DESCRIPTION:LICA@ATLANTIC 2023\, is a group exhibition featuring the works of 35 artists\, all of whom are members of Long Island City Artists\, Inc. This diverse showcase includes painting\, sculpture\, graphics and installation\, and is on view from March 28 to April 15\, 2023\, at Atlantic Gallery\, 548 West 28 Street\, suite 540\, in the Landmark Arts Building in Chelsea\, Manhattan\, NY 10001.    \nA reception for the artists will be held on Thursday\, March 30\, from 6-8:00 pm.  An informal Meet-the-Artists Event is planned: the participating artists will introduce themselves to visitors and discuss their works and the growing art scene in Long Island City. Atlantic Gallery Hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays 12-6 pm; with extended hours on Thursdays 6-8:00 pm. \nIn addition\, a continuous digital slide show will provide glimpses into the studios of the show participants. All events are free and open to the public. \nLICArtists\, Inc.\, and Atlantic Gallery have much in common: both are artist-run\, and share a mission of supporting the creative freedom and careers of their independent artist-members.  LICArtists\, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) arts advocacy organization\, founded in1985. It launched the Annual Open Studios tradition in Queens in 1985\, and continues in service to the artists and communities of Queens and New York City with an extensive program of exhibitions\, workshops\, and performances in its new headquarters at the Factory Gallery\, 30-30 47th Avenue in Long Island City\, Its history\, activities and the works of its more than 200 members can be seen on Its website\,  www.licartists.org \nAtlantic Gallery was founded in 1974 in Brooklyn as an artists’ cooperative. DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of New Work\, Sally Brody’s latest solo exhibition on view from Tuesday\, March 7th through Saturday\, March 25th\, 2023. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday\, March 9th\, from 5 to 8 PM. \nAcross seven decades of painting\, the enigma of nature has been Sally Brody’s inexhaustible subject. In the current show of still lives at the Atlantic Gallery\, the artist distills her work in radiant blocks of interlocking\, consummately balanced color with the elusive outlines of leaves and flowers providing the essential animating spark. \nSally Brody studied painting at Smith College\, the Art Students League\, the Brooklyn Museum and the Pratt Graphic Center.  She has many solo shows at the Atlantic Gallery. SUMMARY:Jeff Shapiro and Jonathan Grengs FROZEN IN TIME
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of FROZEN IN TIME\, an exhibition of selected ceramic sculptures by Jeff Shapiro and Jonathan Grengs\, on view from Tuesday\, December 6th through Saturday\, December 17th\, 2022. A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday\, December 8th\, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. \nFROZEN IN TIME explores the forces shaping our world through recorded moments of geologic change that are beautiful and mysterious and add to our collective appreciation of how we are connected to this process. Jeff Shapiro’s work responds to the artistic elements that exist in nature; texture\, form\, color\, and composition\, as well as the different stages of transformation that occurs with water; flowing ice\, running water\, lagoons. Jonathan Grengs examines a broader anthropological view with sculptures that reference contemporary consumer materials suspended into an archeological context reminding us of the ephemerality of life and existence. \nJeff Shapiro studied ceramic arts while living in Japan for 9 years from 1973-1981. His work has been exhibited internationally in: Germany\, France\, Italy\, Australia\, Switzerland\, Canada\, England\, and Japan. His work can be found in numerous Museum collections including: The Carlo Zauli Museum\, Faenza\, Italy\, The Massachusetts Museum of Fine Art\, Boston MA\, The Brooklyn Museum\, Brooklyn\, NY\, The Everson Museum\, Syracuse\, NY\, The Fuller Museum\, Brockton\, MA. \nJonathan Grengs studied ceramics while obtaining an Art Education degree in 2010 at Carlow University. He taught ceramic classes at Carlow for 6 years until he was accepted into the MFA program at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2019. She also attended the Grande Chaumière atelier in Montparnasse\, where she studied under the painter Artozoul. In 2019\, Huet was made a full member of the Salon d’Automne. She regularly shows in solo and group exhibitions around the world. \nHuet paints on a touch screen\, with her finger and without a stylus\, letting her creations come to her with nothing decided in advance. A\nreception for the artist will be held on Thursday\,\nOctober 20\, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. \nCLOSE ENCOUNTERS explores the human figure as a\ncatalyst for expressing the complexity of our\nrelationships with each other and with the world around\nus. The maxim that “a picture is worth a thousand words”\ncoalesces on the canvases\, which tell their stories\nthrough the power of suggestion and body language.\nRobert Forte’s paintings are held by numerous private\ncollectors and are shown regularly at Atlantic Gallery\nand at the Meeting House Gallery in New Marlborough\,\nMassachusetts. Forte’s work is currently on view in the September issue of The American Art Collector.\nForte studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League and Spring Studio. He also attended\nclasses at the School of Visual Arts\, and participated in a workshop with Philip Pearlstein at the National\nAcademy School of Fine Arts. Composer and guitarist Bill Frisell provides the soundtrack for a video by Rostow.\nCircus\, humor and magic tricks are favorite subjects for both artists. For Rostow\, she attributes her propensity to jokes and verbal puns to her grandfather Poppy\, a Russian-Jewish immigrant who hailed from Odessa\, the “Capital of Humor.’ For d’Inverno\, it’s her memories of the traveling circus passing through her Italian village: the one very old and mangy lion\, the ripped fishnets of the aerialists\, and the mismatched shoes of the clowns.\n\nRostow presents a series of anthropomorphic sculptures made by gluing together layers upon layers of her prints on paper. The pieces are then toned with pigments\, and sand. The added elements of found materials\, plastics\, and metal wires\, make the work familiar yet otherworldly. The sculptures range from 3 inches to a monumental 6 feet tall called Alter Kocker. The visual relationships between the pieces creates stories\, puns\, intrigue\, and laughter.\nd’Inverno presents a large 6.7 x 12-foot painting called Abracadabra. This semi- abstract piece invites the viewer into a world evocative of magic tricks\, and marionettes. On view also is Shenanigans\, a series of small works on paper\, in watercolors\, pencils and vinyl emulsions. These chromatic pieces are based on the frenetic activities of the circus.\n\nThe artists are also presenting a collaborative installation\, entitled The Magicians. Here the viewer is presented with d’Inverno’s lines extending outwards and creating a bridge for Rostow’s anthropomorphic figurations to travel to and from the painting. On view also: The Magicians\, an animation by Rostow with a soundtrack by composer Bill Frisell. In it\, the artists’ work interacts\, separate\, and regroup\, to the mysterious sounds of Frisell’s music.

DESCRIPTION:A juried Group Show with Grand Prize for two artists: a Show at Atlantic Gallery in NYC’s Chelsea art district. \n“GeoLogic” is the theme for this exhibition of clay-based work at Atlantic Gallery in New York’s bustling Chelsea district. Selected works will explore aesthetic\, narrative\, political\, structural\, or personal points of view related to the exhibition title. Potters and sculptors whose work explores issues regarding Geology\, Geometry\, Geography\, Geohumanism\, Geomorphology\, and/or all things Earth-related are strongly encouraged to apply. Visual artists who express ideas through functional or sculptural modes are invited to submit work. Works intended for the wall\, ie; tilework\, mosaics\, and installations are also encouraged. Multimedia works which are at least 80% ceramic are welcomed. The juror\, Bruce Dehnert\, will award two artists a grand prize of a week-long show at Atlantic Gallery. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday\, April 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nHERE AND THERE is a selection of paintings representing years of exploration of both\nrural and urban areas. The work is inspired by several traditions in American and European painting including The Hudson River School\, Ashcan School\, Impressionism and others. It doesn’t seek to record topography literally but to evoke spiritual and psychological states of being. \nDirect study from nature\, that is\, plein air painting and drawing has been Ebersole’s constant practice in many locations such as Brookyn\, The White Mountains\, Ireland etc. These studies become the reference material for work in the studio. Photo reference is not used\, forcing the artist to rely on memory and imagination to fill in gaps and avoid a mechanical look.

SUMMARY:Atlantic Gallery Presents: Sense of Place by Susan Rostow
DESCRIPTION:Susan Rostow’s sculptures resemble archeological artifacts with biomorphic traits\, prompting us to probe into their origin and meaning. Peppered throughout the gallery space\, the visceral and mysterious smaller scale sculptures titled Naiads\, allude to the nymphs from Greek mythology who protect and reside over rivers and marshes. In the background along the walls these hybrid creatures form a comical procession. Going about their business\, each projects a distinct gesture–a bulbous loner in orange hues by a tall pale figure with a protruding belly\, a pair pausing to engage in a vivid conversation or perhaps an argument. In the front\, duos or extended groups of mixed-scale sculptures hint at Rostow’s background as a prolific book artist. Here the sculptures reference spliced or carved book spines in myriad playful ways. They metamorphize into volumes of organic forms resembling abstracted human figures\, imaginary animals\, or both–all painted with rich colors ranging from earth tones to reds and vibrant yellows to algae greens—evoking natural matter. \nSusan Rostow is a Brooklyn-based multi-media artist. Her sculptural works remind us how to dream and reimagine our world: past\, present\, and future. Her recent work has been influenced by her Research Residencies at the New York Academy of Medicine and the New York Historical Society\, a collaborative project with CENTRAL BOOKING. Her work has earned a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship\, and a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Susan’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States\, Europe\, Peru\, Korea\, and Japan. Her work is in public and private collections including the Allan Chasanoff Bookwork Collection\, Yale University Art Gallery and the Library of Congress\, National Print Archives.

SUMMARY:DREAMSCAPES by Carol Crawford
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Gallery is pleased to present DREAMSCAPES\, a solo exhibition of life-sized figurative drawings by Carol Crawford. The images of refugees in transit\, were created by merging / blending enlarged archival photographs in black and white with charcoal and pastel drawings. \n“The theme”\, the artist explains in her detailed catalog\, “is one I’ve been exploring and researching since 2015.”  She adds that “..the examples I’ve chosen span nearly two centuries of history\, and at least three continents…yet represent a fraction of the displaced people from around the world seeking safety and fleeing persecution.  This subject is difficult to contemplate; it is even harder to visualize and understand.” \nColor in these works is sparing\, the images as stark as their subject-matter; the viewer is compelled to look directly into their eyes and\, as the artist intended\, must relate to their humanity. \nThese powerful and compelling drawings are hung directly on the gallery walls unframed; the largest\, entitled HOLOCAUST\, is 7 feet in high and 12 feet wide. Each portrays a different group of people trekking toward safety and freedom. \nThese studies of refugees stem from the artist’s continued research examining the legacy of their communities; their strength and resilience shine through in the portrayals. \nThe artist’s Dreamscapes series fulfills a goal the artist has long cherished: combining her documentary photographic work with her drawing. This latest body of work was funded in part by a New Work grant from The Queens Council on the Arts.

New Drawings & Sculpture by JEFF MILLER. \nRendered in white charcoal pencil on papers of various colors\, JEFF MILLER’s fluidly elegant figure drawings – male nudes\, in the main – represent a Covid-era departure from JEFF MILLER’s customary practice.  No longer able to draw the live model\, the artist was obliged to step out of the world of 3 dimensions and rely on the 2-dimensional world of photography\, a resort the artist would previously have strictly shunned. JEFF MILLER says: “To my surprise\, this loss was also a gain. Online\, there is an endless supply of highly inspiring images\, most notable of dancers caught — often literally — in mid-flight\, and otherwise in beautifully complicated attitudes that a model (even a dancer!) could never hold in real life.” \nThe fruits of JEFF MILLER’s house-bound excursions have been choreographed on the walls of ATLANTIC GALLERY for this show. \nAs a counterweight to the line drawings in view\, STEPPING OUT! For the children\, though\, it was exactly that. After a few months of not seeing classmates\, they reunited for heady evenings of deep-fried foods\, rickety carnival rides that flipped them in every direction\, dart games\, and the latest gossip. This series consists of oil portraits of the artist’s friends and family surrounded by\, overlapped by\, and wearing multi-media patterns containing symbols and meanings related to who they are and what they love. Each in their own particular happy environment\, these characters gather together at Atlantic Gallery for just one week for The Carnival.
