SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: A Landscape Artist Responds
DESCRIPTION:Suzanne Chamlin\, Associate Professor of Studio Art and an artist whose own practice focuses on landscape\, will offer her reflections on the paintings on view in the exhibition Dusk & Dawn: Tonalism in Connecticut on Friday\, January 31 at 12 noon in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries. Space is limited. \n(Note: Professor Chamlin’s work was featured in a 2024 exhibition in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries; click here to learn more!) \nAbout the Exhibition: This exhibition explores Tonalism in the United States from the 1880s to the early 20th century\, through artists from the Northeast such as George Inness\, John Henry Twachtman\, and John Francis Murphy. Tonalism is a transitional movement that grew out of and reacted to the Hudson River School of painting and laid the groundwork for modernism. Evocative landscapes\, evoking a spiritual connection to the natural world\, often painted from memory\, are the primary genre of this movement. The more than fifty artworks in this exhibition are drawn from private and institutional collections. \nImage: J. Alden Weir\, Connecticut Hilltops\, ca. 1900\, oil on panel. SUMMARY:Art in Focus: Marcantonio Raimondi and Raphael\, Massacre of the Innocents
DESCRIPTION:Our Art in Focus series continues with the engraving of the Massacre of the Innocents\, a product of the collaboration between the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael and the printmaker Marcantonio Raimondi. The engraving depicts a violent dance of twisting\, straining bodies. The horror of the narrative (drawn from the Gospel of Matthew) is underscored by the mother racing directly toward the viewer\, her mouth open in a cry. \nJoin us at 12 noon on Thursday\, October 10 in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries for an informal conversation about this work\, led by Curator of Education Michelle DiMarzo\, PhD. We’ll talk about what collaboration meant for Renaissance artists! We’ll also talk print conservation and look at the “before” pictures of this engraving! If you’re looking for the virtual program\, click here. \nThis print is included in the exhibition Ink and Time: European Prints from the Wetmore Collection on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries through December 21. For more information about the exhibition\, visit our website here. \nImage: Marcantonio Raimondi and Raphael\, Massacre of the Innocents\, ca. 1511-14\, engraving. SUMMARY:Opening Reception - "Ink and Time" the Wetmore Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries and Great Hall from 6-8 p.m. for live music and conversation as we celebrate the opening of Ink and Time: European Prints from the Wetmore Collection! \nThis exhibition\, curated by Michelle DiMarzo\, PhD\, presents a group of woodcuts\, engravings\, and etchings from the late 15th through late 18th centuries drawn from the Wetmore Collection at Connecticut College. The collection was assembled in the early 20th century by New London\, CT native Fanny Wetmore\, and bequeathed to the College in 1930. \nAlthough little is known of Wetmore herself\, her collecting activities place her within a tradition dating back to the rise of printmaking in early modern Europe. The surging production of prints by the beginning of the 16th century represented a sea change for both artists and consumers. For artists\, prints provided additional revenue\, increased their personal fame\, and offered greater latitude for experimentation outside the traditional patronage structure. For consumers\, prints represented access to visual art on an unprecedented scale; even those who would never have been able to commission an independent work from a great artist could now readily obtain an engraving or an etching. Prints were easily transported\, could be pasted up on walls or into albums\, and even large collections of them took up relatively little room. And\, with the rise of reproductive printmaking\, even geographically distant or physically inaccessible artworks could be added to the collector’s “paper museum.” \nThis exhibition is the second in the Museum’s history to have been co-curated with Fairfield University students\, and has been supported by generous funding from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Learn more at the website here. \nImage: Giovanni Antonio Canal\, called Canaletto\, Market on the Molo\, ca. 1735-46\, etching. SUMMARY:Ink & Time: European Prints from the Wetmore Collection
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition samples the richness of European print culture between the late 15th and late 18th centuries through more than fifty woodcuts\, engravings\, and etchings\, including work by Raphael\, Dürer\, Rembrandt\, and Canaletto. The exhibition explores themes including the collaborative nature of printmaking\, the continuing demand for technical innovations\, and the problem of “reproductive” prints for the modern viewer. \nAll of the works in the exhibition are on loan from the Wetmore Collection at Connecticut College. This is the second exhibition to have been curated by Fairfield University students in the Museum Exhibition Seminar\, working alongside exhibition curator Michelle DiMarzo\, PhD (FUAM Curator of Education and Academic Engagement; Assistant Professor of Art History & Visual Culture\, VPA) \nImage: Albrecht Dürer\, Adam and Eve\, 1504\, engraving. SUMMARY:Suzanne Chamlin: Studies in Color
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition of recent work\, Chamlin explores ideas about color theory and light through a series of landscape and interior stills. Since 2012\, the artist has carefully charted her paints using the Munsell color system\, which analyzes colors in terms of hue (the color itself)\, value (relative light and dark) and chroma (level of saturation or brilliance). For each of her paintings\, Chamlin sets a highly specific palette; experimentation within this limited range then guides her decisions about process and pictorial space. \nAbout the Artist \nChamlin is Associate Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Visual & Performing Arts at Fairfield University. Her drawings are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art\, Yale University Art Gallery\, and the Nelson Atkins Museum. Chamlin has attended residencies at the Albers Foundation\, Yaddo\, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Ragdale\, Fundación Valparaiso\, and Edna St. Vincent Millay Colony. Chamlin received her B.A. from Barnard College and M.F.A. from Yale University. \nFor more about the exhibition\, visit our website here.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Tour: Helen Glazer - Walking in Antarctica
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of this extraordinary exhibition! \nIn 2015\, artist Helen Glazer traveled to Antarctica as a grantee of the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program\, in order to photograph ice and geological formations for eventual production as photographic prints and sculpture. She worked out of remote Antarctic scientific field camps and had access to protected areas that can only be entered with government permits or in the company of a skilled mountaineer. \nInspired and informed by her experiences\, Walking in Antarctica is an immersive\, interdisciplinary exhibition bringing together photography\, sculpture\, and audio narrative to take the viewer on a journey through an extraordinary environment of remote places that the tourist ships do not reach and few people get to witness in person. The exhibition is organized as a series of “walks” through remarkable Antarctic landscapes: over frozen lakes\, around towering glaciers and baroque sea ice formations\, into a magnificent frozen ice cave\, across fields of surreal-looking boulders\, and through a lively colony of nesting Adélie penguins. Visitors to the exhibition who have smartphones will be able to access an audio tour narrated by Glazer\, drawn from a blog in which she recorded her experiences. \nThrough her artwork\, Glazer strives to convey the wonder and complexity of the natural world to others\, in order to motivate a desire to protect and preserve wild places. Her study of earth science over the past several years heightened her awareness of multiple factors shaping the land over time. In recognizing that complex patterns in nature express the particular physical forces at work\, she became more attuned to the interplay between geology\, climate\, life forms\, and human activity in a given location. \nThis project is organized by Mid-America Arts Alliance and is an adaptation of the artist’s solo exhibition of the same title held at the Rosenberg Gallery at Goucher College (Baltimore\, MD) that was funded in part by grants from the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance and the Puffin Foundation. Creation of this work was made possible in part by a Rubys Artist Project Grant\, a program of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance conceived and initiated with funding from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation\, and by a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant.
