SUMMARY:Jacob Lawrence and the Legend of John Brown
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Lawrence and the Legend of John Brown presents a recently acquired portfolio of prints by the acclaimed Black modernist Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000). Lawrence originally produced The Legend of John Brown as paintings in 1941\, but\, due to problems related to the stability of the gouache used in the series\, in 1974 he collaborated with printers to translate this important body of work to screen prints. Lawrence drew inspiration for the 22 prints in the series from research he conducted at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library\, notably Franklin B. Sanborn’s The Life and Letters of John Brown\, Liberator of Kansas and Martyr of Virginia\, published in 1885. Lawrence’s account of Brown’s life and death includes consideration of his time in Kansas\, where Brown first employed violence in his quest to rid the country of slavery.

SUMMARY:Land and Sovereignty: The Foundation for Public Art and Studio Practice
DESCRIPTION:Internationally recognized artist and KU alum Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds speaks about issues of place and power in his art. Five text-based panels from his Native Hosts series are installed in front of the Spencer Museum of Art and were selected as this year’s KU Common Work of Art. Native Hosts is just one example of Heap of Birds’s thought-provoking public interventions that acknowledge the historical displacement of Native Americans from their homelands and the contemporary presence of Native Americans across the Americas and the world. \nRegister in advance to join this virtual talk: kansas.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QQf9cOKxSZOaIpN8wzz6kQ \nSponsored By: History of Art DEAI Student Committee\, Kress Foundation Department of Art History\, Spencer Museum of Art\, Haskell Indian Nations University\, KU First Nations Student Association

SUMMARY:Pictures at an Exhibition: The Perception of Color in the Museum Environment
DESCRIPTION:Although there is no single correct way to perform a musical score\, there are many ways to diminish the quality of the experience. Similarly\, the conditions of an exhibition influence our experience of the works of art on display. Join Steven Weintraub of Art Preservation Services in New York for a discussion of the factors that affect the appearance of colors in visual art. Weintraub specializes in the preservation of museum collections and researches color perception and illumination. Weintraub is a visiting conservator at the Spencer Museum as part of the Collaborative Conservation Initiative funded by the Andrew W. SUMMARY:Debut
DESCRIPTION:Opening in fall of 2021\, Debut will feature artwork from the Spencer Museum’s collection that has never been exhibited in our building since it opened in 1978. The eclectic artwork assembled is explored through seven broad thematic sections. Debut will remain on view for the duration of Phase II renovation and the complete reinstall of our fourth-floor collection galleries. As we undergo these transformative changes\, Debut presents previously unseen works in conversation with more familiar art from the collection that is frequently used for teaching and research. This exhibition is supported by Friends of the Art Museum\, KU Student Senate\, and the Linda Inman Bailey Exhibitions Fund.
