SUMMARY:Artist talks: August/September exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the August-September featured artists and their artwork at this informal artist talk.\nArtists include: Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, and Carol Meese.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. Artist books have been the main focus of McCarney’s art practice since 1980. He feels the book is the perfect form to combine his academic background in photography and design with his love for the “corporeality of craft and philosophic possibilities of sculpture.” He states\, “The interpretive space of the book and the interaction of a reader engage my interest in communication as process and form.”\n\nMcCarney’s decision to make artists books is for both practical and formal reasons: they are easy to transport\, access\, and share; their history is socially and culturally saturated; and everyone has some relationship with a book. According to McCarney\, “a book’s materiality and proximity to the reader offer a unique experience for expressing ideas quietly and with purpose.”\n\nMargaret Buchanan’s oil paintings will be displayed in her exhibition\, The Quiet. For Buchanan\, painting is “a place of agitation and excitement mixed with utter calm and joy.” Buchanan responds to composition\, light\, color\, space\, and texture\, and how those elements orchestrate our everyday moments. Her paintings suggest the presence of figures that do not appear in the composition\, referenced by a space where “someone is about to enter or has just left\, the liminal spaces between people\, the aftermath of human activity.” The Quiet articulates a dynamic space\, one that negotiates many states of being to create a sense of place.\n\nA book artist\, painter\, and designer\, Margaret Buchanan divides her working life between painting and her graphic design business\, Buchanan Design. She studied graphic design and painting at Virginia Commonwealth University\, in Richmond\, Virginia\, where she earned a BFA with honors.\n\nThe mystery of unspoken words\, unconscious thoughts\, and unheard prayers emerge in Carol Meese’s exhibition of paintings\, Prayer Books. Meese’s previous career in psychology provides her with an “understanding of what motivates others\,” how to relate on an emotional level\, and of the importance of the subconscious and unconscious helping (her) to communicate on a subliminal level. Saying things that have no words.”\n\nDuring our pandemic time was spent reading and thinking about solitude. Buried in these paintings are words from Theodore Rilke’s poem “Solitude.” and personal prayers. A pentimento effect is created with paint\, plaster\, ink and graphite. Thoughts about solitude are inscribed then obscured as if by smoke or fog or ignored thoughts or speech. The meaning is obscured\, left to the viewer to complete.\n\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, August 27\, 2pm\nExhibition Dates: August 26-September 17\, 2022

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: August/September 2022 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Artspace presents four solo exhibitions which revolve around communication with the viewer. The opening reception\, scheduled for Friday\, August 26\, 2022\, 6-9pm\, features artwork by Scott McCarney\, Margaret Buchanan\, Carol Meese and Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman. Exhibition dates are August 26 – September 17\, 2022.\n\nScott McCarney presents photography and artists books in his exhibition\, Table to Wall. The meaning is obscured\, left to the viewer to complete.\n\nPhotographs by Elisabeth Flynn-Chapman will be on display in her exhibition\, Reflections. Flynn-Chapman is a photographer and art historian. She began taking photographs to illustrate her doctoral thesis on architecture while at Northwestern University. She found she had a natural affinity for composition saying\, “the buildings told me what to shoot.” These photos communicate each building’s presence and their history with the viewer. Her architectural photos became the cornerstone of Flynn-Chapman’s portfolio which expanded to include locations as well as people from around the world.\n\nA long time member of Artspace\, Flynn-Chapman has recently been recognized for her contributions to the gallery with the naming of our multi-purpose space in her honor. The space will be officially inaugurated in her name during the opening reception for this month’s shows at 7pm. The Flynn-Chapman Gallery will feature a variety of exhibitions and events including Spotlight shows for our artist members and exhibitions of work by other area nonprofits and schools. The Flynn-Chapman Gallery will also provide space for art classes and workshops.\n\nA Spotlight exhibition of three Artspace artist members\, Ed Tepper\, Susanne K. Arnold\, and Joel Moses\, will be on view in the Flynn-Chapman Gallery during the August-September exhibition period.\n\nExhibition Dates: August 26-September 17\, 2022\nOpening Reception: Friday\, August 26\, 6-9pm\nInauguration of the Flynn-Chapman Gallery\, 7pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, August 27\, 2pm

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: July/August 2022 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Artspace presents three exhibitions which focus on landscape\, mood and atmosphere. The opening\, scheduled for Friday\, July 22\, 2022\, 6-9pm\, will showcase a group exhibition by Hernan Murno\, Amy Sabrin\, Michelle Simoneau and Rosa Vera\, photography by Karen Commings and Andrew Hoff\, and tapestries by Susan Iverson\nWorlds Apart is a group show by Hernan Murno\, Amy Sabrin\, Michelle Simoneau and Rosa Vera. These four artists create diverse abstract and semi-representational work springing from the same impulse: the landscape\, whether the natural or built environment. Each takes a dramatically different approach to extracting and abstracting the essence of a landscape\, but all hope to provoke an emotional response in the viewer.\nKaren Commings’ and R. Andrew Hoff’s joint exhibition\, Carnival Nights\, is a photographic montage featuring edgy\, moody\, somber or surreal images of county fairs and community festivals in four states taken over the course of three years. Hoff and Commings state\, “The facial expressions\, postures and attitudes show the tedium of carnival life as the evening lingers on. There are multiple stories in these images left to the imagination.”\nIn Observation – Light\, Susan Iverson’s tapestries attempt to capture the strong emotions connected to fleeting moments of ocular pleasure. She is attracted to the transitory nature of atmospheric color\, especially at dawn and dusk\, when magical moments of intense color are experienced and remembered\, but seldom in their fullness.\nDuring the July-August show\, an exhibit of fine art produced by members of the gallery will also be on display\, illustrating the range and diversity of Artspace’s artist membership.\n\nExhibition Dates: July 22 – August 20\, 2022\nOpening Reception: Friday\, July 22\, 6-9pm\nArtist Talks: Saturday\, July 23\, 2pm

SUMMARY:August-October Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Artspace\, a non-profit gallery for the visual and performing arts located in Manchester\, announces three new exhibitions that will be installed and open to the public from September 3 to October 16\, 2020. Exhibitions for August-October feature work by Cristin Millett\, Lisa DeLoria Weinblatt\, and a group exhibition by Artspace Artist Members. \nCristin Millett’s sculpture installation\, Coronal Plane\, “is the culmination of Millett’s research on the anatomical theater at the University of Padua built-in 1594\, the oldest surviving anatomy theater in the world.” This installation includes sections which “dissect” the room in reference to the theater’s architecture. In the center\, Millett has created a dissection table titled\, Transection of the Anatomical Planes. The installation provides “allusions to Catholic confessionals and kneeling benches…invites the viewer to question the contradictory stance between dissections performed for medical education and dissections completed in order to disperse sacred remains for widespread worship.” \nCristin Millett utilizes advances in digital technology\, stone carving\, bronze casting\, and her own research on the history of medicine to cultivate installations that\, in return\, critique and discuss societal issues like reproduction and gender identity. Millett was recently awarded a Fulbright to the University of Western Australia where she is an artist in residence at SymbioticA\, an artistic laboratory dedicated to research and hands-on engagement with the life sciences. She is working towards creating her next piece of artwork titled\, Ex-Utero\, with the goal to create conversations on the socio-cultural impact of the development of embryos in artificial conditions outside the uterus. \nLisa DeLoria Weinblatt’s painting installation\, As We Are\, “is a pictorial essay of contemporary student life\, in real educational settings. Contemporary cross-cultural issues and their emotional attitudes are explored in the shared experience of school lunch.” The SCHOOL LUNCH series of 10 paintings is based on real interactions and people observed by Weinblatt. In this series\, Weinblatt “underlines perceptions which affirm cultural identity\, brings together ideas espousing contemporary social justice\, gender and political concerns while encouraging a belief in the quality of human spirit.” \nLisa DeLoria Weinblatt is a painter living and working in New York City. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Queens College before completing a Masters of Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts. Lisa has received six Artist-In-Residence scholarships. SCHOOL LUNCH\, as well as her other painting series\, A MAN / A WOMAN\, has been shown in over 40 solo shows and more than 200 group exhibitions. Lisa has been awarded with the Grumbacher Gold Medal and a lifetime achievement award from the “Who’s Who of American Women.” \nArtspace Artist Members will present artwork in a variety of media in an exhibition titled “Needs and Wants.”\nAbout Artspace: Artspace is an artist-run gallery and performance space committed to showing innovative work by established and emerging artists. Since 1988\, Artspace has been an intrinsic part of the visual and performing arts community of Richmond\, Virginia. \nGallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from 12-4 p.m. or by appointment. Please contact the gallery administrator at artspaceorg@gmail.com\, or phone the gallery at 804-232-6464 for additional information. The gallery is located at 31 E. 3rd St. in Richmond\, Virginia 23224\, and online at www.artspacegallery.org. Mailing address: Zero E. 4th St.\, Richmond\, VA 23224.

SUMMARY:January/February 2020 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:To kick off the 2020 exhibition season at artspace Gallery in Manchester\, we chose four Virginia artists to show their work: painters\, Duane Cregger (Marion\, VA) and Sean McClain (Richmond\, VA)\, ceramicist\, Anna Freeman (Virginia Beach\, VA)\, and installation artist\, Lou Haney (Charlottesville\, VA). A group exhibition of work by Artspace Artist Members will also be on view. Work will be on display until February 23\, 2020. A closing talk by the artists will take place on Sunday\, February 23\, 2020 beginning at 2:00 p.m. \nAll four featured artists\, though exploring different topics\, respond to a particular challenge emanating from within or infiltrating from outside themselves. Duane Cregger\, (Work2020)\, searches for tranquility represented by his heavily layered painting process. Anna Freeman’s (Drought and Deluge)\, presents environmental crisis in the structure and imagery of her ceramic vases and satellite like views of drought on parched tiles. Sean McClain (Peggy Sue Ate Mushrooms) steps up to the plate in defiance of deferred ambition\, and Lou Haney’s installation (Little Wonders) attends to the manipulation of perception. In each gallery the viewer is provided with much to consider and perhaps much to ponder on our own attempts at resolution of life’s challenges. \nMore Info \nDuane Cregger – Work2020\, Main Gallery\nFeatures 14 paintings\, large and small\, in oil and mixed media. Cregger describes these works as a “moody search for tranquility” where hints can be found of gestural marks and busy compositions layered beneath atmospheric\, color subdued surfaces. \nAnna Freeman – Drought and Deluge\, Helena Davis Gallery\nPresenting sculptural vessels and tiles in porcelain and stoneware\, Freeman’s work\, based on micro and macro imagery\, “explores ecological concepts in cycles of drought and excess” and the significance of their impact. \nSean McClain – Peggy Sue Ate Mushrooms\, Frable Gallery\nPortraying the antithesis of “scenic” Richmond\, McClain’s acrylic paintings are close observations of color and the effects of light on humble subjects and their environs. These snippets: an overgrown alley\, rusting VW\, a dumpster\, unmanicured lots\, vintage signage and time stamped houses\, have acquired the stylistic description of “realist Americana but kind of trippy”. \nLou Haney – Little Wonder\, smallspace Gallery\nShowing a site specific\, mixed media installation inspired by nostalgia for vintage fabric and a 1970’s color palette. Haney uses traditional painting techniques and a variety of other found and fabricated elements to transform the texture\, form and surface of this small interior space.

SUMMARY:Closing Artist Talks for September/October Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Richmond\, VA – A closing talk by the artists will take place on Sunday\, October 20\, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. This event will be Free and Open to the Public\, featuring a mixed media installation of large scale work by Baltimore artist Kim Rice\, abstract oil paintings by Virginia artist Kathleen Craig\, a painting and installation collection by Baltimore artist Giulia Piera Livi\, 1\,461 oil pastel on paper drawings by St. Louis artist Martin Brief\, and a group exhibition of work by artspace Artist Members\, entitled Decisions\, Decisions. Exhibition dates are September 27 – October 20\, 2019. \nPresented in the Main Gallery is Kim Rice’s mixed media installation\, Inheritance. Using common materials\, Rice creates large-scale works as a meditation on institutional racism and the policies that continue to affect American society today. Materials found around her home\, such as academic references\, photographs\, redlining maps\, court documents\, and furniture create a space where both the past and present reside. Her installations dismantle and reconstruct the dissonance we experience in our engagement with truth. Kim earned her BFA in Sculpture and MFA in Printmaking from the University of Oklahoma. Her work has been shown throughout the country including the Alexandria Museum of Art\, the Fred Jones Museum of Art\, the Northern Illinois Art Museum\, the Delaware Museum of Art\, the 22ndNo Dead Artists at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery\, and Prospect.4 Satellite. She has received multiple awards\, including the McNeese Grant for Socially Engaged Practice. Born in Kentucky\, raised in California\, educated in Oklahoma\, loved in New Orleans and now home in Baltimore\, Kim’s work is influenced by her two children and the pile of books by her bed. \nFeatured in the Helena Davis Gallery is Abstract Imagery\, oil paintings by Kathleen Craig. Kathleen says\, “Today\, I would like to develop my work in two directions – complexity and darkness – without losing sight of what I am already doing.” She loves the way each painting suggests not only a new direction\, but also seems to tell her to do it better next time. Her process starts with some loose\, expressive drawing keeping the basic tenets of composition in mind. When time allows\, she tries to reach a resolution of the whole painting in one go\, and then she revises and revises. Craig originally earned a living working as an editor. She didn’t get started as an artist until finally being persuaded to try a drawing class at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She soon found herself enamoured with all aspects of the art world. Shortly after moving to Virginia\, she swapped out her day job in order to dedicate herself to the practice and her children. Now\, with her children grown\, she can spend all her free time in her studio. \nIn the Frable Gallery\, Giulia Piera Livi presents Come Sit\, a painting & installation collection. Livi’s work focuses on the acute and the polite\, the domestic and the utilitarian. She works to understand how we find art objects to be aesthetically pleasing\, and how we choose to live among them. She interposes objects of the everyday to distort our sense of space\, explore our ability to inhabit rooms\, and merge the dreamlike with the rigid. Her geometric objects and paintings focus on materiality to investigate light\, form\, and the weirdly functional. Giulia earned a BFA from Penn State University and an MFA from the Mount Royal School at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). She has exhibited both nationally and internationally with recent solo shows at 13|U Art Windows\, VAE Gallery\, Arlington Arts Center\, and School 33 Art Center’s Project Space. Livi received an Individual Artist Grant from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2019 and the Trawick Young Artist Prize from the Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards in 2017. Currently\, she is a Gallery Manager at C. Grimaldis and an Adjunct Professor at MICA. Originally from Philadelphia\, she now lives and works in Baltimore. \nsmallspace Gallery features Hope (2017–2019)\, 1\,461 oil pastel on paper drawings by Martin Brief. Brief defines hope as “a thought process that removes us from this moment and clouds our ability to clearly see what is right in front of us.” These drawings allude to the idea that hope is accepting and appreciating the unknown future while still acting in the present. Each piece begins as a carefully executed drawing of the word “hope”. It is then smudged until the word is transformed. By physically reworking the oil pastel\, the drawing remains materially the same but visually different. Martin’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including exhibitions in New York\, Paris\, Zurich\, Washington\, D.C.\, Philadelphia\, Chicago\, and St. Louis. He also has work in several public collections\, including the Joan Flasch Artist Book Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago\, Center for Creative Photography in Tucson\, Arizona\, and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in Honolulu\, Hawaii. He recently received fellowships from the Howard Foundation and the MacDowell Colony. Brief was born and raised in Chicago and he currently lives and works in St. Louis where he is an Associate Professor at Saint Louis University. \nThe Suzanne Foley Gallery will show Decisions\, Decisions\, works in all media by artspace Artist Members. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Please contact the gallery administrator at artspaceorg@gmail.com\, or phone the gallery at 804-232-6464 for additional information.
