SUMMARY:Art Talk Live: Yasuo Kuniyoshi’s Last Act
DESCRIPTION:Yasuo Kuniyoshi once proclaimed that “an artist’s drawings are his first words.” Having emigrated from Japan to the United States at the age of 16\, Kuniyoshi relied upon drawing as his most expressive medium. Through drawing\, he translated the anxiety\, disillusionment\, and alienation faced by Japanese émigrés in the aftermath of World War II into a uniquely personal and dynamic American modernist style. \nLed by:\nElisa Germán\, Emily Rauh Pulitzer Curatorial Fellow in Contemporary Drawings\, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art \nThis talk is part of a series inspired by ReFrame\, a museum-wide initiative to reimagine the function\, role\, and future of the university art museum. These talks examine difficult histories\, foreground untold stories\, and experiment with new approaches to the collections of the Harvard Art Museums\, reflecting the concerns of our world today. \nThis talk will take place online via Zoom. The event is free and open to all\, but registration is required. To register\, please complete this online form. \nPlease read these instructions on how to join a meeting on Zoom. For general questions about Art Talks\, email am_register@harvard.edu. \nArt Talks Live are presented via Zoom every other Tuesday at 12:30pm (ET) and offer an up-close look at works from our collections with our team of curators\, conservators\, fellows\, and graduate students. \nThe Harvard Art Museums are committed to accessibility for all visitors. For anyone requiring accessibility accommodations for our programs\, please contact us at am_register@harvard.edu at least 48 hours in advance. \nThe Harvard Art Museums are open to the public. Reservations are available but not required and can be made up to three weeks in advance. Please see the museum visit page for more information. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Screens for Teens: Clueless
DESCRIPTION:This series of contemporary and classic films is specially curated for teenagers in and around Cambridge. The selection\, including both short and feature-length films\, is meant to provide teens with an opportunity to watch work focused explicitly on their experiences. Covering a range of topics\, emotions\, and nuances\, these free films—depending on length and scope—will be followed by conversation with faculty from the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. \nAbout today’s film:\nClueless\, 1995 (Paramount Pictures; English; 97 min.) \nJane Austen might never have imagined that her 1816 novel Emma could be turned into a fresh and satirical look at ultra-rich teenagers in a Beverly Hills high school. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne (Stacey Dash)\, both named after “great singers of the past that now do infomercials\,” are pampered upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible. But Cher\, who lives with her tough yet warm-hearted lawyer dad (Dan Hedaya) and hunky\, sensitive stepbrother (Paul Rudd)\, also has an innate urge to help those less fortunate like the two introverted teachers she brings together (“negotiating” improved grades for herself in the process) and new friend Tai (Brittany Murphy)\, who starts out a geek and ends up a Cher prodigy. Cher also possesses her own sensitive side\, and she is looking for the perfect boyfriend\, whom she ends up finding where she least expected. \nFree admission\, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Reservations may be arranged by clicking on the event on this form beginning on Thursday\, September 1\, after 10am. \nThe screening will take place in Menschel Hall\, Lower Level. Doors will open at 1:30pm. \nPlease see the museum visit page to learn about our general policies for visiting the museums. \nThe Harvard Art Museums are committed to accessibility for all visitors. In a quest to document “real migrants\,” the book instead uncovers a multiplicity of narratives that make up the African diaspora. \nA spotlight tour of contemporary artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s self-portrait in the Museum’s Fickle Mirror exhibition will follow the talk. Born in Nigeria and relocating to the United States as a teenager\, Crosby creates work that addresses the complexities of culture clash and belonging through imagery referencing her dual Nigerian and American backgrounds. \n\n\n\n\nPresented in collaboration with Shore Lit. \n\n\n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Julie England\, New Terrain
DESCRIPTION:Julie England\, New Terrain\nSeptember 6 – September 24\nReception: September 9\, 5-7pm\nStrata Gallery presents established member solo exhibition New Terrain by Texas based artist\, Julie England. The exhibition opens September 6\, 2022 and is on view until September 24\, 2022. There is a public reception with the artist on Friday\, September 9\, 5:00-7:00pm. \nJulie’s paintings\, inspired by the outdoors\, especially arid terrain\, will be shown at Strata Gallery\, Santa Fe in September. England paints earth tones and saturated color with a sense of place\, imagination and yearning. She invites the viewer to travel through topology towards the horizon\, where earth melds with sky. \nOn one wall of Strata Gallery hang paintings with aerial perspective over Georgia O’Keeffe’s New Mexico properties. Discussions with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe\, NM about photographing her sites led to this body of work. O’Keeffe’s Clouds Above Sky series from 1965\, where land observed through the airplane window was a most original pictorial idea\, is now commonplace. An aerial view enhances the viewer’s awareness of space and triggers one to immediately enter the foreground. \nThe opposing wall at Strata Gallery holds landscape paintings featuring color and mark-making that convey energy from nature. Paint gestures capture undulating surfaces enabling a sense of movement while standing still. \nJulie England is an oil painter who grew up in Wisconsin\, Florida and Texas.  Her artwork is exhibited in Texas and across the U.S. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock\, TX. After a career in the semiconductor industry\, England earned an Associates of Arts degree in 2015 at Brookhaven College\, Farmers Branch\, Texas. In 2018 she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree from Southern Methodist University\, Dallas\, Texas. Julie lives and works in the Dallas\, TX. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. For more information about Strata Gallery\, the current exhibit\, and the future schedule of events\, please visit the Strata Gallery website and Instagram. \nMasks required. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Hank Feely - According to Gongsun Long (Recent Paintings)
DESCRIPTION:Gongsun Long was a Chinese philosopher who lived from 320 to 250 BC during the Zhou dynasty. He was known for postulating paradoxes including his most famous: “White horses are not horses.” He believed that pure logic may lead to absurd conclusions. Hank Feeley believes that the world we currently live in and his paintings pretty much bear out the truth of Mr. Long. \nThis show includes some of Feeley’s typical non sequitur paradoxical works but it also includes some different work that came as the result of the isolation of the pandemic. To amuse himself during the pandemic he experimented with different styles\, contents and mediums. Some of these finished works are in the show as well as some of the preliminary sketches and drawings leading to them. Also in the show are amusing collage portraits that he did\, again\, on a pandemic fueled whim. \nAll in all\, it’s work like this that caused Billy Collins to write:\n“If Hank Feeley were not so strikingly original\, I would say that he stands at the intersection of Magritte and Marvel Comics\, but as it is\, he has his own way of disorienting the viewer so we can see again\, now with our perception refreshed.” \n  Save

SUMMARY:Michael Rosenfeld Gallery at The Armory Show 2022
DESCRIPTION:Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is pleased to be participating in The Armory Show 2022 with a group exhibition encapsulating the gallery’s exciting and diverse program. Featuring an interdisciplinary selection of works dating from the interwar period through the present\, our presentation offers a showcase of artists and movements central to the history of American art in the 20th and 21st centuries. The focus of the presentation is a wall-sized masterpiece by gallery artist William T. Williams (b.1942)\, Sister Puss (1968)\, which correlates to the artist’s solo exhibition at the gallery’s 19th Street space\, William T. Williams: Tension to the Edge (September 8–November 5\, 2022). Additional highlights include standout works by Benny Andrews (1930–2006)\, Robert Colescott (1925–2009)\, Joseph Cornell (1903–1972)\, and Agnes Pelton (1881–1961). \nWilliams’ Sister Puss (titled after a family member’s nickname that references the fairytale character Puss in Boots) belongs to a body of work that constitutes the genesis of the artist’s “diamond-in-a-box” motif\, which became a formal and thematic continuum in his oeuvre. Williams has referred to this form as a “stabilizing force” that structures the chaos he sought to convey within these works as a reflection of the tumultuous conditions of the era. Such works embody “place as a specific type of poetry\,” in Williams’ words\, offering a composite of experiences and memories both personal and collective. \nWilliams’ historic painting will be complemented by a range of masterworks by artists consistently featured in gallery programming\, including a standout collage painting from the same period by Benny Andrews. Liberty #6 (Study for Trash) (1971) is one of several finished paintings the artist referred to as a “study” for his monumental\, multi-panel work Trash\, also executed in 1971 and now in the collection of The Studio Museum in Harlem. Trash is the second work in Andrews’ Bicentennial Series (1969–1976)\, a cycle of six monumental paintings that convey\, as the artist stated\, “a Black artist’s expression of …his dreams\, experiences\, and hopes along with the despair\, anger\, and depression [felt in response] to so many other Americans’ actions.” \nCarrying the torch of 20th-century figurative expressionism with a clear political message is Robert Colescott’s 1994 painting\, Shakespeare’s Africans (Suicide\, Tragedy). Working in a distinct style characterized by cartoonish figuration\, gestural brushwork\, and dissonant color\, Colescott’s satirical paintings contain razor-sharp critiques of American life and the Western cultural canon\, often addressing the intertwined themes of race\, sex\, and class. Here the artist skewers the racism embedded in the Bard’s portrayal of Black figures through two of his best-known characters of African descent\, Othello and Cleopatra\, both of whom are fated to die by suicide in his plays. \nA theatrical reimagining of a major artifact of European culture is also the basis for another highlight of the presentation\, Joseph Cornell’s box construction Flemish Princess (c.1950). The diorama is exemplary of the artist’s surrealist assemblages\, which juxtapose an array of symbolically loaded objects in arrangements that reflect his myriad interests\, from astronomy and space exploration to ballet and opera. In Flemish Princess\, Cornell positions printed reproductions of a Renaissance painting\, Early Netherlandish painter Jean Hey’s portrait Suzanne de Bourbon (c.1492–93)\, behind wooden spheres resembling a child’s toy; the contents of the box are drenched in sepia tones\, heightening the sense of nostalgia for past ages\, both personal (i.e.\, childhood) and historical. \nFinally\, rounding out the gallery’s presentation is a rare example of Transcendental Painting Group artist Agnes Pelton’s abstract landscapes; these metaphysical compositions express the spiritual life of the natural world through the artist’s signature language of rhythmic forms\, brilliant colors\, and radiant light. Untitled (c.1942) was inspired by the stark yet elegant vista of the California desert (where Pelton lived and worked for nearly thirty years)\, particularly the purple form in the left half of the composition\, which resembles a seed pod of the Japanese magnolia tree. Though not strictly religious\, the artist practiced meditation and was deeply inspired by Agni Yoga\, Buddhism\, Theosophy\, and the theories of Carl Jung\, absorbing their teachings into her visionary painting practice. \nThe works discussed above are merely a sampling from the expansive checklist of works available at Booth 317. Here follows a complete list of the artists included in the gallery’s presentation: \nCharles Alston\, Benny Andrews\, Robert Arneson\, Hannelore Baron\, Richmond Barthé\, Mary Bauermeister\, William Baziotes\, Romare Bearden\, Harry Bertoia\, John Biggers\, Giorgio Cavallon\, Ed Clark\, Robert Colescott\, Joseph Cornell\, Harold Cousins\, Beauford Delaney\, Claire Falkenstein\, John Ferren\, Albert E. SUMMARY:Dorothy Frey: Studio Farm
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition dates: September 6 – October 1\, 2022 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 8\, 2022\, 5:00-8:00pm \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, September 10\,  2022\, 2pm \n  \nBowery Gallery is pleased to present “Studio Farm” by Dorothy Frey. The exhibition runs from September 6 – October 1 with a reception for the artist on Thursday\, September 8 from 5-8pm. The artist will give a talk on her work on Saturday\, September 10 at 2pm at the gallery. This is Frey’s first solo exhibition at Bowery Gallery. \nDorothy Frey is a painter who works from perception and invention\, examining sense of place at her Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania farmstead. Subject matter in her paintings stems from day-to-day living on and tending a multigenerational farm. Working onsite and in the studio\, colors develop as intuitive fusions of weather events\, seasons\, memories and various times of day. Cool tranquil shadows ground the compositions. Luminous pathways weave through the well-trodden land. Trees reach for one another creating protective arched canopies. \n “Dorothy Frey’s paintings are not the nomadic paintings of a landscape painter setting up their easel here or there long enough to complete a painting and move on. Frey is dug in. From Hans Herr\, the first Mennonite Bishop to immigrate to America in the early 1700s to her own young son (who makes an appearance in at least one of these paintings)\, this area of Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania has been cultivated and storied in her family for 10+ generations. Frey’s paintings are living participants in this persistent generational story\, laying bare their content through poetic weight found in painterly momentum and rhythms of trees; planes of grass\, sky\, and fields; and pockets of memory suspended in time as vignettes under boughs of trees.” \n-Jay Noble\, Artist\, Executive Director\, Mount Gretna School of Art \n  \nDorothy Frey also shows at Lancaster Galleries\, Lancaster\, PA. Her work has been included in shows at the Demuth Museum in Lancaster\, PA; Stein Galleries in Dayton\, OH; Art at Kings Oaks\, Newtown\, PA; Jessie Wilson Gallery\, Anderson\, IN; and Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, PA. \n  \nAbout Bowery Gallery:   \nFounded in 1969\, Bowery Gallery has been showing contemporary art of the highest quality for more than six decades. Bowery Gallery is a cooperative\, founded by artists and directed by the collective decision making of its member artists. From its beginnings\, Bowery Gallery has been a force for the expansion of art’s traditions in a venue unconstrained by commercial pressures. Named after its original location\, Bowery Gallery is now located in the heart of the Chelsea art district. \n  \nGeneral information: \nBowery Gallery \n547 West 27th Street\, Suite 508 \nNew York\, NY 10001 \n  \nHours: Tuesday-Saturday\, 11am-6pm \nAll visitors to the gallery must wear a mask. \n  \ninfo@bowerygallery.org  \n646-230-6655 \nwww.bowerygallery.org              \n  Save

SUMMARY:Katherine Sherwood\, 'Pandemic Madonnas and Other Views from the Garden'
DESCRIPTION:The George Adams Gallery is pleased to present our second exhibition of paintings by Bay Area artist Katherine Sherwood titled\, Pandemic Madonnas and Other Views from the Garden. Building on two on-going bodies of work\, her Venuses and Brain Flowers\, the exhibition will show the evolution of both series while also introducing Sherwood’s Pandemic Madonnas\, completed within the past year. Accompanying the exhibition is an extensively illustrated catalogue\, In the Garden of the Yelling Clinic\, surveying the development of all three\, ongoing bodies of work\, with scholarly essays by Ginny Treanor and Farley Gwazda\, along with a personal reflection by the artist. \nSherwood has long used her artwork to engage with concerns around disability and feminism\, by considering how both ableism and gender play a role in our understanding of art from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Herself disabled following a debilitating cerebral hemorrhage at forty-four\, in the decades since\, such concerns have only become more urgent and visible in Sherwood’s work. In these recent paintings\, she continues with her strategy of making revisionist additions to art historical images\, collaging in scans of her own brain or depicting her subjects with assistive medical devices – particularly those she uses herself. Simultaneously\, she has deepened her exploration of the historical precedent of female artists\, notably in a major self-portrait after an altarpiece by the 17th century Portuguese painter\, Josefa de Óbidos. While the original painting combines elements from devotional paintings and still-lives\, a hallmark of de Óbidos’s oeuvre\, Sherwood replaces the central Christ child with her own disabled body\, offering a two-fold critique: of the limitations in subject matter female painters historically faced and the liberating potential of the self-portrait. \nThe duality present in Venus (after de Óbidos) reflects two broader\, inter-related aspects of Sherwood’s work. She addresses the concept of the male gaze and preconceived notions of beauty in her Venus paintings\, modeled after classical odalisques\, while the Brain Flower series flips the script\, re-inserting the female gaze by considering the work of Renaissance female painters\, who were often limited in their subject matter to still-lives. As art historian Ginny Treanor points out in her contribution to the catalogue\, for the women whose paintings Sherwood appropriates\, the floral arrangements they painted were as much a scientific enterprise as an artistic one. Following in this tradition\, by replacing select flowers with collaged scans of her own brain; Sherwood draws a parallel between the beauty and complexity within both structures. \nAnother commonality across these series is the use of art historical reproductions as a substrate\, where Sherwood is literally working on the back of historical paintings or\, as in the case of her Pandemic Madonnas\, on the front. Working from examples of the Madonna and Child by Dürer\, Botticelli\, Raphael and others\, she directly alters the image\, adding in prosthetics\, braces\, crutches and other devices to the subjects as a commentary on the immaculate\, idealized body. Pointedly\, Sherwood intentionally models these interventions after antiquated\, outdated medical devices\, further drawing attention to our preconceptions around the visible markers of disability. A seated Madonna may be placed in a wheelchair\, the baby Jesus given a prosthetic limb or brace\, however the effect is not to undermine\, but rather transcend. As these paintings were intended to reveal the divine as more perfect beings\, Sherwood’s manipulations offer a more nuanced understanding of our inherent humanity. \nAs Sherwood discusses the trajectory of her work over the last ten years in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition\, she elaborates on her understanding of the “Garden” as a conceptual extension of the imaginary “Yelling Clinic:” a space for healing that has served as the inspiration for her paintings since 2010. The Yelling Clinic is also a disability collective Sherwood co-founded in 2008\, which among its goals\, combines art and activism to move conversations around disability outside a medical context. For Sherwood\, the interventions and re-contextualizing she manifests within her paintings are in themselves acts of healing and therefore an extension of her activism. Her “Garden” is home to the Brain Flowers\, where the blooms she paints are equally reminders of mortality and objects of beauty in their own right. \n  Save

Rognli\, who hails from the Indigenous Sámi people\, draws on his childhood experiences among shamans steeped in the ancient animist folk religion. Through film\, photography\, sculpture\, and performance\, the artist explores his passionate bond with the organic world. With this immersive experience\, Rognli invites us all on a mythological journey into deep forests and across misty waterways—where surreal phenomena guide the viewer through the unknown.\nGjert Rognli was selected by NOoSPHERE Arts’ international jury as our 2021 Residency Award winner after careful consideration of hundreds of applications originating from forty-seven countries. We are very pleased to finally welcome him onboard Mothership NYC after a long\, pandemic-induced delay. For more details about Rognli’s residency project\, his inspirations\, and how he came to be an artist\, we invite you to read this interview announcing last year’s NOoSPHERE Arts Residency Award.\nFritjof Capra: As an overarching theme for WE ARE NATURE 2022\, we have selected from our very own favorite Scholar-in-Residence’s book Patterns of Connection (2021) four essential characteristics embodied in all forms of life. According to the “systems view\,” which has recently been developed at the forefront of science\, life organizes itself in networks; and these living networks are inherently regenerative\, creative\, and intelligent.\nWE ARE NATURE: Patterns of Connection is the 3rd iteration of our annual rooftop series combining Arts\, Environmental Activism\, and Community Building @ and around Kingsland Wildflowers @ Broadway Stages. Set in a surreally beautiful nature sanctuary sprouting on top of an ExxonMobil industrial plant on the bank of Superfund site Newton Creek\, the recurring WE ARE NATURE summer series offers a combination of multiple art forms – dance\, music\, performance\, visual art\, poetry\, prose and film – addressing humanity’s place on Earth in aims of engaging a diverse audience in environmental efforts through art.\n“We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So\, when we say that we have lost our connection to nature\, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.” —Andy Goldsworthy\nWE ARE NATURE 2022 is sponsored\, in part\, by the National Endowment for the Arts and also the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs\, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). SUMMARY:Artist talks: August/September exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the August-September featured artists and their artwork at this informal artist talk.\nArtists include: Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, and Carol Meese.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Artist books have been the main focus of McCarney’s art practice since 1980. He feels the book is the perfect form to combine his academic background in photography and design with his love for the “corporeality of craft and philosophic possibilities of sculpture.” He states\, “The interpretive space of the book and the interaction of a reader engage my interest in communication as process and form.”\n\nMcCarney’s decision to make artists books is for both practical and formal reasons: they are easy to transport\, access\, and share; their history is socially and culturally saturated; and everyone has some relationship with a book. According to McCarney\, “a book’s materiality and proximity to the reader offer a unique experience for expressing ideas quietly and with purpose.”\n\nMargaret Buchanan’s oil paintings will be displayed in her exhibition\, The Quiet. For Buchanan\, painting is “a place of agitation and excitement mixed with utter calm and joy.” Buchanan responds to composition\, light\, color\, space\, and texture\, and how those elements orchestrate our everyday moments. Her paintings suggest the presence of figures that do not appear in the composition\, referenced by a space where “someone is about to enter or has just left\, the liminal spaces between people\, the aftermath of human activity.” The Quiet articulates a dynamic space\, one that negotiates many states of being to create a sense of place.\n\nA book artist\, painter\, and designer\, Margaret Buchanan divides her working life between painting and her graphic design business\, Buchanan Design. She studied graphic design and painting at Virginia Commonwealth University\, in Richmond\, Virginia\, where she earned a BFA with honors.\n\nThe mystery of unspoken words\, unconscious thoughts\, and unheard prayers emerge in Carol Meese’s exhibition of paintings\, Prayer Books. Meese’s previous career in psychology provides her with an “understanding of what motivates others\,” how to relate on an emotional level\, and of the importance of the subconscious and unconscious helping (her) to communicate on a subliminal level. Saying things that have no words.”\n\nDuring our pandemic time was spent reading and thinking about solitude. Buried in these paintings are words from Theodore Rilke’s poem “Solitude.” and personal prayers. A pentimento effect is created with paint\, plaster\, ink and graphite. Thoughts about solitude are inscribed then obscured as if by smoke or fog or ignored thoughts or speech. The meaning is obscured\, left to the viewer to complete.\n\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, August 27\, 2pm\nExhibition Dates: August 26-September 17\, 2022 \n\n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: August/September 2022 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Artspace presents four solo exhibitions which revolve around communication with the viewer. The opening reception\, scheduled for Friday\, August 26\, 2022\, 6-9pm\, features artwork by Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, Carol Meese and Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman. Exhibition dates are August 26 – September 17\, 2022.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Flynn-Chapman is a photographer and art historian. She began taking photographs to illustrate her doctoral thesis on architecture while at Northwestern University. She found she had a natural affinity for composition saying\, “the buildings told me what to shoot.” These photos communicate each building’s presence and their history with the viewer. Her architectural photos became the cornerstone of Flynn-Chapman’s portfolio which expanded to include locations as well as people from around the world.\n\nA long time member of Artspace\, Flynn-Chapman has recently been recognized for her contributions to the gallery with the naming of our multi-purpose space in her honor. SUMMARY:Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception and meet the artist:\nFriday\, August 26\, 5–7pm\nExhibition continues through September 30\, 2022 \nJHB Gallery is delighted to present its second exhibition of work by artist Amanda Means at Jetsam Studio\, Southampton\, Long Island. Following the artist’s 2021 presentation at the same venue\, this year’s exhibition will focus on examples of Means’ iconic Light Bulb works—including new digital lightbulbs—alongside Abstractions produced using the artist’s characteristic innovative darkroom processes. \nFor over forty years\, Amanda Means has created a body of work that has pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium with her celebrated Leaf\, Flower\, Water Glass\, Light Bulb\, and Abstraction series. Means has been a darkroom innovator throughout her career: adapting a 19th century camera for use as an enlarger\, photographing objects without the use of negatives\, working with a large-format Polaroid camera\, and creating a series of remarkable abstracts working only with light and photographic materials. The artist’s darkroom alchemy was cited by the Guggenheim Foundation in awarding Means their prestigious Fellowship in 2017 for her contribution to contemporary photography. \nOur exhibition will include examples from all phases of the artist’s career. Alongside key works from Means’ ongoing series in which the materials and chemistry of the darkroom are masterfully manipulated to create sumptuous Abstractions\, we will also be debuting new works from the artist’s Light Bulb series in archival pigment prints. \nAmanda Means has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad\, and in 2021\, was honored with a career retrospective at University Art Gallery\, University of Massachusetts\, Dartmouth. The artist’s work is included in many public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Nicola Erni Collection\, Switzerland; and National Museum of Photography\, Film and Television\, Bradford\, England. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Julia C. Martin\, Roots
DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY \nJulia C. Martin\, Roots\nAugust 23 – September 3rd\nReception: Friday\, August 26th\, 5-7PM \nStrata Gallery presents an Emerging Member solo exhibition\, Roots by Arizona based artist Julia C. Martin. The exhibition opens August 23rd\, with a special reception on August 26th from 5-7pm. \nJulia C. Martin’s work deals primarily with the topics of mortality\, ephemerality\, and time. She photographs in the land to explore these concepts. Roots will explore the body’s relationship to the earth and their tactile and intimate connection. \nMartin stated\, “I’m excited to be an Emerging Artist Member at Strata Gallery and to be a part of the Santa Fe art community. Having previously lived here\, I’ve always admired it. My work is about the relationship between the female body and the land. I’m interested in exploring how we perceive this connection and how the ephemeral nature of both the body and the land plays into the cycles of life\, death\, and rebirth. I work in a tactile manner and this exhibition will be just as much about the installation as it is about the images.” \nJulia C. Martin received her MFA in Photography from Arizona State University and her BA in Film & Photography from Montana State University. Her work has been exhibited and published nationally. She is currently based in Phoenix\, Arizona. This is her first solo show in New Mexico. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday.
