SUMMARY:Pete Armstrong Photography Lecture - Iconic: How Art Photography Gained a Canon
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Elizabeth Siegel for her thoughts and assessment on how a photograph becomes an icon. Photography first received recognition as a vibrant and viable art form in the 20th century. As museum curators\, photographic historians\, and editors assessed the rich history of the medium\, certain images came forward as definitional to the history of photographic achievement\, and museums and publications promoted them with new authority. A new canon emerged that held an outside influence on photographers and admirers ever since. Siegel will discuss key works by acclaimed photographers Berenice Abbott\, Margaret Bourke-White\, Walker Evans\, Dorothea Lange\, Alfred Stieglitz\, Paul Strand\, Edward Weston\, and Garry Winogrand\, among others. \nSiegel is Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago\, where she has curated focused exhibitions on photographers including Ralph Eugene Meatyard\, Abelardo Morell\, and Alfred Stieglitz. \nGalleries will be open prior to the talk. \nAbout the Pete Armstrong Photography Lecture Series\nThis program is the second in the newly launched Edward “Pete” Armstrong Lecture Series. \nEdward “Pete” Armstrong (1921-2009) was a respected business and civic leader and talented photographer. A photographic officer during WWII\, he pursued his passion for photography throughout his life. His wife\, Mickey Armstrong\, and family\, honor Pete and his lifelong love of photography through endowed support for ongoing talks on photography topics at the Wichita Art Museum.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk: Past\, Present\, and Future - Native American Art in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Join Philbrook Museum of Art curator Christina Burke for an illustrated talk exploring how contemporary Indigenous artists draw inspiration from the past in their creative practices. From painting to fashion design and everything in between\, such connections can be seen in many artists’ work—including Preston Singletary whose exhibition Raven and the Box of Daylight is on view at the Wichita Art Museum February 1 through August 30\, 2020. Burke\, who has been Curator of Native American and Non-Western Art at Philbrook since 2006\, has worked on a variety of collaborative projects with Indigenous artists\, from collections research and exhibition development to fashion shows and commissioning new work. Burke is a cultural anthropologist and curator whose focus is Native American art and material culture. She has researched and written about historical and contemporary Native art\, juried competitive shows like Santa Fe Indian Market\, and curated such exhibitions as the retrospective Impact: The Philbrook Indian Annual\, 1946-1979. She has also worked on diverse collaborative projects with Native people\, including developing Native language curriculum materials\, as well as collections research and exhibition development. Her primary interest is exploring Indigenous creative traditions and their contemporary expressions. \nGalleries will be open before talk.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk: Modern Beauty – Fashion and the Rise of Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:Join Gloria Groom\, Curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago\, for an illustrated talk exploring the relationship between fashion and modern art at the end of the 19th century. Groom organized the 2012 blockbuster exhibition Impressionism\, Fashion\, and Modernity that toured Paris\, Chicago\, and New York. The New York Times called the exhibition “thrilling” and “groundbreaking.” \nGroom’s current exhibition\, Manet and Modern Beauty\, explores the way Edouard Manet—the quintessential painter of 19th-century Paris—turned to fashion for inspiration in his late career. Manet and Modern Beauty\, which opened in Chicago before traveling to Los Angeles\, was hailed by The Chicago Tribune as “beautiful and au courant.” \nThe Howard E.
