DESCRIPTION:Location: 15 Rutherford Place between 2nd and 3rd Avenues \nPrint Center New York is pleased to present a new performance of Bethany Collins’s project America: A Hymnal\, which offers a chronological retelling of American history\, politics\, and culture through one song. Over time\, “My Country ’Tis of Thee” (also known as “America”) has seen its title and lyrics re-written at least 100 times in support of passionately held causes—from temperance and suffrage to abolition and even the Confederacy. \nDuring this one-hour performance at the Fifteenth Street Meetinghouse of The Religious Society of Friends (also known as Quakers)\, singers from The Unsung Collective will sing a single version of the anthem\, “War” from 1862\, in a myriad of musical forms. \nThe Unsung\, directed by Tyrone Clinton\, is a community-based music collective devoted to celebrating stories of the Black experience. They are a non-profit dedicated to serving the local NYC community by expanding the confines of the Western musical canon and fostering educational relationships with those who are “willing to listen.” \nRSVP is strongly encouraged and face masks are required.

DESCRIPTION:On view in-person and online January 20–March 26\, 2022\nClosing Reception: Thursday\, March 24\nVisit www.ipcny.org/unfinished \nInternational Print Center New York (IPCNY) is pleased to announce unfinished: New Prints 2022/Winter juried by Queer.Archive.Work (QAW). For this presentation of IPCNY’s open call exhibition program\, the theme “unfinished” was conceived of by QAW and announced alongside the open call\, soliciting works that stepped away from traditions of polish and perfection and instead expressed incompleteness\, illegibility\, risk\, and queerness\, among other themes. The resulting exhibition presents 49 works by 36 artists from the US and abroad.  \n“Within the loose theme of unfinished\, we push up against capitalism’s relentless drive towards market-based success by making way for other kinds of stories\,” said Queer.Archive.Work founder Paul Soulellis. “unfinished includes actual works-in-progress\, abandoned work\, failed work\, and work that is simply unfinished due to the myriad aspects and conditions artists experience while living and working during crisis—the radical turbulence of racial injustice\, police brutality\, class inequity\, global pandemic\, and climate emergency.”  \nunfinished is the latest presentation of IPCNY’s long-standing New Prints Program\, a biannual open call that supports artists from a wide range of backgrounds and reflects print-based artistic production of the last twelve months. QAW’s selection includes a variety of material and conceptual uses of print\, ranging from works made with traditional techniques such as intaglio and lithography\, to interdisciplinary sculptural works and installations\, to risograph zines. Together\, they explore the possibilities of what QAW calls “the non-linear\, uncertain space of the unfinished” and demonstrate a collective rethinking of labor\, time\, marketability\, and artistic success.  \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, IPCNY will host public programming that includes a guided\, in-person walkthrough\, two online moderated artist conversations\, and an online discussion with QAW. DESCRIPTION:On View June 10–September 18\nGallery Hours: Wednesday–Saturday 11 am –6 pm\nOnline exhibition: http://www.ipcny.org/lonely-hearts \nInternational Print Center New York (IPCNY) presents Lonely Hearts: New Prints 2021/Summer\, an exhibition of 42 new artworks selected by Christiane Baumgartner. “My selection is my very personal statement about the time we are living in\,” Baumgartner commented\, noting the relative scarcity of human presence and sense of desolation that emerged in her selection of works\, all of which were made since the COVID-19 pandemic began. “There is work showing empty streets or empty billboards\, for instance—but there is also abstract or non-figurative work that contains a certain concentration or contemplation.”  \nThis in-person and online exhibition brings together works by 36 artists across the country and internationally. It is the latest presentation of IPCNY’s long-standing New Prints Program\, a biannual open call that supports artists from a wide range of backgrounds and reflects print-based artistic production of the last twelve months. Baumgartner’s selection includes a wide variety of classic printmaking techniques such as woodcut\, drypoint\, and mezzotint\, as well as mixed-media works and print-based videos\, reflecting her interest in works that present traditional methods in a contemporary context.  \nIPCNY’s New Prints Program is a platform for artists from a wide range of backgrounds working in the medium of print. The biannual open call exhibitions feature work created in the preceding twelve months. Juried by stakeholders in the field\, the exhibitions offer snapshots of what artists are contending with in the moment\, lending a sense of immediacy to each presentation. The New Prints Artist Development Program supports exhibiting artists during each cycle\, offering additional career advancement opportunities.

This third presentation of New Prints In Focus highlights work by the two Artists In Residence selected from Give Me Space: New Prints 2020/Summer— Mary Gordon McFall and Golbanou Moghaddas. Each artist completed a “Residency in Place” during the summer of 2020\, working remotely in their home studios with support and funding provided by IPCNY. \nGordon McFall’s Playground Series uses layered monotypes and photo-lithography to explore the abstracted shapes of play structures and the ways in which the nostalgia of play can “anchor us to feelings of home and wellbeing even in the midst of chaos.” Moghaddas’s intimately-scaled etchings are inspired by Iranian poetry and bring characters and themes from those poems into her own life and surroundings.

Revis\, Swoon\, William Villalongo\, and Dáreece J. Walker. Living in America presents a wide range of practices and spotlights the relevance and adaptability of print formats during political upheaval and resistance. Works include conventional printmaking\, mixed media incorporating found printed matter\, and those informed by reproduction and dissemination. New work is shown here for the first time by Elektra KB\, Yashua Klos\, Azikiwe Mohammed\, and Africanus Okokon\, as well as a site-specific stencil installation by Nontsikelelo Mutiti.  \n“These artists bear witness\, through their work\, to transformation—cultural\, material\, and aesthetic—and actively engage each other and their local communities as collaborators and subjects\,” says Assembly Room. “As the public struggles to renew America\, artists are paving the way and showing us how to channel our outrage\, inspire love\, live in hope\, and act with care.” \nAct I: Outrage presents artists channeling rage\, pain\, and despair into their work; Act II: Love explores love as a radical approach to building a more inclusive society; Act III: Hope illuminates forgotten histories and imagines new futures; and Act IV: Care considers artistic practices that center care as acts of self-preservation and political action. Revis\, and David Platzker\, in conversation with Assembly Room \nRegister Now \nThis is precisely the time when artists go to work. — Toni Morrison \nThe year 2020 is among the most pivotal in recent American history\, and we have seen how outrage can be channeled into both political action and artistic practice. \nIn this program\, join artists Elektra KB and Karen Revis\, featured in Living in America\, along with Assembly Room and independent curator David Platzker\, in conversation about print’s long-standing relationship with protest and our most significant historical moments. \nElektra KB is a Brooklyn-based Latinx immigrant artist whose interdisciplinary practice investigates gender\, transculturality\, disability\, and abuses of power. Karen J. Revis is a New York-based artist whose series REVISionary Prints explores her experience growing up in the Black community and celebrates leaders throughout African-American history. \nDavid Platzker\, Director of Specific Object and former Curator of Drawings and Prints\, The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, has worked extensively on prints\, posters\, and artists’ publications of the 1960s and 1970s\, and those that grow out of that era. DESCRIPTION:Artist Chitra Ganesh selected Give Me Space\, the latest presentation of IPCNY’s long-standing New Prints Program\, which supports artists from a wide range of backgrounds and reflects artistic production today and over the last year. We invite you to listen to (or read) Ganesh’s powerful statement on her selections and on the radical and unprecedented shifts of space—both physical and psychic—enacted in our current political moment of spiraling crises of public health and systemic racism. \nGanesh selected 54 works from submissions by over 1\,000 artists\, and identified five overlapping themes that serve as a framework for viewing.
