SUMMARY:WET / LAND
DESCRIPTION:Wet/Land was created in response to the degradation of the Esopus creek\, a main tributary of the Hudson River in New York State\, which runs brown for months at a time due to muddy water released by NYCs Dept Of Environmental Protection. Eco-artist Christy Rupp notes that increased climate events have contributed to the dramatic change in the water ecosystem. “I felt the need to collect and document the mud coming down the creek as a result of NYC’s Department of Environmental Protection’s cost cutting decision not to separate the clean water bound for NYC faucets from that of downstream communities located below the Ashokan Reservoir.” Residents of affected communities have noted that as unstable weather events have increased\, the water has steadily become more laden with silt\, contributing to the deterioration of the Esopus as a healthy ecosystem\, resulting in the disruption of breeding cycles and the loss of biodiversity . \nChristy Rupp’s sculptures mimic the appearance and behavior of resident indicator species of filter feeding organisms like Mayflies\, snails and leeches. She then submerges these artworks into the Esopus Creek for a few weeks to make manifest what is only guessed at: that the fine particles of mud are slowly suffocating vulnerable aquatic life. \nLearn more here \nKristen Garnier\, an herbaria artist\, exhibits native plants that present this ecological dilemma from a botanical point of view.

SUMMARY:Anne Hieronymus: Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition of a selection of collages and drawings\, is described by the artist as debris fields of torn and repurposed paper decorations\, printed wrapping paper\, stickers and broken up press-type. Some have been transmuted into the large colored pencil drawings also on view.  Hieronymus makes her drawings on large sheets of bright white gessoed paper\, and the pencils are shaded from deep black to very light pastels. Layers of stylistically foreign visual material intermingle and overlap in an explosion of activity\, almost chaotic; that surprisingly creates an unexpected and reassuring inner calm. DESCRIPTION:This Summer\, contemporary sculptures have joined the Kaatsbaan Cultural Park for the 2021 season. Starting May 20 with the Kaatsbaan Spring Festival\, the artworks will complement the dance\, music\, poetry\, visual and culinary arts programming planned for the upcoming seasonal events.  The participating artists are: Emil Alzamora\, Stuart Farmery\, Tristan Fitch\, Anthony H. Garner\, Jared Handelsman\, Kenichi Hiratsuka\, Bernard Klevickas\, Portia Munson\, Shelley Parriott\, Eileen M. Power\, Gregory Steel\, Christina Tenaglia\, and Millicent Young. \nJen Dragon\, of Cross Contemporary Partners\, together with Hilary Greene of Kaatsbaan Cultural Park\, have curated an outdoor sculpture exhibition to accompany the Kaatsbaan Spring Festival. Taking place throughout the 2021 summer season throughout Kaatsbaan’s lush 153-acre campus in the Hudson Valley\, the artwork will complement the dance\, music\, poetry\, visual and culinary arts programming planned for this event and other upcoming performances.\nDragon and Greene focused on mid-career sculptors whose work embodies the movement and flow of the Hudson Valley’s natural landscape. From carved stone pillars\, to painted wooden forms\, silk banners to cast bronze\, horsehair and grapevines to ladders\, the exhibition at Kaatsbaan displays a wide vocabulary of contemporary sculpture. \nHilary Greene\, who is also a Kaatsbaan Board Member\, noted\, “Last summer Kaatsbaan had the wonderful vision to create an outdoor stage as a venue to liberate world-class dancers to perform in front of live audiences with magnificent views of trees\, mountains\, and sky. The art and the audience’s response to it felt like salvation during very difficult times.”\n“The Summer Festival was a truly seminal event for Kaatsbaan\, the Hudson Valley\, and the world of dance. It’s very exciting for the Spring Festival to continue the new tradition of outdoor performances while adding world-class sculpture\, food\, and music to nourish our souls\,” she added. \nAbout Kaatsbaan Cultural Park: The mission of Kaatsbaan Cultural Park is to provide an extraordinary environment for cultural innovation and excellence. SUMMARY:Peter Cusack Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In his current paintings\, Peter Cusack explores themes of human identity\, sexuality\, consciousness\, and crisis\, illuminating the hidden psychological realities of everyday life. Heroic male and female figures live their lives beyond the view of ordinary society\, revealing interior monologues of desire\, longing\, rejection\, ambiguity\, fear\, and despair – but without shame\, inhibition\, or the need to conceal. Cusack’s emotional insight\, technical skill\, and freedom from convention make these revelations possible. His subjects are intriguing and deeply complex; the roles and rituals they portray can be recognized from our shared experiences. The echoes of the art of past centuries enrich his imagery\, but these representations appear fresh\, spontaneous\, and honest. His hand is confident and his intuitions are sound. Cusack never starts with a preliminary drawing for either his watercolors or oils\, which give his work immediacy\, vitality and transparency. Every impulse in his process becomes a visible record; beginning with a few quick strokes\, he allows hands-on use of the materials and his own compulsion to move the process forward. Large oil paintings\, diptychs\, and triptychs are his favored formats\, in part for their associations with the Church and their place in art history\, the study of which eventually led Cusack to painting. The divisions also have a practical function because he conceives each panel not only as part of the whole but also a complete work of art in itself. Delegating his figures to a separate field but with multiple correspondences\, this pictorial scheme permits him to isolate their individual psychology in a more focused way\, which amplifies\, clarifies and enriches their interactions. Even the watercolor of a mundane subject may convey dark overtones and resonances\, yet nothing looks overworked or contrived. Producing watercolors as an ongoing record of everyday events in and around a country house\, his style is fast and loose using a palette based on primary colors\, with splashes of deep purple\, dark green\, or black. Chopping garlic\, napping with the dog\, a table set up for a dinner party\, a glimpse of the house from afar: they all convey the essence of a fleeting moment in a life well-lived. In spite of Cusack’s vague or ambiguous titles\, the characters in his dramas come across as real people in real situations\, and it is the strength and resonances of Cusack’s images that makes a narrative possible for the viewer to construct. His subjects\, their imposing and memorable presence\, are realized with unstrained effort through the use of form and color alone.

SUMMARY:Deborah Masters: Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Masters’ large sculpture exhibition entitled “Spirits”\, feature heads that measure up to five feet in height and are suspended from the Mary G.Hardin Cultural Center gallery ceiling by chains. They stare out at us impassively\, silently dwelling in their own consciousness. These monumental sculptural heads are joined by other artwork created in a more intimate scale: “Little Spirits” smaller sculptures of human and animal heads and “Crosses” which combine religious\, personal\, and social imagery. Since the 1990s\, public and private commissions brought Masters’ work to a wider audience. For over 30 years\, her work outside the studio has reflected her social consciousness and concerns for the environment\, and she has received national awards and recognition in these leadership roles.

SUMMARY:Deborah Masters: Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Masters’ large sculpture exhibition entitled “Spirits”\, feature heads that measure up to five feet in height and are suspended from the Mary G.Hardin Cultural Center gallery ceiling by chains. They stare out at us impassively\, silently dwelling in their own consciousness. These monumental sculptural heads are joined by other artwork created in a more intimate scale: “Little Spirits” smaller sculptures of human and animal heads and “Crosses” which combine religious\, personal\, and social imagery. Since the 1990s\, public and private commissions brought Masters’ work to a wider audience. For over 30 years\, her work outside the studio has reflected her social consciousness and concerns for the environment\, and she has received national awards and recognition in these leadership roles.
