SUMMARY:Lecture: Heimat Photography and the Art of Trude Fleischmann
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, June 12 at 5 p.m.\, Elizabeth Cronin\, author of Heimat Photography in Austria (2015)\, explores Trude Fleischmann in relation to this aspect of 1930s visual culture. “In Austria\, what is generally referred to as Heimat (home or homeland) photography featured local sights: peasants\, churchgoers\, skiers and rural alpine landscapes. As these traditional\, romanticized images came to be identified with the idea of a nation\, they were used by the Standestaat of 1930s Austria to promote a national identity that grew into fascism.” \nAbout the Exhibition: Austrian-born Trude Fleischmann (1895-1990) was one of the most accomplished female photographers of the 20th century. After great success in Vienna in the 20s photographing artists\, models\, and performers\, she fled the Anschluss in 1938\, first to Paris and then New York. She opened a studio on Fifth Avenue in 1940 and photographed many of the artists and intellectuals of the day\, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Albert Einstein. This exhibition will include loans from the Wien Museum in Vienna\, Austria\, private collections\, and the New York Public Library\, as well as never-before-exhibited works from family collections. \nThe event will also be livestreamed\, click here to register for a reminder. \nPlease note: A docent-led tour of the exhibition Famous & Family: Through the Lens of Trude Fleischmann will be held at 4 p.m.in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries\, register here! \nImage: Trude Fleischmann\, Upper Salzburg\, At the Festival\, ca. 1930\, gelatin silver print. SUMMARY:Opening Night Lecture: "Ink and Time"\, from the Wetmore Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of Ink and Time: European Prints from the Wetmore Collection on Thursday\, September 26! Exhibition curator Michelle DiMarzo\, PhD\, will present an opening lecture at 5 p.m. in Bellarmine Hall’s Diffley Board Room. \nAbout the Exhibition: This exhibition presents a group of woodcuts\, engravings\, and etchings from the late 15th through late 18th centuries drawn from the Wetmore Collection at Connecticut College. The collection was assembled in the early 20th century by New London\, CT native Fanny Wetmore\, and bequeathed to the College in 1930. \nAlthough little is known of Wetmore herself\, her collecting activities place her within a tradition dating back to the rise of printmaking in early modern Europe. The surging production of prints by the beginning of the 16th century represented a sea change for both artists and consumers. For artists\, prints provided additional revenue\, increased their personal fame\, and offered greater latitude for experimentation outside the traditional patronage structure. For consumers\, prints represented access to visual art on an unprecedented scale; even those who would never have been able to commission an independent work from a great artist could now readily obtain an engraving or an etching. Prints were easily transported\, could be pasted up on walls or into albums\, and even large collections of them took up relatively little room. And\, with the rise of reproductive printmaking\, even geographically distant or physically inaccessible artworks could be added to the collector’s “paper museum.” \nThis exhibition is the second in the Museum’s history to have been co-curated with Fairfield University students\, and has been supported by generous funding from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. \nLearn more at the website here. SUMMARY:Opening Night Lecture with Artist Suzanne Chamlin
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night Lecture \nArtist Suzanne Chamlin\, interviewed by Marice Rose\, PhD\, Thursday April 4\, 5 p.m. at Bellarmine Hall\, Diffley Board Room\, and streaming on the quicklive.com \nIn this exhibition of recent work\, Chamlin explores ideas about color theory and light through a series of landscape and interior stills. Since 2012\, the artist has carefully charted her paints using the Munsell color system\, which analyzes colors in terms of hue (the color itself)\, value (relative light and dark) and chroma (level of saturation or brilliance). For each of her paintings\, Chamlin sets a highly specific palette; experimentation within this limited range then guides her decisions about process and pictorial space. \nAbout the Artist \nChamlin is Associate Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Visual & Performing Arts at Fairfield University. Her drawings are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art\, Yale University Art Gallery\, and the Nelson Atkins Museum. Chamlin has attended residencies at the Albers Foundation\, Yaddo\, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Ragdale\, Fundación Valparaiso\, and Edna St. Vincent Millay Colony. Chamlin received her B.A. from Barnard College and M.F.A. from Yale University. \nFaculty Liaison: Marice Rose\, PhD\, Professor of Art History & Visual Culture \nPresented in conjunction with Suzanne Chamlin: Studies in Color (Bellarmine Hall Galleries\, April 5–July 27). SUMMARY:Lecture: Long Ago and Far Away:Three “Summers” on a Remote Antarctic Island
DESCRIPTION:Long Ago and Far Away: Three “Summers” on a Remote Antarctic Island \n“One of the most unique experiences in my life – three austral summers on a small island off the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula – opened my eyes and mind to a future in science that would have never emerged without my time on Seal Island.” Brian Walker\, PhD \nBrian Walker\, PhD is Professor of Biology at Fairfield University. He studies how Magellanic penguins (a small species native to South America) respond to stress and changes in their environment. In his lecture\, entitled “Long Ago and Far Away: Three “Summers” on a Remote Antarctic Island\,” Dr. Walker discusses his early career as a graduate student and early-career researcher. \nHis lecture is presented in conjunction with Helen Glazer: Walking in Antarctica (Bellarmine Hall Galleries\, February 2–March 16).
