SUMMARY:Margaret Vega: Interstices
DESCRIPTION:November 11 – December 6\, 2025 \nOpening Reception: Thurs. Nov. 13\, 6-8 pm \n Multi-disciplinary artist Margaret Vega opens her solo show\, Interstices\, at Atlantic Gallery on November 11\, 2025. A reception featuring wine tasting by Community Wine will take place on Thursday\, November 13\, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. \n The curation pendulates between the artist’s different bodies of work to consider persistent questions around the cataloging of history and hierarchy\, recording human narratives\, and the influence of personal and cultural history. One series investigates the crayon labeled Flesh that she used as a child\, examining how color and classification shape perception\, asking the difficult question\, “Can we ever be Flesh neutral?” \n The artist is inspired by counting systems\, like the pre-colonial knot-based Inka language of Khipus and historical documentation that imposed a fixed lens based on skin color resulting in Damnatio Memoriae. Several of her pieces pose the question\, “Are We Still Counting?”. \n The found and placed artifacts in Vega’s most recent work are designed with a scale that reflects the human need to collect\, to reorganize the rhythm of nature and give meaning to the symbolic\, hierarchical cataloging of fragment and object. Simultaneously\, Vega works with the representational landscape\, “to re-connect with the cadence and order of nature while considering its overlapping relationship with time\, myth\, dreaming time or storytelling\, all comparative elements marking our fleeting impermanence”. \n Typical of Vega’s work\, these pieces are like open ended poetry. The concepts are juxtaposed in the small spaces. Vega states\, “…the Interstices that exist between thoughts\, between time periods in our life that feel like emptiness\, between the small unnoticed sliver of light and the pauses between questions as we search for answers\, between awareness and knowledge. Without these cracks and crevices in life\, movement could not exist. We would be stagnant.” Interstices will be on view through December 6.

SUMMARY:Skipping Along: Arlene Farenci Paintings and Prints
DESCRIPTION:October 21st – November 8th \nOpening Receptions: \nThursday\, October 23rd\, 6 – 8 pm and Saturday\, October 25th\, 1-3 pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce Skipping Along\, a solo exhibition of new works by Arlene Farenci. This marks Farenci’s second solo show with the gallery and features a vibrant selection of abstract paintings and prints on paper\, created between 2024 and 2025. \nThe exhibition title\, Skipping Along\, reflects the playful energy that defines Farenci’s approach to mark-making. Her rhythmic brushstrokes travel across paper with a vitality that feels kinetic — gestures so expressive they seem to want to leap off the page. Working primarily with acrylics for their immediacy and ability to preserve movement\, Farenci favors oversized\, bristly brushes where each stroke has a character of their own. \nFarenci embraces the unpredictability of materials like sumi ink on xuan paper\, allowing the medium’s fluidity to guide her. In her bold carborundum prints\, texture becomes a central focus — tactile\, raw\, and imperfect. Whether working in color or in black and white\, Farenci’s work remains rooted in a deep respect for the expressive potential of materials. Skipping Along captures the essence of her evolving practice: spirited\, physical\, and joyfully unrestrained. \nArlene Farenci earned her BS in Fine Arts from CUNY Hunter College. She pursued additional printmaking studies at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop and the Manhattan Graphics Center\, as well as through intensive workshops with master printers Anthony Kirk and Michael Costello. Her work has been exhibited widely and has received numerous awards. She has shown in venues including the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC)\, Greenwich Art Society\, Duoro Print Biennial\, Silvermine Gallery\, Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts\, 14C Art Fair\, Blue Mountain Gallery\, Prince Street Gallery\, and Atlantic Gallery\, where she is a member. \nWebsite: arlenefarenci.com

An opening reception\, with many of the artists in attendance\, will be held at the gallery on Saturday\, September 13th from 3-5 pm\, with special evening hours on Thursday\, September 11th\, 6-8pm. \n\nCurator Ingrid Dinter has selected art for this exhibition from the work of 27 N.E.W. artists that depict diverse ideas related to the colloquial phrase “hive mind”. Dinter\, an art professional based in New York City\, brings her experience as a former gallery owner\, private dealer\, independent curator\, writer\, and educator\, to create an exhibit that draws inspiration from the behavior of social insects\, particularly bees\, who work together to achieve mutual goals through their cooperative communal spirit and unified sense of purpose. Hive Mind highlights the potential for synergy and innovation that emerges when individuals come together to work for a common purpose. The artists of New England Wax utilize their shared interest in beeswax\, both hot and cold\, as an artistic medium\, to create thought-provoking and unique two and three-dimensional works within a broad collective context. \n\nNew England Wax is an active organization of artists from the six New England states whose shared goals are to provide opportunities to exhibit\, to share technical information and aesthetic ideas\, to promote excellence in fine art made with wax\, to educate the general public about this medium\, to increase interest in encaustic and cold wax in the art world\, and to build community with other artists. SUMMARY:Artelibre in Atlantic Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 15 – Saturday\, August 2\, 2025\nOpening Reception: July 17\, 6 – 8 PM\nArtelibre: More than a Quarter of a Century Giving Voice to Realist Art \nIn 1999\, Galería Artelibre was born with a clear and passionate mission: to champion the value of contemporary realist art and restore it to its rightful place within the international art scene. This project\, driven by the vision and dedication of its founder\, José Enrique González\, has since become a reference platform for artists around the world who have committed themselves to a craft-based\, rigorous\, authentic\, and profoundly human form of artistic expression. \nNow\, 25 years later\, we celebrate a journey marked by perseverance\, excellence\, and the tireless promotion of figurative art. And we do so with a very special exhibition that brings a grand close to our commemorative program: New York\, the city that never sleeps\, and where art is always alive and in motion\, hosts this important milestone. A city where culture is a universal language. \nThe exhibition\, which will be held from July 15 to August 2\, 2025 at the renowned Atlantic Gallery\, brings together 120 small-format works (8×8″) created by artists from all over the world. This is a collective\, diverse\, and passionate display\, committed to quality\, emotion\, and technique — one that celebrates creativity in its purest form: honest\, direct\, and deeply moving. \nAmong the featured artists are distinguished names such as Allan Gorman (USA)\, Chris Klein (Canada)\, Aurelio Rodríguez (Spain)\, Christophe Vacher (USA\, two-time Emmy Award winner)\, Francesco Capello (Italy)\, Jan Ander Nelson (USA)\, Luis Royo (Spain)\, Mark Tennant (USA)\, and the gallery director himself\, José Enrique González\, among many others. Each of them brings a unique artistic richness that elevates this exhibition to an exceptional level. \nThe official opening will take place on July 17\, 6 – 8 PM\, at Atlantic Gallery\, and is open to all art lovers — to all those who value talent\, discipline\, and artistic expression in its most essential and profound form. \nFollowing its time in New York\, the exhibition will travel to Zaragoza and Madrid (Spain)\, thus concluding a year-long cycle of commemorative events hosted in various cities and venues. \nBecause we believe in art with soul.\nBecause we believe in the transformative power of beauty.\nAll for love\, all for art.

SUMMARY:Chicanery: A Solo Exhibition by Blair Martin Cahill
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 24th – Saturday\, July 12th\, 2025 \nOpening reception: Thursday\, June 26th\, 6:00 – 8:00pm \n\nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce Chicanery\, a solo exhibition of embroidered works by Blair Martin Cahill\, on view from June 24 through July 12\, 2025. An opening reception will be held for the artist on Thursday\, June 26\, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. \nIn Chicanery\, Cahill uses thread as a storyteller—each stitch layered with emotion\, wit\, and intention. Her work dances between the sublime and the delightfully outrageous\, always grounded in a deep respect for texture\, technique\, and the narrative power of embroidery. \nCahill holds a BFA from California Institute of the Arts and an MA in Fine Art from the University of the Arts London\, Chelsea. Her approach to fiber art reflects a lifelong engagement with color\, material\, and emotional resonance. In addition to exhibiting widely\, she has lectured at the International Sculpture Convention and the Collage Artists of America. Notably\, she has shown work at the Royal College of Art Summer Exhibition on two occasions. \nWith Chicanery\, Cahill invites viewers into a world where thread unravels secrets\, humor softens truth\, and fabric becomes a site of connection between artist and audience. The exhibition showcases her latest body of work\, where thread unravels personal and cultural narratives one stitch at a time. \nWebsite: www.blaircahill.com

SUMMARY:Art Matters The Paintings of Robert Forte
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 3rd – Saturday\, June 21st\, 2025 \nOpening reception: Thursday\, June 5th\, 6:00 – 8:00pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce Art Matters\, a new solo exhibition of paintings by Robert Forte\, on view from Tuesday\, June 3rd through Saturday\, June 21st\, 2025. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday\, June 5th\, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \n In today’s highly charged socio-political environment\, the need for the arts is essential. “Art Matters” is a show that addresses this imperative through the artist’s belief that painting provides a viable release for the concerns and emotions that are so palpable today. Forte’s new work reflects a multi-faceted world of bold imagery and vibrant color as a metaphor for the crises we confront. In this context\, painting becomes a cathartic experience. Our world is problematic and complex\, but it is beautiful\, inspirational and meaningful as well. Forte’s paintings portray diversity\, trauma and violence\, but they also remind the viewer that there is much to be grateful for. The components that generate this exuberance are the “matters” which inform Forte’s art and demonstrate why art “matters”. \nRobert Forte’s paintings are held by numerous private collectors and are shown regularly at Atlantic Gallery and at the Meeting House Gallery in New Marlborough\, Massachusetts. Forte is a member of the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors\, and has exhibited in the Federation’s annual show at Prince Street Gallery. Forte studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League and Spring Studio. He also attended classes at the School of Visual Arts\, and participated in a workshop with Philip Pearlstein at the National Academy School of Fine Arts. Forte is a graduate of Harvard Law School and held the position of Deputy Solicitor General of the State of New York. \nWebsite: robertforte.com \nAtlantic Gallery • 548 West 28th Street • Suite 540 • New York\, NY 10001 • Tel. 212.219.3183 \nGallery Hours: Tues-Sat noon-6:00 p.m

SUMMARY:Phyllis Chillingworth: The Experience of Seeing
DESCRIPTION:May 13 – May 31\, 2025 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, May 15\, 5-8pm \n\n\n“Stepping out of the villa in Fiesole\, I saw stripes of pale-pink and cobalt-blue\, stopping me in my tracks. I had to paint.” \n\n\n\n\n\nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to present The Experience of Seeing\, the 6th solo show by Phyllis Chillingworth\, on view from May 13 to May 31\, 2025. The Opening Reception: Thursday\, May 15. Chillingworth has a clarity of vision\, a unique color sense and the ability to create paintings of impact that excite the senses. They are as much about her as they are about the inspiration of the moment. Chillingworth states: “There is more on my brushes than pigment.”  Each painting tells a story and shifts the viewer’s perspective\, looking up\, over\, through and beyond. She invites you to experience the fascination\, emotion and symbolism that they each evoke. \n\n\n\n\n\n“This stunning body of work communicates Chillingworth’s deep connection to the beauty of the natural world. The luminosity and purity of vision each of the compositions holds\, invites us to feel the spark of her inspiration. Generously offering a window to her process\, her fresh collages and watercolors allow us to take a deeper journey into her practice. The pieces are gem-like distillations of the spirit of both the artist and the places she loves.”      \n\n\n                                                                  — Amy Wynne\, Artist\, Educator\, Explorer \n\n\n\n\n\nPhyllis Chillingworth lives in NYC and Montauk. SUMMARY:Fellow Imaginaries
DESCRIPTION:FELLOW IMAGINARIES\nA Collaborative Installation by\nCAROLE d’INVERNO and SUSAN ROSTOW\nwith Incidental Music by BILL FRISELL\nApril 22 – May 10\, 2025 \nOpening Reception:\nThursday\, April 24\, 5 to 8 pm \n\nInstagram Live Feed & Walk Through:\nTuesday April 29\, 1 pm www.instagram.com/susanrostow \n\nArtists in Conversation with Etty Yaniv\nat the Gallery and on Zoom:\nSaturday\, May 3\, 5 to 6 pm\nRSVP for the zoom link at fellowimaginaries@gmail.com \n  \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to present Fellow Imaginaries\, a collaborative exhibition by artists Carole d’Inverno and Susan Rostow with an ambient soundtrack by composer Bill Frisell. \n\nFor d’Inverno and Rostow Fellow Imaginaries is the culmination of a long process of sharing ideas as artists\, friends\, and neighbors. Over the past year\, via trial and error\, doing and undoing\, they have arrived at a shared narrative of labor and play. The work they are presenting comes from memories and stories of their upbringing\, d’Inverno in Italy and Belgium\, Rostow in Philadelphia and New York City. Their knowledge and experience as mature artists pulls the work into focus and clears it of unnecessary narrative. Bill Frisell\, a renowned composer\, has worked with d’Inverno and Rostow before. This time\, he lends his signature sound to create an ambient soundtrack inspired by the sculptures and paintings. The ethereal soundtrack enhances the visual experience of the exhibition. \nThe direct connection between d’Inverno and Rostow is fully apparent in their 3D collaborative sculptures. We see them fusing their esthetics to create a hybrid. The pieces are mostly in white or muted tones and are connected via wires that enhance the works’ narrative. The sculptures evoke manual labor and play. We see them pull and push fanciful loads\, as in Yacht Rock. Others swing from a makeshift circus trapeze\, as in Acrobatica\, or juggle plates\, as in GrandMa’s Porcelain. All are the result of long talks\, shared stories\, and memories.\nFor d’Inverno\, this collaboration has opened new pathways in her artistic practice. She reconnected with the making of 3D objects. To make her sculptures\, she transformed her space from a painting studio to a shop and used found objects\, paper clay\, and papier-mâché. These new works seem\, at times\, to be toppling over and display inherent fragility and playfulness. d’Inverno is also presenting new paintings made in response to Rostow’s colors and shapes. The new work is notable in the use of a narrative of building blocks\, and earthy tones as in North-South. \n\nFor Rostow\, the collaboration unexpectedly shifted her palette from earthy tones to pastels and nearly white pieces. She also reversed her usual process for creating biomorphic figurative sculptures. Previously\, she built a foundation of prints on paper and wire\, then applied clay and pigments on top. In this collaboration\, she began with a clay foundation\, layering prints on paper and wire over it. This approach resulted in a lighter surface color\, with exposed wires intentionally left visible to connect her pieces to d’Inverno’s physically. \nFellow Imaginaries is a testament to the power of artistic exchange\, where materials\, ideas\, and processes merge to form a shared visual language. Through their collaborative sculptures and individual works\, d’Inverno and Rostow push each other into new creative territories\, while Frisell’s ambient soundtrack ties it all together\, making the exhibition an immersive\, multi-sensory experience. \nCarole d’Inverno (b. 1956\, Spa\, Belgium) is a research-driven artist focusing on American history. Her paintings and drawings investigate themes of immigration\, and the human impact on the land. Notable solo exhibitions include the Duluth Art Institute\, Duluth\, MN; Atlantic Gallery\, NY\, NY; The Massillon Museum\, Massillon\, OH; The Western Carolina University\, Cullowhee\, NC; PENN State University\, Altoona\, PA; and the State University of New York\, Rochester\, NY. d’Inverno has participated in exhibitions at the Maitland Art and History Museums\, Maitland\, FL; North Seattle College Art Gallery\, Seattle\, WA; NARS Foundation\, NY\, NY; Schweinfurth Art Center\, Auburn\, NY; Notre Dame of Maryland University\, Baltimore\, MD; and the Ronald Barr Gallery\, Indiana University Southeast\, New Albany\, IN\, amongst others. d’Inverno lives and works in New York. \nBill Frisell (b. 1951\, Baltimore\, MD). Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings\, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as ‘the best recorded output of the decade.’ In recent years\, Frisell has forged a distinctive and fruitful collaboration with the Blue Note label\, releasing HARMONY\, Valentine and FOUR to great acclaim. Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists\, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012.  He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists\, Meet the Composer among others. In 2016\, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013\, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors. Frisell is the subject of a documentary film by director Emma Franz\, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait\, which examines his creative process in depth\, as well as an extensive biography by Philip Watson\, Beautiful Dreamer: The Guitarist Who Changed The Sound of American Music. \n\nSusan Rostow (b. 1953\, NYC\, NY) is a Brooklyn based process-driven multi-media artist working in printmaking\, sculpture\, and animation. Her work investigates the balance between nature and technology\, the real and imagined\, and physical and digital realities. Rostow is a recipient of several awards\, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Printmaking / Book Arts\, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship and the Anolic Jewish Book Arts Award. She has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout NYC and the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. Her prints and sculptural books are in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress National Print Archives\, Washington DC\, the Allan Chasanoff Bookwork Collection at Yale University Art Gallery\, New Haven\, CT\, the Portland Art Museum\, Portland\, OR\, and the Washington State Art Collection\, Olympia\, WA. \n\nAtlantic Gallery 548 West 28th Street\, Suite 540\, New York\, NY 10001 • Tel. 212.219.3183 \nGallery Hours: Tues-Sat 12-6 p.m.

SUMMARY:Dance the Distance: MICHELE FOYER & ANNE BERLIT
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 11 – Saturday\, March 22\, 2025\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, March 13th from 6–8 pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to present Dance the Distance\, an exhibition featuring the work of Anne Berlit and Michele Foyer. \nBoth artists explore layering and a poetic interplay of light\, color\, and reflection to create depth and distance. The translucent\, smooth surfaces of Berlit’s acrylic-on-plexiglass paintings contrast with Foyer’s opaque\, textured\, painted-paper collages\, engaging in a visual dialogue that unfolds within and between their works. Their art extends beyond traditional boundaries\, incorporating the surrounding space and inviting viewers to actively engage in its perception. \nBerlit is a German artist based in Essen who studied Free Graphics and Sculpture at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1992 – 1999)\, becoming a master student of David Rabinowitch (1998) and earning the Akademiebrief (1999). SUMMARY:ALL COLORS MAKE ME HAPPY
DESCRIPTION:ALL COLORS MAKE ME HAPPY \n\n\nLola Baltzell • Deborah Peeples • Ruth Sack \n\n\nTuesday\, October 15 – Saturday\, November 2\, 2024 \n\n\nOpening Reception Thursday\, October 17\, 2024 5-8pm \n\n\n\n\n\nAtlantic Gallery is thrilled to present “All Colors Make Me Happy\,” featuring the works of Lola Baltzell\, Deborah Peeples and Ruth Sack. These artists are united by their exuberant embrace of color and expression across their diverse practices. Lola Baltzell’s creative process begins with spontaneous scribbles and words\, ingeniously transforming them into powerful abstract images that evoke emotion and movement through color\, revealing deeper narratives of personal and communal experiences. Deborah Peeples adds a structured dimension to the exhibit with her geometric abstractions. Her paintings share a grid structure and semiotic language\, forming a narrative where circles act as distinct characters. Peeples’ art mirrors her exploration of identity and pursuit of belonging while reflecting the interplay between vulnerability and resilience. Ruth Sack contributes a playful energy to the exhibition with her sculptures\, crafted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each anthropomorphic figure is layered with color and meaning\, exuding quirkiness and fun\, encouraging a joyful interaction\, and reminding viewers of the lightness and humor that art can inspire. Collectively\, the works of Baltzell\, Peeples\, and Sack embody a vibrant and dynamic exploration of color\, joyfulness\, and movement\, inviting viewers to engage with the uplifting spirit of the show. \n\n\nLola Baltzell is a self-taught mixed media artist. She was born and raised in rural northwest Iowa. She spent a lot of time with her Russian grandfather who ran a junk yard on the wrong side of the tracks. She embraces random finds and use of non-traditional materials – ephemera and found objects. \n\n\nDeborah Peeples is an abstract painter who was born in Brooklyn and lives in Cambridge\, MA. She holds a BFA from Washington University School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited widely and can be found in collections across the US and abroad. \n\n\nRuth Sack is an artist born in Brooklyn\, NY who lives and works in Cheshire\, CT. She studied at the New York Studio School and received an MFA from CUNY Queens College. Her work is exhibited and in collections in New York and throughout New England. \n\n\nlola@lolaart.com \n\n\ndebpeeples.com \n\n\nruthsackartist.com

SUMMARY:UNDERSTORY Recent Work by Melissa Rubin
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 28th through Saturday\, June 15th\, 2024 \nOpening reception: Saturday\, June 1st\, 2:00-5:00pm \nAtlantic Gallery is very pleased to present the solo exhibition UNDERSTORY: Recent Work by Melissa Rubin. Melissa’s second solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery\, UNDERSTORY will feature works ranging from 2021-24. \nUNDERSTORY is an ode to a place that simply still exists; it is a meditative\, emotional and visual study of the natural environment where Melissa Rubin lives and works\, in southeastern Vermont. The world below the canopy of the trees\, the understory\, is teeming with life and decay. The layers of raw materials become deep inspiration for her imagery and approach to creating her art. Melissa’s work is comprised of many layers of papers\, monoprints\, paints\, and various organic materials\, such as wax\, powdered pigments\, dried grasses\, branches\, carbon\, ash\, silver leaf\, marble dust and clay. Evocative of forest underlayers\, the imagery alludes to entangled\, interconnected webs of trees\, branches\, membranes\, neural networks\, flowing springs\, as well as the infinite night sky of Vermont. The understory can also be utilized in a literary sense; it is the architecture that undergirds\, gives meaning to\, and supports a story. Like the world below the canopy\, it is moveable and fluid. In addition to the physical environment\, Melissa’s work reflects the expansive\, psychological experience of space. Exploring the terrain and its impact on her relationship to the environment\, Melissa creates pictorial references to textures\, branches\, decay\, and growth\, all woven together to form a depiction of her outer and inner landscape. The media she uses functions as her personal vocabulary of expression\, as proxy to emotional states of mind. She consciously works with materials that help to facilitate a sense of light\, darkness\, mystery\, and possibility. \n\nMelissa Rubin\, a New York-based artist for over 3 decades\, recently relocated to Vermont. Her art has been featured in ARTnews Magazine\, Encaustic Arts Magazine\, Wax Fusion\, and on CBS This Morning. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. The most recent venues to show her work are Atlantic Gallery\, NYC;  Carter-Burden Gallery\, NYC; John Molloy Gallery\, NYC; MAPSpace\, Port Chester\, NY; Pelham Art Center\, Pelham\, NY; Canal Street Art Gallery\, Bellows Falls\, VT. Melissa has been awarded grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, the New York Foundation for the Arts and she received a Fulbright Teacher Fellowship to Japan. SUMMARY:Seeing What Happens Monotypes by Arlene Farenci

A reception \nfor the artist will be held on Thursday\, May 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nThe title of the show\, SEEING WHAT HAPPENS\, refers to Arlene’s embrace of a symbiotic relationship \nbetween spontaneous painting and the unpredictability of monotype printmaking. She paints with ink onto \na plexiglass plate using an array of tools—brushes\, sponges\, rollers\, and spatulas—pushing and carving out \nlayers of color in a playful\, sometimes whimsical way. The plate is then put through a press which reveals marks \nand textures that are inherently unique to the monotype process. The show is comprised of works created from \n2021 to 2023. \nArlene earned her BS in Fine Arts at CUNY Hunter College. She received additional printmaking education at \nthe Robert Blackburn Workshop\, the Manhattan Graphics Center\, and workshops in monotype printmaking \nwith master printers Anthony Kirk and Michael Costello. Her work has been recognized in numerous group \nexhibitions\, including the BWAC Print 2021 exhibition at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition\, where \nshe earned the Best of Show Silver Medal\, and the 10th Annual Juried Summer Exhibition at Greenwich Art \nSociety in Greenwich\, Conn.\, where she was honored with the Sonja Gerquest Memorial Award. Her work \nhas been showcased in exhibitions at the Blue Mountain Gallery\, Prince Street Gallery and Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea. \nwww.arlenefarenci.com

SUMMARY:Trash: Drawings and Paintings by Barbara Griffiths
DESCRIPTION:TRASH\nDrawings and Paintings\nBarbara Griffiths \nAtlantic Gallery\, New York City\nNovember 7-25\, 2023 \nOpening Reception:\nThursday November 9\, 6-8 pm \nDuring the pandemic\, Griffiths began to draw the uncollected trash piling up on the streets. When the homeless arrived\, she was faced with the ethical dilemma of whether they should be included in the drawings. Now that we’re more aware of human rights\, should real people\, especially the disadvantaged\, be treated as aesthetic objects? These works provoke cognitive dissonance by presenting two highly charged subjects\, waste and homelessness\, without any emotional message. \nGriffiths’ subject became the gap between the artist and the viewer\, the artwork and the interpretations the viewer might take from it. \nBarbara Griffiths is an English artist who trained at The Slade School in London. She exhibited at The Lasson Gallery in London\, then moved to Connecticut in 1995\, where she made work about human nature\, identity\, and religion. Griffiths exhibited at The Silvermine Guild\, Katonah Museum\, Long Island Museum\, The Greenwich Arts Center\, and The University of Connecticut. To accompany an exhibition of Bible illustrations at The Fairfield Arts Center\, Griffiths staged public debates with a Priest and a Rabbi; these questioned the existence of God. Her satirical Bible Stories for Children won praise from Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris and was serialized in Skeptic Magazine\, U.K. \nFour years ago Griffiths moved to Brooklyn. Her self-portrait is featured on the NYAC ‘Curated Shows’ page\, and her work was included in the online exhibits Lost & Found\, and City Life; also in the annual Connections exhibitions and Causality at The Atlantic Gallery\, Art Over Time at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists’ Gallery\, and Women Celebrate Women at El Barrio Art space.

SUMMARY:Joan Walton: Double Vision
DESCRIPTION:October 17 – November 4\, 2023 \nReception: Thursday\, October 19\, 6 to 8pm\nArtist Talk/ Meet the Artist: Saturday\, October 28\, 2pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce DOUBLE VISION\, an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and photography presenting an artist’s view of the world around her in two distinct disciplines and mediums. \nThe exhibition juxtaposes the tactile qualities and spatial experience of hand-built clay vessels with the two-dimensional plane of the photograph\, where the viewer looks through the flat surface into a perceived space. Walton has pushed through the constraints of her sculptural work to search for visual meaning\, contemplating this Georgia O’Keeffe quote\, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” \n\n\n\n\nThis new way of working deepens her observations and explores how one artist finds meaning in what she sees using different sets of tools. All of the photographic images were made within a half-mile radius of her studio in Montauk\, NY\, allowing a timely interchange between working with clay and her camera. \nWriting about Walton’s sculptures\, Pat Rogers stated in the Hamptons ArtHub: “It’s difficult to know where to look first: the colorful interiors that gleam or the aggressively textural exteriors in nuanced monotones found in Joan Walton’s fine art ceramics. Moving between the two doesn’t seem to solve the dilemma as each distinct area commands time and attention. Taken together\, the works present an unusual pairing that contributes to a unique and intriguing whole. \nJoan Walton received her BFA with honors from Pratt Institute\, majoring in photography. She began working in clay after a career in art direction and photo editing. Her award-winning ceramic work has been widely exhibited in the U.S.\, and as a visiting artist in China and Korea.

SUMMARY:Susan Rostow: Hello from Here
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a solo exhibition of new works by Susan Rostow. Hello from Here is Rostow’s visual response to the American singer/songwriter John Prine’s song\, Hello in There. While Prine’s words deal with thoughts of isolation on growing old\, Rostow sheds new light on aging\, beauty\, grotesque\, and satire. Through printmaking\, sculpture\, wall reliefs\, and animation\, Rostow shares her feelings on the myths of beauty standards and aging uncomfortably. \nSusan Rostow splits her time between living in New York City and rural upstate New York. Her work combines her fascination with the clamor of crowds of people in the city with the solitude found in the rich countryside landscapes. \nThis is Rostow’s second solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery. Her work has also been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in New York City and throughout the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. She has earned a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in printmaking\, drawing and book arts and a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant. Rostow’s prints and sculptural books are in public and private collections including the Allan Chasanoff Bookwork Collection\, Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress\, National Print Archives\, etc. \nSusan Rostow’s website: www.susanrostow.com and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/susanrostow/ \nAtlantic Gallery • 548 West 28th Street • Suite 540 • New York\, NY 10001 • Tel. 212.219.3183

A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday\, June 1st\, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. \nA Vignette can be interpreted in different ways\, and that’s precisely what the artists in this show do. Working in digital and traditional mediums\, the artists use their distinct styles and unique voices to tell brief stories or capture moments in time. Although each artist strives to craft their own tales\, The work shares a common thread through- out the exhibition to weave a larger narrative. \nAmong the group of artists are former roommates and classmates. Others were brought together by chance encounters or through social media. Some have previously worked together\, and others collaborated for the first time. Together\, they created a show that’s both eclectic and cohesive. SUMMARY:Hindsight: The Paintings of Roni Sherman Ramos
DESCRIPTION:May 9th – May 27th\,2023\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, May 11th\, 5 – 8 PM \nAtlantic Gallery is proud to announce the fifth solo show by Roni Sherman Ramos who has been exhibiting here over the course of eight years. \n\nIn these 51 small oil paintings a story is told about looking back in time. The title\, “Hindsight”\, refers to that fuller understanding of the sense of environment and state of mind when recalling a place or an event.Ramos’ paintings are not limited to a literal depiction of time and place; they are rather a mind’s eye view of having been there. \nOne painting\, “Barn”\, draws us to a pasture where a building simply sits\, a familiar scene. In another\, a warm beachy day evokes memories of Puerto Rico vacations. In contrast\, a number of Ramos’ images serve to provoke the imagination: abstract forms conjure serene\, dreamy days\, weightless colors float\, nighttime moodiness plays in opposition to images of vivid brightness. \nTo be sure\, take all the time you need to explore the many facets of “Hindsight”. \nIn the last two years\, I discovered a different perspective from working small. I became hyperaware of texture and materials\, adding marble dust and sand and thereby creating a rich\, nearly three- dimensional surface. \nIn contrast to larger scale work\, small panels make for quicker resolutions of compositional problems\, especially in the more immediate acts of taking away and building back – allowing traces of “history” to show through. Another kind of “hindsight”. These small works have both delighted and confounded me along the way. \n-Roni Sherman Ramos \n\n
