DESCRIPTION:The exhibition\, When We All Stand\, focuses on the collective power of the arts to address complex issues in society and demonstrates the ability of art and artists to chart a path for social change.  Artists often lead the charge and expose truths that may otherwise be ignored. The artists in this exhibition take a stand and call out injustices through their art and activism on issues such as immigration\, gender\, reproductive rights\, mass incarceration\, voting rights\, racial bias\, gun violence and promises unfulfilled. They take action by creating national campaigns for justice\, organizing public art protests\, connecting with their local community\, or joining forces with national organizations. Some make demands on government\, politicians\, policies\, or institutions while others make demands on society and individuals to join them in the fight for justice; still others focus on cultural development as a process that cultivates democracy and unity. The Naked City…Iconic names to describe an iconic metropolis\, a city of myth and legend\, where dreams rise as high as skyscrapers and can fall just as far. Yet beyond the silhouetted skyline is a place where New Yorkers actually live\, work\, love\, struggle\, and survive. \n  \nThese photographs from the Hofstra University Museum of Art collection capture New York City in its infinite complexity and variety\, not only celebrating the city’s iconic architecture\, but reveling in its everyday streets and signage\, authentic faces\, and dynamic street scenes. The black-and-white images were made over a span of 75 years\, from 1932 to 2008\, yet are unified through the use of monochrome\, creating connections between disparate decades. While the photographers are not all native New Yorkers\, they are inheritors of this miraculous city\, dedicated to seeking its intricacies\, grandeur\, joy\, and hardships. Their distinct visions unfold in New York’s ever-changing landscape\, chronicling a city that reinvents itself on a daily basis. \nFunding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. \n  \nAdmission is free.

DESCRIPTION:A print\, in the broadest definition\, is a work of art comprised of ink on paper created through an indirect transfer process.  Four major printmaking methods have been developed over the centuries: relief\, intaglio\, and the planographic techniques of lithography and screenprinting. Each printmaking method produces a work on paper that has an individual and identifiable quality. \n  \nOff the Press features works from the Hofstra University Museum of Art collection and provides examples of these four printmaking techniques.  The collection contains more than 2\,200 prints in a range of mediums and processes that date from the late 16th century to the 21st century.  As printmaking techniques have developed over the centuries\, artists have explored the possibilities and pushed the boundaries of traditional printmaking.  Digital technology has added additional pathways for this artistic exploration. \n  \nFunding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. \n  \nAdmission is free.

The Dogon live in one of West Africa’s most spectacular landscapes\, a row of cliffs known as the Bandiagara Escarpment\, located in the central plateau region of Mali. Their complex mythology and sophisticated visual arts capture the imagination. DESCRIPTION:Drawing Matters explores the importance of drawing by hand in the current technological age where computer-aided design and photographic replication are so accessible. Cross-discipline by design\, the exhibition includes drawings from the Museum’s collection\, botanical and scientific illustrations\, and engineering and architectural drawings. The Museum’s drawings range from the 18th to the 21st centuries and include a wide variety of styles from representational to abstract. The scientific illustrations will include taxonomic descriptions of species and how they are used in research and publication. SUMMARY:Live from London: the Lubaina Himid exhibition at the Tate Modern
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Merrill\, PhD.\, Professor of Performance Studies\, Rhetoric and Public Advocacy Program\, Department of Writing Studies and Rhetoric at Hofstra University\, for a virtual conversation\, live from London\, discussing the Lubaina Himid exhibition\, which is on view at the Tate Modern from November 25\, 2021 to July 3\, 2022. Professor Merrill is a contributor to the exhibition catalogue. \nThe Lubaina Himid exhibition\, including recent work and selections from throughout her career\, takes inspiration from Himid’s interest in theater and unfolds in a sequence of scenes designed to place visitors centerstage and backstage. Initially trained in theater design\, Himid is known for her innovative approaches to painting and to social engagement. She has been pivotal in the UK since the 1980s for her contributions to the British Black arts movement\, making space for the expression and recognition of Black experience and women’s creativity. Over the last decade\, she has earned international recognition for her figurative paintings\, which explore overlooked and invisible aspects of history and of contemporary everyday life. In 2017\, she was awarded the Turner Prize and in 2018 she was bestowed with the honorary title of CBE for her contributions to the arts. \nProfessor Merrill is a performance and cultural historian\, specializing in 19th century performances and social issues on stage and in the streets. She applies her research and publications about performance history and critical race and cultural studies\, and spectatorship\, to a range of cultural artifacts\, artworks\, and performances. Currently Professor Merrill’s work on Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid’s “Memorial to Zong” is part of an exhibition at Lancaster Maritime Museum. \nAdmission is free.
