Their artworks constantly change as paintings transform into sculptures\, works on paper evoke memories\, and a three-dimensional installation recites poetry. These artworks never quite settle into any realm but exist in an ever-shifting environment. Cusp opens at The Hyde Collection on Saturday\, January 25\, and continues through March 30\, 2025.  The artists will converse with curator Jen Dragon on Sunday\, January 26\, at 11:00 AM. \nTHE THREE ARTISTS \nBrian Dickerson‘s paintings are structured from built-up surfaces\, rich with energetic brushwork enveloping angular\, constructed elements. DESCRIPTION:BRIAN DICKERSON | Constructed Paintings & Drawings is a solo exhibition of recent artworks by Brian Dickerson opening at Garrison Art Center\, 23 Garrison’s Landing\, Garrison\, NY 10524 on Saturday\, November 2\, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00pm.\nDickerson’s paintings are structured from aggregated surfaces\, rich with energetic brushwork enveloping built-in elements. The raised edges act as bridges\, buttresses and apertures that at once tip and balance as their silhouettes continuously change with the ambient light. Lengthening and shortening shadows invite meditation as the viewer dwells in the crevasses only to emerge again and travel nimbly between narrow ledges and mysterious angles. Though the paintings invite intimacy\, Dickerson also leads a visual journey as vast as deserts as he engages with eternal questions of space and being.\nBrian Dickerson has had numerous solo exhibitions both internationally at Ballinglen Arts Foundation\,(Ballycastle\, Ireland) and nationally at Kouros Gallery and OK Harris (NYC\, NY)\, Institute of Man and Science (Rensselaerville\, NY)\, Bill Lowe Gallery (Atlanta\, GA)\, Benjamin Mangel Gallery\, Seraphin Gallery and Hahn Gallery (Philadelphia\, PA)\, The Grosvenor Art Gallery (S.U.N.Y. Cobleskill\, NY) and the Museum at the University of Wyoming\, (Laramie\, WY)\, among others. He has also been featured in many group exhibitions including the Delaware Art Museum\, American University Museum – Katzen Art Center (Wash. D.C.) the Woodmere Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts\, (Phila. PA). DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents the watercolors\, gouaches and works on paper of the late New York artist Bruce Cahn. Cahn’s work is known not only for his accomplished techniques\, but also for its powerful symbolic imagery. These artworks range from realistic depictions of the human form in all of the varieties of ages\, shapes and colors to elegant abstract mandalas that chart a private\, spiritual journey.   \nA prolific yet reclusive artist\, Cahn’s art practice was both obsessive and spiritual\, working tirelessly in the belief that visual perfection would prepare him for his next life. This exhibition of works on paper by Bruce Cahn is aligned with the theme of the 60th Venice Biennale\, Foreigners Everywhere\, in that Cahn’s work shifts in perspective from the human form to the inner spirit much as a foreigner journeys to the lands’ edge. As a foreigner in his own body\, Bruce Cahn spiritually transcended at the end of his life through his art practice.  \nAbout Bruce Cahn: \nBorn in the Bronx\, Bruce Cahn led an eccentric\, solitary life driven by an all-consuming desire to absorb himself into an ongoing creative process. The son of a prominent New York City caterer\, Cahn spent his childhood comfortable but socially disinterested\, preferring to spend time sculpting and drawing. After his graduation from Horace Mann High School\, Cahn studied with sculptor Harvey Fite at Bard College and then with José Mariano de Creeft at the Rhode Island School of Design. A life-time member of the Arts Student League in New York City\, Bruce Cahn worked obsessively in his small apartment/studio and later\, in his Woodstock\, New York cottage. Apart from a solo exhibit at the Horace Mann Fisher Gallery\, Bruce Cahn avoided showing his artworks so as not to be distracted from his intensive art practice. This special solo exhibition at Castello 925 is the first time these works on paper by Bruce Cahn have ever been exhibited.

In her use of humble materials\, Millicent Young castes lyrical abstractions as timeless artifacts. With wood\, horsehair and repurposed metal\, Young conveys the story of the human journey from the known to the unknown and her work reveals an ethos of care forming the possibility of healing. \nThis special solo installation in the Castello 925 Project space will close with a finissage reception on Sunday\, September 8\, 18:00 – 20:00.

The exhibition opens 8 August and runs through 8 September\, 2024 with an opening reception on Saturday\, August 10\, 2024 from 5 – 7pm and a finissage with the artist in attendance on Sunday\, September 8\, 2024 from 6 – 8 PM. \nWith string and Sumi ink\, Lynne Tobin’s black and white drawings explore mark-making inherent in textures and expressed by gesture. Spontaneous marks made by threads and rope saturated in ink are in contrast to her careful linear repeating patterns.Tobin’s immediate world\, every-day rituals\, and meditation practice inspire the rhythms in her work. \nAbout the Artist: Lynne Tobin is a mixed-media artist who lives and works in New York State’s Hudson Valley region. Previously\, Tobin maintained a studio and exhibited extensively in the Providence\, RI area including the Chazen Gallery\, The Krause Gallery\, The Mill Gallery (Pawtucket\, R.I.) and the New Bedford Art Museum (New Bedford\, MA). Recently\, she was in a two-person exhibition together with Millicent Young at Castello 925. This current solo show at Castello 925’s other venue at 780 is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Venice. \nAbout CASTELLO 925: \nCastello 925 is a multi-disciplinary\, non-profit gallery which serves as a works that were built elsewhere\, yet also a space where new ideas and new co-operations come to life. DESCRIPTION:Cross Contemporary Art Projects presents the paintings of the late New York artist Fred Duignan\, curated by Sara Lynn Henry at Castello 925 in Venice\, Italy. Duignan’s work is known not only for its variety of textures\, washes and techniques\, but also for its powerful abstract imagery. The paintings in this exhibit represent the last few years of work after receiving his diagnosis.  According to the curator\, Sara Lynn Henry\, ” (The artist)… started as a player in the 1980s East Village\, NYC\, when art burst forth as direct\, unruly\, naïve seeming\, getting at raw personal matters of process and reality\, accessing the unconscious as well as conscious intensities. SUMMARY:Streaming: Sculpture by Christy Rupp
DESCRIPTION:Understood as one of the early pioneers in the field of ecological art activism\, the artist\, activist and thought-leader Christy Rupp has an international reputation. Streaming will feature a survey of Rupp’s intricate collages\, wall installations and free-standing sculpture\, which chronicle the ongoing tension between natural systems and the environment in transition\, and call our attention to our interconnectedness with non-humans and habitat – transmuting detritus gathered from the waste stream through collage and sculpture to reveal what is hidden away from common view and understanding. Informed by science and the historical representation of natural history\, the artwork in this exhibition examines the way we frame our opinions of nature\, using irony and wit to represent the human impact on our natural habitat. This exhibition in the Walsh Gallery located at Fairfield University opens Thursday\, January 18th and runs through Saturday\, April 27th\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Alter Altar is a solo exhibition of sculptures and site-specific installations by Millicent Young.  The exhibit includes seventeen works fabricated over 20 years and installed in two historic barn buildings in Stone Ridge\, New York. These artworks range from loft-filling installations embedded with motion-activated sound to smaller-scaled wall-mounted works that respond to the hand-hewn quality of the vernacular spaces. Young’s work draws on the power of simple materials such as clay\, horsehair\, sticks\, metal and rope to weave\, thread\, stitch\, join\, forge\, hammer\, sculpt\, bind\, and scribe the surrounding environment with a clarity and austerity that elevates the common and creates space for being. The exhibition was reviewed by Nina Chkareuli-Mdivani and published on October 13\, 2023. \nWork included in this exhibition was supported with an Individual Artist grant from the State Council on the Arts/Arts Mid Hudson.

DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents a solo exhibition of paintings  by Martin Weinstein in the Castello 780 gallery starting on September 16  and running through November 26\, 2023. The exhibition\, entitled Inside | Outside\, considers the layers of space that range from the interior of a room to the wide expanse of the landscape beyond. By working on several sheets of acrylic\, Weinstein isolates these different distances with deft\, gestural brushwork. It is the manipulation of these layers and the ability to “reshuffle” each of them one in front of another that creates confusion as to what is near and what is far away. These layers are in turn encased in a clear\, acrylic box that allows the ambient light to shift and change the colors of paintings while glowing through one another. These sculptural\, illuminated painting boxes act as containers that hold a period of time as well as an ever-changing kaleidoscope of space.

DESCRIPTION:BRIAN DICKERSON | Constructed Paintings & Drawings is a solo exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Brian Dickerson opening with a reception for the artist at Lightforms Gallery in Hudson\, NY. on July 15\, 2023\, 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Dickerson’s paintings are structured from aggregated surfaces\, rich with energetic brushwork\, that envelope built-in elements. The raised edges act as bridges\, buttresses and apertures that at once tip and balance as their silhouettes continuously change with the ambient light. Lengthening and shortening shadows invite meditation as the viewer dwells in the crevasses only to emerge again to travel nimbly between narrow ledges and mysterious angles. SUMMARY:Binnen of Buiten – de Betekenis van Grenzen en Begrenzingen (“(With)in or (With)out – The Significances of Borders and Boundaries”)
DESCRIPTION:From May 27 to June 20\, the art space of the Milk Factory presents a group exhibition titled “(With)in or (With)out – The Significances of Borders and Boundaries” with a work by Brian Dickerson. Dickerson’s painting “Vroman” is structured from aggregated surfaces\, rich with energetic brushwork\, that envelope built-in elements. These constructed ridges create sharp shadows that change as the viewer’s gaze shifts from left to right\, and from up to down. The raised edges act as bridges\, buttresses and apertures that at once tip and balance as their silhouettes continuously change with the ambient light. Lengthening and shortening shadows invite meditation as the viewer dwells in the crevasses only to emerge again to travel nimbly between narrow ledges and mysterious angles. Though the paintings invite intimacy\, Dickerson’s painting also spearheads a journey as vast as deserts as he engages with eternal questions of space and being.\n\n\nThe group exhibition in De Melkfabriek\, ‘s-Hertogenbosch\, ‘Binnen or Buiten – Boundaries and Limitations’\, explores the boundaries of society from the artist’s point of view.\n\n\n“We are on our way\, yes\, but everywhere we collide with boundaries: Boundaries set by others: physical\, with customs control\, high fences or sometimes even with landmines. Or we collide with limits in norms and morals. And\, sooner or later we come up against limits that our body or mind encounters.”\n\n\nEighteen artists from eight countries show their vision in image or word. Dickersons schilderij “Vroman” is opgebouwd uit geaggregeerde oppervlakken\, rijk aan energieke penseelvoering\, die ingebouwde elementen omhullen. Deze geconstrueerde richels creëren scherpe schaduwen die veranderen naarmate de blik van de kijker van links naar rechts en van boven naar beneden verschuift. De opstaande randen fungeren als bruggen\, steunberen en openingen die tegelijk kantelen en balanceren terwijl hun silhouetten voortdurend veranderen met het omgevingslicht. Langer wordende en korter wordende schaduwen nodigen uit tot meditatie terwijl de kijker in de spleten vertoeft om vervolgens weer tevoorschijn te komen om behendig tussen smalle richels en mysterieuze hoeken te reizen. Hoewel de schilderijen uitnodigen tot intimiteit\, vormt het schilderij van Dickerson ook de speerpunt van een reis zo uitgestrekt als woestijnen terwijl hij zich bezighoudt met eeuwige vragen over ruimte en zijn.

DESCRIPTION:Ford Crull’s solo exhibition Lost Horizons opens Thurs. May 4\, 2023\, 6-8pm with a reception for the artist at Georges Berges Gallery\, 462 West Broadway\, New York. NY. \nFord Crull explores the expressive power of personal and cultural symbols in a series of densely painted and vividly colored compositions. The artist uses identifiable icons such as hearts\, wings\, crosses\, and the human figure\, as well as geometrical emblems and abstract forms whose meanings are less explicit. Words\, in the form of cryptic\, fleeting phrases\, animate Crull’s pictorial world. There is a strong element of the diaristic in Crull’s work\, allowing each painting to serve as a painterly journal of reflections and reveries set loose from their origins in specific events. In a wider sense\, these paintings constitute an intensive search to wrest meaning from an anarchy of feeling. SUMMARY:Kaethe Kauffman: Workshop at Castello 925
DESCRIPTION:Since the ’90s\, Kaethe Kauffman has worked with the female body studying and documenting its movement and creating out of this performative process\, a series of abstracted images. These artworks\, inspired by the practice of yoga\, investigate the theme of freedom by challenging the objectification by society of women’s bodies. Using string dipped in paint\, the artist ties the filament around a hand\, knee\, elbow\, or torso\, and when the body part is flexed\, the movement is recorded as an off-printing of paint on skin. In Kauffman’s art\, the body writes itself upon its own skin in a ritual of self-revelation. This act of marking and exposure is documented by Kauffman’s photographic images\, which are digitally repeated and colored\, drawn upon by hand in a variety of media and the vibrant results are printed on silk much like the large banners found in Buddhist temples. In an expansion of the body’s own “speech” through movement\, Kaethe Kauffman’s images combine into larger fields of replication and mirroring\, until the individual body is subsumed into a larger vision. \nKaethe Kauffman’s solo exhibition Yoga: Interiore Eterno at Castello 925\, Venice Italy will feature a workshop about abstraction and movement involving audience members.\nDuring this workshop the audience will have the opportunity to become a both a model for the artist and a participant in her creative process.

SUMMARY:Kaatsbaan Outdoor Sculpture Park
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 6\, 2022\, 4-6pm\, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park will host a public reception and artist walk to celebrate the 2022 outdoor sculpture exhibition. This is the second year that contemporary sculpture has been installed at Kaatsbaan for the Summer Festival season. Curated by Hilary Greene\, the artworks complement the ongoing dance\, music\, poetry\, and culinary arts summer programming. This year’s participating artists are: Emil Alzamora\, Stuart Farmery\, Tristan Fitch\, Jared Handelsman\, Kenichi Hiratsuka\, Lowell Miller\, Portia Munson\, Shelley Parriott\, Eileen M. Power\, Gregory Steel\, Christina Tenaglia\, and Millicent Young.\nThe sculpture exhibition originated in 2021 in response to the Pandemic as Kaatsbaan moved its events outdoors so both artists and audience could safely experience Kaatsbaan’s world class dance and music performances. Exhibition curator Hilary Greene envisioned the artworks as multi- dimensional participants that activate and enhance the lush historic grounds.\nFocusing on mid-career sculptors\, Ms. Greene selected artworks that best embodied the spirit and flow of the Hudson Valley’s unique landscape and the joy of rhythm and movement. From hand-carved monuments and wire-bound stones\, to vibrant wooden forms and sheer colorful columns\, from a glowing silk banner and poetic etched glass\, to cast bronze figures and dancing ladders\, the outdoor sculpture exhibition at Kaatsbaan displays a powerful vocabulary and far-reaching range of contemporary art.
