SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:It’s our anniversary—20 years of 4th Friday opening-receptions and new exhibits every month\, artists’ solo shows from local artists as well as artists from all over the U.S. and the world. For our September opening we have planned a party. Tain’t Quite Jazz will be rocking us with their music. There will be refreshments\, and libations fitting for a 20th year anniversary celebration. And the new exhibits are especially curated for the occasion.  Please join us on September 22nd 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. \n  \nMeet these extraordinary artists\, Neal Gwaltney\, Amy Burczyk\, Robert Hoekman Jr.\, and Corinne Schofield. They bring a myriad of imagery\, symbolism\, organic shapes\, and a new type of poetry and prose to their exhibits. Parking is available. The exhibits continue through October 21\, 2023. This event is free and open to the public. \nDefense Mechanisms by Neal Gwaltney \nNeil Gwaltney’s paintings unveil uncertainty from one moment to the next. Visual comprehension is compromised by presenting familiar imagery in an unfamiliar way. Perspectives shift\, spatial parameters redefine\, and gender roles distort\, blurring the lines of distinction. Ambiguity and contextual fluctuations are the inspirations for his work. Gwaltney manipulates the images through a process of aggressive cropping\, unconventional angles\, and simplification of forms. Deviation from the familiar multiplies the possibilities of a single image. Experimentation with various media allows the subject matter and the surrounding space to struggle for identity within the painting. All of this has no predetermined end. Once he starts working\, he does not force any part of the process to adhere to any initial ideas. The ultimate meaning is the uncertainty of the images and the corresponding emotional responses of the viewers. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nRecent Work by Amy! \nAmy is from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and now lives in Virginia. Amy Burczyk’s exhibit spans both states. A painter\, an interior designer\, a project manager for LG Flint General Contractors\, and a mother of three—her paintings are a reaction to the transitions that life has taken her. Thick with symbolism\, the imagery invites strangers to look deep into her life story and dares viewers to relate. The paintings are whimsy and hope derived from real life strife and upheaval. She uses characters like the polar bear to identify with. Polar bears are cute\, but fierce; strong\, but on the verge of extinction. “We all walk that line\,” we want to know that we will be here forever\, but every one of us at some point is that polar bear.” This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery. \nRecent Works by Corinne Schofield \n  \nCorinne Schofield explores simple organic shapes in monochromatic tones when she compiles her colored pencil drawings. Lines divide the space which allows the organic shapes to start\, stop\, flow and fold over each other. These delicate detailed drawings will be on exhibit in the Corner Gallery. \nQuotable Person of Cultural Interest by Robert Hoekman Jr. \nRobert Hoekman Jr. is an artist who defies traditional writing conventions. After spending nearly two decades as a part-time professional nonfiction writer and editor\, Hoekman earned an advanced certificate in creative writing from the University of Pennsylvania. However\, instead of pursuing a career in traditional writing\, he pivoted to producing micro-text and displaying it on walls. He has become known as the “anti-writer of inexplicable texts” due to his unconventional approach to written communication. We are excited to showcase his unique and thought-provoking art. The exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \nALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. There are cash prizes and call-for-entries is open to all artists and all mediums.  John Pollard is the juror for this show. John Pollard is the owner and curator of Ada Gallery in Richmond\, VA. Originally from Petersburg\, VA\, John Pollard received his BFA from the University of Virginia and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.  Ada is an artist run gallery exhibiting fine art in Richmond\, VA since 2003. Specializing in emerging and mid-career artists\, Ada exhibits national and international artists each month. See more at adagallery.com. \nCall for entries is August 1 – September 11\, 2023. SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works
DESCRIPTION:Art Works presents our first installation exhibit in the main gallery. Three artists collaborate merging film\, structures\, objects from nature and water to investigate ideas and emotions intertwined in all these objects. Solo exhibits include urban and natural photography by Darin Patterson and textiles by Dawn Vass. And as always\, we host the monthly All Media Show featuring Virginia artists. \n\nJoin us on July 28th 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. Parking is free. Incipience continues through September 16th. The other exhibits continue through August 19\, 2023. This event is free and open to the public.\nIncipience by Shelia M. Gray and Ryan K. Carlson in collaboration with Oli Begley and Steven Warwick \nIncipience is a collaborative art installation that investigates the ideas and emotions around the intertwinement of natural elements\, found objects\, created materials and physicality. These artists approach this through the basis of opening up\, rooting in\, rising above\, flight\, and growth taking into consideration the inception of things and emotions. Their exhibit evokes a sense of composed unbalance\, familiar surrealism\, and curiosity of sentiment. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \nTattered\, Torn and Sewn by Dawn Vass   \nFor this exhibit Dawn Vass uses fibers\, stitching\, paint and sometimes paper to create small intricate pieces\, large art quilts\, and some figurative sculptural pieces. Vass’s work is driven by her love of texture and color\, what she can make with them and how to manipulate these elements through building layers. Whether\, painting\, sewing\, or sculpting\, the actual tactile experience is a significant driving force in her work. By tearing\, stretching\, and wrinkling\, she connects to the raw edges of the fabric or paper. When sewing\, she creates movement with the stitches; the technique becomes secondary. Her mark-making is through stitches\, either with a machine or by hand. Her work is usually abstract\, but sometimes evolves into the non-objective. She develops color relationships and prefers bright colors but can be drawn to more neutral tones if her inspiration is from nature. This exhibit is an exploration of rhythm\, repetition\, organic shapes\, and natural elements. Fabric has a long historical and cultural subtle relationship to women\, which encourages Vass to explore both in her art. This exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \nThe Natural World in an Urban Jungle by Darin Patterson \nDarin Patterson is a travel photographer based in the southeast United States. He enjoys photographing and documenting the beauty of the world. Patterson believes there is art in most things when you look at it with the correct lens and from the right point of view. Most fascinating is the juxtaposition of the natural world coexisting with the developed world. The balance between those two worlds is delicate but in this series one can see there is a way for the two competing worlds to live together. Elements from both worlds are incorporated into each of the photographs with many of those being in direct interaction with each other. \nThe exhibit is in the Skylight Gallery. \n  \nALL MEDIA SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The juror\, Julz Suder is a practicing artist and art educator originally from Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of VCU’s Art Education program where she developed knowledge of many types of art media. Julz has proudly taught art in a classroom setting for most of her career and now works in the public-school sector as a Fine Arts Instructional Specialist. In her personal art\, she explores a range of media\, but enjoys sculpting from wool using wet felting techniques and creating textural properties using her sewing machine. She enjoys the stories behind the objects people create and the magic of making something from nothing. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery. There is no theme for this exhibit\, anything goes\, any medium. Call for entries is June 1\, 2023 – July 17\, 2023. Submit your entries through our online form. SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:In June abstract artwork takes center stage in the galleries with paintings and sculptures by John Wagoner\, John Van Zandt and Jasmine Mills. Each artist approaches their craft from different points of view and techniques providing a variety of forms and contemplation for the viewer. And there’s always a special place for landscape fine art. In the Port Gallery\, Adam Reinhard brings the Blue Ridge Mountains to our doorstep.  Plus\, there’s the mix\, the monthly All Media Show featuring Virginia artists. \n  \nJoin us on June 23rd from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. Parking is free. The exhibits continue through July 22nd. The event is free and open to the public. \nRecent Works by John Wagoner \nJohn Wagoner challenges the notion of what defines a painting by creating works of art that transition between painting and sculpture. The audience can examine and experience these boundaries or relationships within these works\, presented in different modalities\, and to view paint as a very fluid medium. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \nRecent Work by John Van Zandt \nJohn Van Zandt enjoys exploring with bright\, bold colors and contrasting realism with abstract images and backgrounds. He works primarily with acrylic and canvas as he appreciates the speed at which layers can be added to backgrounds. Letting no paint go to waste he explores new ways to incorporate dried paints into his pieces. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery \n  \nThe Unseen by Jasmine Mills \nAs an artist\, Jasmine Mills enjoys bringing her thoughts and ideas into the physical world and merging the Unseen into Seen. She creates abstract art based on perceptions and thoughts on overcoming demons\, healing\, societies struggles\, and cultural influences throughout her Life. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSilver Lining by Adam Reinhard \nAfter six years spent buried under the noise of Washington D.C.\, Adam Reinhard returned to the Blue Ridge Mountains where he feels that he can finally hear\, breathe\, and see again.  And there is so much to see. Reinhard is convinced that there are secret colors only to be found where those ancient crusts rise up and out of the Shenandoah valley. Working under the restraints of shifting light\, cold\, and heat has served as Reinhard’s inspiration. Whether it’s the siding of a dilapidated barn\, ribbons of water working their way down a stream bed\, or endless rows of corn in patchwork farms\, he finds that it is often the boldest strokes\, reacting to the quickly changing environment\, which portray the truth as he sees it. This exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \nJune 2023 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. There is no theme for this exhibit\, anything goes\, any medium. SUMMARY:October – November Exhibits @ Art Works
DESCRIPTION:See 5 new exhibits and 75 working artist studios.  Visit us 11 -5pm Tuesdays – Sundays.  Admission is free and open to the public.  Exhibits by:  Tim Harper\, Lew Lott\, Central VA Artist Association\, Natalie Gates and Tom Campbell. \n  \nIn the main gallery\, Frank Kreacic’s exhibit\, Chromaludre continues. We are providing 3D glasses for Frank’s exhibit. You will need them to view this new medium. Unlike anything\, anywhere the paintings expand and burgeon before your eyes. His inspiration is movie characters\, action figures\, even Star Wars. You will encounter Spider Pit\, Dark Stairs\, Dungeon Chamber and more. And there’s the All Media Show with a Dark Art theme\, plus two solos shows by Natalie Gates and Libby Clark. \n  \n  \nChromaludre by Frank Kreacic \nFrank Kreacic describes himself as a 21st century artist. He uses technology to combine a love for science and history with comic books and film. Frank is from California and now resides in North Carolina. You can see his work on a large scale in Durham—a triptych piece which is a tribute to the spirit and future of the city. \nHis exhibit at Art Works speaks to many generations who have spent time watching TV\, going to the movies\, reading comic books\, and playing acting as superheroes. Use a pair of 3D glasses to view each painting and see what superhero\, Star Wars action figure\, or movie star pops out at you. \nThe exhibit is in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nRecent Work by Natalie Colleen Gates \nNatalie is a painter who loves buildings and architecture. She is particularly interested in the contrast between the constructed and natural worlds: how cities become landscape\, and how manmade structures exist within nature. She works in oil. \nThis exhibit will be in exhibit in the Corner Gallery. \nOf the Earth by Libby Clark \nAs a child Libby carved and painted little squirrels and other creatures from acorns and pieces of scrap wood. At nine she got her first camera. This early connection to nature made her aware of the responsibility of preserving the environment. She has photographed nature and created digital combinations that speak to communing with nature. She senses the spirits she feels in every aspect of her surroundings and has gained renewed hope for the planet. She says\, “The Earth has been here thousands of years before humans and appears self-healing.  Whether we humans survive is now our responsibility\, as a species.” This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \nDARK ART – OCTOBER 2021 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes and is open to all artists and all mediums. The theme is “dark art”. After all it is Halloween\, and a spooky exhibit seems fitting. \nCall for entries is September 27\, 2021 – October 13\, 2021. Submit your entries through our online form.
