Adam and Anita Bradley present life-size figurative sculptures and paintings capturing a chaotic world. Mike Bily’s exhibit investigates ecosystems; Sharon Denmark captures light flowing through glass. Rachel Rowden exhibit is a portal of mysteries and Rebecca Visger provides a view from behind the wheel. And in the Community Bridge Project space\, Blake Bottoms presents self-discovery themes. \n  \nJoin us for a fun-filled scavenger hunt with prizes\, perfect for both the young and the young at heart. The activity culminates with prizes for all who participate. We also offer two figure drawing sessions on the 1st and 3rd Sundays as well as Queer Life Drawing at Gold Lion Community Café on August 20th. \n  \nMake a day of it by exploring the local eateries\, including Continental\, Stock\, Pig and Brew\, Iron Clad Pizza\, Café Zata\, and The Gold Lion. \n  \nBradley + Bradley: The Weight of Vanishing Shadows \nAdam and Anita Bradley explore the human condition through their unique mediums. Adam presents life-sized figurative sculptures in wood\, steel\, ceramics\, and smaller bronze pieces\, reflecting themes of anxiety\, loss\, and grief. Anita complements this with layered paintings and mixed media collages\, capturing the struggle for order in a chaotic world. Their intertwined approaches invite contemplation of deep human experiences. \n  \nThe exhibition will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery at Art Works and will continue through September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbstract in Nature by Mike Bily \nMike Bily’s exhibit invites you to explore the astonishing ecosystems beneath our feet\, teeming with life as diverse as coral reefs and as complex as any environment on Earth. For billions of years\, natural forces like wind\, heat\, and water have sculpted our world\, creating awe-inspiring landscapes and hidden habitats. As an artist\, Mike Bily’s work leans towards figurative art\, often categorized as abstract realism or impressionism. His spontaneous depiction captures fleeting moments and passing messages for others to witness and enjoy. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Port I Gallery at Art Works through August 16\, 2025. \n  \n  \nFound My Marbles by Sharon Denmark \nSharon Denmark’s art exhibit invites you to experience the meditative process of painting through her eyes. Working with acrylics and oils\, Sharon captures the world’s intricate forms\, from the curl of water to light filtering through glass. Her marble paintings\, inspired by her late mother’s vintage collection\, blend joy and nostalgia. Each piece reflects her deliberate choices in color and form\, encouraging viewers to uncover the layers of story and emotion within her art. \nThe exhibit will be in the Port II Gallery at Art Works through August 16\, 2025. \n  \nIt Is Caring For You by Rachel Rowden \n  \nOriginally from California\, Rachel Rowden has spent most of her adult life as a teacher and clinician. In 2023\, she discovered Nicholas Wilton’s Creative Visionary Program\, which sparked a newfound passion for painting every day. Now residing in central Virginia with an ever-growing menagerie of rescue cats\, Rachel’s artist statement reflects her unique approach to art. She believes that making art does not have to express personal thoughts or feelings; instead\, it serves as a meditation on life and the unending decisions we make subconsciously. For Rachel\, art becomes a portal into the mysteries that surround us\, offering a wonderful gift and an absolute surprise with each creation. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery at Art Works through August 16\, 2025. \nIt’s All Ahead of Us by Rebecca Visger \nRebecca Visger’s exhibit showcases impasto and impressionistic acrylic paintings of road scenes and views from behind the wheel. This series explores the road as a metaphor for the infinite potential and possibilities ahead. The paintings reflect the excitement and fear of new experiences\, symbolizing both independence and the isolation of choosing one’s own path. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery at Art Works through August 16\, 2025. \n  \nJuly 2025 All Media Show\n  \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. There is no theme this month. Call for entries is June 15 – July 13\, 2025\, and may be submitted through the online form. The juror will be Naomi Chung–an award-winning painter with an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University\, represented by the Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia for over 20 years\, and affiliated with the Art Registry Group in Washington\, DC. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery at Art Works through August 14\, 2025. Check our website for details on submitting artwork:  Call for Entries \nThe Bridge Project – Blake Bottoms \n  \nRVA Thriving Artists introduces Blake Bottoms in the most current Community Bridge Project.   Blake Bottoms explores identity\, self-discovery\, and transformation through watercolor\, using botanical symbolism to reflect human experience. Pieces like Nexus\, Entwined\, and Jesus Hands examine intersectionality\, intimacy\, and non-binary identity\, while Metamorphoses and Dionysus celebrate transformation and fluid self-expression.  Through these works\, the artist fosters dialogue on authenticity and introspection. \nThis exhibit is in the upstairs Bridge Project space at Art Works and will continue through August 30\, 2025.

In Martyrs and Ghosts Amelia encourages viewers to turn grief into action. “Martyrs” features deified birds with gold halos\, while “Ghosts” presents a shadow flock of endangered species. Everything that ever was on earth is still here—fascinating.   The 130-140 million people born each year—all matter\, changing shape—a constant evolution of material. \n  \nJoshua Leland Yurges asks us to consider two stories in his life: a young person working with his dad\, everyday learning carpentry—the tools\, the wood.  Then 20 years later\, working at Whole Foods—in the prepared food department baking bread in hotel pans and baking sheets. \n  \nA lady I worked with wanted the food to be cut in the pans the same way\, every time\, by everyone. After a few people failed to follow verbal direction\, she drew a diagram for all employees to view and initial. Three cuts down\, seven cuts across. 32 evenly cut pieces\, every time. And this was the beginning of a series “32 Pieces of Pie” that I am still trying to get right 11 years later.  \nYurges cites these instances because they both help feed his desire to create work that has a repetitive act. He enjoys the meditative process of pattern in the many ways it can manifest; stripes\, a series of boxes\, making the same cut five hundred times in a row. Life is always providing material and ideas for me to use and expand upon. It is my job to see the spark\, make the connection\, and explore what could be. Never stop being curious. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \n  \nDARK ART ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes and is open to all artists and all mediums. \n  \nThe theme is “dark art”. After all it is Halloween\, and a spooky exhibit seems fitting. The juror will be Noah Scalin. Learn more about the juror by visiting his website: Click here. \n  \nCall for entries is September 15th – October 14\, 2024. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork: Call for Entries.   \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n  \n  \nTextile Tales of Interiors by Sarah Wiley \nWith a passion for interior design and all things miniature\, Sarah Wiley brings these interests together and creates rooms in miniature. Wiley is a self-taught artist\, both in her former career in interior design and now in textile art. Using a machine’s process\, when drawing a scene\, it must be created sequentially\, even though the original design on paper and pen is not in that order. Using an embroidery machine\, Wiley creates the image\, layer by layer. By repurposing interior design memo samples and used fabrics\, she creates a composition. The details build slowly as she assembles\, chooses\, and places each successive piece of fabric. With a keen eye for detail\, she takes special care to drape the fold of a curtain or to stuff a cushion. \n  \nTextile Tales of Interiors invites viewers to explore the combination of art and interior design through the medium of fabric. This art show celebrates the beauty\, creativity\, and versatility of textiles as they transform ordinary rooms into extraordinary spaces. Each piece on display offers a unique interpretation of an interior\, highlighting the rich colors\, textures\, and patterns that textiles bring to our living spaces. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \nThe Altar America Project \nMore than an art show\, this is a festival of cross-cultural ancestor remembrance celebration inspired by Dia de los Muertos and many other ancestor remembrance celebrations from around the world. \n  \nJoin us for the 3rd annual Altar America Project exhibit. We have invited artists to submit proposals for altar creations of all sorts. And we encourage artists who have created altars for the previous exhibits to create new altars or to expand and/or change their current altars. This year CRIMEBABIES will be presenting an AI interactive altar. \n  \nCultures worldwide have numerous ancestor remembrance traditions\, but America does not\, particularly because American ethnocide has not wanted people of color to collectively gather\, remember their past\, and retell their stories. Ethnocide is the destruction of culture while keeping the people. Art Works issued an altars call-for-entries for this exhibit to create altars. The aim is for the greater RVA community to see these examples\, and become inspired to engage in their own\, culturally relevant acts of remembrance. This exhibit will be in the Port and Centre Galleries. \n  \nThe exhibit opens on October 25th.  Then on November 3rd\, the Altars Festival RVA 2024 will be held at Art Works and is a collaboration with The Sustainable Culture Lab\, Philanthropy Journal. The Altar America Project and festivals counter ethnocide by empowering people to remember\, sustain\, and celebrate their culture\, while also providing a safe communal space for coping with the generational trauma and loss brought on by American ethnocide. \nThe exhibit closes on November 10\, 2024. \n  \n  \nMore Events at Art Works in October   \nFigure Drawing Sessions\nJoin us for live figure drawing sessions the 1st and 3rd Sundays of October from 1 pm – 4 pm at Art Works. Hosted by RVA Thriving Artists. Click here for information. \n \nRVA Thriving Artists Monthly Meet-up \nIt’s a meet-up. Network with other artists\, exchange ideas\, have a beverage and chill.   \nLocation: Benchtop Brewing \nOctober 17\,  6 pm – 7 pm. \n\nArtoberVA Scavenger Hunt and Social Media Challenge at Art Works\nWe invite visitors to an ArtoberVA scavenger hunt that takes guests throughout the 25\,000 square foot facilities\, viewing fine art\, looking for clues and culminating in a prize.  And don’t miss out on participating in the social-media Artober posting challenge.

Convenient parking is available at the public garage on East 5th Street\, and we’ll validate your ticket. \n  \nExtend your visit by exploring nearby restaurants like Stock\, Continental\, Pig and Brew\, Jubilee\, Iron Clad Pizza\, Café Zata\, and The Gold Lion for a delightful meal. Join us for a day of creativity\, art\, and delicious food! \n4th Friday\, September 27 at Art Works. \nOur 21st anniversary calls for cake and champagne—a great celebration of art in the community. Please join us on September 27th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the opening reception of new art shows. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments\, and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. \n  \nThe fall art scene is buzzing with creativity and innovation as three talented artists showcase their solo exhibitions\, each exploring unique themes like repetition\, simple pleasures\, and the ever-changing nature of life. Joshua Leland Yurges delves into the concept of everything that ever was and still is\, Rebecca Visger captures the essence of enjoyment from snack food to charcuteries\, and Crystal James reflects on embracing the present amidst life’s constant evolution. \n  \nMeanwhile\, RJ Barber takes us on a thrilling journey with his exhibit\, Alien Arrivals\, offering a glimpse into interactions with extraterrestrial beings. Three long-time friends and colleagues\, Tom Adair-Luke\, Jim Brown\, and Gregg Carbo present a retrospective of their work. Additionally\, the monthly All Media Show promises a diverse and eclectic mix of topics\, styles\, and mediums. \n  \nThe exhibits continue through October 19\, 2024\, except for Joshua Leland Yurges’ show which continues through November 16\, 2024. The event is free and open to the public.  Don’t forget\, parking is also free. Come and join us for a night of art and celebration. Then have dinner at one of the restaurants in Manchester. \n  \nExhibits September 27 – October 19\, 2024 \nWhat Once Was\, Still Is\, Just Different by Joshua Leland Yurges \n  \nThink about it. After a few people failed to follow verbal directions\, she drew a diagram for all employees to view and initial. Three cuts down\, seven cuts across. 32 evenly cut pieces\, every time. He enjoys the meditative process of pattern in the many ways it can manifest; stripes\, a series of boxes\, making the same cut five hundred times in a row. \n  \nLife is always providing material and ideas for me to use and expand upon. It is my job to see the spark\, make the connection\, and explore what could be. Never stop being curious. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. This exhibit continues through November 16\, 2024. \n  \nNothing is Static. Even the Mona Lisa is falling apart by Crystal James \nCrystal James’ art delves into the themes of youth and beauty\, food\, and death. \nYouth and beauty are often seen as synonymous\, but beauty goes beyond the surface level. When depicting youthful subjects Crystal captures the essence of the subject’s innocence\, curiosity\, and wonder.  Crystal celebrates the beauty that comes from living in the present moment\, unencumbered by the weight of past experiences. \nDeath becomes a prominent theme in our lives as we grow older with an awareness of our mortality. Food is a reminder of this reality; life is sweet but short. Through her art\, Crystal explores the bittersweet nature of this cycle\, celebrating the joy of food while acknowledging that we will not live forever. \nUltimately\, Crystal’s art is a meditation on the impermanence of life\, and the beauty that can be found in every stage of the journey. Through her depictions of youth\, beauty\, food\, and death\, she inspires viewers to be present in the moment\, and to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world around them. This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery. \nLittle Pleasures by Rebecca Visger \nRebecca Visger’s Little Pleasures is a series of acrylic still-life paintings that celebrate the pleasure of food and drinks. From gas-station snacks to artisanal cheese plates and charcuterie boards\, these paintings showcase a range of indulgent foods that are not consumed for practical purposes but for pure enjoyment. The exhibit serves as a lighthearted reminder that sometimes it’s okay to indulge in the simple pleasures of life. The still-life paintings are largely realistic in style\, but with playful subversions in composition\, scale\, and color scheme. We invite you to join us in this celebration of food and the joy it brings. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \nAlien Arrivals by RJ Barber \nRJ Barber has always been a Sy-Fy fan and enjoys the idea of the Aliens as a Cultural phenomenon as much as a scientific reality.  He started a project\, Alien Arrivals cartoons when the COVID quarantine went into effect. It was a way for him to stay in touch with my friends. He mailed six original postcard designs each year to his mailing list. Barber enjoys the idea of retro artwork as Snail Mail and apparently\, so do others.  For this exhibit there will be an interactive component where visitors will be able to mail postcards. He explains his inspiration and process: \n  \nH.G. Wells was the English Author who touched off the idea of Alien Invasions in popular culture in his 1896 novel\, The War of the Worlds. Science Fiction took off in America with the Roswell sightings in 1947. The government coverup probably did more to popularize the genre than any other factor. The introduction of the iPhone in 2007 meant that everyone had a camera with them and the number of UFO sightings exploded!  \n  \nWe haven’t had a revelation of the existence of the Aliens as in The Day the Earth Stood Still\, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation on who or what the Aliens might be!  \n  \nThe inspiration for his drawings comes from petroglyphs from all over the world\, particularly the ones from the Australian Outback that depict the Dream Time of the indigenous peoples. \nOne set of rock paintings in Kimberly\, Western Australia spoke to me and would not leave my head. I drew them obsessively for two months until they morphed into my cartoons you see today. My premise is that the Aliens have been sent to try to figure out what these crazy Homo Sapiens are doing! The Aliens mean no harm\, but they are agents of Chaos and wherever they appear\, pandemonium ensues. Through the Aliens\, I am able to comment on the human condition as a third-party observer. I have always been a storyteller and the artwork and the Adventures of the Lil’ Blue Aliens are linked together. I enjoy the ironic humor of the Aliens trying to make sense of human behavior and I hope you will too! \n  \n3 x 3 \n  \nTom Adair-Luke\, Jim Brown\, and Gregg Carbo are friends and colleagues with a common thread of a love for art. They will be sharing a retrospective of their art in the Port Gallery II from August 23 through September 20th. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes and is open to all artists and all mediums. Call for entries is August 15th – September 16\, 2024. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork:   Call for Entries \n  \n  \nMore Events at Art Works in September \nFigure Drawing Sessions\nJoin us for live figure drawing sessions the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month from 1 pm – 4 pm at Art Works. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. As a precursor to Richmond’s Pridefest the exhibits open with a special performance by talented artists celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. \n  \nIt’s a beautiful\, dreamy\, mysterious\, humorous\, and a very pridefully queer sort of place this 4th Friday at Art Works. The four solo shows\, the queer show: Color Theory\, and All Media show opening this month offer all these elements. \n  \nThe exhibits continue through September 21\, 2024.  The event is free and open to the public.  Don’t forget\, parking is also free. Come and join us for a night of art and celebration. Then have dinner at one of the restaurants in Manchester. \n  \nExhibits August 23 – September 21\, 2024   \n  \n  \nColor Theory: The Richmond Queer Art Experience curated by Chris Schoen \nIn this exhibit Chris Schoen brings together local artists to share an experience in the world of the queer. \n  \nEnvision a world where lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) people\, with intersecting identities\, thrive. This exhibit is an expression of a diverse group of artists sharing and expressing a vision of this world. \n  \nCall for entries is July 15th – August 12th\, 2024. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork: Call for Entries \n  \n  \nA Place Where Dreams Come True by Olga Rokhmanyuk \nOlga Rokhmanyuk\, a successful interior designer\, window dresser\, and advertising professional from Ukraine\, faced a challenging situation when she arrived in America and didn’t know the language. Overwhelmed and silenced\, Olga set out to discover a new life and found solace in nature. It was here that she picked up her paintbrushes and started capturing the beauty of all she saw—from the sea to flowers\, landscapes\, and all parts of nature where there are no language barriers\, only the language of great love to humans. We are pleased to announce Olga’s upcoming exhibit\, which is a testament to her artistic skills\, full of color\, imagination\, and a reflection of her journey from silence to the vibrant world of art. The exhibit is in the Centre Gallery. \n  \n  \nCorpus Ephemera: Paintings by Sherrie Miller \nSherrie Miller’s exhibit\, Corpus Ephemera\, showcases a collection of paintings that transport viewers to a magical\, dreamlike world where animals take center stage\, and the human presence is subdued. Through her art\, Miller delves into the complex themes of mortality and our smallness in the universe\, challenging us to confront the ideas that we often avoid or fear. \n  \nDrawing inspiration from old-world fairy-tale elements and magical realism\, Miller creates a unique inner world inhabited by animals and artifacts of the human presence\, where all things manifest together within a dreamlike environment. This exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in exploring the darker\, more hidden aspects of being human within the space of our limited existence. The exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n\nPiecing It Together: Mosaics by Nancy Kline and Jody Rathgeb\nPiecing It Together is an exciting exhibit featuring the works of two talented mosaic artists\, Nancy Kline and Jody Rathgeb. \n  \nIn their separate studios at Art Works\, Nancy and Jody create mosaic pieces ranging from intricate jewelry to large wall hangings. For this exhibit they collaborate to showcase the unique style and techniques of both artists\, including decorative art and statements in mosaic. In addition\, an educational piece will be included\, providing insight into the materials used in mosaic and the process of creating these intricate works of art. Experience the beauty and creativity of modern mosaics! The exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n  \nDeConstrucThings by N Blake Seals\n\nBlake Seals is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in NYC\, where he studied illustration and fine arts. He has a keen interest in exploring the relationship between seemingly disparate disciplines\, such as comic book illustration and abstract mark-making. Seals draws inspiration from city landmarks\, pop culture\, and non-representational art\, and seeks to examine the intersection of the so-called high and low arts markets as a means of artistic expression.\n\n  \nSeals’ mixed media digital paintings are a combination of impressionistic drawings\, hand-drawn abstract doodles\, and painted color fields on paper. These elements are then transformed and manipulated on the computer\, before being output onto various substrates. Through his art\, Seals invites us to question the traditional boundaries between different art forms\, and to consider the possibilities that arise when they intersect. \n  \nWhen not making art\, over the years\, Blake has served in the US Navy Reserve and volunteered as a firefighter/paramedic. He has also owned and managed recording facilities\, worked on Marvel and Archie comics\, and traveled the world as a black belt in Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do. Currently\, he works as an organ transplant coordinator. His artwork has been shown in New York City. Blake is a family man\, with a wife\, two sons\, three daughters\, a granddaughter\, a cat\, two snakes\, and a leopard gecko. This exhibit will be in the Port II Gallery \n  \n  \n  \nColor Theory ALL MEDIA SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. SUMMARY:July – August @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:July in Richmond can be sweltering but we will make sure the gallery is a cool oasis from the heat with interesting things to see and do. Since it’s National Watermelon Day on July 31st\, stop in for a slice and join in an artful scavenger hunt.   \n  \nAs always\, we’ll be hosting our popular 4th Friday reception as well as an artist meet-up and two figure drawing sessions. And if you can’t make it to one of these events\, don’t worry – we’re open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to come see the new art on display. Choose from Basic City Beer\, Continental\, Pig and Brew\, Jubilee\, Iron Clad Pizza\, and The Gold Lion\, to name a few\, for a delicious meal. \n  \n  \nExhibits July 26 – August 17\, 2024 \nPlastic Fossils: Recent Works by Eric Manwiller \nImagine a world where earth and plastic lie buried playfully\, side-by-side\, for a future civilization to ponder. That’s what Eric Manwiller imagined in his exhibit at Art Works. A Richmond-based artist\, Manwiller combines painting and sculpture. And recently he has added mixed materials like casts of 1980s action figures\, glitter\, flip sequins\, and various textiles to his work. The results evoke images of “plastic fossils” and explore issues of environmental importance. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \n  \n  \nTech Utopia by G. Terado \n  \n\n Terado has a degree in media art and animation from the Art Institute of Philadelphia. He brings these skills and talent to this exhibit. Tech Utopia is a speculation of a future post-dystopian life alongside the hope and faith for organic life successfully coexisting within a technological ecosystem. Terado’s inspiration comes from the recent rise in generative AI and the staggering use of mobile devices and virtual reality. The artwork is produced in graphite\, ink\, and watercolor.\n\n  \nThis exhibit will be in the Port II Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \nAbstract Expressionism by Ray Sutton   \n  \nWe are delighted to share a message from Ray Sutton\, who sees abstract expressionism as a unique voice of freedom and unencumbered joy. During his visits to museums and galleries\, Ray is always captivated by this art form\, which urges the viewer to stop and spend time contemplating the color\, line\, and forms in each painting. As we celebrate the beauty and power of abstract expressionism\, we join Ray in appreciating the unique voice of this art form. \n  \n  \nThis exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \nWelcome to the Menagerie of Horrible Darlings by Ginny Loving \nUsing porcelain\, clay\, mixed media\, and repurposed fabrics\, Ginny Loving transforms lumps of clay into an idea–from the macabre and humorous to the darkly beautiful and evocative. Through meticulous work and forged in fire\, a sculpture is born. Each exquisitely handcrafted piece is completely unique–like a bone fragment\, there will never be another like it. \n  \nDeliciously creepy\, from our haunt to yours\, welcome to the MENAGERIE.  This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \nLet’s Rescue the Environment by Nancy Bruce \n  \nNancy Bruce is a mixed media artist working primarily with recycled materials\, things she has found\, saved\, and things that people have given her. Her artwork is on canvas or panels. Nancy is very much concerned with the condition of the climate. She says: \n  \nFor me it is the most important of our many messes. Whatever else you may believe if we screw up the earth badly enough\, we are all done for. I wonder where and how we will live if relentless wildfires and rising ocean levels consume the land that we are accustomed to living on. It may become impossible to have a fixed place to call home. The larger pieces in this show represent homes that we may one day find ourselves living in if we allow the environment to continue to deteriorate. The dark colors that I have used for most of the smaller ones represent the baked earth that may be in our future. At its birth our earth went through so much to become a place that we could call home. Why are we not doing a better job of taking care of it? The exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \nALL MEDIA SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. There is no theme for this exhibit\, anything goes\, any medium. Call for entries is June 15th – July 15\, 2024. The juror is Amelia Rafle. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork:   Call for Entries    This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMore Events at Art Works in July \nFigure Drawing Sessions\nJoin us for live figure drawing sessions the 1st and 3rd Sundays of July from 1 pm – 4 pm at Art Works. And if you can’t make it to one of these events\, don’t worry – we’re open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to come see the new art on display. Plus\, parking is easy at the public garage on East 5th Street. And we’ll validate your ticket\, just ask in the office. Make a day of it by exploring the restaurants in the area like Basic City Beer\, Continental\, Pig and Brew\, Jubilee\, Iron Clad Pizza\, Café Zata\, and The Gold Lion to name a few. \n  \n4th Friday June 28th at Art Works. \n  \nJoin us on June 28th from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception of new art shows. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. This month we are presenting Plastic Fossils: Recent Works by Eric Manwiller. Imagine discovering our present in the future—what would it look like? Manwiller has an idea. \n  \nAlso\, we are hosting James Torres’ Eye of the Beholder\, A License to See: Photographs by Bollin Milner\, Nature as Architect by Jenny Wilson\, Thread\, Twine & Rope by Richard Harding\, and the June All Media Show by local artists. \n  \nThe exhibits continue through July 20th and Manwiller’s continues through August 17th. The event is free and open to the public.  Don’t forget\, parking is also free. Come and join us for a night of art and celebration. Then have dinner at one of the restaurants in Manchester. \n  \nPlastic Fossils: Recent Works by Eric Manwiller \nImagine a world where earth and plastic lie buried playfully\, side-by-side\, for a future civilization to ponder. That’s what Eric Mainwiller imagined in his exhibit at Art Works. A Richmond-based artist\, Mainwiller combines painting and sculpture. And recently he has added mixed materials like casts of 1980s action figures\, glitter\, flip sequins\, and various textiles to his work. The results evoke images of “plastic fossils” and explore issues of environmental importance. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery through August 17\, 2024. \n  \n  \nA License to See: Photographs by Bollin Millner \nBollin Millner quotes Joel Meyerowitz who speaks to photographers: “Once you have a camera in your hand\, you have a license to see.” \n  \nMillner uses his camera to frame the world–roadways\, doorways\, lofts\, quiet interiors and on the street. He is entranced by shapes\, forms and lines made by human hands—rectangles\, squares\, circles\, arches\, as well as spirals\, waves and patterns that occur in nature. Reflections and repetition are additional bonuses. In this exhibit Millner captures a sense of harmony and peace\, where the discrete elements relate to one another in compelling ways. He usually does not feature people\, but rather leaves space for the viewers themselves to populate the image. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Port II Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \nEye of the Beholder by James Torres \nJames Torres is a collector and creator of art. As an artist\, he has an attachment to old\, damaged\, forgotten\, and discarded items. He finds his “perfect treasures” by visiting thrift shops\, yard sales\, estate sales\, and even the occasional junkyard.  To many\, these objects may seem useless; however\, for Torres they are the tools he uses to tell a story. Art is all around us. In the process of assemblage\, Torres curiosity comes through as he creates a new narrative for forgotten items. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nNature as Architect by Jenny Wilson \nJenny Wilson is a professional musician and artist. She was a student at the High School of Art and Design in NYC and studied dance at the Alvin Ailey/Pearl Lang School in Manhattan. Interested in almost all aspects of visual and performing arts\, she pursued music as her profession. Jenny graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Flute Performance. She worked as the art teacher at the Community School in Camden\, Maine and for the Camden Shakespeare Company as company musician. After graduating\, she went to Switzerland and studied flute at the Winterthur Konservatorium with Marianne Stucki and piano with ECM recording artist Art Lande. Her graduate studies in music brought her to West Virginia where she earned her Master of Music degree and a position at the Morgantown Learning Academy as their music and art teacher and was an adjunct in the music department of the University of Maryland in Frostburg. Jenny currently teaches private music lessons and workshops. \n  \nHer paintings are best described as contemporary landscape or contemporary abstract. She is very focused on the natural world of plants\, clouds\, sea and sky. She says…”music is a temporal art that only moves forward while my painting gives me the opportunity to reverse direction. Painting allows me to stop time\, to make choices in slow motion and to experience the art of composing in a whole new way. I try to incorporate marks that allude to the structure of the piece and that give some architecture to the image.” \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \nThread\, Twine & Rope by Richard Harding \nIt all started with a newly financed industrial sewing machine. Richard Harding started working with the machine expecting quick results. The process was challenging and time-consuming. However\, through experimentation and creativity he discovered a passion for creating sculptures using leftover materials. The shapes and forms of the sculptures are influenced by the cords being used\, with details added through intricate stitching patterns. Each piece takes shape gradually. Richard balances planned elements with spontaneous changes during the creation process. Richard is inspired by nature and a desire to bring a sense of calm and interest to home décor. The sculptures are meant to spark curiosity and wonder in those who view them. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJune 2024 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \n  \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. Mark Eanes will juror the exhibit. To learn about Mark\, click here. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n  \nThere is no theme for this exhibit\, anything goes\, any medium. Call for entries is May 15th – June 17\, 2024. Submit your entries through our online form. Check our website for details on submitting your artwork:   Call for Entries      \n  \n  \nMore Events at Art Works in June \nFigure Drawing Sessions\nJoin us for live figure drawing sessions the 1st and 3rd Sundays of June from 1 pm – 4 pm at Art Works. SUMMARY:May - June @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a variety of experiences in May—including our first digital interactive exhibit. We have seen museums that provide visitors with the experience of interacting and becoming part of a work of art and it’s been our intention to present an exhibit of this kind.  On 4th Friday\, May 24th Art Works is giving Richmonders this experience as well as several other exhibitions. \n  \nOn May 10th we are hosting the annual Maggie Walker Governors School art exhibit. On May 12th we’ll have a special treat for Mother’s Day. \n  \nDon’t forget to mark your calendar for the monthly Artists Meet-up hosted by RVA Thriving Artists at Benchtop Brewing and the open Figure Drawing Sessions on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at Art Works. \n  \nAnd if you can’t make it to one of these events\, don’t worry – we’re open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to come see the new art on display. Plus\, parking is easy at the public garage on East 5th Street. And we’ll validate your ticket\, just ask in the office. \n  \nBut that’s not all – make a day of it by exploring the restaurants in the area. Choose from Basic City Beer\, Continental\, Pig and Brew\, Jubilee\, Iron Clad Pizza\, and The Gold Lion for a delicious meal after your art adventure. \n  \nMay 10\, 2024 \nMaggie Walker Governor’s School Senior Art Exhibit \nThe annual Maggie Walker Governor’s School Senior Art Exhibit opens at Art Works on May 10th. Jeff Hall provides the inspiration and guidance for the visual art students at Maggie L. Walker where he supports a broad range of experiences in both two and three dimensions and a wide variety of media.   The students present their work at a reception on May 10th\, 6- 8 p.m.  The show continues through May 18\, 2024. The exhibit will be in the main gallery. \n  \n4th Friday May 24th at Art Works \nOn the evening of May 24\, 2024\, thanks to Katrina Walker and a host of visual and performing artists\, Richmond art lovers will experience digital\, interactive sculpture and a perfect storm of artwork\, dance\, and live music. What is digital interactive sculpture? The answer is: it depends. Like the theory of relativity\, it depends on where you stand—what you see is different from the person next to you\, or across the room from you. In this exhibit\, you will get a chance to immerse yourself in the exhibit—become integrated into art. \n  \nSpeaking of integration\, Mike Bily through his explorations of greenhouse conservatories discovered that as living beings\, plants can be interpreted as extensions of our environment or of ourselves. His exhibit\, Planet Plant: Taming the Wild shares the deeply personal mystery of plants. Mariia Svdidan brings us All the Things that Matter. Mark Eanes’ exhibit\, Endeavors opens.  And of course\, there is the monthly All Media Show—a focal point of 4th Fridays and showcases art by local artists. \n  \nJoin us on May 24th from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. Parking is free. The exhibits continue through June 22nd. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is convenient and free. \n  \n  \nMirrors: The Intersection of Movement\, Music\, and Introspection curated by Katrina Walker \nWhat is digital interactive sculpture? The answer is: it depends. Like the theory of relativity\, it depends on where you stand—what you see is different from the person next to you\, or across the room from you. And not in a metaphorical way\, but the actual mechanics of your eyes and workings of the sculpture. But wait\, immerse yourself in the exhibit—become part of it. You will get a chance to have yourself projected and integrated\, becoming part of the artwork. \n  \nThis exhibit\, curated by Katrina Walker\, is an art exhibit featuring a digital\, interactive sculpture and (on opening night) a perfect storm of art\, dance\, and live music. \n  \nOne day Katrina Walker wrote down in detail a vision\, a dream that wouldn’t let her go. The symbolism of introspection inspired her so deeply that she wanted others to experience it. So\, to make the dream a reality\, she sought to bring gifted strangers with larger-than-life talent together for one night only. \n  \n  \nOn the evening of May 24th\, Richmond art lovers will experience an undeniably rare collaboration. The exhibit continues through June 22nd and visitors are invited to interact and create their own “reflections” and “see” themselves in a new way. \n  \nThe exhibit uses a theme of mirrors as a symbol of self-reflection and introspection. As you participate\, investigate the borderline and contrasts between digital and analog worlds\, the virtual and physical experience. Investigate order versus chaos. The first of this series\, Rozin’s Wooden Mirror explores the inner workings of image creation and human visual perception. \n  \nContributors are:\n  \nDanny Rozin\, an educator and award-winning artist\, creates awe-inspiring\, interactive sculptures and digital art. He is a professor at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Fabian Almazan\, recently accepted into Harvard University\, is a grammy-nominated jazz pianist/composer who promotes the understanding of (and positive impact on) the interdependence and connectedness among humans and our planet. \n  \nRadio B is a revered emcee\, entrepreneur\, and purveyor of excellence. He builds organizations and platforms that entertain\, nurture artists’ growth\, and enrich hip-hop culture. \n  \nRoberto Whitaker aka Aero\, da Avatar\, a hip-hop artist/rapper\, and choreographer/dancer\, is a compelling storyteller who has danced with the Hiplet Ballerinas dance company\, the Latin Ballet of Virginia and with (and in tribute to) the renowned duo\, Les Twins. \n  \nKat Vivaldi is a talented artist and filmmaker with experience in feature films and a background in interactive digital art. \nTreen (organizer) developed a love for the arts at a young age in the public school system. She played in the symphonic band\, orchestra\, jazz band\, marching band\, the pit orchestra for plays/musicals\, sang in gospel choirs and continued music education in college (major in business/minor in music). \n  \nMary Puart is a Vaganova Ballet Academy graduate and has performed\, danced and choreographed all over the world. In her vlog\, Mary explores topics such as certain harmful aspects of ballet culture and extreme body standards. She is a compassionate advocate for a healthy (non-toxic) pursuit of artistry. \n  \nThe exhibit and experience will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nPlanet Plants: Taming the Wild by Mike Bily \nIn this exhibit Mike Bily takes us with him on an exploration of greenhouse conservatories. During the pandemic there was an upswing in the popularity of plants and gardens and so it was for Bily. Visiting a botanical conservatory during the fall and winter months shelters the visitor\, but the plantings and foliage present a striking contrast against the clear cerulean sky. The natural light through the pane glass is wonderful! Visual art naturally belongs in a vibrant garden conservatory. Mike Bily captured this in his paintings. \n  \nHe discovered that as living beings\, plants can be interpreted as extensions of our environment or of ourselves. Meanwhile\, the effects of climate change materialized in the form of wildfires and more frequent natural disasters. In an uncertain environment\, living material—or its likeness—has proven a useful medium with powerful creative imagery. \n  \nBily sees container plants as a metaphor for the way we try to constrain nature and present only the best version of it. Plants are mysterious\, but also deeply personal. Unlike other media of cultural creation\, we absorb them into our bodies\, and that allows them different recurrence of meaning for us. \n  \nThe exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \nAll the Things that Matter by Mariia Sveidan \nAll the Things That Matter is a journey of life. \n  \nMariia Sveidan describes this: \nBattling past pain\, inner demons\, depression\, and trauma. Going through a path of enlightenment\, you can see pain but at the same time there is the presence of hope and healing. Healing can have many colors; it can be in the form of blossoming flowers\, or a walk through a garden\, rich and flourishing. It’s a dance of the moon\, the sun and nature. After pain comes anger\, after anger comes acceptance\, afterwards comes the feeling of letting go\, then comes forgiveness\, until finally you are healed. Healing is a journey\, an emotional\, mental\, and spiritual one where all chakras have healed and found balance\, all traumas found peace\, where the heart has been purified and the third eye is beaming with light. That’s when the body and soul become one\, one unity\, one light\, one source. This exhibit is about my journey to attain hope\, healing\, peace and enlightenment\, with vibrant colors and expressive brush strokes. \nAll the Things that Matter will be in the Centre Gallery. \nEndeavors by Mark Eanes \nMark Eanes is a painter\, printmaker\, photographer\, curator\, and educator who currently lives and works in Richmond\, Virginia. Prior to living in Virginia\, Mark lived in the Bay Area of California since 1970. He holds a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Eanes is Professor Emeritus from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco\, where he taught drawing and painting courses for over thirty-three years.  His list of accomplishments is long and impressive: teaching at many art institutes\, chair of the Visual Arts Department at CalArts\, and conducting private lessons and workshops throughout California and Italy. \n  \nHe talks about his process. As a painter I’ve always enjoyed looking at the world in all its richness and complexity…then giving expression to those glimpses. However\, in recent years I have turned to photography as well – to exercise and strengthen another muscle for seeing. To capture a specific moment in time that no one else sees\, or will ever see\, is rewarding beyond words. Whenever I travel with the camera\, I feel alert\, awake\, and aware of all that is before me. My painting process consists of many layers…time and material. When I’m in the studio nothing else matters. Time is irrelevant. No plans for the future\, no past regrets. I’ll put on some great tunes turn it up loud and break out the color\, the tubes\, brushes\, and rags. Then enter a new piece with ferocity and abandon. After awhile…. I’ll sit back and just look. Turn the piece upside down\, then dive in again. I enjoy moving from knowing to not knowing. From reckless abandon to careful consideration. It is never boring or tedious for I feel as though I am always betting the house on the final outcome. My favorite moment is when the conversation is over. And that can take days\, weeks\, even months. But to know there is nothing more to be done\, that everything I could possibly say has been said\, and at last I can step away and think to myself\, it works. The exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \n  \nMay 2024 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. SUMMARY:4th Friday Art Shows and Opening Reception @ Art Works!
It is a juried show with cash prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. Ashe Laughlin will juror the exhibit. SUMMARY:April - May @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day and the Virginia Historical Garden Week inspired us for the April programs at Art Works. The Recycle Show will be on display all month through April 20th—a perfect tribute to Earth Day.  See how artists recycle\, reuse\, upcycle and repurpose. \n  \nThen on 4th Friday\, April 26th all the exhibits at Art Works change.  Join us for the opening reception. Can’t make it on 4th Friday? No worries\, we’re open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plus\, parking is easy at the public garage on East 5th Street\, and we’ll validate your ticket. \n  \nDon’t forget to mark your calendar for the monthly Artists Meet-up hosted by RVA Thriving Artists at Benchtop Brewing and the open Figure Drawing Sessions on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at Art Works. \n  \nMake a day of it by exploring the restaurants in the area. From Basic City Beer to Continental\, Pig and Brew\, Jubilee\, Iron Clad Pizza\, and The Gold Lion there’s something for everyone. Ask about special offerings from these eateries and enjoy a delicious meal after your art adventure. \n  \n4th Friday April 26 at Art Works \n  \nOn April 26th the new exhibits open at Art Works including the Flora and Fauna All Media exhibit by local artists—Virginians love their gardens—tame and wild. And the students from the Henrico County Public Schools Center for Arts have installed their art in the main gallery with their annual senior-students’ art show. The RVA Photography Collective returns this year with another exhibit of Richmond—each photographer shoots identical locations and achieves different perspectives. And Paul Rosner gets us to dive deep into a molecular view of things with his exhibit\, Xphemera. \n  \nJoin us on April 26th 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for 4th Friday in Manchester—the opening reception. Meet the artists and enjoy live music\, refreshments and libations sponsored by RVA Thriving Artists. Parking is free.  The exhibits continue through May 18th  with the exception of the student show which ends on May 5th.  This event is free and open to the public. Parking is convenient and free. \nHenrico Center for the Arts \nSenior students of the Henrico Center for the Arts program exhibit their artwork which represents four years of study. The exhibit features a myriad of art forms and immerging perspectives. This exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. The exhibit opens on April 26th and continues through – May 5\, 2024. \n  \nCreative Journeys: RVA Photo Collective Showcase \nThe RVA Photography Collective\, a group of photographers agree on a specific area in Richmond and over a period of two weeks individually conduct photo shoots in that location. The photographers share no more than 10 photographs and provide no commentary. \n  \nThe collective artistic theme is understanding how different people choose to portray the same subject. This allows each photographer to see alternative approaches\, creative ideas\, compositional styles\, stories\, or perspectives and in doing so\, more objectively understand theirs. \n  \nThe exhibit is curated by Janneke Kotte and will be in the Centre Gallery. \n  \nXphemera by Paul Rosner \nThis exhibit featuring resin-assemblage compositions evokes the unseen aspects of existence. Paul Rosner explains: \n  \nThe extremes of the Universe are beyond our senses. Quantum particles\, infinitesimal bio-entities\, the vast unknown regions of space – we can only surmise their form and appearance. I use the medium of resin-assemblage to try and channel/shape vague intuitions into compositions that (hopefully) evoke elements of obscure origin coming into focus. Resin’s amber-like properties seem appropriate to capture and preserve these ephemeral imaginings. \n  \nThis exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery. \n  \nALL MEDIA ART SHOW   Flora and Fauna \nSpring is here\, and it’s time for the annual Historic Garden Week in Virginia! From April 20th to April 27th\, Virginians across the state will be opening their historic gardens for all to enjoy. And what better way to celebrate the beauty of flora and fauna than with Art Works’ April All Media Show? \n  \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. Amy Chan will jury the show. Click here to learn more about the juror. There will be prizes for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place. The show is open to all artists and all mediums. This exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n  \nCall for entries is March 15th  – April 15\, 2024. Submit your entries through our online form.
