SUMMARY:Art in Focus: Robertson Mygatt\, Edge of the Pond\, ca. 1910
DESCRIPTION:Our spring 2025 Art in Focus series begins with a piece from the new exhibition Dusk & Dawn: Tonalism in Connecticut! \, or online via The Quick Live. \nAbout the Exhibition: This exhibition explores Tonalism in the United States from the 1880s to the early 20th century\, through artists from the Northeast such as George Inness\, John Henry Twachtman\, and John Francis Murphy. Tonalism is a transitional movement that grew out of and reacted to the Hudson River School of painting and laid the groundwork for modernism. Evocative landscapes\, evoking a spiritual connection to the natural world\, often painted from memory\, are the primary genre of this movement. The more than fifty artworks in this exhibition are drawn from private and institutional collections. \nImage: Robertson Mygatt\, Edge of Pond\, ca.1910. Oil on Canvas. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Suzanne Chamlin
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk: Suzanne Chamlin \nBellarmine Hall\, Bellarmine Hall Galleries \nIn this exhibition of recent work\, Chamlin explores ideas about color theory and light through a series of landscape and interior stills. Since 2012\, the artist has carefully charted her paints using the Munsell color system\, which analyzes colors in terms of hue (the color itself)\, value (relative light and dark) and chroma (level of saturation or brilliance). For each of her paintings\, Chamlin sets a highly specific palette; experimentation within this limited range then guides her decisions about process and pictorial space. \nAbout the Artist \nSuzanne Chamlin is Associate Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Visual & Performing Arts at Fairfield University. Her drawings are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art\, Yale University Art Gallery\, and the Nelson Atkins Museum. Chamlin has attended residencies at the Albers Foundation\, Yaddo\, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Ragdale\, Fundación Valparaiso\, and Edna St. Vincent Millay Colony. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Helen Glazer: Walking in Antarctica
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of our new exhibition Helen Glazer: Walking in Antarctica on Thursday\, February 1 from 6-8 p.m.! Get the first glimpse of the exhibition in our Bellarmine Hall Galleries\, and enjoy some wine\, cheese\, and conversation in Bellarmine’s Great Hall. Live music will be provided by Fairfield alum Joe Barbieri. \nThe party starts after the opening lecture\, which will be presented by artist Helen Glazer in the Diffley Board Room. To register for that event\, click here. \nIn 2015\, artist Helen Glazer traveled to Antarctica as a grantee of the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program\, in order to photograph ice and geological formations for eventual production as photographic prints and sculpture. She worked out of remote Antarctic scientific field camps and had access to protected areas that can only be entered with government permits or in the company of a skilled mountaineer. \nInspired and informed by her experiences\, Walking in Antarctica is an immersive\, interdisciplinary exhibition bringing together photography\, sculpture\, and audio narrative to take the viewer on a journey through an extraordinary environment of remote places that the tourist ships do not reach and few people get to witness in person. The exhibition is organized as a series of “walks” through remarkable Antarctic landscapes: over frozen lakes\, around towering glaciers and baroque sea ice formations\, into a magnificent frozen ice cave\, across fields of surreal-looking boulders\, and through a lively colony of nesting Adélie penguins. Visitors to the exhibition who have smartphones will be able to access an audio tour narrated by Glazer\, drawn from a blog in which she recorded her experiences. \nThrough her artwork\, Glazer strives to convey the wonder and complexity of the natural world to others\, in order to motivate a desire to protect and preserve wild places. Her study of earth science over the past several years heightened her awareness of multiple factors shaping the land over time. In recognizing that complex patterns in nature express the particular physical forces at work\, she became more attuned to the interplay between geology\, climate\, life forms\, and human activity in a given location. \nThis project is organized by Mid-America Arts Alliance and is an adaptation of the artist’s solo exhibition of the same title held at the Rosenberg Gallery at Goucher College (Baltimore\, MD) that was funded in part by grants from the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance and the Puffin Foundation. Creation of this work was made possible in part by a Rubys Artist Project Grant\, a program of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance conceived and initiated with funding from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation\, and by a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant. \nFaculty Liaison: Brian Walker\, PhD\, Professor of Biology \nTo learn more about the exhibition\, visit our website here \nHelen Glazer\, Tanguy Ventifact\, Dry Valleys\, Antarctica\, 2015\, archival pigment print. © Helen Glazer

SUMMARY:Exhibition Tour: “In Real Times: Arthur Szyk-Artist and Soldier for Human Rights”
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries for a special tour of the exhibition In Real Times. Arthur Szyk: Artist and Soldier for Human Rights\, on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries from September 29-December 16\, 2023.  \nDon’t miss Szyk: The Interactive Experience in the Walsh Gallery in the Quick Center for the Arts. \nAbout the exhibition: \nThis special exhibition\, organized around the theme of human rights features more than 50 works by acclaimed Polish Jewish miniaturist and political cartoonist Arthur Szyk (1899-1951)\, including political cartoons\, and images that honor the power and importance of democratic ideals. A witness to the rise of totalitarianism in Europe\, Szyk emigrated from London to America at the beginning of World War II. He lived and worked in Connecticut\, and passed away in New Canaan in 1951. His powerful political cartoons animated the covers of magazines such as Time and Collier’s\, raising awareness of the plight of European Jews and helping sway public opinion toward support for American participation in the Second World War. As a self-described “soldier in art\,” Szyk’s work was acclaimed by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as a potent weapon “against Hitlerism.” He advocated for religious tolerance\, racial equality\, and human dignity. Active in the years leading up to World War II and during the Holocaust\, Szyk became one of America’s most celebrated political artists for his powerful artistic and social contributions against Nazism and fascism. As our communities continue to confront issues of structural racism and social upheaval — including the sharp rise in antisemitic rhetoric and violence across the United States— this exhibition provides a platform for conversations on the urgent topics of human rights and social justice. \nhttps://www.fairfield.edu/museum/szyk/ \n  \nImage: Arthur Szyk\, Thomas Jefferson’s Oath\, watercolor\, gouache\, ink\, and colored pencil on board\, 1951\, Taube Family Arthur Szyk Collection\, The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life\, University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Art in Focus: Arthur Szyk\, "Madness"
DESCRIPTION:Each event in our Art in Focus series offers a chance for an informal discussion centered around a single art object\, led by Curator of Education and Academic Engagement Michelle DiMarzo. \nJoin us for an in-person discussion of Madness\, a mixed media political cartoon on paper by Arthur Szyk. Bring your questions and observations to the conversation! \nPlease note: This event is in-person only. Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/art-in-focus-arthur-szyk-madness-tickets-631539059327 \n If you would like to join the Virtual Art in Focus at 12 p.m.\, click here! \n  \nThis event is in conjunction with the exhibition In Real Times – Arthur Szyk: Artist and Soldier for Human Rights\, on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries from September 29-December 16\, 2023. \nDon’t miss Szyk: The Interactive Experience in the Walsh Gallery in the Quick Center for the Arts. \n  \nAbout the exhibition: \nThis special exhibition\, organized around the theme of human rights features more than 50 works by acclaimed Polish Jewish miniaturist and political cartoonist Arthur Szyk (1899-1951)\, including political cartoons\, and images that honor the power and importance of democratic ideals. \nhttps://www.fairfield.edu/museum/szyk/ \n  \nImage: Arthur Szyk\, Madness\, 1941\, Watercolor\, gouache\, ink and graphite on paper\, Taube Family Arthur Szyk Collection\, The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life\, University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Art in Focus: Norma Minkowitz\, “Goodbye Goddess”
DESCRIPTION:Our Art in Focus series offers the opportunity for a close look at a single work of art! \nJoin us for a discussion of “Goodbye Goddess\,” a mixed-media work by Norma Minkowitz and part of the temporary exhibition “Norma Minkowitz: Body to Soul\,” on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries from January 27 – April 6\, 2023. Bring your questions and observations to the in-person conversation! \nPlease note: This event is in-person only and will not be live streamed. If you are interested in the Virtual Art in Focus on Thursday\, March 2 at 12 p.m.\, click here! \nAbout the exhibition: “Norma Minkowitz: Body to Soul” is a solo exhibition surveying the artist’s four-decade engagement with the physical and symbolic properties of thread. Minkowitz reinvents traditional needlework by crocheting fantastical forms\, coating them in resin and shellac to create rigid sculptures and hangings. The delicate\, mesh-like surfaces of her artworks break down oppositions between soft and hard\, inside and outside\, body and soul. \nThe poetic title “Body to Soul” is borrowed from just one of the sculptures that will be on view\, but it is a broader theme that reverberates across the exhibition’s selection of over thirty vessels\, sculptures\, wall hangings\, wearables\, and works on paper – including never-before-seen examples coming from the artist’s studio. \nNorma Minkowitz lives and works in Connecticut. Her work is represented in private and public collections across the United States and internationally. She is unique among fiber artists creating hard sculptures from soft materials\, and for using thread to invoke universal themes of mortality\, memory\, nature\, and writing. The exhibition is guest curated by Sarah Parrish PhD.\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Plymouth State University\, New Hampshire. \nhttps://www.fairfield.edu/museum/norma-minkowitz/ \n  \nImage: Norma Minkowitz\, “Goodbye Goddess\,” 2003\, paint and resin on fiber. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Norma Minkowitz
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special gallery talk with fiber artist Norma Minkowitz! \nNorma Minkowitz\, whose work is on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries January 27-April 8\, 2023\, will be in-person in our galleries to discuss her work. \nPlease note: This event is in-person only and will not be recorded. Space is very limited–register soon! \nAbout the exhibition: \nNorma Minkowitz: Body to Soul is a solo exhibition surveying the artist’s four-decade engagement with the physical and symbolic properties of thread. \nThe poetic title Body to Soul is borrowed from just one of the sculptures that will be on view\, but it is a broader theme that reverberates across the exhibition’s selection of over thirty vessels\, sculptures\, wall hangings\, wearables\, and works on paper – including never-before-seen examples coming from the artist’s studio. \nhttps://www.fairfield.edu/museum/norma-minkowitz/ \n  \nImage: Norma Minkowitz\, Self-Portrait\, 2010\, pen and ink drawing with collage.
