SUMMARY:LANDSCAPES: NEAR & FAR
DESCRIPTION:Ann Korologos Gallery presents Landscapes: Near and Far celebrating the majestic landmarks and views from backcountry roads of the Roaring Fork Valley\, greater Colorado\, and Utah with works by locally acclaimed and nationally recognized artists Dan Young\, Leon Loughridge\, Peter Campbell\, and featuring new-to-the-gallery artists Kate Starling and Deborah Paris. \n“Our little gallery in Basalt sits at the heart of the Rocky Mountains\, or rather\, our hearts. We dwell within these mountains\, valleys\, rivers\, forests\, and under these skies\,” reflects gallery owner Ann Korologos. “We know that to observe a landscape painting in the distinctive style and medium of an artist\, to study the work\, absorbing the subject\, light\, and perspective that speaks to the heart is a beautiful experience that changes the way one sees and interacts with the world.” \nWoodblock printmaker and watercolor artist Leon Loughridge lives in Denver\, CO. The artist has explored both popular and hidden gems of the Roaring Fork Valley\, creating detailed references in watercolor of the scenes before him. Informed by Japanese printmaking techniques\, watercolor is his preferred medium to inspire the woodblock process. The contrast in the fluidity of watercolor versus the hard lines of a wood carving is surprising until appreciating the finished work. \nDan Young grew up exploring the shores of the Roaring Fork River and the valley through which it runs. The painter\, whose studio is in Silt\, CO\, finds his inspiration in his greater “backyard.” With his easel\, oil paint\, brushes\, canvas\, and palette in hand\, Young journeys across often familiar terrain until it calls him to stop. A quick sketch allows the artist to organize the landscape onto two dimensions\, and then he paints en plein air\, completing larger canvases in the studio. \nPeter Campbell lives in Durango\, CO.  The ideas for Campbell’s landscape oil paintings are often sparked by a fleeting glimpse that catches his eye and elicits an intimate and personal reaction to nature. The challenge lies in transferring that instant response to canvas. His oils depict the beauty of a rain storm\, rivers rushing through a landscape\, and barns at twilight. By limiting his palette and omitting details\, Peter effectively creates an atmosphere\, a mood\, sometimes a dream-like world which is open to each viewer’s interpretation. \nKate Starling lives and paints near Utah’s Zion National Park\, with visits to Colorado. Starling’s paintings portray the natural world and focus on communicating a sense of place\, atmosphere and dazzling light\, retaining the immediacy of the painting experience. Starling knows well the power of emotion that the land can trigger in her when seen in a particular light\, and she strives to evoke equally strong memories and emotions for the viewers of her work. \nTexas-based artist Deborah Paris is an American landscape artist whose work reflects an intense\, intuitive connection to the natural world and its rhythms. The time spent in the Aspen groves of Colorado inspires a body of the artist’s work. Based on a foundation of intense observation\, drawing\, memory and imagination\, as well as indirect painting techniques\, Deborah Paris produces luminous works full of mystery and mood. \nLandscapes: Near and Far is on view June 16th to August 2nd at Ann Korologos Gallery ‘under the clocktower’ in historic downtown Basalt and virtually at korologosgallery.com.

SUMMARY:Virtual Installation | Art of the New West
DESCRIPTION:Ann Korologos Gallery presents Art of the New West\, an alternative exhibition designed to take the viewer on a journey of light and movement amongst landscapes of the West. When these times feels like an abstraction\, Art of the New West examines nature through this shifted perspective to find the beauty that surrounds us. On view by appointment at Ann Korologos Gallery from April 17 through June 8\, 2020\, or virtually at www.korologosgallery.com. \nArt of the New West allows the viewer to follow the journey of a river from the high mountain streams to the desert and plains; feel the blossoms and growth of flowers and forests; examine abstract interpretations of the landscape. As Twyla Tharp\, an American dancer and choreographer in NYC\, said\, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” \n“These artists may paint or print in many styles\, but they all exhibit loving interactions with the moments they are capturing\,” shares Ann Korologos Gallery Director\, Sue Edmonds. “We wanted to share the places and moments that both we\, and our artists\, are dreaming of: water’s edge\, sunset vistas\, Aspen groves\, Spring and Summer flowers.” \nMichael Kessler is based in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. His intricately layered\, often large-scale\, nature-based abstract paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad\, featured in 135 solo exhibitions and 24 museum collections. Kessler takes an in-depth and decidedly modern look at the “inner dynamics of the natural world” and how the layers form a landscape. As Kessler asked questions of how and why nature took its form by observing erosion and growth through elements like wind and water\, these elements\, too\, shaped his work. Kessler’s abstractions accent modern architecture especially well\, and can be found as the focal point in many contemporary homes and buildings. \nMarie Figge Wise is based in both Texas and Colorado. Formerly a still-life painter\, Wise was driven to paint landscapes through her desire to combine her passion for travel\, the outdoors\, and love of art. The diffused\, tonal quality of Wise’s work encourages the viewer to slow down and feel the calm\, quiet of the moment captured on Wise’s canvas.  Art has always influenced Figge Wise’s life\, cultivated at first by her family’s involvement with Davenport’s Figge Art Museum\, and later pursued through her studies at The Art Students League of New York\, of the studio arts and art history in Italy. \nAllison Stewart is based in New Orleans and the Roaring Fork Valley. Stewart has gained national recognition for her large\, mixed media paintings that express the restless balance between man and nature. Her work is inspired by landscape imagery\, and she takes as her subject fragile environments\, cycles of life\, and primitive artifacts from past cultures. She uses layers of color\, light\, form and texture to address issues of beauty and loss\, time and transformation\, order and chaos\, creation and destruction\, examining overlooked aspects of nature\, and the quiet moments when change occurs outside our awareness. Her works examine nature from both the grand scale and the microscopic worlds\, seeing similarities in form and structure through her studies as both a biologist and an artist. \nArt of the New West features Western landscapes through the abstract and impressionist styles of Michael Kessler\, Marie Wise\, and Allison Stewart\, complimented by vibrant gallery selections of the season by Peter Campbell\, Sherrie York\, Sean Wallis\, Angus Wilson\, and more. To view the exhibition\, visit korologosgallery.com\, or make an appointment to view the exhibition privately in the gallery by calling (970) 927-9668 or emailing art@korologosgallery.com.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | Cowgirls & the Western Plains
DESCRIPTION:Cowgirls and the Western Plains features the feminine side of the West as portrayed by the vibrant cowgirls of Donna Howell-Sickles and the softer\, more subtle aspects of the West in the luminous landscapes by Linda Lillegraven. Join these women for an Artists’ Reception on Wednesday\, September 25th from 5 to 7PM at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt. \n“Donna Howell-Sickles captures the can-do\, capable ranching women who exude an internal strength\, work-ethic\, and vibrant spirit as many of her foremothers did\, while Linda Lillegraven’s landscapes showcase the soft light and open spaces over which these women roam\,” shares gallery owner\, Ann Korologos. “The predecessors of the women Howell-Sickles paints are the same women that tamed the plains and open land so skillfully depicted in the landscapes of Lillegraven.” \nDonna Howell-Sickles redefines the wary stereotypes that represented Western women during her childhood in Texas and New Mexico in the 50s and 60s. Using charcoal\, pastel\, and acrylic on paper or canvas\, Donna portrays ranching women as she knew them—strong\, capable\, humorous and bonded as sisters. Her work is rich with symbolism and allusions to classical mythology that “fits the American West like a glove.” \nLinda Lillegraven lives in Laramie\, Wyoming\, and earned a BA in Art and BS in Zoology from San Diego State University. The great open landscapes of the West\, with their changing light and seasons\, offer Lillegraven a lifetime of inspiration. Her oil and pastel works capture the transitions of color and tone of the prairie\, so subtle as to be almost invisible\, yet masterfully achieved. Lillegraven includes a minimal amount of detail while simultaneously giving the viewer a sense of big skies\, open fields\, space and scale. \nCowgirls and the Western Plains is complimented with a selection of 40 contemporary western artists\, and is on view September 25th through October 24th\, 2019. For more information\, please visit the Ann Korologos Gallery at 211 Midland Avenue in Basalt\, call 970.927.9668 or email art@korologosgallery.com.

SUMMARY:Andy Taylor: Open to the Unexpected
DESCRIPTION:Andy Taylor: Open to the Unexpected is a solo exhibition featuring water-themed regional landscapes in the colorful\, gestural style of local artist\, Andy Taylor. On view at Ann Korologos Gallery from June 26 to July 20\, 2019. Join artist Andy Taylor for a reception Thursday\, July 11th from 5 to 7PM at Ann Korologos Gallery in historic downtown Basalt. \nFor more than forty years\, Taylor has been drawing and painting scenery within a day’s drive of his studio in Carbondale\, Colorado. As an avid rafter\, Andy is inspired by the colors\, shapes\, weather and places where water changes the landscape. His loyal collectors enjoy hanging the easily identifiable landmarks found across the Colorado Plateau\, with its spectacular canyons\, high plains\, distant mesas\, winding rivers\, sparse trees and sundry vegetation. The artist often revisits the same areas to paint\, knowing the landscape has changed both in form and through his perception. \n“When you look at Andy’s work\, the common theme is water\, but through the perspective of erosion\, time and river ecosystems\,” shares gallery manager\, Caroline Iles. “He examines the contrast of water and desert\, from canyons carved by rivers to groves of cottonwood trees and spring flowers\, to dried riverbeds and mountain peaks carved by snowmelt.” \nTaylor starts his process with pen and ink sketches with marginalia\, a process he considers to be the bones of a painting and a form of meditation. His sketches are visual reminders of a scene\, but are always left incomplete\, leaving room within the process to “invent significance and freedom to make discoveries” as he paints. Familiar landscapes painted in Taylor’s gestural\, expressionistic style convey the mood of the artist\, seen through his characteristic brushwork and palette. The subjective reactions to reality in the form of shape and color are a signature of Taylor’s work. \nAndy’s work has been shown at numerous Western museums\, including the Denver Art Museum\, the Aspen Art Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum. A veteran of many one-man and group shows since the 1970s\, Taylor became a Club Artist at the prestigious Coors Western Art Show’s new Gallery at the National Western Club in 2015\, 2016\, and 2017. \nWorks by Andy Taylor will be complemented by an array of other contemporary Western artists represented by Ann Korologos Gallery\, the premier showcase for Western contemporary art in the Roaring Fork Valley. Andy Taylor: Open to the Unexpected will remain on view through July 20\, 2019. For more information\, please visit the gallery at 211 Midland Ave in Basalt\, call 970-927-9668\, or inquire online at art@korologosgallery.com.
