SUMMARY:Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper
DESCRIPTION:Centuries of fashion are explored in the breathtaking paper sculptures of contemporary artist Isabelle de Borchgrave. Working in collaboration with leading costume historians and emerging fashion designers\, de Borchgrave crafts a world of splendor from the simplest rag paper. From replicas of Renaissance Italian gowns to recreations of the fantastical modernist costumes of the Ballet Russes\, de Borchgrave’s work is meticulously crafted and astonishingly beautiful. Her paper costumes have been featured in major exhibitions around the world from Venice to San Francisco—and soon in Wichita. \nThe exhibition has been organized by Dixon Gallery and Gardens\, Memphis\, in cooperation with Isabelle de Borchgrave Studio. \nImage: Isabelle de Borchgrave\, Maria-Maddalena d’Austria\, 2007. SUMMARY:Paper Dreams: Alfred Maurer and American Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:Fall brings Paper Dreams: Alfred Maurer and American Masterpieces to the Wichita Art Museum with two beautifully paired exhibitions. Alfred Maurer: American Modern Works on Paper from the Weisman Art Museum Collection and Essence of Line: American Modern Works on Paper from the Wichita Art Museum Collection combine the riches of two nationally prominent American art collections—Minneapolis and Wichita. \nBeginning in the early 20th century\, American artists turned away from centuries-old subjects and styles\, yearning to reflect their own time and unique experiences in a rapidly changing world. Renegades who championed self-expression\, they ignored the rules and crafted their own freshly original art. Those modern masters expressed themselves with greatest immediacy in works on paper\, including drawings\, pastels\, watercolors\, and prints. \nOne gallery will feature work by Alfred Maurer (1868–1932)\, all from the collection of the Weisman Art Museum\, University of Minnesota. From the artist’s early success with academic classicism to daring Matisse-inspired fauvism to languid modernist muses\, the exhibition presents the artistic development of one of America’s leading avant-garde artists in the early 20th century. \nIn the neighboring gallery\, American modernist gems from the Wichita Art Museum will be proudly displayed. This world-class grouping includes incredible moderns such as Charles Burchfield\, Charles Demuth\, Arthur Dove\, Edward Hopper\, John Marin\, Maurice Prendergast\, Charles Sheeler\, Everett Shinn\, and many more. \nThe combination of exhibitions will be a rare treat for Wichita and Kansas audiences—works on paper are particularly sensitive to light damage and restrictions limit the time these artworks can be displayed. \nImage: Edward Hopper\, Adam’s House\, 1928. SUMMARY:Power to the People: Mexican Prints from the Great War to the Cold War
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on work from the James and Virginia Moffett Collection\, Power to the People: Mexican Prints from the Great War to the Cold War explores the political and social conditions of early-20thcentury Mexico and the dynamic\, groundbreaking art that emerged from the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). \nThis period of war and dramatic social upheaval witnessed a flowering of artistic production\, particularly in printmaking and graphic arts. Mexico’s long printmaking tradition dates to the late 1500s. \nArtists such as José Guadalupe Posada\, Diego Rivera\, José Clemente Orozco\, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—icons of Mexican modernism—drew on those traditions and everyday imagery to create new messages of social justice meant to appeal directly to the working classes in the Mexican provinces. Power to the People is guest-curated by Cori Sherman North and Bill North. \nImage: Jean Charlot\, Tortillera with Child (Rest and Work)\, 1941. Color lithograph\, 12 1⁄2 x 18 1⁄2 inches. SUMMARY:Beth Lipman: All in Time
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Beth Lipman—whose monumental hanging sculpture Living History was recently unveiled in the museum’s Boeing Foyer—WAM presents All in Time\, a mid-career retrospective of the artist featuring her work from the mid-2000s through today.\nFor over 20 years\, Beth Lipman has used glass and other materials to create luscious and sumptuous still lifes. These still lifes feature everything from bowls of fruit to prehistoric plants to piles of books. For Lipman\, each still life object speaks to identity—of an individual\, a society\, and of human culture in general. All in Time brings into focus Lipman’s long interest in using glass to explore issues of creation\, life\, decay\, and death—the fleeting nature of human life and human history contrasted with the billions of years of geological time. What is the role of humanity and art in a world and universe that existed long before us? What do we create that endures?\nBeth Lipman is a star of the contemporary art world. In 2013\, she was honored by a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship. That same year\, PBS featured her in the Craft in America documentary. In 2018\, Lipman was elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council. Recently\, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Arkansas) and Chrysler Museum of Art (Virginia) have commissioned significant Lipman artworks. She is currently working on a major project with the Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio). Her work is held in permanent collections across the country\, from the deYoung Museum in San Francisco to the Brooklyn Museum in New York.\nAll in Time brings into focus Lipman’s long interest in using glass to explore issues of creation\, life\, decay\, and death—the fleeting nature of human life and human history contrasted with the billions of years of geological time.

SUMMARY:Putting on the Glitz: Art Deco Fashion
DESCRIPTION:As the Art Deco era dawned in the early 1920s\, life had changed dramatically for American women. They were entering the workforce in increasing numbers\, had gained the right to vote\, and had more opportunities for education. The bicycle\, and then the car\, allowed this new “modern woman” freedom to leave her home without male escort and socialize at nightclubs and speakeasies. In this new world\, she also wore a new type of dress—one inspired by Art Deco’s blocky geometries. In the 1920s\, fashionable women wore dresses with dropped waists and calf-length hems\, often made of satin or covered in beadwork to exploit Art Deco’s fascination with light and sheen. In the 1930s—as longer gowns came back in style—women’s fashion often combined simple\, fluid construction with geometric pattern to create streamlined looks reminiscent of Art Deco architecture and industrial design. Drawn from the Wichita Art Museum and Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum permanent collections\, Putting on the Glitz combines Art Deco-era clothing and accessories with prints and paintings of fashionable women on the town by artists such as John Sloan\, Martin Lewis\, and Kenneth Hayes Miller.\nPutting on the Glitz is organized in conjunction with American Art Deco: Designing for the People\, 1918–1939.

SUMMARY:The International Block Print Renaissance Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The International Block Print Renaissance began in the last decades of the 19th century in Europe\, as artists and collectors rediscovered the block print medium. Wichita played a major role in expanding this renaissance throughout America. In 1922\, the newly assembled Wichita Art Association presented American Block Print Makers as one of its first exhibitions. The exhibition inaugurated a century-long relationship between Wichita and prints. Beginning in 1928\, Wichita hosted an annual juried block print exhibition. It continued through the 1990s and became one of the most important print competitions in America. In these same years\, the Wichita-based Prairie Print Makers—a national print artist collective—was founded\, and from 1931 through 1965 assembled annual exhibitions. Together\, these events firmly established Wichita’s position in the history of printmaking and American art.\nThe International Block Print Renaissance Then and Now includes over 140 prints. Together with its accompanying catalogue\, the exhibition explores Wichita’s important role in the history of this international renaissance. It features prints by European leaders including Emil Orlik\, Walther Klemm\, Henri Riviére\, Frank Morley Fletcher\, John Platt\, Allen Seaby\, Jules Chadel\, Hans Neumann\, and Auguste Lepére. It also includes works by the Japanese masters Katsushika Hokusai and Ando Hiroshige. These European and Japanese masters influenced and inspired the American printmakers featured in the show\, including B.J.O. Nordfeldt\, Ernest Watson\, Helen Hyde\, Frances Gearhart\, Gustave Baumann\, and C.A. Seward. Many of these artists were chosen for the initial 1922 exhibition and the annual print shows that followed.\nThe International Block Print Renaissance Then and Now also celebrates the ongoing vigor of this renaissance through the work of 12 contemporary printmakers—Jean Gumpper\, Mark Sisson\, Mike Lyon\, Karen Kunc\, Leon Loughridge\, Gordon Mortenson\, Micah Schwaberow\, Walt Padgett\, Michelle Martin\, Tim High\, Louise Fisher\, and Linda Lee Boyd. These artists—like their predecessors who worked a century before—continue to push the artistic possibilities of the block print medium. Join WAM in celebrating the 100th anniversary of block prints in our city\, then and now.

SUMMARY:American Art Deco: Designing for the People\, 1918-1939
DESCRIPTION:Art Deco is a wildly popular architecture and design movement from the 1920s and 1930s—the Roaring Twenties and Great Depression. The Wichita Art Museum will present an exhibition of 140+ iconic artworks—decorative arts\, paintings\, sculptures\, and more—that epitomize this historical moment in American experience. This touring exhibition\, co-organized by the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha\, Nebraska\, and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City\, Missouri\, will open at WAM on Saturday\, February 12\, 2022. \nAmerican Art Deco: Designing for the People investigates this dynamic period when the county went through sharp economic\, political\, social as well as artistic transformation. From stylish decorative art objects to industrial design products\, from compelling photographs to modern paintings\, the range of artworks in this exhibition reflect the glamour of the 1920s and the devastation and escapism of the 1930s. \nArt Deco\, short for arts décoratifs\, took its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes\, held in Paris in 1925. The international exposition celebrated a new style characterized by geometric ornament\, symmetry\, stylization\, and angularity\, which developed globally with different variants. In the United States\, it combined modern style with an embrace of materials used in industry and new technologies\, influencing the design of everything from skyscrapers and automobiles to clothing and radios. \n“This exhibition breaks new ground in the field of 20th-century decorative arts and design in its exploration of societal shifts following World War I and the flu pandemic of 1918\,” said Julián Zugazagoitia\, Menefee D. and Mary Louise Blackwell CEO and Director of the Nelson-Atkins. “More Americans had access to new designs\, but there were also economic and social realities that prevented everyone from enjoying new fashions in household goods. The exhibition investigates the aspirations\, dreams\, and challenges of the 1920s and 1930s.” \nThe Wichita Art Museum also has lent five works from its collection to American Art Deco\, including Arthur Dove’s painting Forms Against the Sun\, Carl Wuermer’s painting American Farmer\, and the Georgia O’Keeffe-designed and Max Erlacher-engraved Jimson Weed Plate. \nAmerican Art Deco is organized by Joslyn Art Museum\, Omaha\, NE\, and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art\, Kansas City\, MO. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Catherine Futter\, formerly Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Nelson-Atkins and now Interim Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Decorative Arts at Brooklyn Museum. \nThe Major lender to the exhibition is Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art in Denver\, Colorado. Key loans from Kirkland Museum join loans from Fisk University Galleries and John Hope and Aurelia E. Franklin Library at Fisk University in Nashville\, Tennessee; Kansas City Museum in Missouri; Sheldon Museum of Art\, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Wichita Art Museum; and several private collections along with objects from the collections of the Nelson-Atkins and Joslyn for this special exhibition.

SUMMARY:B.J.O. Nordfeldt: American Internationalist
DESCRIPTION:Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt (1878–1955) was a modernist of international reputation. With a spirit that sought new locations for new artistic inspiration\, he lived in or near artist colonies in Provincetown in Massachusetts\, Santa Fe in New Mexico\, and New Hope in Pennsylvania. \nThe first scholarly assessment in decades and retrospective of the artist is organized by the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota. The Wichita Art Museum will mount this special exhibition in fall 2021. \n\nNordfeldt was a regular among the Wichita art scene in the 1930s. Banker and painter Ed Davison summered often in Taos\, and he befriended many notable artists in the art colonies of Taos and Santa Fe. He brought them to Wichita for visits\, exhibition\, and sales opportunities as well as his own artistic inquiry. Nordfeldt made many extended visits to the home of Ed and Faye Davison in Wichita. In fact\, he was already a friend of Lindsborg artist and fellow Swede\, Birger Sandzen. The pair first crossed paths with Chicago’s Swedish-American exhibitions in the early teens. \nWith this anchor for Nordfeldt in Wichita\, it is important to bring his retrospective to Kansas. New audiences will encounter this masterful modernist who was received in our city with warmth and appreciation in the early decades of the 20th century. \nB.J.O. Nordfeldt: American Internationalist is organized by the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The Wichita presentation has been generously underwritten by presenting sponsor Lattner Family Foundation. The Trust Company of Kansas and DeVore Foundation are lead sponsors. Charles E. SUMMARY:Sun Patterns -- Dark Canyons: The Paintings and Aquatints of Doel Reed
DESCRIPTION:Sun Patterns—Dark Canyons explores the art and career of the 20th-century American printmaker and painter Doel Reed (1894–1985). Best known today as a Southwestern artist and master of aquatint printmaking\, Reed began his career in the Midwest and moved to Oklahoma in the 1920s. He served as an art professor at Oklahoma State University for more than 30 years. Like many other Depression-era artists\, Reed embraced American Scene painting—an art movement which depicted everyday life and folk customs. For much of his career\, Reed was a friend and colleague of other artists in the Midwest\, including members of the Wichita-based Prairie Print Makers. \nUltimately\, Reed would find his true inspiration in the rugged terrain and luminous light of New Mexico. The artist began summering in the Taos artist colony starting in the 1940s and permanently moved to New Mexico in 1959. The landscape\, geology\, and history of New Mexico were his primary sources of inspiration and perfectly suited his signature style—painting and printmaking characterized by geometric abstraction\, the dramatic use of lights and darks\, and a focus on emotional impact. \nSun Patterns—Dark Canyons: The Paintings and Aquatints of Doel Reed has been organized by the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art in Stillwater\, Oklahoma. The exhibition was curated by Dr. Rebecca Brienen. \nOklahoma exhibition sponsors Kent and Jeanette Young\, Neal and Lora Buck\, Doel Reed Center\, Vaughn Vennerberg II Endowed Chair in Art\, and Oklahoma State University Museum of Art Advocates provided financial support. The accompanying catalogue was sponsored by Carl and Marilynn Thoma Foundation and Terra Foundation for American Art.

SUMMARY:Richard Marquis: Keepers
DESCRIPTION:Richard Marquis: Keepers is a late career survey of a towering figure in the Studio Glass movement. Richard Marquis is known for extraordinary technique\, comic sensibility\, bold innovations\, and iconoclastic spirit. \n\nIn his 50-year career\, he has consistently been gleefully inventive and unfailingly smart. His work is collected and exhibited world-wide. The 119 objects in the exhibition are chosen from the artist’s own comprehensive archives of his art from the 1960s to the present. Marquis calls these pieces his “keepers.” \nThis retrospective exhibition was organized by the Museum of Glass in Tacoma\, Washington\, in partnership with the Wichita Art Museum and guest curated by Seattle-based curator Vicki Halper. The galleries will be thematically arranged and include areas of his work that have rarely been exhibited\, including ceramics and prints.

SUMMARY:Foot in the Door: Wichita Artists Make Their Mark
DESCRIPTION:Foot in the Door celebrates the artists who call Wichita home. Featuring the work of hundreds of Wichita artists—young and old\, professional and emerging—the exhibition showcases 12×12-inch artworks—from paintings and prints to drawings and reliefs. Artworks were accepted on a first come\, first serve basis from Wichita artists eager to get their “foot in the door” at the Wichita Art Museum. Organized in a large grid in the museum’s Paul Ross Gallery and Scott and Carol Ritchie Gallery\, the exhibition is a visual testament to the depth and richness of Wichita’s artistic talent. \nStaged in conjunction with the Wichita Art Museum’s 85th Anniversary\, “the exhibition is an opportunity to recognize Wichita artists and make them feel welcomed and loved at their art museum. They are critical to the lifeblood at WAM\,” says director Dr. Patricia McDonnell. Come see the spunky display and learn who got their “foot in the door” at WAM! \nImage by Larry Schwarm

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Women: Louise Caldwell Murdock and Elizabeth Navas
DESCRIPTION:A Tale of Two Women: Louise Caldwell Murdock and Elizabeth Navas celebrates the two female visionaries responsible for the formation of the Wichita Art Museum. In 1915\, Murdock made it her mission to ensure that her hometown would have an art museum\, donating her family fortune to the purchase of a “significant collection” of American art. Murdock entrusted Elizabeth Navas\, her friend and professional colleague\, with the task of assembling the art collection. Together\, the two women made an unsurpassable impact on Wichita and the surrounding region that continues today. Commemorating both WAM’s 85th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote\, the exhibition combines photographs\, objects belonging to Murdock and Navas\, and key Murdock Collection paintings. \nImage: Elizabeth Stubblefield Navas\, Carnegie Library Sunflower Stained Glass Window\, 7 x 26 1/2 x 2 3/4 inches. SUMMARY:Pete Armstrong Photography Lecture - Iconic: How Art Photography Gained a Canon
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Elizabeth Siegel for her thoughts and assessment on how a photograph becomes an icon. Photography first received recognition as a vibrant and viable art form in the 20th century. As museum curators\, photographic historians\, and editors assessed the rich history of the medium\, certain images came forward as definitional to the history of photographic achievement\, and museums and publications promoted them with new authority. A new canon emerged that held an outside influence on photographers and admirers ever since. Siegel will discuss key works by acclaimed photographers Berenice Abbott\, Margaret Bourke-White\, Walker Evans\, Dorothea Lange\, Alfred Stieglitz\, Paul Strand\, Edward Weston\, and Garry Winogrand\, among others. \nSiegel is Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago\, where she has curated focused exhibitions on photographers including Ralph Eugene Meatyard\, Abelardo Morell\, and Alfred Stieglitz. \nGalleries will be open prior to the talk. \nAbout the Pete Armstrong Photography Lecture Series\nThis program is the second in the newly launched Edward “Pete” Armstrong Lecture Series. \nEdward “Pete” Armstrong (1921-2009) was a respected business and civic leader and talented photographer. A photographic officer during WWII\, he pursued his passion for photography throughout his life. His wife\, Mickey Armstrong\, and family\, honor Pete and his lifelong love of photography through endowed support for ongoing talks on photography topics at the Wichita Art Museum.
