SUMMARY:Eric Uhlir: Armida and Rinaldo
DESCRIPTION:Winston Wächter Fine Art\, New York is excited to announce Armida & Rinaldo\, a series of new paintings by Eric Uhlir and the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. These lush\, large-scale paintings combine references to art history\, pop culture\, and Renaissance poetry in swirling compositions that reflect the cyclical nature of human history. \nThe series is a reimagining of the legend of Armida and Rinaldo\, a 16th-century epic poem set during the First Crusade. Wildly popular at the time\, the story inspired countless Baroque artworks\, yet this tale has all but vanished from our collective memory today. As the story goes\, the sorceress Armida lures Roman soldiers with her charms to neglect their military duty. Armida falls in love with Rinaldo mid-attack\, and steals him away to her idyllic garden. In this exhibition\, Uhlir embraces the tension between figuration and gestural abstraction to explore age-old themes of love and duty through a modern lens. \nIn Uhlir’s nuanced exploration\, Armida serves as a dynamic symbol of love’s complex power and the delicate balance of identity\, while Rinaldo embodies the desire to balance a personal sense of duty amid societal pressures. Uhlir adopts the grand scale of history painting\, while drawing inspiration from a wide array of visual material including pop culture\, gay erotica\, images of 1960s biker culture\, and art historical canons. Looking at Eric Uhlir’s work is like flipping through pulp magazines and art history books. Images blur together on the edge of expressive abstraction\, where a chaotic landscape can evoke both a literal battlefield and the conflicting emotions of inner tumult. \nThese paintings reward close looking\, inviting viewers to find their own narratives among the compositions\, where figures emerge amid a bucolic palette of blues\, pinks\, and greens. The lavish scene in the triptych\, Beyond the point we know as the world’s end depicts characters in repose\, set in a sort of hedonistic Garden of Eden. The images in the triptych panels don’t quite match up\, like the idea of an idyllic past that one yearns to return to\, but that might not have ever really existed. In drawing from materials throughout history\, Uhlir considers the spiraling repetition of human history\, and its destiny to continually repeat itself. By positioning age-old characters in today’s world\, Armida & Rinaldo explores themes of identity\, conflict\, and desire\, and boldly asserts the power of painting as storytelling to convey human experience. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Seeing What Happens Monotypes by Arlene Farenci
DESCRIPTION:Tu e s d a y  M a y  7 t h  –  S a t u r d a y  M a y  2 5 t h \, 2 0 2 4 \nO p e n i n g  R e c e p t i o n : T h u r s d a y  M a y  9 t h \, 6  –  8  P M \n  \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of  SEEING WHAT HAPPENS\, an immersive exhibition of monotypes by Arlene Farenci\, on view from Tuesday\, May 7th through Saturday\, May 25th\, 2024. A reception \nfor the artist will be held on Thursday\, May 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nThe title of the show\, SEEING WHAT HAPPENS\, refers to Arlene’s embrace of a symbiotic relationship \nbetween spontaneous painting and the unpredictability of monotype printmaking. She paints with ink onto \na plexiglass plate using an array of tools—brushes\, sponges\, rollers\, and spatulas—pushing and carving out \nlayers of color in a playful\, sometimes whimsical way. The plate is then put through a press which reveals marks \nand textures that are inherently unique to the monotype process. The show is comprised of works created from \n2021 to 2023. \nArlene earned her BS in Fine Arts at CUNY Hunter College. She received additional printmaking education at \nthe Robert Blackburn Workshop\, the Manhattan Graphics Center\, and workshops in monotype printmaking \nwith master printers Anthony Kirk and Michael Costello. Her work has been recognized in numerous group \nexhibitions\, including the BWAC Print 2021 exhibition at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition\, where \nshe earned the Best of Show Silver Medal\, and the 10th Annual Juried Summer Exhibition at Greenwich Art \nSociety in Greenwich\, Conn.\, where she was honored with the Sonja Gerquest Memorial Award. Her work \nhas been showcased in exhibitions at the Blue Mountain Gallery\, Prince Street Gallery and Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea. \nwww.arlenefarenci.com \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Peter Anton: Just Desserts
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 9\, from 6-8 p.m. for the Opening Reception of Peter Anton: Just Desserts! \nThis whimsical exhibition of Peter Anton’s outsized\, hyper-realistic sculptures of sweets will include ice cream cones\, cakes and confections. Anton has experimented with various methods\, including wood\, metal\, plaster\, resin\, and oil and acrylic paints to achieve the physicality of his monumental desserts. He chooses subjects that encourage people to think about their own relationship to food\, and the memories and nostalgia that these childhood favorites conjure. The reception – featuring appropriately sugary treats in addition to our usual array of finger foods – will take place in the Dolan School of Business Event Hall. Visitors will be welcome to dash across to the Quick Center for the Arts to view the exhibition in the Walsh Gallery! \nPeter Anton\, Regal Selection\, 2023 mixed media. ©2023 Peter Anton \n  Save

SUMMARY:Monica Bernier: City Views
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: April 23 – May 18\, 2024 \nOpening Reception: Thurs\, April 25\, 2024\, 5PM-8PM \nGallery Hours: Tues – Sat 11AM-6PM \n                                                  \nBowery Gallery presents the recent work of Monica Bernier in a series of paintings of New York City that are all deeply engaged with architectural space and color. Largely they look at the artist’s native home and are all keenly aware of the structures that surround us in that environment.  Often the compositions are conceived of from vantage points on elevated structures like the Metro North platform in Harlem or from Bernier’s eighth floor studio window. From her travels\, she has painted rooftop views of Frida Kahlo’s and Diego Rivera’s studios in Mexico City with striking opposing views.  \n  \nFor further information and images of the works in the exhibition\, please visit www.bowerygallery.org.   \nFor additional images and information\, visit the artist’s website: www.monicabernier.com.  \nContact: 646-230-6655  •  info@bowerygallery.org \n  \nImage: Monica Bernier\, Harlem 125th St. Metro N Platform\, 2020\, 16 in. x 20 in. \n  Save

SUMMARY:The Best New Work
DESCRIPTION:Artist David Levine’s The Best New Work is designed to present canonical texts to a wider audience by performing them as personal monologues. Actors will drift through the galleries and open spaces of the Harvard Art Museums\, performing their essays as though on an endless loop. The performers’ attitude\, delivery\, affect\, and mood will shift with their location\, their audience\, and time of day. \nFirst presented by professional actors at REDCAT\, a center for contemporary art in Los Angeles\, and then at the Princeton University Art Museum and the Harvard Art Museums in 2018\, this latest iteration of The Best New Work will be performed at the Harvard Art Museums by students in Levine’s course Performing Criticism. Over two days\, students will present works by a range of writers\, from Karl Marx to Nikola Tesla to bell hooks. \nThe performance will take place in various spaces throughout the museums\, and performers will include Jai Bahri ’25\, Josh Caven ’24\, Avery Hansberger ’25\, Nkem Ogbuefi ’24\, Inseo Yeo ’26\, and Rachael Rosko MIT ’24. \nPerformers will be speaking aloud to themselves or to whoever might be nearby as they move through the museums. Guests are welcome to listen to and wander with the student performers as they explore the museums through their chosen text. \nAdditional details about the course and the texts being performed are available at the information desk in the courtyard.

\nThe performance will take place in various spaces throughout the museums\, and performers will include Ja Bahri ’25\, Josh Caven ’24\, Avery Hansberger ’25\, Nkem Ogbuefi ’24\, Inseo Yeo ’26\, and Rachael Rosko MIT ’24. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Twe Vaa
DESCRIPTION:James Cohan is pleased to present Twe Vaa\, an exhibition of mixed media paintings by Kenyan artist Kaloki\nNyamai\, on view from March 28 through May 4\, 2024\, at 48 Walker Street. This marks the artist’s New York\ndebut and first solo exhibition with the gallery. \nTwe Vaa means “We are here” in the artist’s ancestral language of Kikamba. The phrase signifies a declaration of presence\, a reclamation of a collective agency. Nyamai questions where it is that society has landed in turbulent times. In the ten intricately layered paintings from Nyamai’s ongoing series Dining in Chaos\, he draws inspiration from life in Nairobi\, weaving collective memories that emerge and recede from legibility. His paintings are composites of multiple canvases and materials\, literally stitching together the fabric of a community scarred by the legacy of colonization. In each work\, Nyamai juxtaposes news accounts of political unrest with depictions of people at leisure\, allowing multiple narratives to unfold simultaneously. He photo-transfers newsprint and images capturing pivotal and often violent moments in Kenyan history and other parts of Africa directly onto the surface of his paintings; binding the past and the present. These figures fade in and out of view\, much like a memory\, revealing themselves\nthrough layers of paper and paint. \nHis interest lies in generating dichotomous worlds\, where play and moments of respite can take shape even in the midst of chaos. Silhouetted figures are rendered mid-action\, engaged in everyday communal activities–dancing\, swimming\, embracing\, and gathering for a meal. They are illuminated in vivid shades of color\, materializing from a mixture of dense acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, and burnt rubber yarn. The artist suggests\, “We started from where we began” as a framework for reading his paintings\, recalling the cyclical nature of history.\nUltimately\, Nyamai’s paintings act as tokens of remembrance\, emphasizing that our present is inextricably\nlinked to our shared past. We bear witness to post-election protests in the 1960s and 70s\, when Kenya had just\noverthrown British colonial rule and was attempting to regain its cultural footing. In the artist’s words: “We are\nhere now; we have arrived. How do we move on from here?” \nKaloki Nyamai (b. 1985\, Kitui\, Kenya) pursued formal training at the BiFa Institute of Fine Arts in Nairobi\,\nKenya. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at numerous international venues including; Galerie Barbara\nThumm in Berlin\, Germany\, Septieme Gallery\, Paris\, France\, Circle Art Gallery\, Nairobi\, Kenya\, Kuona Trust Art Centre\, Nairobi\, Kenya and Oriel Plas Glyn Y Weddw Gallery\, Wales\, UK. His work is in the public collection of the Dallas Museum of Art\, Dallas\, Texas and SAFFCA (Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art)\, Brussels\, Belgium. Nyamai was one of four artists included in the Kenyan Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022)\, and in 2023\, he debuted Dining in Chaos (2023)\, a monumental triptych at Art Basel Unlimited. He launched Kamene Art Residency in 2023\, with a focus on artistic growth and cross-cultural collaboration in the heart of Nairobi. \nFor inquiries regarding Kaloki Nyamai\, please contact Audrée Anid at aanid@jamescohan.com or 212.714.9500. \nFor press inquiries\, please contact Sarah Stengel at sstengel@jamescohan.com or 212.714.9500. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Materials Lab Workshop: Modern Relics with Artist Duo MOSH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop with artist duo Suzanne Moseley & Adrienne Shishko (MOSH) to create your own small 3D sculptures using beeswax and upcycled containers and other materials. The artists will talk about the work they do to bring awareness to our individual waste streams and their impact on the environment. They’ll also share how the lessons they have learned from their collaboration can be applied to solving environmental issues together. Planned around Earth Day and to coincide with Harvard’s university-wide ARTS FIRST Festival\, the workshop is an opportunity for us to consider how the topic of our waste streams will define this time period to future generations\, and how we can all contribute to global environmental challenges through a more creative engagement with all that we consume. \nMaterials are included in the fee\, but if you wish\, you may also bring one or two containers from your own personal waste stream\, such as plastic bottles\, aluminum soda cans\, and detergent or milk containers. These vessels will be the starting point for creating your own “modern relic.” \nThe hands-on session will take place in the Materials Lab on the Lower Level. \n$15 materials fee. Registration is required and space is limited; registration will open on this form\, beginning on Thursday\, April 18\, at 10am. Materials fee must be paid to confirm registration. Minimum age of 14; no previous experience required. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Janet Sawyer's "Lost Trees"
DESCRIPTION:The compelling theme of this exhibition is human suffering and resilience; it reflects the ongoing crisis of violence\, fear\, and ultimately\, courage as part of the human condition. There is no specific political agenda reflected in this body of work; the universal themes resonate in our troubled times\, as they have throughout history. Interwoven in this theme is the promise of hope\, born of empathy through common experience. \n  Save

SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day and the Virginia Historical Garden Week inspired us for the April programs at Art Works. The Recycle Show will be on display all month through April 20th—a perfect tribute to Earth Day.  See how artists recycle\, reuse\, upcycle and repurpose. \n  \nThen on 4th Friday\, April 26th all the exhibits at Art Works change.  Join us for the opening reception. Can’t make it on 4th Friday? No worries\, we’re open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plus\, parking is easy at the public garage on East 5th Street\, and we’ll validate your ticket. \n  \nDon’t forget to mark your calendar for the monthly Artists Meet-up hosted by RVA Thriving Artists at Benchtop Brewing and the open Figure Drawing Sessions on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at Art Works. \n  \nMake a day of it by exploring the restaurants in the area. From Basic City Beer to Continental\, Pig and Brew\, Jubilee\, Iron Clad Pizza\, and The Gold Lion there’s something for everyone. Ask about special offerings from these eateries and enjoy a delicious meal after your art adventure. \n  \n4th Friday April 26 at Art Works \n  \nOn April 26th the new exhibits open at Art Works including the Flora and Fauna All Media exhibit by local artists—Virginians love their gardens—tame and wild. And the students from the Henrico County Public Schools Center for Arts have installed their art in the main gallery with their annual senior-students’ art show. The RVA Photography Collective returns this year with another exhibit of Richmond—each photographer shoots identical locations and achieves different perspectives. And Paul Rosner gets us to dive deep into a molecular view of things with his exhibit\, Xphemera. \n  \nJoin us on April 26th 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for 4th Friday in Manchester—the opening reception. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. Parking is free.  The exhibits continue through May 18th  with the exception of the student show which ends on May 5th.  This event is free and open to the public. Parking is convenient and free. \nHenrico Center for the Arts \nSenior students of the Henrico Center for the Arts program exhibit their artwork which represents four years of study. The exhibit features a myriad of art forms and immerging perspectives. This exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. The exhibit opens on April 26th and continues through – May 5\, 2024. \n  \nCreative Journeys: RVA Photo Collective Showcase \nThe RVA Photography Collective\, a group of photographers agree on a specific area in Richmond and over a period of two weeks individually conduct photo shoots in that location. The photographers share no more than 10 photographs and provide no commentary. \n  \nThe collective artistic theme is understanding how different people choose to portray the same subject. This allows each photographer to see alternative approaches\, creative ideas\, compositional styles\, stories\, or perspectives and in doing so\, more objectively understand theirs. \n  \nThe exhibit is curated by Janneke Kotte and will be in the Centre Gallery. \n  \nXphemera by Paul Rosner \nThis exhibit featuring resin-assemblage compositions evokes the unseen aspects of existence. Paul Rosner explains: \n  \nThe extremes of the Universe are beyond our senses. Quantum particles\, infinitesimal bio-entities\, the vast unknown regions of space – we can only surmise their form and appearance. I use the medium of resin-assemblage to try and channel/shape vague intuitions into compositions that (hopefully) evoke elements of obscure origin coming into focus. Resin’s amber-like properties seem appropriate to capture and preserve these ephemeral imaginings. \n  \nThis exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \nALL MEDIA ART SHOW   Flora and Fauna \nSpring is here\, and it’s time for the annual Historic Garden Week in Virginia! From April 20th to April 27th\, Virginians across the state will be opening their historic gardens for all to enjoy. And what better way to celebrate the beauty of flora and fauna than with Art Works’ April All Media Show? \n  \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. Amy Chan will jury the show. Click here to learn more about the juror. There will be prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n  \nCall for entries is March 15th  – April 15\, 2024. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork:   Call for Entries \n  \n  \nMore Events at Art Works in April \nFigure Drawing Sessions\nJoin us for live figure drawing sessions the 1st and 3rd Sundays of April from 1 pm – 4 pm at Art Works. Hosted by RVA Thriving Artists. Click here for information. \n  \nRVA Thriving Artists Monthly Meet-up \nIt’s a meet-up. Network with other artists\, exchange ideas\, have a beverage and chill.   \nLocation: Benchtop Brewing \nApril 18th  6 pm – 7 pm. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: A Tale of Two Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Join curatorial assistant Casey Monahan to explore how two 19th-century ceramic vessels tell different stories of the United States. You can register by clicking on the event on this form\, beginning at 10am the day of the talk. \nPlease meet in the Calderwood Courtyard\, in front of the digital screens between the shop and the admissions desk. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Annual Henri Zerner Lecture: Imprints and Erasures—A New Story of Art
DESCRIPTION:In countless ways\, women have been erased from the history of art. Their exhibited works have been falsely attributed to their male peers; their once-collected paintings have been left to deteriorate in museum storerooms; and many art historical accounts have questioned women’s very ability to create “great” art. We can even track the gradual removal of women’s names from the historical record in moments of deliberate\, posthumous eradication. However\, a growing mountain of evidence demands we recognize that women artists may have always existed—and were often quite prominent in their own places and times. \nIn her lecture\, art historian Paris A. Spies-Gans will share this troubling history and present a series of recent discoveries that challenge the powerful\, gendered assumptions that continue to inflect our views of the past. By recovering the traces of women artists—the imprints they left behind—we can update essential parts of art history’s most enduring narratives. \nSpeaker:\nParis A. Spies-Gans is a historian of art with a focus on women and the politics of artistic expression. She holds a Ph.D. in history from Princeton University\, an M.A. in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art\, and an A.B. in history and literature from Harvard College. Her research has been supported by fellowships from the Harvard Society of Fellows\, the J. Paul Getty Trust\, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art\, and the Yale Center for British Art\, among other institutions. Her first book\, A Revolution on Canvas: The Rise of Women Artists in Britain and France\, 1760–1830\, was published by Yale University Press in 2022. It has won several prizes in the fields of British art history and 18th-century studies and was named one of the top art books of 2022 by The Art Newspaper and The Conversation. She is currently working on her second book\, A New Story of Art\, which will be published by Doubleday. \nThe lecture will take place in Menschel Hall\, Lower Level. Doors to the hall will open for seating at 6pm. \nLimited complimentary parking is available in the Broadway Garage\, 7 Felton Street\, Cambridge. \n  Save
