DESCRIPTION:UNSAID\, A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION BY SACI MFA ’17 ALUMNUS\, ANDREW GATTI\, DEBUTS AT THE SACI NEW YORK GALLERY THIS SPRING! \nOn View: February 13\, 2020 – May 21\, 2020 \nA series of photographic images paired with written sounds (phonetics)\, which aims to visually represent the dislocated joint that exists between language and media; An indirect correspondence between symbols and sounds\, and sounds and ideas.  \nThis series of work\, made over three years from 2017-2019\, engages in a reimagining of written pronunciations\, as sounds\, disassociated from their true meaning by representing them photographically\, engendering new relationships for the ideas represented by the original word. \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, February 13th starting at 6:00pm \nIf you plan to attend the Opening Reception\, please RSVP\, as we are expecting a full house! Light food and refreshments will be provided. \nAndrew Gatti was born in Denver\, Colorado. After relocating and spending most of his childhood in Akron\, Ohio\, he returned to Denver for college and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Art Degree in Studio Art and Italian Language & Literature from the University of Denver. Soon after\, Gatti moved to Italy to attend Studio Arts College International\, Florence attaining a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Photography in 2017. DESCRIPTION:SACI will take part in New York City Jewelry Week 2019 with the exhibition Ancient Roots\, Modern Branches\, works by SACI Alumna Aviva Shapiro\, Tess Sholom\, and Jorge Alva.\nON VIEW: November 19 – 23\, 2019\nFIRST LOOK & OPENING RECEPTION: November 19 at 5:30pm \nANCIENT ROOTS\, MODERN BRANCHES is a boutique gallery exhibit of artisanal jewelry in partnership with NYC Jewelry Week\, which welcomes arts and culture enthusiasts who come together to explore the multifaceted jewelry industry. \nANCIENT ROOTS\, MODERN BRANCHES presents the work of three independent goldsmiths: Tess Sholom\, Jorge Alva\, and Aviva Shapiro. These artists design and create jewelry by heating\, forging\, and transforming ingots of high-karat gold. By using the ancient art and techniques of goldsmithing\, their work explores\, manifests\, juxtaposes\, and reconciles both ancient and contemporary aesthetics which has led them to experiment with textured gold surfaces and granulation\, fused with organic forms and modernist motifs. \nJoin us for the opening reception on November 19th at 5:30pm. This special exhibition at the SACI New York Gallery will offer a variety of jewelry designs available for purchase at different prices. DESCRIPTION:SOME TEN ODD YEARS \nAn Exhibition of Drawings and Paintings by SACI alumnus\, Josh Dorman. \n  \nStop by the Opening Reception! \nWhen: September 19\, 2019 @ 6:00pm \nWhere: 454 W 19th Street\, New York\, NY 10011 \n  \nWe are excited to present this SACI Study Abroad Alumnus’ most recent opere a collection of 11 paintings and 3 drawings entitled Some Ten Odd Years Ago. \nJosh Dorman’s work focuses on themes regarding the passing of time and how an object’s meaning is altered over time. Dorman’s work skirts the line between a technically realist practice in conflict with an almost surrealistic flavor. Artists that appear to be direct influences are Hieronymus Bosch for the obvious correlations with the scale and nuanced intricacies\, as well as surrealistic Dali and De Chirico and those of the futurists era. \nA body of work that is well grounded in past movements\, paying tribute to them\, while still aiming at creating something new and worthwhile all the same. It bears a compelling weight in terms of depth in terms of legibly micro-narratives\, recalling similarities between his work and that of European or Chinese tapestry and Russian iconographic representation. A diverse range of emotional investment can be garnered between the micro and the macro interpretations of his pieces. \nJosh Dorman (b. 1966) grew up in Baltimore in 1966 before studying at Skidmore College for his BA and then Queen’s College for his MFA. His recent exhibitions include John Martin Gallery\, One New York Plaze\, Ryan Lee Gallery and Koplin Del Rio Gallery. SUMMARY:A Response to Sol LeWitt's Studio by Irene Barberis
DESCRIPTION:Variations and Compositions: \nA response to Sol LeWitt’s Studio \n3.15.19 – 6.1.19 \n  \nON VIEW: AUGUST 15 – 22\, 2019 \n  \nIrene Barberis\, an Australian/British artist\, met Sol LeWitt in 1974 and remained friends for over 30 years. She is the first artist to have the privilege to make work in Sol LeWitt’s studio in Chester and has produced new bodies of works responding to the space\, his studio processes and intersections in their oeuvres and his influence on her practice. The works shown here are from this period and are a prelude to major works constructed in Australia. \n“Often perceived as ‘composer’\, LeWitt worked every day in his Chester studio; immersed daily in his space\, I have responded to this idea in two series of works. Variations and Compositions. Variations react in a painterly manner\, to the studio publication copy of the 1974 ‘Incomplete Open Cubes’. SUMMARY:Rive by Jon Verney
DESCRIPTION:RIVE: A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION \nJon Verney a photographer whose work engages in manipulated found imagery\, an interplay between the images of forgotten amateur photographers and the powerful sensation of abstract colors and fractal patterns and reticulation of the original. \nHis work is a reiteration of the dadaist practice of found objects and their subsequent metamorphoses after entering his possession. Using the contemporary material that is a Polaroid and subjecting them to methods of tangible and controllable manipulation of the photographic emulsion\, Verney draws out of them the untapped potential that lay dormant. \nHe sources his materials\, the Polaroids\, from flea markets\, shops\, or bought in bulk online. Blowing these small personal images up to a large scale reinvents the originals into something unintended at their initial creation\, giving a commentary on personal versus public. \nThe disassociation with the subjects and the original photographers’\, whose work allows Verney the ability to create his work\, mirrors that of Jacqui Kenny or Doug Rickard and their respective use of Google Street View\, a global resource allowing those two photographers to create artwork from the comfort of their own homes using the resources of our modern society. \nThe subject of this body of work\, Rive\, engages in the theme of a schism\, a fault line\, a separation of two worlds that butt up against one another\, like the waves of the ocean lapping against the shore. The banal common-place nature of these amateur photographs is at the same time both obscured behind\, and obscuring the organic blooms of his manipulations\, giving the sensation of a reciprocity between reality and surreality. \nJoin us for the Opening Reception! \nThursday\, February 7\, 2019 from 6:00-8:00pm \nMake sure to also stop by the Artist Talk! \nThursday\, April 18\, 2019 from 6:00-7:00pm \nJon Verney is a visual artist whose practice interweaves the materiality of painting\, photography\, and film. After earning a BFA with Distinction in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2010\, he relocated to Florence\, Italy\, where he attended SACI’s Post-Baccalaureate studio program. He was afterwards awarded a SACI Photo/Media Teaching Assistantship and remained at the school for two more years as a TA and darkroom technician. Upon returning to the United States\, he received his MFA from the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan in 2016. Verney has exhibited his work nationally and internationally and has attended artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center\, the Studios at MASS MoCA\, Penland School of Craft\, and the Independent Imaging Retreat in Ontario\, Canada. His studio practice is based in North Adams\, Massachusetts.
