SUMMARY:Stanley Bielen: A Modest Arrangement
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition of new paintings by Stanley Bielen.  This is his fifth exhibition with the gallery and features his intimate still life paintings. An artist reception will be held June 26th from 6-8pm. \nBielen’s process begins outside of the studio with planting the flowers he will later paint. He brings the clippings he cultivates to his studio and renders them in voluminous\, rich brushwork. The blooms are typically painted at scale in one session\, immortalizing them in that moment. Reveling in the paint itself\, Bielen depicts the objects with a sense of immediacy\, as if glimpsed and remembered in an instant. \nFlowers\, fruits\, and vessels are modeled with gestural\, loaded brushstrokes. The forms take on a dimensional\, tactile quality as Bielen sculpts shadow\, builds up dense backgrounds\, or lays down generous daubs of paint to portray petals. Irregular\, impasto shapes define structure\, light\, and shadow\, making the work at once abstract and recognizable. Lush colors emerge vividly against stark black or white grounds. \nIn subject and medium the paintings are traditional\, echoing still-life conventions\, but Bielen’s lavish paint handling and pared-down settings feel decidedly contemporary. His work draws on the dramatic chiaroscuro of the Baroque\, channeling its theatrical lighting and deep tonal contrasts to intensify the physicality of each painting. \nStanley Bielen was born in the Podkarpackie region of Poland.  He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and is influenced by the long regional realist tradition called the Philadelphia School.  He exhibits nationally and is represented in public and private collections including the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.  Stanley lives and works in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania and Bridgton\, Maine.

SUMMARY:Greg Chann : Synaptic Structures
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is delighted to announce an upcoming exhibition of recent sculptures by Greg Chann. Synaptic Structures will be Chann’s first solo show with the gallery. \nChann constructs both free standing and wall mounted sculptures from cut acrylic and tones them by delicately airbrushing multicolored inks across the transparent surfaces. The resulting objects are perfectly balanced with precisely arranged geometric forms that play with space and density as they emerge from the wall or plinth. Colors range from glossy and vibrant to muted and hazy as light filters through each lucent plane. Layers overlap\, disrupting flat colors with shadow and reflections as one hue melts into the next. \nTaking influence from a variety of imagery\, Chann sets out to depict the “intricate interconnectedness of our world.” Many of the works are reminiscent of architecture\, the angular forms suggesting a skyline or lines on a map. Smoky colors call to mind the smog of a city street while intense jewel tones suggest lights or neon signs. Balance and harmony are at the heart of the work and as such they create a serene\, introspective environment. Chann explains\, “Derived from ancient symbols such as the Chinese Yin and Yang and influenced by the meditative complexity found in Buddhist mandalas\, my art invites viewers on a contemplative journey.” \nGreg Chann has shown his work with Denise Bibro Fine Art\, NYC; Dorsky Gallery\, NYC; Margaret Thatcher Projects\, NYC; The Drawing Center\, NYC; among other spaces around the country. His work has appeared in The New Yorker\, NY Arts\, and Time Out New York. He has received a NY Foundation of the Arts Fellowship\, and the NY Foundations of the Arts/Felissimo Award and lives and works in New York.

SUMMARY:Samantha Haring & Tess Michalik : Reprieve
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is delighted to announce an upcoming exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Samantha Haring and Tess Michalik\, Reprieve. Haring and Michalik met while studying at Northern Illinois University and have maintained a friendship ever since. Though their respective techniques diverge\, they find common ground in their romantic treatment of domestic subjects. \nHaring’s oeuvre commemorates the quotidian trappings of the artist’s life. Bubblewrap\, cardboard boxes\, and glass jars are portrayed with the masterful sensitivity of a Dutch still-life. Of her work\, the artist states\, “I make quiet paintings in a noisy world.” Indeed\, in subdued shades of chalk pastel and oil paint\, Haring crafts an immersive scene\, offering a serene reprieve from the excess of consumer culture. \nInspired by vintage wallpaper designs\, Michalik renders delicate floral subjects in voluptuous layers of impasto. Languid brushstrokes animate each petal and leaf recalling the sensuous ornamentation of Rococo. On her practice\, Michalik writes\, “painting is a celebration of joy\, anxiety\, simple pleasures\, decoration\, ornamentation\, and the material nature of paint.” \n\nSamantha Haring is an artist and educator based in Cincinnati\, OH. She has  held solo shows across the United States\, including at the Gumtree Museum of Art in Mississippi\, Gallery 19 in Chicago\, and the Ohio State University.  Haring’s work is published in issues #119 and #123 of New American Paintings\, as well as in several recent Manifest INDA and INPA publications. \nMichalik has exhibited internationally in art institutions\, fairs\, university galleries\, community spaces\, and commercial galleries including the Schoolhouse Gallery in Massachusetts\, the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba\, and the Wonder Fair in Kansas. Her paintings have been published internationally in Architectural Digest. Michalik’s newspaper\, Devour\, was published in collaboration with Brooklyn based Raw Meat Collective\, and was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art Library in New York as part of the exhibit\, “Please Knock: A Teen Album of Art” Michalik lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY.

SUMMARY:Ky Anderson: I Make Plans With the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Ideas take center stage in Ky Anderson’s abstract paintings. She engages in a continuous process of improvisation and translation using a  visual language of bold curves and solid geometry that contrasts with passages of delicate transparencies. Using a variety of mediums\, she works on multiple paintings simultaneously\, building up translucent layers of oil and acrylic\, as ideas flow freely from painting to painting. Layered paint covers past gestures and thin paint reveals the history of the process. This serial process creates interconnected bodies of work but each painting stands as evidence of the search\, exploring endless possibilities of shape\, color\, and line. \n  \nAnderson’s abstractions always evolve in response to her world. These recent paintings reflect the fact that after living 25 years in Brooklyn\, Anderson has spent the last 4 in KC\, in an entirely different environment filled with trees\, space and a midwestern light. She says\, “Each piece in this body of work reflects my experiences and observations in my new setting. Suspended between abstraction and landscape\, this body of work speaks of flowing water\, trees falling\, dramatic weather\, a city at dusk\, the changing light through the seasons\, and the cycles of life and death\, both in flora and in the people around me.” \n  \n  \nKy Anderson(b. 1973\, Kansas City)has exhibited widely throughout the United States\, Canada and Europe in solo shows\, group shows\, art fairs and public institutions. Solo shows include exhibitions at Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City\, MO\, Kathryn Markel Fine Art in New York\, NY\, Republic Gallery in Vancouver\, CA\, Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco\, CA and Zeitgeist in Nashville\, TN. She is a founding member of PAPER GIANTS\, an art collective painting large scale works on paper with exhibitions at Moore College of Art\, The University of Northern Iowa and more. Recent residencies include Saltonstall Foundation and Vermont Studio Center. Anderson was born and raised in Kansas City\, MO and received her BFA The Kansas City Art Institute. She now lives and works in Kansas City. \n
