SUMMARY:The World Within: Magali Wilensky’s Fabric Art Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 6th – Saturday\, February 10th\, 2024 Opening reception: Thursday\, February 8th\, 6:00 – 8:00pm Gallery hours: Tuesday Through Saturday 12pm-6pm \nAtlantic Gallery is excited to present a captivating solo exhibition featuring the remarkable fabric artist\, Magali Wilensky. Magali’s artistic process is a dual journey\, seamlessly merging inner meditation with outward projection. She handles fabric with delicate precision\, attuning her senses to the tactile sensations\, the precise cut of scissors\, and the texture of glue on her hands. \nAs Magali immerses herself in introspective meditation and hands-on creation\, life forms emerge from the fabric. Her art breathes life into cells\, plants\, and organs\, as she harnesses the lines\, shapes\, and colors of the fabric to craft not just artworks\, but living organisms that interconnect with each other. \n\n\n\n\nThis evocative artistic voyage is an invitation to explore the unseen dimensions of existence\, a testament to the unity that weaves through all life forms\, and an opportunity to experience the profound beauty that emanates from the simplicity of fabric. \nMagali Wilensky’s art is a revelation\, an introspection\, and a celebration of life’s hidden layers. Her upcoming exhibition promises to be a profound artistic experience that invites viewers to delve into the world within. Additionally\, Magali will immerse viewers in fabric installations\, enhancing the sensory exploration at the heart of her artistic vision. \nInstagram: \nhttps://www.instagram.com/magaliwilensky_workhttps:// www.instagram.com/lifeandmatter/

SUMMARY:Trash: Drawings and Paintings by Barbara Griffiths
DESCRIPTION:TRASH\nDrawings and Paintings\nBarbara Griffiths \nAtlantic Gallery\, New York City\nNovember 7-25\, 2023 \nOpening Reception:\nThursday November 9\, 6-8 pm \nDuring the pandemic\, Griffiths began to draw the uncollected trash piling up on the streets. When the homeless arrived\, she was faced with the ethical dilemma of whether they should be included in the drawings. Now that we’re more aware of human rights\, should real people\, especially the disadvantaged\, be treated as aesthetic objects? These works provoke cognitive dissonance by presenting two highly charged subjects\, waste and homelessness\, without any emotional message. \nGriffiths’ subject became the gap between the artist and the viewer\, the artwork and the interpretations the viewer might take from it. \nBarbara Griffiths is an English artist who trained at The Slade School in London. She exhibited at The Lasson Gallery in London\, then moved to Connecticut in 1995\, where she made work about human nature\, identity\, and religion. Griffiths exhibited at The Silvermine Guild\, Katonah Museum\, Long Island Museum\, The Greenwich Arts Center\, and The University of Connecticut. To accompany an exhibition of Bible illustrations at The Fairfield Arts Center\, Griffiths staged public debates with a Priest and a Rabbi; these questioned the existence of God. Her satirical Bible Stories for Children won praise from Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris and was serialized in Skeptic Magazine\, U.K. \nFour years ago Griffiths moved to Brooklyn. Her self-portrait is featured on the NYAC ‘Curated Shows’ page\, and her work was included in the online exhibits Lost & Found\, and City Life; also in the annual Connections exhibitions and Causality at The Atlantic Gallery\, Art Over Time at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists’ Gallery\, and Women Celebrate Women at El Barrio Art space.

SUMMARY:Joan Walton: Double Vision
DESCRIPTION:October 17 – November 4\, 2023 \nReception: Thursday\, October 19\, 6 to 8pm\nArtist Talk/ Meet the Artist: Saturday\, October 28\, 2pm \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce DOUBLE VISION\, an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and photography presenting an artist’s view of the world around her in two distinct disciplines and mediums. \nThe exhibition juxtaposes the tactile qualities and spatial experience of hand-built clay vessels with the two-dimensional plane of the photograph\, where the viewer looks through the flat surface into a perceived space. Walton has pushed through the constraints of her sculptural work to search for visual meaning\, contemplating this Georgia O’Keeffe quote\, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” \n\n\n\n\nThis new way of working deepens her observations and explores how one artist finds meaning in what she sees using different sets of tools. All of the photographic images were made within a half-mile radius of her studio in Montauk\, NY\, allowing a timely interchange between working with clay and her camera. \nWriting about Walton’s sculptures\, Pat Rogers stated in the Hamptons ArtHub: “It’s difficult to know where to look first: the colorful interiors that gleam or the aggressively textural exteriors in nuanced monotones found in Joan Walton’s fine art ceramics. Moving between the two doesn’t seem to solve the dilemma as each distinct area commands time and attention. Taken together\, the works present an unusual pairing that contributes to a unique and intriguing whole. \nJoan Walton received her BFA with honors from Pratt Institute\, majoring in photography. She began working in clay after a career in art direction and photo editing. Her award-winning ceramic work has been widely exhibited in the U.S.\, and as a visiting artist in China and Korea.

SUMMARY:Susan Rostow: Hello from Here
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a solo exhibition of new works by Susan Rostow. Hello from Here is Rostow’s visual response to the American singer/songwriter John Prine’s song\, Hello in There. While Prine’s words deal with thoughts of isolation on growing old\, Rostow sheds new light on aging\, beauty\, grotesque\, and satire. Through printmaking\, sculpture\, wall reliefs\, and animation\, Rostow shares her feelings on the myths of beauty standards and aging uncomfortably. \nSusan Rostow splits her time between living in New York City and rural upstate New York. Her work combines her fascination with the clamor of crowds of people in the city with the solitude found in the rich countryside landscapes. \nThis is Rostow’s second solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery. Her work has also been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in New York City and throughout the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. She has earned a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in printmaking\, drawing and book arts and a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant. Rostow’s prints and sculptural books are in public and private collections including the Allan Chasanoff Bookwork Collection\, Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress\, National Print Archives\, etc. \nSusan Rostow’s website: www.susanrostow.com and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/susanrostow/ \nAtlantic Gallery • 548 West 28th Street • Suite 540 • New York\, NY 10001 • Tel. 212.219.3183

Although each artist strives to craft their own tales\, The work shares a common thread through- out the exhibition to weave a larger narrative. \nAmong the group of artists are former roommates and classmates. Others were brought together by chance encounters or through social media. Some have previously worked together\, and others collaborated for the first time. Together\, they created a show that’s both eclectic and cohesive. SUMMARY:Hindsight: The Paintings of Roni Sherman Ramos
DESCRIPTION:May 9th – May 27th\,2023\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, May 11th\, 5 – 8 PM \nAtlantic Gallery is proud to announce the fifth solo show by Roni Sherman Ramos who has been exhibiting here over the course of eight years. \n\nIn these 51 small oil paintings a story is told about looking back in time. The title\, “Hindsight”\, refers to that fuller understanding of the sense of environment and state of mind when recalling a place or an event.Ramos’ paintings are not limited to a literal depiction of time and place; they are rather a mind’s eye view of having been there. \nOne painting\, “Barn”\, draws us to a pasture where a building simply sits\, a familiar scene. In another\, a warm beachy day evokes memories of Puerto Rico vacations. In contrast\, a number of Ramos’ images serve to provoke the imagination: abstract forms conjure serene\, dreamy days\, weightless colors float\, nighttime moodiness plays in opposition to images of vivid brightness. \nTo be sure\, take all the time you need to explore the many facets of “Hindsight”. \nIn the last two years\, I discovered a different perspective from working small. I became hyperaware of texture and materials\, adding marble dust and sand and thereby creating a rich\, nearly three- dimensional surface. \nIn contrast to larger scale work\, small panels make for quicker resolutions of compositional problems\, especially in the more immediate acts of taking away and building back – allowing traces of “history” to show through. Another kind of “hindsight”. These small works have both delighted and confounded me along the way. \n-Roni Sherman Ramos \n\n

SUMMARY:EOMETRIC ABSTRACTIONS THE ARTWORK OF CHUCK FISCHER
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 18 – Saturday May 6th\, 2023\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, April 20th\, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. \nAtlantic Gallery announces the opening of a solo exhibition of new works by mixed media artist Chuck Fischer. Fischer’s geometric abstract constructions break the plane of two-dimensional painting and are composed of colored\, textured\, and multi-layered elements made from common materials such as wood\, copper\, and aluminum. \nHe creates visual complexity by varying the depth\, color\, and texture of each piece to draw the viewer into the work. He never sketches before starting a new piece but trusts his intuition and the materials at hand to guide him as he creates works of spatial balance and harmony. The show features Fischer’s most recent work from 2019-2023. His work was recently featured in the fine art magazines\, Artists Magazine\, and Woven Tale Press. \nEarlier in his career\, Fischer created 9 pop-up books including Great American Houses and Gardens (Rizzoli/Universe) and Christmas in New York (Little\, Brown & Co.). His designs are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum and Museum of American History\, and in the Artist Book section of the Library of Congress \nwww.chuckfischerstudio.com

SUMMARY:Jeff Shapiro and Jonathan Grengs FROZEN IN TIME

A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday\, December 8th\, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. \nFROZEN IN TIME explores the forces shaping our world through recorded moments of geologic change that are beautiful and mysterious and add to our collective appreciation of how we are connected to this process. Jeff Shapiro’s work responds to the artistic elements that exist in nature; texture\, form\, color\, and composition\, as well as the different stages of transformation that occurs with water; flowing ice\, running water\, lagoons. His work has been exhibited internationally in: Germany\, France\, Italy\, Australia\, Switzerland\, Canada\, England\, and Japan. SUMMARY:BROTHERS & SISTERS\, DEAR MUTANTS A Show of Works by Evelyne Huet
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is proud to announce the opening of Brothers & Sisters\, Dear Mutants\, an exhibition of 19 paintings\, on view from Tuesday\, November 8th through Saturday\, November 26th\, 2022. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday\, November 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nEvelyne Huet is a French artist who lives and works in Paris. SUMMARY:The Magicians: Carole d’Inverno & Susan Rostow
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Gallery is proud to present The Magicians\, a collaborative exhibition\n\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 29\, 6 PM-8 PM\nInstagram Live Feed and Walkthrough: Tuesday\, October 4\, 6 PM www.instagram.com/susanrostow\nLive Performance: with Bill Frisell (Guitar)\, and Luke Bergman (Bass). Limited seating. Friday\, October 7. Doors open 6 PM\, Performance 6:45 PM to 7:30 PM. RSVP ONLY at musicthemagician@gmail.com\nArtists Talk at the Gallery and on Zoom: Thursday\, October 13\, 6-7 PM\nRSVP for the zoom link at zoomthemagicians@gmail.com\nThe Atlantic Gallery is proud to present The Magicians\, a collaborative exhibition by painter Carole d’Inverno\, and printmaker-sculptor Susan Rostow. Composer and guitarist Bill Frisell provides the soundtrack for a video by Rostow.\nCircus\, humor and magic tricks are favorite subjects for both artists. For Rostow\, she attributes her propensity to jokes and verbal puns to her grandfather Poppy\, a Russian-Jewish immigrant who hailed from Odessa\, the “Capital of Humor.’ For d’Inverno\, it’s her memories of the traveling circus passing through her Italian village: the one very old and mangy lion\, the ripped fishnets of the aerialists\, and the mismatched shoes of the clowns.\n\nRostow presents a series of anthropomorphic sculptures made by gluing together layers upon layers of her prints on paper. The pieces are then toned with pigments\, and sand. The added elements of found materials\, plastics\, and metal wires\, make the work familiar yet otherworldly. The sculptures range from 3 inches to a monumental 6 feet tall called Alter Kocker. The visual relationships between the pieces creates stories\, puns\, intrigue\, and laughter.\nd’Inverno presents a large 6.7 x 12-foot painting called Abracadabra. This semi- abstract piece invites the viewer into a world evocative of magic tricks\, and marionettes. On view also is Shenanigans\, a series of small works on paper\, in watercolors\, pencils and vinyl emulsions. These chromatic pieces are based on the frenetic activities of the circus.\n\nThe artists are also presenting a collaborative installation\, entitled The Magicians. Here the viewer is presented with d’Inverno’s lines extending outwards and creating a bridge for Rostow’s anthropomorphic figurations to travel to and from the painting. On view also: The Magicians\, an animation by Rostow with a soundtrack by composer Bill Frisell. In it\, the artists’ work interacts\, separate\, and regroup\, to the mysterious sounds of Frisell’s music.

SUMMARY:A Solo Exhibition by Jim Ebersole: HERE AND THERE
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of HERE AND THERE\, an exhibition of plein air and studio paintings by Jim Ebersole\, on view from Tuesday\, April 26 through Saturday\, May 7\, 2022. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday\, April 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nHERE AND THERE is a selection of paintings representing years of exploration of both\nrural and urban areas. The work is inspired by several traditions in American and European painting including The Hudson River School\, Ashcan School\, Impressionism and others. It doesn’t seek to record topography literally but to evoke spiritual and psychological states of being. \nDirect study from nature\, that is\, plein air painting and drawing has been Ebersole’s constant practice in many locations such as Brookyn\, The White Mountains\, Ireland etc. These studies become the reference material for work in the studio. Photo reference is not used\, forcing the artist to rely on memory and imagination to fill in gaps and avoid a mechanical look.

SUMMARY:GEMINI: A Solo Exhibition by Bryant Small
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to present GEMINI\, a solo exhibition of Alcohol Ink Paintings by Bryant Small.   The bold and luminescent paintings\, painted on Yupo Paper\, are created with the unpredictable high pigmented dyes and float on the surface of the recycled and sustainable synthetic paper. \n“Gemini is the visualization of duality – soft and hard\, vibrant and dark\, bold but sensitive.  It’s really a celebration…showing the ability to be more than one thing.  Something can be bold and bring comfort at the same time\,” the artist says of the collection.  He adds “..this is the opportunity for people to get up close with the work and be pulled into color and pattern and texture. Oh! And being a Gemini…the good and bad side is also a large part of this!” \nVibrant tones and powerful movement and varying techniques come to life in these 4 feet by 6 feet (and larger) paintings. \n“Experimentation meets Imagination and Exploration” – each painting begins with a color concept and from there\, a true experiment derived of imagination and exploring what alcohol ink does organically or can be manipulated to do happens. Alcohol Inks are highly pigmented\, fast drying dyes that are activated to move\, bloom and blend when they interact with 91% rubbing alcohol. Every single piece is a unique experience because the medium overall doesn’t truly allow for me to recreate a piece exactly in the same way.  In my creating\, I’m always experimenting and exploring the happy mistakes and colorful victories in my creative process.”

SUMMARY:Atlantic Gallery Presents: Sense of Place by Susan Rostow
DESCRIPTION:Susan Rostow’s sculptures resemble archeological artifacts with biomorphic traits\, prompting us to probe into their origin and meaning. Peppered throughout the gallery space\, the visceral and mysterious smaller scale sculptures titled Naiads\, allude to the nymphs from Greek mythology who protect and reside over rivers and marshes. In the background along the walls these hybrid creatures form a comical procession. Going about their business\, each projects a distinct gesture–a bulbous loner in orange hues by a tall pale figure with a protruding belly\, a pair pausing to engage in a vivid conversation or perhaps an argument. In the front\, duos or extended groups of mixed-scale sculptures hint at Rostow’s background as a prolific book artist. Here the sculptures reference spliced or carved book spines in myriad playful ways. They metamorphize into volumes of organic forms resembling abstracted human figures\, imaginary animals\, or both–all painted with rich colors ranging from earth tones to reds and vibrant yellows to algae greens—evoking natural matter. \nSusan Rostow is a Brooklyn-based multi-media artist. Her sculptural works remind us how to dream and reimagine our world: past\, present\, and future. Her recent work has been influenced by her Research Residencies at the New York Academy of Medicine and the New York Historical Society\, a collaborative project with CENTRAL BOOKING. Her work has earned a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship\, and a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Susan’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. Her work is in public and private collections including the Allan Chasanoff Bookwork Collection\, Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress\, National Print Archives.

SUMMARY:DREAMSCAPES by Carol Crawford
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to present DREAMSCAPES\, a solo exhibition of life-sized figurative drawings by Carol Crawford. The images of refugees in transit\, were created by merging / blending enlarged archival photographs in black and white with charcoal and pastel drawings. \n“The theme”\, the artist explains in her detailed catalog\, “is one I’ve been exploring and researching since 2015.”  She adds that “..the examples I’ve chosen span nearly two centuries of history\, and at least three continents…yet represent a fraction of the displaced people from around the world seeking safety and fleeing persecution.  This subject is difficult to contemplate; it is even harder to visualize and understand.” \nColor in these works is sparing\, the images as stark as their subject-matter; the viewer is compelled to look directly into their eyes and\, as the artist intended\, must relate to their humanity. \nThese powerful and compelling drawings are hung directly on the gallery walls unframed; the largest\, entitled HOLOCAUST\, is 7 feet in high and 12 feet wide. Each portrays a different group of people trekking toward safety and freedom. \nThese studies of refugees stem from the artist’s continued research examining the legacy of their communities; their strength and resilience shine through in the portrayals. \nThe artist’s Dreamscapes series fulfills a goal the artist has long cherished: combining her documentary photographic work with her drawing. This latest body of work was funded in part by a New Work grant from The Queens Council on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Stepping Out! New Drawings & Sculptures by Jeff Miller
DESCRIPTION:ATLANTIC GALLERY is pleased to presents STEPPING OUT! New Drawings & Sculpture by JEFF MILLER. \nRendered in white charcoal pencil on papers of various colors\, JEFF MILLER’s fluidly elegant figure drawings – male nudes\, in the main – represent a Covid-era departure from JEFF MILLER’s customary practice.  No longer able to draw the live model\, the artist was obliged to step out of the world of 3 dimensions and rely on the 2-dimensional world of photography\, a resort the artist would previously have strictly shunned. JEFF MILLER says: “To my surprise\, this loss was also a gain. Online\, there is an endless supply of highly inspiring images\, most notable of dancers caught — often literally — in mid-flight\, and otherwise in beautifully complicated attitudes that a model (even a dancer!) could never hold in real life.” \nThe fruits of JEFF MILLER’s house-bound excursions have been choreographed on the walls of ATLANTIC GALLERY for this show. \nAs a counterweight to the line drawings in view\, STEPPING OUT! Includes sculptural works which\, while contrastingly realistic in treatment\, nevertheless evince some surprising stylistic continuities with the artist’s graphic productions. \n—- \nJEFF MILLER is a New York-based figurative artist. More of his work can be seen at www.jeffmillerdrawings.com\, on Instagram @jeff.graphos.miller and in Issue 11 of JuturnaMagazine\, which is wholly devoted to his work.

SUMMARY:Atlantic Gallery Presents: The Carnival by Sarah Jacobs
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, August 26th 6pm – 8pm. \nAtlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of The Carnival\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Pittsburgh artist Sarah Jacobs. \nJacobs grew up in a small Pennsylvania town that annually hosted a traveling carnival for one week every August which her mother sarcastically called the social and cultural event of the season. For the children\, though\, it was exactly that. After a few months of not seeing classmates\, they reunited for heady evenings of deep-fried foods\, rickety carnival rides that flipped them in every direction\, dart games\, and the latest gossip. This series consists of oil portraits of the artist’s friends and family surrounded by\, overlapped by\, and wearing multi-media patterns containing symbols and meanings related to who they are and what they love. Each in their own particular happy environment\, these characters gather together at Atlantic Gallery for just one week for The Carnival.
