SUMMARY:September-October Exhibits @ Art Works!
DESCRIPTION:See 5 new exhibits and 80 working artist studios. Admission is free and open to the public Tuesdays – Sundays\, 11 am – 5 pm.  These exhibits continue through October 21st\,\,  2023. Exhibits include: \nDefense Mechanisms by Neal Gwaltney \nNeil Gwaltney’s paintings unveil uncertainty from one moment to the next. Visual comprehension is compromised by presenting familiar imagery in an unfamiliar way. Perspectives shift\, spatial parameters redefine\, and gender roles distort\, blurring the lines of distinction. Ambiguity and contextual fluctuations are the inspirations for his work. Gwaltney manipulates the images through a process of aggressive cropping\, unconventional angles\, and simplification of forms. Deviation from the familiar multiplies the possibilities of a single image. Experimentation with various media allows the subject matter and the surrounding space to struggle for identity within the painting. All of this has no predetermined end. Once he starts working\, he does not force any part of the process to adhere to any initial ideas. The ultimate meaning is the uncertainty of the images and the corresponding emotional responses of the viewers. The exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nRecent Work by Amy! \nAmy is from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and now lives in Virginia. Amy Burczyk’s exhibit spans both states. A painter\, an interior designer\, a project manager for LG Flint General Contractors\, and a mother of three—her paintings are a reaction to the transitions that life has taken her. Thick with symbolism\, the imagery invites strangers to look deep into her life story and dares viewers to relate. The paintings are whimsy and hope derived from real life strife and upheaval. She uses characters like the polar bear to identify with. Polar bears are cute\, but fierce; strong\, but on the verge of extinction. “We all walk that line\,” we want to know that we will be here forever\, but every one of us at some point is that polar bear.” This exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery. \nRecent Works by Corinne Schofield \n  \nCorinne Schofield explores simple organic shapes in monochromatic tones when she compiles her colored pencil drawings. Lines divide the space which allows the organic shapes to start\, stop\, flow and fold over each other. These delicate detailed drawings will be on exhibit in the Corner Gallery. \nQuotable Person of Cultural Interest by Robert Hoekman Jr. \nRobert Hoekman Jr. is an artist who defies traditional writing conventions. After spending nearly two decades as a part-time professional nonfiction writer and editor\, Hoekman earned an advanced certificate in creative writing from the University of Pennsylvania. However\, instead of pursuing a career in traditional writing\, he pivoted to producing micro-text and displaying it on walls. He has become known as the “anti-writer of inexplicable texts” due to his unconventional approach to written communication. We are excited to showcase his unique and thought-provoking art. The exhibit will be in the Port Gallery. \nALL MEDIA ART SHOW  \nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. There are cash prizes and call-for-entries is open to all artists and all mediums.  John Pollard is the juror for this show. John Pollard is the owner and curator of Ada Gallery in Richmond\, VA. Originally from Petersburg\, VA\, John Pollard received his BFA from the University of Virginia and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.  Ada is an artist run gallery exhibiting fine art in Richmond\, VA since 2003. SUMMARY:4th Friday Opening Reception @ Art Works
DESCRIPTION:In February Michael O’Neal\, teacher\, scholar\, and master painter will present New Works in Art Works’ main gallery. Carolyn Pitts will exhibit a new body of work\, The End in Mind\, a colorful and delightful twist on the concept of Memento Mori (Latin for remember your death). And Corinne Schofield will display Folds: Small Images\, intricate color pencil drawings of the many facets of folds. \nDid you know that March 13th – 19th is Virginia Flood Awareness Week? The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) asked us to invite artists to exhibit artwork that captures the devastation and results of floods and high water. DCR will provide educational information on flood awareness \nJoin us on February 25th\, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. for the opening reception. Meet the artists. We have a special treat of poetry readings by two poet laureates and music. Parking is free. The exhibits continue through March 19\, 2022. This event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:August - September Exhibits @ Art Works
DESCRIPTION:Exhibits include:\n________________________________________\nJames River Renderings 2021\nThe James River is Richmond’s defining natural resource. All during the year the James River Advisory Council (JRAC) works to conserve\, preserve\, and promote the river with clean-ups\, holiday boating parades and stewardship awareness. Art Works is only two blocks from the James. We have asked artists to capture images of the river in and around Richmond for the annual James River Days JRAC celebrations. \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery.\n________________________________________\nDeath of an Iceberg by Heidi Nunnally\nBorn and raised in Richmond\, Virginia\, Heidi lived in New York City for 14 years\, witnessing historic moments\, including ticker tape parades down Broadway\, the 2003 blackout\, Hurricane Sandy\, and the visceral reality of 9/11. Back in Virginia\, her photography has focused on nature\, land/seascapes\, and horses. An avid traveler\, she has ventured to the Yukon\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Alaska\, and Austria. This exhibit features images from Greenland and follows the path of an iceberg as the arctic currents carry it into Disko Bay and beyond.\nThis exhibit will be in the Corner Gallery.\n________________________________________\nFaces and City Sights by Cathy Cazares\nCathy Cazares finds and creates beauty from rustic and sometimes\, gritty places\, where some may think no beauty lives. She expresses herself using photography\, transfers\, and pastels while reusing and repurposing materials. One will find social commentary in some of her artwork.\nThis exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery. \n________________________________________ \nAUGUST 2021 ALL MEDIA ART SHOW\nThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes and is open to all artists and all mediums. Matt Lively will be the juror of this exhibit. In addition to the 1st\, 2nd and 3rd place prizes there is also a special prize for artwork depicting dogs. Call for entries is July 26\, 2021 – August 18\, 2021. SUMMARY:September - October Exhibits @ Art Works
DESCRIPTION:Visit Tuesdays – Sundays 12 pm – 6 pm. Exhibits continue through 10/19. Admission is free. \n  \nExhibits include: \nTension by Michelle McGrath \nMcGrath incorporates rough textures and vibrant\, high contrast colors in her paintings and mixed media works. She finds beauty and intrigue in the gnarled roots of a tree; the crumbling plaster on a wall; and the wrinkled\, roughened hands of her grandmother. To explore these types of surfaces\, her materials are distorted by twisting\, ripping\, and pulling the pieces apart. For instance\, canvas is layered and stitched together in an uneven manner\, with knots and lumps added to the distressed surface. She views these distorted\, strained surfaces as different forces in her life that push or pull her in varied directions. Her approach to compositions is playfully and intuitively\, letting them evolve\, during her process. \nThis exhibit will be in the Jane Sandelin Gallery. \nRandom Shots: Line\, Color\, Reflection by Jay Denny \nRichmond plays a regular role in Jay Denny’s creative work—from the ever-changing built environment\, the daily course of the James to the rich experience of community activity. All these contribute to an unending inventory of images. \nDenny says: \nDigital photography has given me many such opportunities. My camera’s small viewfinder has opened new worlds of objects\, shapes and color in many surprising ways. My hope is that the images in this show will allow you to appreciate what I have recorded: some of it familiar\, some foreign. \nThe exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, East. \nRemembering Bin: A Retrospective of Binford Harrell’s artwork. \nThis exhibit is a retrospective of Binford Harrell’s artwork. He was a well-loved\, active member of Art Works Gallery and the community. He painted and created mixed media artwork until his death in 2018. His artwork will be available for purchase in the gallery and online through our shopping website: www.shop4artwork.com. \nThis exhibit will be in the Centre Gallery\, West. \nWithin the Light by Robin Coker \nCoker says: A photographers’ world is essential to the light we take in and capture; so often we fail to see the beauty and signs of the world around us. Within the Light are the images that have captivated my life predominately in nature and other surrounding items in hope that it will be delightful to your likings also.
