SUMMARY:RURI YI
DESCRIPTION:Yi presents a basic unit or form inspired by daily life\, urban space\, and the natural landscape. The Eq. or Equilibrium Series explores the function of a single defined shape\, deployed by the artist in marching arrangements where a grid of like forms is punctuated by contrasting colors. Yi has described this shape as a racetrack\, and it appears as a capsule\, neither flat nor three-dimensional. The elongated oval creates a sense of speed\, suggesting an entity in constant motion\, circles straining against their borders to fill all available space on the canvas. \nYi’s vivid palette is alternated with compositions dominated by black pigment\, where the black provides an optical metric to understand the balance of color throughout the painting. \nSeemingly monochromatic application of paint defies an appearance of flatness\, with colors placed adjacent to each other\, demonstrating how a color can change the feeling of a space and fully occupy the visual field of the viewer. It is this field that concerns Yi – her purpose is to reflect the viewer’s perspective and perceptions. \n\n\nRuri Yi (b. South Korea\, 1969) lives and works in Baltimore\, Maryland. She graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia\, PA). Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. In 2018 Yi founded Mono Practice\, a gallery in Baltimore\, Maryland. This is the artist’s first exhibition at HEMPHILL.

SUMMARY:Julie Wolfe: Opposing Forces
DESCRIPTION:HEMPHILL is pleased to announce the exhibition\, JULIE WOLFE: Opposing Forces\, opening on Saturday\, September 10\, 2022 with a reception from 6-8pm. The exhibition will remain on view through October 29\, 2022. \nJulie Wolfe’s work is rooted in the practice of gathering images and data to explore the world around us\, but more importantly\, the inner worlds of the self. Wolfe guides the viewer on a journey of transformation through richly conceived systems of color\, form\, and language that often serve as markers of time and place. It is fitting that the artist introduces us to her newest body of work at a time when the James Webb Space Telescope has provided humanity with our deepest and clearest views of the universe to date. By reflecting 13.1 billion years of light back to Earth\, scientists have illuminated the farthest reaches of the cosmos for us to collectively study. It is impossible to resist meditating on our relationship to those distant stars while faced with the magnitude of information in these telescope images. \nIn Opposing Forces\, Julie Wolfe continues the investigation of dichotomies in the natural and man-made worlds. By creating relationships between seemingly disparate elements\, the artist asks viewers to ponder larger concepts of consciousness\, perception\, and their very existence within the expanding universe. Through this practice of seeking\, Wolfe guides her audience toward a greater sense of meaning and order in an age that feels more like science fiction. Visual references and themes seen throughout the artist’s career are re-examined in this body of work and serve to build upon those concepts. Julie Wolfe creates a space for viewers to stretch their perceptions; to conquer the pressing question of existence while also acknowledging that ultimately\, the universe defies reason. \nJulie Wolfe (American\, born 1963) is a visual and conceptual artist living and working in Washington\, DC. Her work is exhibited and collected internationally and has been featured in ARTnews\, BBC America and Hyperallergic. She recently completed a site-specific commission\, Space Scape\, for the Meta Open Arts collection in Washington DC. Recent exhibitions include Quest for a Third Paradise\, The American University Museum\, Washington\, DC (2017)\, The Color of Light: Utopian Abstractions\, originating at the Rothko Art Centre\, Daugavpils\, Latvia and traveling to L’ancienne évêché\, Uzes\, and Sete\, France (2021). Previous exhibitions at HEMPHILL include Wildfires and Dreamfields (2020)\, Under Their Gaze\, We Become Creatures (2019)\, The Language of the Birds (2016)\, Rewilding (2013) and Julie Wolfe (2010). Wolfe received a BFA in Painting and Art History from The University of Texas\, Austin\, TX.

SUMMARY:Robert Novel Paintings
DESCRIPTION:HEMPHILL is pleased to present the paintings of Robert Novel in a solo exhibition opening on Saturday\, July 9\, with opening hours from 12-5pm. The exhibition will be on view from July 9 – August 13\, 2022. \nThroughout the last decade\, Robert Novel completed over one hundred and fifty paintings in a limited palette ranging from white to soft gray to black\, often incorporating raw canvas or linen as a compositional element of the work. The nuance and rawness of the visible linen or canvas contrasts the flat application of pigment and the strength of the geometric forms. Novel’s reflection on geometric abstraction and the unfolding experimentation of a single variation from one painting to the next brings a deep feeling of calm\, and the repetition of visual motifs becomes a performance. \nWith a background in sculpture and a love for minimalist forms\, refined architectural spaces\, and modern design\, Novel was influenced by artists of the Light & Space movement and the reductive qualities of the painters of the Washington Color School when he arrived in Washington in the late 1960s. \nRobert Novel (American\, 1943-2021) was born in New York City\, studied painting and sculpture at the School of Visual Arts\, New York\, and printmaking at the Printmaker’s Workshop in Washington DC. He participated in Art Now 74 at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, where he collaborated with artist Robert Irwin on the installation of a site-specific work. The following year in 1975\, a solo show at Hard Art Gallery in Washington\, DC featured Novel’s sculpture and video art\, and his sculpture was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In 1976\, he participated as a member of the Sponsors Committee for the opening of P.S. 1 in Long Island City\, New York. Novel’s work was exhibited at P Street Gallerie\, Washington DC in the exhibition Translation Not Required in 2015\, and at Gensler Architects\, Washington DC in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC – HEMPHILL is pleased to announce the exhibition Colby Caldwell: over & under\, opening on Saturday\, May 14\, 2022 and on view through June 25\, 2022. \nover & under implores us to go out into nature. “Get out there! Go and see what you’re missing! Remember what you have forgotten!” However\, Colby Caldwell is not asking us to do so as we have in the past. Technology has changed immensely in the last century and even since the start of the new millennium. Looking down at our phones\, we are inundated with imagery of the natural world. Nature has become a far-fetched idea\, something we must go out of our way to seek and engage with. over & under preserves an environment we have come to discount and ignore. With this disregard we have developed\, the bold photographs in the exhibition allow us to reconsider our relationship with that which sustains us. \nIn previous bodies of work\, Colby Caldwell bridged the gap between representation and abstraction\, often bringing organic objects into his studio to shoot.  Over the last two years\, Caldwell has traversed the forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains armed with a collection of flatbed scanners as his camera\, noticing nuances we are so quick to dismiss: fuzzy green moss blanketing root systems\, and abandoned leaves tumbling into intricate mosaics. Moving over the forest floor and tracing lines of trees\, Caldwell has recorded the natural world with the unnatural light emitted by the scanner. He continues to push what it means to be a photographer by recording his surroundings in curious ways. The discernable pieces of information in over & under are distorted\, jumbled and inherently mystifying. While the scanner abstracts imagery\, the final product presents us with the truth of our surroundings through the digital lens of the world today. \nCaldwell’s work is included in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, TX\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Washington DC\, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, New Orleans\, LA. Caldwell received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in 1990 and currently lives and works in Asheville\, NC.

SUMMARY:Rush Baker IV: American Sunset
DESCRIPTION:American Sunset is politically charged. Reflecting upon the cause and effect of abolitionist John Brown’s 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry which accelerated the nation into civil war\, Baker has created a cycle of paintings conjured from a process where representation generates abstraction. Large and colorful\, both beautiful and terrifying\, his paintings possess the currents of emotional energy felt within the present-day fight for social justice. Baker interleaves the events and geography of Harper’s Ferry with textural applications of acrylic material\, varying between matte and glossy\, dark and light. The bits and pieces of representational content still visible in his work are caught in a storm of spinning\, broken alternately disappearing and reappearing parts. Although the show references a historical event\, it could not be more of the present. Baker’s ability to depict this maelstrom from an observer’s distance places the viewer in the calm at the eye of a storm. A position where the question arises; “how will you respond when the next wall of the storm overtakes us?” Like exhibitions of other great political artworks\, American Sunset is both lamentation and inspiration. \nRush Baker IV (American\, b. 1987) has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally\, including solo exhibitions at Scaramouche Gallery and The Cooper Union in New York City\, Honfleur Gallery in Washington DC\, and in group shows at The Third Line Gallery in Dubai\, The Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte\, NC\, Bowie State University\, MOCADA in Brooklyn\, NY\, Koki Arts in Tokyo\, and Yale University. American Sunset is the artist’s second solo exhibition at HEMPHILL. He received a BFA from The Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in 2009 where he received the Jack Stewart Memorial Prize for Excellence in Painting\, and an MFA from Yale University in 2012\, where he received the Elizabeth Canfield Hicks Award for outstanding achievement in drawing or painting from nature. Baker lives and works in Hyattsville\, MD.

DESCRIPTION:HEMPHILL is pleased to announce the exhibition\, WILLEM de LOOPER: Paintings 1968 – 1972\, opening on Saturday\, January 15\, 2022. The exhibition will remain on view through February 26\, 2022. \nTo expand the public’s understanding of the significance of Willem de Looper’s contribution to the Washington Color School\, HEMPHILL has partnered with the Frauke and Willem de Looper Foundation to showcase eleven paintings created between 1968 and 1972. Largely pulled from storage\, and unseen by the public for many years\, these works must be experienced in person to fully appreciate their immersive effect on the viewer. \nThe impact of the Washington Color School on mid-20th century art history is undeniably significant\, but this understanding is not complete without recognizing the contributions of Willem de Looper. Younger than other artists associated with the development of the movement\, de Looper’s inclusion in a 1968 Jefferson Place Gallery 10th Anniversary exhibition alongside Gene Davis\, Thomas Downing\, and Sam Gilliam to name a few\, marks his membership in the group. The visual quality of de Looper’s canvases\, with their flooded surfaces of impossibly thinned acrylic paint\, in conversation with the batik-like stained works of Sam Gilliam made at the same time/of the same period\, illustrates the two artists’ distinct yet complimentary approaches to color field painting. Rather than rely on the gestural\, de Looper sought to create purely atmospheric experiences with his layered fields of color. Willem de Looper’s seminal stained paintings were an important contribution to the non-representational painting which defines the Washington Color School. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue including essay by Kristen Hileman\, Independent Curator.

DESCRIPTION:We knew Linling Lu was extraordinary the moment her work arrived on June 17\, 2011 for inclusion in a show at Carroll Square\, a space where we often tested the work of younger artists. She has since attracted greater and greater attention. She has been commissioned for multiple site-specific projects involving dozens of paintings\, has sold out exhibitions\, and nearly every work coming out of her studio is spoken for. Recent press coverage describes Linling as a “super star.” Long before deciding the gallery’s new location at 434 K Street\, we knew we would inaugurate the space with a show by Linling Lu. No other artist could better conquer an untested exhibition space. No other artist would show off the architecture of the new gallery to such a degree. No other artist would generate as much excitement. \nLu is an irrepressible talent who takes her audience to the next level in her work. Her precise\, yet unpredictable color choices surpass any previous artists’s theory and feeling for palette. Seeing the exhibition is to experience an expanding realization of color possibilities. The installation is sequenced differently than the typical gallery show; Lu juxtaposes her iconic large-scale circular paintings with oval arrangements of multiple works commanding entire walls. Lu studied both classical piano and landscape architecture\, and this show demonstrates her gift for architectonic statements with allusions to musical composition. \n\n\nPress releases\, including this one\, are tasked with proclaiming and projecting an artist’s past and future career success. There are greater aspects to Lu’s effort. She claims no space for personal expression and makes no plea for admiration. Her work is generous in character; it is universal. Everything about Lu’s practice pushes the viewer to consider life outside of the self. Through her extraordinary discipline\, Lu focuses our attention on an exterior experience. In that experience we attain a heightened sense of awareness.

SUMMARY:JULIE WOLFE: Under Their Gaze\, We Become Creatures
DESCRIPTION:We are distressed by the daily cycle of hateful and self-serving rhetoric. It skews us into unfulfilling reactions. We are out-of-whack. We fight to avoid turning off. Though ill-at-ease\, there is hope of something blooming from our better nature. In a small and special part of our society a growing number of artists are speaking of redress and solace. In their work we can find the energy to turn back on. It is at this moment\, within these circumstances\, that the gallery presents the fourth Julie Wolfe exhibition. To quote the artist\, “After the election some dark things became more apparent. My awareness has been heightened. Along with many others\, I am concerned about the social and cultural impact of this sort of spiritual crisis\, about the lack of truth. Through my work I am finding ways to cope and be hopeful. The upcoming show is a response. The show contains works from three series. There is the confrontational character of the ‘Under Their Gaze\, We Become Creatures’ series. In the landscapes from the ‘Venus: Site Specific’ series there is an otherworldliness. And in the ‘Magnitude of Equality’ paintings the gravity defying effects of the color and gray scale studies speak of the power of diversity and equality.” \n\n\nThe artist describes her show as a response to current events\, but none of the works in Under Their Gaze\, We Become Creatures are didactic. Each piece carefully provokes thoughts of potential catastrophe\, present dangers\, or feelings of dislocation. Yet the show is colorful\, hopeful. We experience a sense of generosity in the artist’s viewpoint. “I hope you find something to respond to\, something to contemplate\, to remember\, something that opens up in you.” Great artworks are machines of perpetual motion. They move us from tradition\, responding in the present\, pushing us towards the future. The artist reminds us that art is always connected to society.

SUMMARY:HEDIEH JAVANSHIR ILCHI: I surrender to you\, ashen lands and blue skies
DESCRIPTION:Moving to an aerial view\, observing from a distance\, there may be no such thing as a cultural war. There may only be a process\, a moment in an ever-evolving world of cultural forces. Although this viewpoint does not champion good or evil\, it does acknowledge movement and outcome. The paintings of Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi arise from cultures often portrayed at war. Each culture measures itself by a different clock. Each respective clock sometimes runs faster than the other\, then slower\, sometimes backward and then again forward. The clocks rarely synchronize\, until the conflicts are spent and the two clocks merge. Ilchi’s work takes us to an aerial viewpoint where we see traditional Persian imagery merging with modernist American painting techniques. The content is not in conflict\, but there is sense of broken parts coming together and things from a past appearing in a present. Contrary to our times\, where a speeding flow of expedient information engulfs everything\, Ilchi asks us to step back\, slow down\, take the aerial view. From this vantage point we see intricately executed tazhib patterns\, sometimes floating over and at other times captured within scenes of organic chaos. Chaos created by the layering of translucencies\, controlled pours and the topographical accumulations of paint. It is as though we are witnessing the reactions of chemical components. It takes time to comprehend the dazzling luminosities of her paintings\, to see the merging of two cultures. Yet Ilchi’s work is not of an ideal state\, there is a sense of trouble in her pictures\, an apprehension of beauty\, and a pining wishful-ness for the outcomes we are moving towards. \n\n\nHedieh Javanshir Ilchi was born in 1981 in Tehran\, Iran and currently lives and works in the Washington DC area. Ilchi received a BFA with honors from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in 2006 and an MFA in Studio Art from the American University in 2011. She has been awarded residencies at the Ucross Foundation\, Vermont Studio Center\, The Jentel Foundation\, and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. She has exhibited in New York\, Switzerland\, Washington DC and Winston- Salem\, NC and her work is included in several private and public collections. The various media are interwoven\, at odds\, and chaotic\, slowly revealing compositions of destruction. There are hints of collapsing columns\, drones shot down from the sky\, Soviet propaganda posters\, comic books\, fallen structures\, fire\, rocks\, and finally\, ash. At times\, Baker delivers a break in the rubble\, leaving us with a moment to exhale\, observe and ask\, “is this the beginning or the end?” \nFascinated by political theater and the socio-economic ramifications of domestic and foreign policy\, Baker cites structural breakdown as a recurring theme within his practice. If these paintings can engage with the world today\, it is through the complex feeling of vulnerability stirring everywhere\, every minute. Outside of societal unrest\, Baker is heavily influenced by Octavia Butler’s Afrofuturist novels\, most notably Parable of the Sower. He has linked his work to Black abstraction and artists such as Sam Gilliam\, Felrath Hines\, and Jack Whitten. Each canvas serves as a new edition of an ongoing battle\, a commonly shared saga of conflict and discontent. \n\n\nRushern Baker IV (American\, b. 1987) has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally\, including solo exhibitions at Scaramouche Gallery and The Cooper Union in New York City\, Honfleur Gallery in Washington DC\, and in group shows at The Third Line Gallery in Dubai\, The Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte\, NC\, Bowie State University\, MOCADA in Brooklyn\, NY\, Koki Arts in Tokyo\, and Yale University. He received a BFA from The Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in 2009 where he received the Jack Stewart Memorial Prize for Excellence in Painting\, and an MFA from Yale University in 2012\, where he received the Elizabeth Canfield Hicks Award for outstanding achievement in drawing or painting from nature. This is his first solo exhibition with HEMPHILL Fine Arts.

SUMMARY:Photographs from the Tom Birch Collection
DESCRIPTION:There is something inherently strange about a photograph: its pretense of veracity\, the illusion of an unpremeditated subject\, and the feeling of an unmediated presence. Herein lies the beauty of the medium and the opportunity for collecting photographs to become an adventure. A collection of photographs can tell us many things. In the best photography collections\, each photograph is a knot on a thread leading to ever deeper and more penetrating experiences of beauty. Sometimes it is an elusive beauty captured from the real world. Other times beauty is exposed within something boring\, horrible or shocking\, revealed by the craft of the photographer and the willingness of the viewer to engage. \nThe Tom Birch Collection tells us he collected fearlessly\, always reaching for the next new beauty. In reviewing personal collections one becomes used to seeing the predictable pantomiming of the reassuring qualities of the museum’s canon. One sees collections based on themes that barely recognize the inner dynamic of individual artworks. Some collections reflect only the desire to soothe\, never to challenge\, when so much more can be experienced. It is clear Tom Birch was spurred onward by a willingness to explore the widest range of what photography had to offer. This manner of collecting nudges the idea of taste away from a fixed set of rules into an evolving narrative of personal discovery. For Tom\, each photograph is a moment on a clock spinning backwards through his life\, telling him of the places his consciousness occupied before and then after acquiring each picture. \nSome collections are broken up among heirs\, some rightly go to institutions\, and others are sold. In the selling of the Birch collection there is the goal of setting the artworks free to travel into the hearts and minds of other people\, expanding their experiences of strange and wonderful beauty. Now\, it is time for each of the photographs to become milestones in other collectors’ lives.

DESCRIPTION:A devoted student of the natural sublime\, portraiture\, and visual criticism\, Connecticut-born artist James Britton gave his life to art. He was a prolific writer and note taker\, keeping detailed journals of his observations and notes on his life. These writings have compelled curators and historians to revisit his work\, having fallen into relative obscurity after his death in 1936\, a victim of ailing health and poverty. Despite his meager financial resources\, he used whatever tools and materials were available to him\, at times using scraps of cereal boxes as canvases for his paintings. He held a deep affection for the splendor of the New England countryside\, from Connecticut to New York\, and focused primarily on these subjects in the later years of his life. The 10 works on view in James Britton highlight the artist’s command of paint and light. None larger than a sheet of paper\, each painting reveals itself to be an exquisite object\, inviting closer inspection. Through this small survey of his later works\, we are given a glimpse into the artist’s celebration of the American Northeast of the 1920s and 30s. \n\n\nJames Britton (1878 – 1936) was born in Hartford\, Connecticut. Active in New York and New England from the 1900s to the 1930s\, Britton was well known as both an artist and a writer. In New York\, Britton formed an exhibiting group of artists called The Eclectics\, which included at times Maurice Prendergast\, George Luks\, Philip L. Hale and Theresa Bernstein. His work was exhibited regularly in New York City\, Connecticut\, Boston\, and Gloucester\, Massachusetts.  In addition to his published writings in American ART News and other periodicals and journals\, Britton maintained diaries over some 30 years. Britton’s papers are now at the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art. In 2005\, James Britton: Connecticut Artist\, was assembled at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London\, CT. His work is included in such collections as the Wadsworth Atheneum\, the New Britain Museum of American Art\, the Florence Griswold Museum\, The Mark Twain House and Museum\, The Parrish Art Museum\, and The New York Public Library. This show marks the first time the work of James Britton has been exhibited in Washington\, DC.
