DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 11 – Saturday\, March 22\, 2025\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, March 13th from 6–8 pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to present Dance the Distance\, an exhibition featuring the work of Anne Berlit and Michele Foyer. \nBoth artists explore layering and a poetic interplay of light\, color\, and reflection to create depth and distance. The translucent\, smooth surfaces of Berlit’s acrylic-on-plexiglass paintings contrast with Foyer’s opaque\, textured\, painted-paper collages\, engaging in a visual dialogue that unfolds within and between their works. Their art extends beyond traditional boundaries\, incorporating the surrounding space and inviting viewers to actively engage in its perception. \nBerlit is a German artist based in Essen who studied Free Graphics and Sculpture at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1992 – 1999)\, becoming a master student of David Rabinowitch (1998) and earning the Akademiebrief (1999). Her work is included in notable collections such as the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf\, the City of Essen\, and the Sparkasse Gütersloh. These artists are united by their exuberant embrace of color and expression across their diverse practices. Lola Baltzell’s creative process begins with spontaneous scribbles and words\, ingeniously transforming them into powerful abstract images that evoke emotion and movement through color\, revealing deeper narratives of personal and communal experiences. Deborah Peeples adds a structured dimension to the exhibit with her geometric abstractions. Her paintings share a grid structure and semiotic language\, forming a narrative where circles act as distinct characters. Peeples’ art mirrors her exploration of identity and pursuit of belonging while reflecting the interplay between vulnerability and resilience. Ruth Sack contributes a playful energy to the exhibition with her sculptures\, crafted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each anthropomorphic figure is layered with color and meaning\, exuding quirkiness and fun\, encouraging a joyful interaction\, and reminding viewers of the lightness and humor that art can inspire. Collectively\, the works of Baltzell\, Peeples\, and Sack embody a vibrant and dynamic exploration of color\, joyfulness\, and movement\, inviting viewers to engage with the uplifting spirit of the show. \n\n\nLola Baltzell is a self-taught mixed media artist. She was born and raised in rural northwest Iowa. She spent a lot of time with her Russian grandfather who ran a junk yard on the wrong side of the tracks. She embraces random finds and use of non-traditional materials – ephemera and found objects. \n\n\nDeborah Peeples is an abstract painter who was born in Brooklyn and lives in Cambridge\, MA. She holds a BFA from Washington University School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited widely and can be found in collections across the US and abroad. \n\n\nRuth Sack is an artist born in Brooklyn\, NY who lives and works in Cheshire\, CT. She studied at the New York Studio School and received an MFA from CUNY Queens College. DESCRIPTION:  \nQUOTIDIAN: an EXHIBITION of WORK by CAROL CRAWFORD \nSEPTEMBER 24th – OCTOBER 12th\,  2024 \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to present “QUOTIDIAN”\, a solo exhibition of mixed media constructions by Carol Crawford. Two opening receptions for the artist will be held on Thursday\, September 26\, from 6-8 pm\, and on Saturday\, September 28\, from 2-5.  The artist will also be present on subsequent Thursday evenings October 1 and October 8\, and on Saturdays from 2-5. Carol Crawford will be present to discuss her works informally with visitors on Thursday evenings\, 6-8 pm and on Saturday afternoons\, 2-4 pm. \nATLANTIC GALLERY is located at 548 West 28th Street in Chelsea\, New York 10001.  Gallery hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays\, 12-6 pm\, and Thursdays 12-8 pm. \nCrawford’s work in fine arts draws upon her broad background in documentary painting\, photography\, filmmaking\, printmaking\, art history and theater set design. It is enriched by her work as an interior and environmental designer. Since 1997 she has been principal designer in her own firm\, CAROL CRAWFORD ENVIRONMENTS\, inc.\, and is a Licensed New York State Interior Designer and L.E.E.D. AP. \nCarol Crawford has frequently written on issues of environmental design and sustainability for newsletters and magazines in her field\, and is deeply involved with the arts in Queens. She Has been a Board member of LICA/Long Island City Artists\, Inc.\, a non-profit artists advocacy organization\, since 1987.\, and has taught studio art\, art history and design extensively at the college and university level. She has been a faculty member in the Interior Design Department at Stanford University and Foothill College in California\, Queens College and Queensborough College in Queens\, and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, where she received her M.S.I.D. in 1995\, and taught both graduate and undergraduate courses\, emphasizing sustainable design. She also holds a Master’s degree in art history from Columbia University Graduate Faculty of Philosophy. Her thesis was on the symbolism of masks in African Art. \n Her creative work and public art projects have been recognized by numerous grants and awards; and have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in the U.S.\, Canada\, Japan and France. She has been a member of Atlantic Gallery since 2008\, and designed their new premises in the Arts Landmark Building\, 548 West 28th Street\, Chelsea\, Manhattan\, in 2012. \nCarol Crawford is an internationally exhibited interdisciplinary artist working in mixed-media\, photography\, painting\, and graphics.   Her work has been exhibited in Japan\, France\, and the United States. \nIn addition to earning her BFA at SUNY Buffalo in painting\, she holds Master’s degrees from Columbia University in art history\, and from Pratt Institute in Interior Design. Crawford has taught both studio art and art history at Stanford University and Foothill College in California\, and at Queens College\, Queensborough/ CUNY and Pratt Institute in New York. She is an author\, arts and design contributor\, photographer\, interior designer\, printmaker and filmmaker and her practice has been featured in the New York Times\, Newark Star-Ledger\, Asahi Shimbun\, INTERVIEW and more. Receptions for the artists will be held on August 1st and August 15th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. \nWe all have worlds within us that shape who we are and how we interact with the world around us. Working in digital and traditional mediums\, the artists use their distinct styles and unique voices to bring their own individual imagined worlds to life while telling brief stories and capturing moments in time. Although each artist strives to craft their own tales\, The work shares a common thread throughout the exhibition to weave a larger narrative. \nAmong the group of artists are former roommates and classmates. SUMMARY:ATLANTIC GALLERY: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce a special group exhibition Atlantic Gallery: Celebrating 50 Years. We will be marking and celebrating the longevity of Atlantic Gallery by mounting a 50th anniversary exhibition this summer\, July 9th – July 27th\, with an opening reception and celebration on Thursday\, July 11th from 6-8pm. The exhibition will include works by current artist members of Atlantic Gallery as well as works from some of the gallery’s early members; there will also be a special section devoted to founding member Sally Brody. As part of this celebratory exhibit\, we will be mounting a ‘post-card art’ sale: our 50/50 Postcard Fund-raiser\, with post-card sized works created by artists who have exhibited in the gallery throughout the years. The 50/50 Postcard Fundraiser will occur in tandem with Atlantic Gallery: Celebrating 50 Years exhibition. \n  \nFounded by a group of fine artists in 1974\, Atlantic Gallery migrated from its original home on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn\, to Soho in 1979 and to Chelsea in 2007. In 2012\, the Gallery moved to its current location in the Landmark Arts Building on West 28th Street. Melissa’s second solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery\, UNDERSTORY will feature works ranging from 2021-24. \nUNDERSTORY is an ode to a place that simply still exists; it is a meditative\, emotional and visual study of the natural environment where Melissa Rubin lives and works\, in southeastern Vermont. The world below the canopy of the trees\, the understory\, is teeming with life and decay. The layers of raw materials become deep inspiration for her imagery and approach to creating her art. Melissa’s work is comprised of many layers of papers\, monoprints\, paints\, and various organic materials\, such as wax\, powdered pigments\, dried grasses\, branches\, carbon\, ash\, silver leaf\, marble dust and clay. Evocative of forest underlayers\, the imagery alludes to entangled\, interconnected webs of trees\, branches\, membranes\, neural networks\, flowing springs\, as well as the infinite night sky of Vermont. The understory can also be utilized in a literary sense; it is the architecture that undergirds\, gives meaning to\, and supports a story. Like the world below the canopy\, it is moveable and fluid. In addition to the physical environment\, Melissa’s work reflects the expansive\, psychological experience of space. Exploring the terrain and its impact on her relationship to the environment\, Melissa creates pictorial references to textures\, branches\, decay\, and growth\, all woven together to form a depiction of her outer and inner landscape. The media she uses functions as her personal vocabulary of expression\, as proxy to emotional states of mind. She consciously works with materials that help to facilitate a sense of light\, darkness\, mystery\, and possibility. \n\nMelissa Rubin\, a New York-based artist for over 3 decades\, recently relocated to Vermont. Her art has been featured in ARTnews Magazine\, Encaustic Arts Magazine\, Wax Fusion\, and on CBS This Morning. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. A reception \nfor the artist will be held on Thursday\, May 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nThe title of the show\, SEEING WHAT HAPPENS\, refers to Arlene’s embrace of a symbiotic relationship \nbetween spontaneous painting and the unpredictability of monotype printmaking. She paints with ink onto \na plexiglass plate using an array of tools—brushes\, sponges\, rollers\, and spatulas—pushing and carving out \nlayers of color in a playful\, sometimes whimsical way. The plate is then put through a press which reveals marks \nand textures that are inherently unique to the monotype process. The show is comprised of works created from \n2021 to 2023. \nArlene earned her BS in Fine Arts at CUNY Hunter College. She received additional printmaking education at \nthe Robert Blackburn Workshop\, the Manhattan Graphics Center\, and workshops in monotype printmaking \nwith master printers Anthony Kirk and Michael Costello. Her work has been recognized in numerous group \nexhibitions\, including the BWAC Print 2021 exhibition at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition\, where \nshe earned the Best of Show Silver Medal\, and the 10th Annual Juried Summer Exhibition at Greenwich Art \nSociety in Greenwich\, Conn.\, where she was honored with the Sonja Gerquest Memorial Award. DESCRIPTION:TRASH\nDrawings and Paintings\nBarbara Griffiths \nAtlantic Gallery\, New York City\nNovember 7-25\, 2023 \nOpening Reception:\nThursday November 9\, 6-8 pm \nDuring the pandemic\, Griffiths began to draw the uncollected trash piling up on the streets. When the homeless arrived\, she was faced with the ethical dilemma of whether they should be included in the drawings. Now that we’re more aware of human rights\, should real people\, especially the disadvantaged\, be treated as aesthetic objects? These works provoke cognitive dissonance by presenting two highly charged subjects\, waste and homelessness\, without any emotional message. \nGriffiths’ subject became the gap between the artist and the viewer\, the artwork and the interpretations the viewer might take from it. \nBarbara Griffiths is an English artist who trained at The Slade School in London. She exhibited at The Lasson Gallery in London\, then moved to Connecticut in 1995\, where she made work about human nature\, identity\, and religion. Griffiths exhibited at The Silvermine Guild\, Katonah Museum\, Long Island Museum\, The Greenwich Arts Center\, and The University of Connecticut. To accompany an exhibition of Bible illustrations at The Fairfield Arts Center\, Griffiths staged public debates with a Priest and a Rabbi; these questioned the existence of God. Her satirical Bible Stories for Children won praise from Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris and was serialized in Skeptic Magazine\, U.K. \nFour years ago Griffiths moved to Brooklyn. Her self-portrait is featured on the NYAC ‘Curated Shows’ page\, and her work was included in the online exhibits Lost & Found\, and City Life; also in the annual Connections exhibitions and Causality at The Atlantic Gallery\, Art Over Time at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists’ Gallery\, and Women Celebrate Women at El Barrio Art space.

DESCRIPTION:October 17 – November 4\, 2023  \nReception: Thursday\, October 19\, 6 to 8pm\nArtist Talk/ Meet the Artist: Saturday\, October 28\, 2pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce DOUBLE VISION\, an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and photography presenting an artist’s view of the world around her in two distinct disciplines and mediums. \nThe exhibition juxtaposes the tactile qualities and spatial experience of hand-built clay vessels with the two-dimensional plane of the photograph\, where the viewer looks through the flat surface into a perceived space. Walton has pushed through the constraints of her sculptural work to search for visual meaning\, contemplating this Georgia O’Keeffe quote\, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” \n\n\n\n\nThis new way of working deepens her observations and explores how one artist finds meaning in what she sees using different sets of tools. All of the photographic images were made within a half-mile radius of her studio in Montauk\, NY\, allowing a timely interchange between working with clay and her camera. \nWriting about Walton’s sculptures\, Pat Rogers stated in the Hamptons ArtHub: “It’s difficult to know where to look first: the colorful interiors that gleam or the aggressively textural exteriors in nuanced monotones found in Joan Walton’s fine art ceramics. Moving between the two doesn’t seem to solve the dilemma as each distinct area commands time and attention. Taken together\, the works present an unusual pairing that contributes to a unique and intriguing whole. \nJoan Walton received her BFA with honors from Pratt Institute\, majoring in photography. She began working in clay after a career in art direction and photo editing. Her award-winning ceramic work has been widely exhibited in the U.S.\, and as a visiting artist in China and Korea.

Hello from Here is Rostow’s visual response to the American singer/songwriter John Prine’s song\, Hello in There. While Prine’s words deal with thoughts of isolation on growing old\, Rostow sheds new light on aging\, beauty\, grotesque\, and satire. Through printmaking\, sculpture\, wall reliefs\, and animation\, Rostow shares her feelings on the myths of beauty standards and aging uncomfortably. \nSusan Rostow splits her time between living in New York City and rural upstate New York. Her work combines her fascination with the clamor of crowds of people in the city with the solitude found in the rich countryside landscapes. \nThis is Rostow’s second solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery. Her work has also been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in New York City and throughout the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. SUMMARY:Hindsight: The Paintings of Roni Sherman Ramos
DESCRIPTION:May 9th – May 27th\,2023\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, May 11th\, 5 – 8 PM \nAtlantic Gallery is proud to announce the fifth solo show by Roni Sherman Ramos who has been exhibiting here over the course of eight years. \n\nIn these 51 small oil paintings a story is told about looking back in time. The title\, “Hindsight”\, refers to that fuller understanding of the sense of environment and state of mind when recalling a place or an event.Ramos’ paintings are not limited to a literal depiction of time and place; they are rather a mind’s eye view of having been there. \nOne painting\, “Barn”\, draws us to a pasture where a building simply sits\, a familiar scene. In another\, a warm beachy day evokes memories of Puerto Rico vacations. In contrast\, a number of Ramos’ images serve to provoke the imagination: abstract forms conjure serene\, dreamy days\, weightless colors float\, nighttime moodiness plays in opposition to images of vivid brightness. \nTo be sure\, take all the time you need to explore the many facets of “Hindsight”. \nIn the last two years\, I discovered a different perspective from working small. I became hyperaware of texture and materials\, adding marble dust and sand and thereby creating a rich\, nearly three- dimensional surface. \nIn contrast to larger scale work\, small panels make for quicker resolutions of compositional problems\, especially in the more immediate acts of taking away and building back – allowing traces of “history” to show through. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 18 – Saturday May 6th\, 2023\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, April 20th\, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. \nAtlantic Gallery announces the opening of a solo exhibition of new works by mixed media artist Chuck Fischer. Fischer’s geometric abstract constructions break the plane of two-dimensional painting and are composed of colored\, textured\, and multi-layered elements made from common materials such as wood\, copper\, and aluminum. \nHe creates visual complexity by varying the depth\, color\, and texture of each piece to draw the viewer into the work. He never sketches before starting a new piece but trusts his intuition and the materials at hand to guide him as he creates works of spatial balance and harmony. The show features Fischer’s most recent work from 2019-2023. His work was recently featured in the fine art magazines\, Artists Magazine\, and Woven Tale Press. \nEarlier in his career\, Fischer created 9 pop-up books including Great American Houses and Gardens (Rizzoli/Universe) and Christmas in New York (Little\, Brown & Co.). This diverse showcase includes painting\, sculpture\, graphics and installation\, and is on view from March 28 to April 15\, 2023\, at Atlantic Gallery\, 548 West 28 Street\, suite 540\, in the Landmark Arts Building in Chelsea\, Manhattan\, NY 10001.    \nA reception for the artists will be held on Thursday\, March 30\, from 6-8:00 pm.  An informal Meet-the-Artists Event is planned: the participating artists will introduce themselves to visitors and discuss their works and the growing art scene in Long Island City. Atlantic Gallery Hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays 12-6 pm; with extended hours on Thursdays 6-8:00 pm. \nIn addition\, a continuous digital slide show will provide glimpses into the studios of the show participants.
