SUMMARY:What a Wonderful World Opening Reception and Gallery Talk with the Artists
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Phillips Museum of Art for the What a Wonderful World opening reception and gallery talk. This exhibition highlights the environmental art of Binh Danh\, Rena Detrixhe\, Ryan Hoover\, and Marion Wilson. Their work shares common interests in science\, memory\, and the lasting impact of human interactions on the future of our planet. Binh Danh’s daguerreotypes—part nostalgic vision\, part environmental cry—document the natural beauty of the currently protected land in Yosemite National Park. Rena Detrixhe creates dirt rugs using Oklahoma soil\, sifting the collective memories embedded in the dust. Ryan Hoover’s tree forms are created by an algorithm that the artist has written to simulate natural growth patterns. Marion Wilson’s photographs and drawings are often through the lens of ecology\, where her attention has been drawn to the study of stress-tolerant and overlooked plant species that live in micro environments—particularly\, moss. The reception and gallery talk are free and open to all! \nImage credits: Rena Detrixhe; Red Dirt Rug\, 2017\, [installation view]\, 25′ x 40′; installed at Western Michigan University\, Grand Rapids\, MI; Oklahoma soil\, impressed with shoe sole patterns; Photo by Mark Andrus\, Courtesy of the artist

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion including Michele Colburn ’76\, Stephanie Lifshutz ’13\, and Frances Wolf ’96 from “50 Years: A Celebration of F&M’s Alumnae”
DESCRIPTION:Be sure to mark your calendar for a special panel discussion with Michèle Colburn ‘76\, Stephanie Lifshutz ‘13\, and Frances Wolf ’96\, moderated by Sue Washburn ’73. These artists are part of the larger exhibition 50 Years: A Celebration of F&M’s Alumnae Artists that celebrates the 50th anniversary of co-education at F&M by highlighting two alumnae artists from each decade since that historical decision in F&M’s history. The panel discussion will take place in Stahr Auditorium\, Stager Hall and the museum will have extended hours from 5:30 to 7 pm as part of this event. \n\nAfter graduating from F&M\, Colburn earned a MFA from the American University and is currently a Resident Artist at the Arlington Arts Center. She began the The Trip Wire Project\, now on view as part of 50 Years\, as a way to visually document the casualties of war since the United States entered into the Middle East conflict.\nLifshutz received her MFA in 4D/time-based art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and recently opened her own business\, Pumpkin Studios in Brooklyn. She uses neon and text to communicate “suggested commands\,” that invite those who read her signs to act of their own volition\, rather than following a direct instruction.\nWolf earned her second bachelor’s degree at F&M in art and art history before continuing on to earn a MA at Bryn Mawr. Wolf refers to each of new her paintings as “reverse ekphrasis.” Instead of describing an image\, she collects sections of poetry and prose that she then responds to and interprets in her art.\nWashburn was one of the first women admitted to F&M and is a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. She previously served as a vice president of St. Lawrence University\, Centenary College\, and The Evergreen State College.\n\nArtwork courtesy of Christy Batta ‘09\, Cindy Clements ‘85\, Michèle Colburn ‘76\, Jennie de Mello e Souza ‘92\, Rebecca Frantz ‘13\, Stephanie Lifshutz ‘13\, Conrad Nelson ‘81\, Beverly Ryan ‘73\, Rachael Scharf ‘09\, and Frances Wolf ‘96.
