SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:In June abstract artwork takes center stage in the galleries with paintings and sculptures by John Wagoner\, John Van Zandt and Jasmine Mills. Each artist approaches their craft from different points of view and techniques providing a variety of forms and contemplation for the viewer. And there’s always a special place for landscape fine art. In the Port Gallery\, Adam Reinhard brings the Blue Ridge Mountains to our doorstep.  Plus\, there’s the mix\, the monthly All Media Show featuring Virginia artists. \n  \nJoin us on June 23rd from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. Parking is free. The exhibits continue through July 22nd. The event is free and open to the public. \nRecent Works by John Wagoner \nJohn Wagoner challenges the notion of what defines a painting by creating works of art that transition between painting and sculpture. The audience can examine and experience these boundaries or relationships within these works\, presented in different modalities\, and to view paint as a very fluid medium. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \nRecent Work by John Van Zandt \nJohn Van Zandt enjoys exploring with bright\, bold colors and contrasting realism with abstract images and backgrounds. He works primarily with acrylic and canvas as he appreciates the speed at which layers can be added to backgrounds. Letting no paint go to waste he explores new ways to incorporate dried paints into his pieces. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery \n  \nThe Unseen by Jasmine Mills \nAs an artist\, Jasmine Mills enjoys bringing her thoughts and ideas into the physical world and merging the Unseen into Seen. She creates abstract art based on perceptions and thoughts on overcoming demons\, healing\, societies struggles\, and cultural influences throughout her Life. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSilver Lining by Adam Reinhard \nAfter six years spent buried under the noise of Washington D.C.\, Adam Reinhard returned to the Blue Ridge Mountains where he feels that he can finally hear\, breathe\, and see again.  And there is so much to see. Reinhard is convinced that there are secret colors only to be found where those ancient crusts rise up and out of the Shenandoah valley. Working under the restraints of shifting light\, cold\, and heat has served as Reinhard’s inspiration. Whether it’s the siding of a dilapidated barn\, ribbons of water working their way down a stream bed\, or endless rows of corn in patchwork farms\, he finds that it is often the boldest strokes\, reacting to the quickly changing environment\, which portray the truth as he sees it. This exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \nJune 2023 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. There is no theme for this exhibit\, anything goes\, any medium. Call for entries is May 1\, 2023 – June 12\, 2023. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork:   Call for Entries \n  Save

SUMMARY:Timothy Schmitz & Michael Schultheis
DESCRIPTION:Winston Wächter Fine Art\, New York is pleased to announce an exhibition of mixed media artworks by Timothy Schmitz and bronze sculptures and paintings by Michael Schultheis. Timothy Schmitz’s works are meditative in nature using color gradients to draw light into the center of the pieces. Michael Schultheis’ sculptures are a graceful dialogue between two stories finding harmony in the meeting point. The luring colors and fluid motion used by both artists are a captivating display of elegance. \nTimothy Schmitz is a Minneapolis based artist who has created a process that is uniquely his own. He starts with a digital composition that is processed through different software programs. After multiple variations\, the digital image is printed and physically manipulated with materials such as emulsions and resin. The result being a seamlessly constructed object that dances on the line of painting and sculpture. Timothy Schmitz finds inspiration for his soft color palette from when he lived in Santa Fe\, New Mexico.  Each work illuminates from the inside radiating the warmth of a sunset. suffuse code 6466\, 2023 begins with a gentle violet color\, diffused across the surface of the work\, settling into a warm pink and orange hue at the bottom. The artist admires the strength found in gentleness and aims to embed that into his work. \nMichael Schultheis is a Seattle based artist. In his practice called Analytical Expressionism\, the artist uses layers of mathematical equations to demonstrate how they can be used as a lens to view and understand human connections.  By using a geometric model that he calls the SoulMate Model\, the artist explores how two people find each other and what it looks like when they start to orbit around one another.  His Venn sculptures\, act as the three dimensional rendering of the brushstrokes found in his paintings. Using the lost-wax casting process of antiquity\, he creates simple\, elegant forms based on a geometric polar curve called a limaçon. Venn Fidelities Coupling stands 8 feet tall\, cast in bronze with a slightly hammered texture which captures the sunlight within the groves. The momentous sculpture is one seamless line that forms a vertical venn diagram set on a pedestal. The middle joins together in an embrace of both circles. These works are a window into the mathematical language of geometric form that Schultheis speaks\, inviting the viewer into a world of numbers and equations. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Mabelin Castellanos: Alone With Her Head
DESCRIPTION:Mabelin Castellanos’ first solo exhibition at The Contemporary Art Modern Project\, Alone With Her Head presents precise\, intricate line work juxtaposed with bright fabrics on bare-bones muslin quirky meditations on fleeting moments that capture the artist’s attention during her time spent people-watching. \n“This exhibition explores complicated topics such as aging as a woman and having to rediscover or redefine what one’s ‘prime’ looks like\, through a minimalist lens. It’s almost a subversion of what processing big\, difficult emotions can look like to others\,” said Maria Gabriela Di GIammarco\, the exhibition’s curator. \nThe exhibition will be open to the public in our Miami gallery beginning June 3 and will run through July 29. The gallery will be hosting an opening reception on Saturday\, June 3\, 2023 from 3–6PM. \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT MABELIN CASTELLANOS (b. 1958\, Cuban) \n  \nMabelin Castellanos is a Cuban fiber artist based in Miami. Her delicate interpretations of quotidian life as seen from her window are often made from scrap fabrics\, with both her story as an artist and fiber paintings acting as conduits for agency—namely\, Castellanos’ own. Her practice is marked by self-reflection\, pleasant observations\, and a tender reconstructing of identity and paths to personal development through moments of strife and rebirth. Mabela’s body of work can be interpreted as a series of textile snapshots\, subverting the nature of textile work by treating her sewing machine as an instrument for photography\, while honoring the fleeting beauty in moments most would describe as trivial. \n  \n  \nABOUT THE CONTEMPORARY ART MODERN PROJECT \nThe Contemporary Art Modern Project exists at the intersection of higher thought and aesthetics\, turning the classic gallery model on its head in principle and practice. Founded by Melanie Prapopoulos\, The CAMP’s approach to curation and criticism is equal parts academic and experimental\, resulting in a robust exhibition program that spotlights a range of experiences and media in roster and staff. Coupled with a deep seated aversion to artist exploitation and an insistence on nurturing the relationship between artist\, collector and gallery patron\, The Contemporary Art Modern Project’s reactionary approach is intentional\, designed to disrupt the exploitative norms of the art industry and safeguard the relationship between artistic expression and appreciation. \n  \nTHE CAMP GALLERY MIAMI is located in North Miami at 791 NE 125 St.\, Miami FL 33161. The gallery is open Wednesday–Saturday\, from 11 AM to 5 PM. Private tours can be scheduled by emailing hello@thecampgallery.com or calling (786) 953-8807. \n\n\n  Save

SUMMARY:West Coast Women of Abstract Expressionism
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nBERRY CAMPBELL PRESENTS: WEST COAST WOMEN OF ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM \nNEW YORK\, NEW YORK\, June 1\, 2023—Furthering Berry Campbell’s focus on women artists working in the 1950s\, we are pleased to present West Coast Women of Abstract Expressionism\, a group exhibition featuring 24 women artists living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. After World War II\, the avant-garde art world shifted from Paris to New York\, making the downtown scene in New York the center of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Concurrent with the scene in New York\, San Francisco was its parallel on the West Coast as a bohemian enclave. Much like the few recognized women Abstract Expressionists from the East Coast\, only a handful of women artists from the West Coast have broken into the larger art world canon\, most notably Joan Brown\, Jay DeFeo\, Deborah Remington\, and Sonia Gechtoff. These women are a narrow representation of the robust and diverse community living and working on the West Coast in the 1950s. \nWhen speaking of the freedom that the Bay Area scene granted the women artists during the 1950s\, Gechtoff recalled: \nThere was none of that macho bullshit. When I came to New York I was horrified at how the female artists were being disregarded. I think it was different in San Francisco because there were no commercially viable galleries….It gave us permission to be more experimental.[1] \nGround zero for many of the West Coast women was the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA). Professors like Douglas MacAgy\, Doris (Dorr) Bothwell\, and Clyfford Still were active in the New York scene and brought fresh ideas and a renewed energy to the school. Students who passed through CSFA were Ruth Armer\, Bernice Bing\, Lilly Fenichel\, and Emiko Nakano\, among others. Another center was the University of California\, Berkeley with graduates Jay DeFeo\, Claire Falkenstein\, Zoe Longfield\, and Masako Takahashi. \nThis exhibition highlights the work of recognized artists such as Joan Brown\, Jay DeFeo\, Sonia Gechtoff\, and Deborah Remington\, while bringing to light many of the significant artists that have only recently begun to be receive much-deserved research and recognition. Artists featured are Ruth Armer\, Katherine Barieau\, Bernice Bing\, Adelie Landis Bischoff\, Pamela Boden\, Dorr Bothwell\, Joan Brown\, Marie Johnson Calloway\, Jay DeFeo\, Claire Falkenstein\, Lilly Fenichel\, Sonia Gechtoff\, Nancy Genn\, Ynez Johnson\, Zoe Longfield\, Emiko Nakano\, Irene Pattinson\, Margaret Peterson\, Sonya Rapoport\, Deborah Remington\, Frann Spencer Reynolds\, Nell Sinton\, Masako Takahashi\, and Ruth Wall. \nWest Coast Women of Abstract Expressionism opens with a reception Thursday\, June 1\, 2023\, 6 – 8 p.m. and is on view through July 1\, 2023. The exhibition is accompanied by a 46-page catalogue with an essay by Frances Lazare. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. or by appointment. For further information please call at 212.924.2178\, visit our website at www.berrycampbell.com\, or email at info@berrycampbell.com.  \nABOUT THE GALLERY \nChristine Berry and Martha Campbell opened Berry Campbell Gallery in the heart of Chelsea on the ground floor in 2013. The gallery has a fine-tuned program representing artists of post-war American painting that have been overlooked or neglected\, particularly women of Abstract Expressionism. Since its inception\, the gallery has developed a strong emphasis in research to bring to light artists overlooked due to age\, race\, gender\, or geography. This unique perspective has been increasingly recognized by curators\, collectors\, and the press. \nBerry Campbell has been included and reviewed in publications such as Architectural Digest\, Art & Antiques\, Art in America\, Artforum\, Artnet News\, Artnews\, The Brooklyn Rail\, Huffington Post\, Hyperallergic\, East Hampton Star\, The Financial Times\, Galerie Magazine\, Luxe Magazine\, The New Criterion\, the New York Times\, Vogue\, and Wall Street Journal. \nIn September 2022\, Berry Campbell moved to 524 West 26th Street. The 9\,000-square-foot gallery houses 4\,500 square feet of exhibition space\, including a skylit main gallery and four smaller galleries\, as well as two private viewing areas\, a full-sized library\, executive offices and substantial on-site storage space. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. or by appointment. For further information please call at 212.924.2178\, visit our website at www.berrycampbell.com\, or email at info@berrycampbell.com. \n[1] Sonia Gechtoff quoted in Rosemary Cartens\, “The Divine Dozen: Sonia Gechtoff’s Star Still Shines Brightly\,” June 22\, 2016. https://www.wordsandpaint.com/wildlife-best-stories/divine-dozen-sonia-gechtoff. \n  \n  Save
