SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Catching the Tooth and Sketching a Shape
DESCRIPTION:Join curatorial research associate Susan Anderson to look at how artists working at the turn of the 20th century used dry media as a means towards abstraction. \nThis talk is offered in conjunction with the special exhibition Sketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black\, on view from September 12\, 2025 to January 18\, 2026. \nSketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black celebrates the act of drawing using familiar tools—charcoal\, chalk\, crayon\, and graphite. Each type of material has distinctive properties: charcoal can be intensely rich and velvety\, or delicately gray and suggestive\, while graphite is slippery\, shiny\, and easy to erase. Crayon is deeply black and waxy\, whereas chalk can be crumbly and diffuse. The creative manipulations of these media—smudging\, scraping\, and erasing—make them versatile tools for adding intensity\, depth\, precision\, and expression to an artist’s vision. \nLed by:\nSusan Anderson\, Curatorial Research Associate\, Division of European and American Art \nPlease check in with museum staff at the Visitor Services desk in the Calderwood Courtyard to request to join the gallery talk. Space is limited\, and talks are available on a first-come\, first-served basis; no registration is required. \n  Save

SUMMARY:ON DISPLAY HARVARD 2025
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to ON DISPLAY HARVARD 2025\, a movement installation created by Heidi Latsky Dance. It is part of ON DISPLAY GLOBAL\, a worldwide social justice initiative in which communities across the globe annually perform the work in commemoration of the United Nation’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3. \nHarvard’s Office for the Arts (OFA) Dance Program has been an ambassador of the work for the last seven years\, presenting ON DISPLAY HARVARD at accessible locations across campus as well as virtually each year. The program has built a community of partners and diverse performers to bring awareness of disability justice\, art\, and culture to Harvard’s campus and beyond. \nThis year\, ON DISPLAY HARVARD returns for the third time to the Calderwood Courtyard in the Harvard Art Museums. The program is free and open to the public. \nRegistration through the OFA is appreciated but not required. You may register here. \nThe work celebrates disability as an aspect of our individuality and as an affirmation of our humanity. Performers—a mix of Harvard students\, staff\, and community members—will create sculptural compositions of their own making\, which will slowly evolve in real time over the course of the hour. \nAudience members are invited to wander through the installation at their own pace and trajectory and view each performer up close. The work explores the tenuous and complex relationship between the viewer and the viewed\, potentially blurring the lines while claiming agency for both. \nPerformers will wear unique art pieces created by Harvard undergraduate students and will be led by Sarah Yee ’28 and Helen Hou ’28. \nSighted guides and audio description will be available throughout the duration for blind and visually impaired audiences; a pre-show offering for tactile access with description of wearable art will take place at 11:30am. The Harvard Art Museums building is accessible for visitors using wheelchairs and other mobility devices. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Exhibition Tour: Sketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth\, hour-long tour of our special exhibition Sketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black\, led by an exhibition curator. The exhibition will be on view from September 12\, 2025 through January 18\, 2026. \nSketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black celebrates the act of drawing using familiar tools—charcoal\, chalk\, crayon\, and graphite. Each material has distinctive properties: charcoal can be intensely rich and velvety\, or delicately gray and suggestive\, while graphite is slippery\, shiny\, and easy to erase. Crayon is deeply black and waxy\, whereas chalk can be crumbly and diffuse. The creative manipulations of these media—smudging\, scraping\, and erasing—make them versatile tools for adding intensity\, depth\, precision\, and expression to an artist’s vision. The exhibition includes drawings by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres\, Edgar Degas\, Georges Seurat\, John Singer Sargent\, and Odilon Redon\, alongside works by 20th- and 21st-century artists\, such as Piet Mondrian\, Lyonel Feininger\, Diego Rivera\, Richard Serra\, John Wilson\, Isabella Quintanilla\, and Toyin Ojih Odutola\, all of whom push their use of drawing media in new directions. \nPlease check in with museum staff at the Visitor Services desk in the Calderwood Courtyard to request to join the tour. Space is limited\, and talks are available on a first-come\, first-served basis; no registration is required. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: From Neon to Syringes—Conserving Charlotte Moorman’s Cello Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:A recent gift of three sculptures by American artist Charlotte Moorman (1933–1991) marks the first works by this classically trained cellist and avant-garde artist to enter the Harvard Art Museums collections. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 15\, 2025\nMembers Opening: 5:30 – 7:30 pm\nDance performance/Damaris Ferrer: 6:30 pm\nFREE for Members | $25 non-members \nRobert Rauschenberg: Real Time is part of the centennial celebration of the artist. Hosted in South Florida\, the state Rauschenberg called home from 1970 until his death in 2008\, the exhibition is funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation as part of a global museum initiative. \nKnown as an enfant terrible who radically eroded the boundaries between art and life\, Robert Rauschenberg experimented with new technologies\, collaborated with contemporary dancers and composers\, and breathed new life into printmaking. The exhibition features 27 experimental works from the NSU Art Museum collection\, Charles Atlas’s films of Rauschenberg’s collaborations with choreographer Merce Cunningham\, and rare early photographs by Rauschenberg on loan from the Fredrick R. Weisman Art Foundation. \nAs part of the opening celebration\, choreographer Damaris Ferrer will activate her work The Crossings\, a collaborative action that sets into motion the simple act of connecting to self and others. \nDamaris Ferrer is a multi-disciplinary artist\, mover\, teacher\, and choreographer whose movement language was formed through the technical foundations of classical ballet\, Graham technique\, classical Spanish Dance\, Limon technique\, Flamenco\, and world folk dances. In 2019\, she began teaching for the dance program at Nova Southeastern University\, and she has just been awarded an Artist Support grant from Broward County for her new work\, which will premiere in September 2026. \nRobert Rauschenberg’s strong conviction that engagement with art can nurture people’s sensibilities as individuals\, community members\, and citizens was key to his ethos. The centennial celebrations seek to allow audiences familiar with him and those encountering the artist for the first time to form fresh perspectives about his art-work. \nA year of global activities and exhibitions reexamines the artist through a contemporary lens\, highlighting his enduring influence on generations of artists and advocates for social progress. The centennial’s activation of the artist’s legacy promotes cross-disciplinary explorations and creates opportunities for critical dialogue. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Margaret Vega: Interstices
DESCRIPTION:November 11 – December 6\, 2025 \nOpening Reception: Thurs. Nov. 13\, 6-8 pm \n Multi-disciplinary artist Margaret Vega opens her solo show\, Interstices\, at Atlantic Gallery on November 11\, 2025. A reception featuring wine tasting by Community Wine will take place on Thursday\, November 13\, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. \n The curation pendulates between the artist’s different bodies of work to consider persistent questions around the cataloging of history and hierarchy\, recording human narratives\, and the influence of personal and cultural history. One series investigates the crayon labeled Flesh that she used as a child\, examining how color and classification shape perception\, asking the difficult question\, “Can we ever be Flesh neutral?” \n The artist is inspired by counting systems\, like the pre-colonial knot-based Inka language of Khipus and historical documentation that imposed a fixed lens based on skin color resulting in Damnatio Memoriae. Several of her pieces pose the question\, “Are We Still Counting?”. \n The found and placed artifacts in Vega’s most recent work are designed with a scale that reflects the human need to collect\, to reorganize the rhythm of nature and give meaning to the symbolic\, hierarchical cataloging of fragment and object. Simultaneously\, Vega works with the representational landscape\, “to re-connect with the cadence and order of nature while considering its overlapping relationship with time\, myth\, dreaming time or storytelling\, all comparative elements marking our fleeting impermanence”. \n Typical of Vega’s work\, these pieces are like open ended poetry. The concepts are juxtaposed in the small spaces. Vega states\, “…the Interstices that exist between thoughts\, between time periods in our life that feel like emptiness\, between the small unnoticed sliver of light and the pauses between questions as we search for answers\, between awareness and knowledge. Without these cracks and crevices in life\, movement could not exist. We would be stagnant.” Interstices will be on view through December 6. \n  Save

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Drawing Materials and Techniques in Sketch\, Shade\, Smudge
DESCRIPTION:Join an exhibition curator for a discussion about some of the drawing materials and techniques seen in works in the special exhibition Sketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black \nSketch\, Shade\, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black celebrates the act of drawing using familiar tools—charcoal\, chalk\, crayon\, and graphite. \nPlease check in with museum staff at the Visitor Services desk in the Calderwood Courtyard to request to join the gallery talk. Space is limited\, and talks are available on a first-come\, first-served basis; no registration is required. \n  Save
