscribed then obscured as if by smoke or fog or ignored thoughts or speech. The meaning is obscured\, left to the viewer to complete.\n\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, August 27\, 2pm\nExhibition Dates: August 26-September 17\, 2022 \n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: August/September 2022 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Artspace presents four solo exhibitions which revolve around communication with the viewer. The opening reception\, scheduled for Friday\, August 26\, 2022\, 6-9pm\, features artwork by Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, Carol Meese and Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman. Exhibition dates are August 26 – September 17\, 2022.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Thoughts about solitude are inscribed then obscured as if by smoke or fog or ignored thoughts or speech. The meaning is obscured\, left to the viewer to complete.\n\nPhotographs by Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman will be on display in her exhibition\, Reflections. Flynn-Chapman is a photographer and art historian. She began taking photographs to illustrate her doctoral thesis on architecture while at Northwestern University. She found she had a natural affinity for composition saying\, “the buildings told me what to shoot.” These photos communicate each building’s presence and their history with the viewer. Her architectural photos became the cornerstone of Flynn-Chapman’s portfolio which expanded to include locations as well as people from around the world.\n\nA long time member of Artspace\, Flynn-Chapman has recently been recognized for her contributions to the gallery with the naming of our multi-purpose space in her honor. The space will be officially inaugurated in her name during the opening reception for this month’s shows at 7pm. The Flynn-Chapman Gallery will feature a variety of exhibitions and events including Spotlight shows for our artist members and exhibitions of work by other area nonprofits and schools. The Flynn-Chapman Gallery will also provide space for art classes and workshops.\n\nA Spotlight exhibition of three Artspace artist members\, Ed Tepper\, Susanne K. Arnold\, and Joel Moses\, will be on view in the Flynn-Chapman Gallery during the August-September exhibition period.\n\nExhibition Dates: August 26-September 17\, 2022\nOpening Reception: Friday\, August 26\, 6-9pm\nInauguration of the Flynn-Chapman Gallery\, 7pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, August 27\, 2pm\n  Save

SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:To wind up the summer\, in August we pick a non-profit to support and have an artful fund raiser along with our exhibits. In considering our town and the beautiful river that runs through Richmond\, we think Friends of the James River Park is the perfect pick. Anything we do to keep the city clean directly affects the health of the James. Friends of the James River Park are citizen stewards of the park and provide ongoing support for conservation\, enhancement\, and recreational enjoyment of the park\, while protecting its natural and historic environments. Now that’s a mission! \n  \nAt our opening reception you will see renderings of the James River that depict the essence of Richmond’s greatest natural resource—in photographs\, paintings\, and sculpture all by Virginia artists. In addition\, the All Media Show will include a variety of subject matter and mediums. Three solo shows open artists: Keenan Cross\, Cathy Cazares\, and Elizabeth Caffery.   \n  \nPlease join us on August 26th\, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Make donations to the Friends of the James River Park through online links\, buy a ticket for the auction of a Bill Draper photograph of the James River\, bid on the silent auction items and for any purchase in the main gallery\, a portion will be donated to this cause. The exhibits continue through September 17\, 2022. Parking is free.  This event is free and open to the public. \n  \nAll Media Exhibit and James River Renderings 2022 \n  \nThe James River is Richmond’s defining natural resource. All during the year the Friends of the James River Park and James River Advisory Council (JRAC) work to conserve\, preserve\, and promote the river with clean-ups\, holiday boating parades and stewardship awareness. Art Works is only two blocks from the James. We have asked artists to capture images of the river for this exhibit. \n  \nThis month\, artists can submit work of any subject matter and medium. In addition to the usual prizes\, we will have a special award and prize for the best James River rendering. This exhibit is open to all artists and all mediums. Call for entries is July 22\, 2022 – August 16\, 2022. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork:  artworksrva.com   \n  \nThe juror is John Lee from William and Mary. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nKeenan Cross Recent Work \nAn accomplished artist\, illustrator and videographer Keenan Cross has pushed the boundaries of the style of his work to include different substrates\, digital art\, and even some animation. This exhibit emphasizes this evolution of style. \n  \nThe exhibit is in the Centre Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLife in Grunge by Cathy Cazares \n  \n  \n  \nCathy Cazares is a resident artist at Art Works. She combines photography\, sketches\, drawings\, paintings and found objects to create her mixed media artwork. She is fascinated with people and the urban environment. What may look like grunge to many\, she finds beauty therein. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nUnconscious Voyages by Elizabeth Caffery \n  \nElizabeth Caffery’s work reveals a story book assembly of images and often depicts the intermingling of opposing emotions–wounds versus triumphs\, human tragedies versus successes. Sometimes a happy\, optimistic piece will emerge. The process is not deliberated but evolves on its own\, changing direction where needed. When two parallel planes of thought like light and dark reach an equilibrium\, an understanding\, Elizabeth express this realization in the artwork. Elizabeth’s personal growth is reflected in her art. Gratitude for Life\, both the good and bad that life offers are her incentives that keep her art moving forward. \nElizabeth received a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on Studio Art in 1986\, from Randolph Macon College. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception and meet the artist:\nFriday\, August 26\, 5–7pm\nExhibition continues through September 30\, 2022 \nJHB Gallery is delighted to present its second exhibition of work by artist Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio\, Southampton\, Long Island. Following the artist’s 2021 presentation at the same venue\, this year’s exhibition will focus on examples of Means’ iconic Light Bulb works—including new digital lightbulbs—alongside Abstractions produced using the artist’s characteristic innovative darkroom processes. \nFor over forty years\, Amanda Means has created a body of work that has pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium with her celebrated Leaf\, Flower\, Water Glass\, Light Bulb\, and Abstraction series. Means has been a darkroom innovator throughout her career: adapting a 19th century camera for use as an enlarger\, photographing objects without the use of negatives\, working with a large-format Polaroid camera\, and creating a series of remarkable abstracts working only with light and photographic materials. The artist’s darkroom alchemy was cited by the Guggenheim Foundation in awarding Means their prestigious Fellowship in 2017 for her contribution to contemporary photography. \nOur exhibition will include examples from all phases of the artist’s career. Alongside key works from Means’ ongoing series in which the materials and chemistry of the darkroom are masterfully manipulated to create sumptuous Abstractions\, we will also be debuting new works from the artist’s Light Bulb series in archival pigment prints. \nAmanda Means has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad\, and in 2021\, was honored with a career retrospective at University Art Gallery\, University of Massachusetts\, Dartmouth. The artist’s work is included in many public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Nicola Erni Collection\, Switzerland; and National Museum of Photography\, Film and Television\, Bradford\, England. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Julia C. Martin\, Roots
DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY \nJulia C. Martin\, Roots\nAugust 23 – September 3rd\nReception: Friday\, August 26th\, 5-7PM \nStrata Gallery presents an Emerging Member solo exhibition\, Roots by Arizona based artist Julia C. Martin. The exhibition opens August 23rd\, with a special reception on August 26th from 5-7pm. \nJulia C. Martin’s work deals primarily with the topics of mortality\, ephemerality\, and time. She photographs in the land to explore these concepts. Roots will explore the body’s relationship to the earth and their tactile and intimate connection. \nMartin stated\, “I’m excited to be an Emerging Artist Member at Strata Gallery and to be a part of the Santa Fe art community. Having previously lived here\, I’ve always admired it. My work is about the relationship between the female body and the land. I’m interested in exploring how we perceive this connection and how the ephemeral nature of both the body and the land plays into the cycles of life\, death\, and rebirth. I work in a tactile manner and this exhibition will be just as much about the installation as it is about the images.” \nJulia C. Martin received her MFA in Photography from Arizona State University and her BA in Film & Photography from Montana State University. Her work has been exhibited and published nationally. She is currently based in Phoenix\, Arizona. This is her first solo show in New Mexico. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Nancy Floyd
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Floyd is a photographic artist and Professor Emerita at Georgia State University. Her project\, Weathering Time\, consists of nearly four decades of anti-perfectionist self-portraits and is included in the Academy Art Museum’s current exhibition\, Fickle Mirror: Dialogues in Self-Portraiture. \n“…the photographs show\, in fractions of a second\, my body standing in an environment (mainly\, I’m by myself but sometimes I’m with family and friends) in a straightforward manner for the camera. As time passes\, births\, deaths\, celebrations\, and bad days come and go; all the while\, the American experience evolves.” \nFloyd will discuss this long-term project and its greater context\, which encompasses the human experience\, family ties\, American life\, and the persistence of time and change. \n  Save

SUMMARY:MILLICENT YOUNG : In the Silence Between
DESCRIPTION:Millicent Young’s installation In the Silence Between is a meditative solo exhibition at the newly opened Studio Building Gallery at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park. Utilizing humble elements such as horse-hair\, ceramic\, lead\, barbed wire and wood\, Ms. Young creates quiet but powerful pieces that resonate with timeless space. A reception for the artist will be held on August 6\, 4-6pm at Kaatsbaan Cultural Part Studio Building Gallery in conjunction with the outdoor Sculpture Exhibition Reception where Young also has an installation: remains – an epic artwork incorporating the poetry of Jane Hirshfield. \n“Her wall works\, an amalgam of resonant materials nearly Shaker-like in their austerity and beauty\, owe their spiritual reach to the horsehair and muted metal she makes use of.” — JONATHAN GOODMAN \n  Save

SUMMARY:Kaatsbaan Outdoor Sculpture Park
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 6\, 2022\, 4-6pm\, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park will host a public reception and artist walk to celebrate the 2022 outdoor sculpture exhibition. This is the second year that contemporary sculpture has been installed at Kaatsbaan for the Summer Festival season. Curated by Hilary Greene\, the artworks complement the ongoing dance\, music\, poetry\, and culinary arts summer programming. This year’s participating artists are: Emil Alzamora\, Stuart Farmery\, Tristan Fitch\, Jared Handelsman\, Kenichi Hiratsuka\, Lowell Miller\, Portia Munson\, Shelley Parriott\, Eileen M. Power\, Gregory Steel\, Christina Tenaglia\, and Millicent Young.\nThe sculpture exhibition originated in 2021 in response to the Pandemic as Kaatsbaan moved its events outdoors so both artists and audience could safely experience Kaatsbaan’s world class dance and music performances. Exhibition curator Hilary Greene envisioned the artworks as multi- dimensional participants that activate and enhance the lush historic grounds.\nFocusing on mid-career sculptors\, Ms. Greene selected artworks that best embodied the spirit and flow of the Hudson Valley’s unique landscape and the joy of rhythm and movement. From hand-carved monuments and wire-bound stones\, to vibrant wooden forms and sheer colorful columns\, from a glowing silk banner and poetic etched glass\, to cast bronze figures and dancing ladders\, the outdoor sculpture exhibition at Kaatsbaan displays a powerful vocabulary and far-reaching range of contemporary art. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Meditative Art Experience
DESCRIPTION:MEDITATIVE ART EXPERIENCE\nEvent Date: August 6\, 2022\nEvent Time: 12pm – 1pm \nAdmission is Free\, but seating is limited. Must register here to participate. \nStrata Gallery presents a meditative artmaking opportunity on Saturday\, August 6 from 12-1pm. A body-scan meditation will be led by two artists and students within the exhibition space. \nRaimy Engel (she/her) and Tess Bourbeau (they/them) are both attending the graduate art therapy program at Southwestern College and New Earth Institute. They are passionate about the role art can take in developing self-attunement\, empathy\, and mental health care. \nThe intention of this body-scan and art experiential is to allow for the exploration of the body outside of physical categories. Self-image may not always be related to looks/body shape and may include knowledge of bodily history and boundaries. “The goal is to promote exploration of the unseen relationship we have with our bodies\,” the two facilitators state. \nAttendees will be guided through a body-scan meditation that pauses occasionally for responsive artmaking. All supplies will be provided. Tess and Raimy would like to acknowledge that a body-scan can be an intense experience for those with bodily trauma and encourage any interested participants to attune to their nervous system and engage with this meditation in a way that feels safe. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday. For more information about Strata Gallery and its current or future exhibits\, please visit the Strata Gallery website and Instagram. \nRaimy Engel (she/her) is an artist who is currently working towards my MA in Art Therapy and Counseling at Southwestern College and New Earth Institute here in Santa Fe. She is passionate about the impact art can have on the understanding of ourselves and\, consequently\, others. \nTess Bourbeau (they/them) is a multi-media artist pursuing a Master’s in Art Therapy and Counseling at Southwestern College. They explore themes of radical authenticity and empathy in my creative and academic work. \nMASKS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE \n  Save

SUMMARY:I Dream in Color
DESCRIPTION:Artist Kurt Erickson’s dynamic\, colorful abstractions explore the bursts of radiance that come from the in-between spaces of our dreams. While awake\, colors are used to represent everything from mourning and love to excitement or rage. When noticing a color while dreaming\, the interpretation of that dream could be aided by what colors shine through. \nWhile working in his studio\, Kurt reverts back to a childlike creative headspace\, letting intuition take hold. His subconscious mind moves to the in-between spaces and glimpses light and darkness. This body of work\, like most of his work\, is accessible to anyone and is aimed at the child inside all of us. Kurt’s paintings encourage minds to wander\, referred to as dreams in the sense that they are open to interpretation. He hopes to make connections with each viewer and start a unique conversation between painting and audience. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Notes from my backyard
DESCRIPTION:Sequestered by COVID-19\, A-M Petersons found her backyard a refuge for discovery and contemplation – inspiring subtle\, beautiful evocations of lichen “ghosts”.  \nA-M Petersons has a relationship with her garden\, with the last two years cementing their bond. When home was a refuge\, fortress\, and jail\, the garden stepped up and led her to a new place – a place that already existed with a view she had previously ignored. For A-M\, the beams of the pergola became meditation mantras. She was led to look up\, consider the branches of the apple tree\, and examine the old retaining wall that holds the roots of a grapevine. Each examined surface offered the usual splotches and shadows of garden “ghosts”. During the days spent isolated in the garden\, scanning the beams of the pergola\, the walls\, the concrete wall\, A-M was drawn into the gray. The ghosts she saw breathed life. \nThis exhibition is a simple salute and exploration of the lichen “ghosts” that live vibrantly in her garden. \n  Save

SUMMARY:The Other Washington State
DESCRIPTION:Spotlighting industrial landscapes of eastern Washington\, artist Angshuman Sarkar‘s exhibition The Other Washington State is an exploration and tribute of the American landscape that is often less seen and infrequently talked about. \nWashington state is divided by the mountains into two parts\, splitting the economy\, occupations\, and lifestyles with it. The division is stark and is often excluded from the conversations about the state. Eastern Washington\, being away from the economic hubs and ports of the West side has developed differently. Much of the economics of this part relies on the Columbia river and the Grand Coulee Dam. In the industrial and agrarian landscapes of eastern Washington\, we can see many of the building blocks of the country – the ecosystem of human endeavor\, engineering ingenuity\, hard work and infrastructure. This series explores the not so often seen landscapes of the region. \n  Save
