DESCRIPTION:As there are no forests in Venice\, the Venetian dialect phrase for “foreigner” is “foresti” or “someone from the forest”. I Foresti\, a group exhibition at Castello 925\, plays on that vernacular expression as these American artists are not only foreigners to Venice but are inspired by the materials and rich textures of the forest. I Foresti explores the meanings of the Venetian phrase “foresti” as surveyors of the sensory experience of nature (Weinstein and Leith)\, or purveyors of the rhythms of its hidden life forms (McClintock) or a cartographer of the foreigner’s journey (Young). Together\, these artists convey the experience of the forest and the foreigner as inspiration\, destination and refuge to the city of Venice in tandem with the theme of the 60th Biennale “Strangers Everywhere“. DESCRIPTION:KAETHE KAUFFMAN | LA FORESTA\nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 19\, 2024  5:00 – 8:00 PM\nKaethe Kauffman meditates on the unseen systems of forest growth as well as on\nmemories of the calm\, steady presence of individual trees throughout her life. Her most\nrecent series of prints on paper and silk not only explore the individuality and spirit of\ntrees combined with the physical movement of walking through nature but then\ncaptures this sensation with the meditative movements of drawing. These artworks\, in\nturn\, are transformed into prints on silk banners and on paper mounted onto wood\npanels. The lightweight fabric installations act as thin veils of consciousness. DESCRIPTION:SHINY OBJECTS presents paintings by Anne Leith and Elynne Rosenfeld together with wall sculpture by Kathleen Spicer. These three colleagues\, all members of InLiquid and Montgomery County Guild of Professional Artists\, have exhibited extensively together. Inspired by the natural world\, all three artists incorporate ambient light to produce the shifting element of shine. Leith applies gold\, copper and silver leaf in her plein air oil paintings while Rosenfeld incorporates shattered tempered glass and beads together into her iridescent artworks and Spicer’s wall sculptures employs metallic paint allowing light to skip over her curved surfaces.\nThis most recent incarnation of SHINY OBJECTS will be on exhibit at the Baby Grand Gallery of The Grand Opera House \, 818 North Market Street\, Wilmington\, 19801 from March 1 – April 1 2024\nwith an opening reception from 5:00 -7:00 pm on Friday March 1. SUMMARY:Streaming: Sculpture by Christy Rupp
DESCRIPTION:Understood as one of the early pioneers in the field of ecological art activism\, the artist\, activist and thought-leader Christy Rupp has an international reputation. Streaming will feature a survey of Rupp’s intricate collages\, wall installations and free-standing sculpture\, which chronicle the ongoing tension between natural systems and the environment in transition\, and call our attention to our interconnectedness with non-humans and habitat – transmuting detritus gathered from the waste stream through collage and sculpture to reveal what is hidden away from common view and understanding. Informed by science and the historical representation of natural history\, the artwork in this exhibition examines the way we frame our opinions of nature\, using irony and wit to represent the human impact on our natural habitat. This exhibition in the Walsh Gallery located at Fairfield University opens Thursday\, January 18th and runs through Saturday\, April 27th\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:In the current solo exhibition at the Mazlish Gallery\, the soulful paintings of Loy Luo evoke timeless songs with unknown origins and infinite possibilities. The abstract artworks have the depth and strength of stone combined with the weightlessness of air and space. The alternating erasure and endurance of her mark making\, the piercing luminosity of her colors and the powerful scale of the artworks are all infused by Luo with a lightness of being. SUMMARY:MILLICENT YOUNG | Alter Altar
DESCRIPTION:Alter Altar is a solo exhibition of sculptures and site-specific installations by Millicent Young.  The exhibit includes seventeen works fabricated over 20 years and installed in two historic barn buildings in Stone Ridge\, New York. These artworks range from loft-filling installations embedded with motion-activated sound to smaller-scaled wall-mounted works that respond to the hand-hewn quality of the vernacular spaces. Young’s work draws on the power of simple materials such as clay\, horsehair\, sticks\, metal and rope to weave\, thread\, stitch\, join\, forge\, hammer\, sculpt\, bind\, and scribe the surrounding environment with a clarity and austerity that elevates the common and creates space for being. The exhibition was reviewed by Nina Chkareuli-Mdivani and published on October 13\, 2023. \nWork included in this exhibition was supported with an Individual Artist grant from the State Council on the Arts/Arts Mid Hudson.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Mango paints in luminous\, celebratory colors with hand-crafted metallic accents\, enabling his muses to glow and shine. SUMMARY:MARTIN WEINSTEIN - Inside | Outside
DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents a solo exhibition of paintings  by Martin Weinstein in the Castello 780 gallery starting on September 16  and running through November 26\, 2023. The exhibition\, entitled Inside | Outside\, considers the layers of space that range from the interior of a room to the wide expanse of the landscape beyond. By working on several sheets of acrylic\, Weinstein isolates these different distances with deft\, gestural brushwork. It is the manipulation of these layers and the ability to “reshuffle” each of them one in front of another that creates confusion as to what is near and what is far away. These layers are in turn encased in a clear\, acrylic box that allows the ambient light to shift and change the colors of paintings while glowing through one another. These sculptural\, illuminated painting boxes act as containers that hold a period of time as well as an ever-changing kaleidoscope of space.

DESCRIPTION:BRIAN DICKERSON | Constructed Paintings & Drawings is a solo exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Brian Dickerson opening with a reception for the artist at Lightforms Gallery in Hudson\, NY. on July 15\, 2023\, 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Dickerson’s paintings are structured from aggregated surfaces\, rich with energetic brushwork\, that envelope built-in elements. The raised edges act as bridges\, buttresses and apertures that at once tip and balance as their silhouettes continuously change with the ambient light. Lengthening and shortening shadows invite meditation as the viewer dwells in the crevasses only to emerge again to travel nimbly between narrow ledges and mysterious angles. DESCRIPTION:From May 27 to June 20\, the art space of the Milk Factory presents a group exhibition titled “(With)in or (With)out – The Significances of Borders and Boundaries” with a work by Brian Dickerson. Dickerson’s painting “Vroman” is structured from aggregated surfaces\, rich with energetic brushwork\, that envelope built-in elements. These constructed ridges create sharp shadows that change as the viewer’s gaze shifts from left to right\, and from up to down. The raised edges act as bridges\, buttresses and apertures that at once tip and balance as their silhouettes continuously change with the ambient light. Lengthening and shortening shadows invite meditation as the viewer dwells in the crevasses only to emerge again to travel nimbly between narrow ledges and mysterious angles. SUMMARY:Kaethe Kauffman: Workshop at Castello 925
DESCRIPTION:Since the ’90s\, Kaethe Kauffman has worked with the female body studying and documenting its movement and creating out of this performative process\, a series of abstracted images. These artworks\, inspired by the practice of yoga\, investigate the theme of freedom by challenging the objectification by society of women’s bodies. Using string dipped in paint\, the artist ties the filament around a hand\, knee\, elbow\, or torso\, and when the body part is flexed\, the movement is recorded as an off-printing of paint on skin. In Kauffman’s art\, the body writes itself upon its own skin in a ritual of self-revelation. This act of marking and exposure is documented by Kauffman’s photographic images\, which are digitally repeated and colored\, drawn upon by hand in a variety of media and the vibrant results are printed on silk much like the large banners found in Buddhist temples. In an expansion of the body’s own “speech” through movement\, Kaethe Kauffman’s images combine into larger fields of replication and mirroring\, until the individual body is subsumed into a larger vision. \nKaethe Kauffman’s solo exhibition Yoga: Interiore Eterno at Castello 925\, Venice Italy will feature a workshop about abstraction and movement involving audience members.\nDuring this workshop the audience will have the opportunity to become a both a model for the artist and a participant in her creative process.

This is the second year that contemporary sculpture has been installed at Kaatsbaan for the Summer Festival season. Curated by Hilary Greene\, the artworks complement the ongoing dance\, music\, poetry\, and culinary arts summer programming. This year’s participating artists are: Emil Alzamora\, Stuart Farmery\, Tristan Fitch\, Jared Handelsman\, Kenichi Hiratsuka\, Lowell Miller\, Portia Munson\, Shelley Parriott\, Eileen M. Power\, Gregory Steel\, Christina Tenaglia\, and Millicent Young.\nThe sculpture exhibition originated in 2021 in response to the Pandemic as Kaatsbaan moved its events outdoors so both artists and audience could safely experience Kaatsbaan’s world class dance and music performances. Exhibition curator Hilary Greene envisioned the artworks as multi- dimensional participants that activate and enhance the lush historic grounds.\nFocusing on mid-career sculptors\, Ms. Greene selected artworks that best embodied the spirit and flow of the Hudson Valley’s unique landscape and the joy of rhythm and movement. DESCRIPTION:Alvin Roy is a mid-career painter and sculptor who lives and works in Houston\, Texas. Roy has exhibited extensively notably as part of the national tour “Southern Journeys: African American Artists of the South” (2012). Alvin Roy’s abstract paintings from torn painted paper are inspired by the quilting tradition passed down by the women in his family and his wall sculptures are deep spiritual icons embodying the power of Egyptian myth and ancient archetypes. Alvin Roy’s abstract artworks will be on view in Bridgehampton\, NY from August 11 – 14\, 2022 and in New York City during the Art on Paper Fair Sept. 8 – 11\, 2022 at Pier 36. This virtual exhibition is a response to the difficulties that artists have faced getting their work viewed during the Pandemic.

SUMMARY:Martin Weinstein: Vedute Palinsesti
DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents a solo exhibition of paintings by Martin Weinstein in their sister gallery\, Castello 780 opening 20 April and running through 10 July\, 2022. The exhibition\, titled Vedute Palinsesti\, refers to the traces left behind after earlier writing is effaced to make room for newer writing in medieval manuscripts. Martin Weinstein presents different stages of seeing by painting on layers of acrylic and allowing the layers to re-combine together and glow through one another. These paintings at first glance\, seem rooted in the landscape tradition however the artworks represent perceptions that together become an individual record of space and being. In his solo exhibition\, Vedute Palinsesti\, the combined images are painted in multiple sessions of direct observation from Weinstein’s rented studio in Castello\, Venezia at different times\, different days – and sometimes even years apart – yet always from the same point of view. The final layer\, placed in the back\, is an abstract panel that supports the realistic layers above signifying the ultimate unknowability of reality that underpins all perception. These multiple sheets of acrylic record a period of time\, experience and memory and acknowledge that all these perceptions are illusory. Richard Vine\, managing editor of Art in America has written that\, “although the results are deceptively traditional-looking landscapes\, the process and the pictorial technique are quietly radical.”

This exhibition was on view in New York City in 2021 and travels to Venice\, IT April 20 – July 10\, 2022 at Castello 925 during the Venice Biennale. \nBased on both astronomy and astrology\, Moline-Kramer’s mixed-media star chart paintings are individual portraits revealing and pointing to the power a singular person possesses to have a wide-reaching positive impact on our humanity that changes the until then anticipated course of history. \nTogether with painter Antonio Pauciulo\, Bobbie Moline-Kramer’s installation is on view from April 20 – July 10\, 2022.
