SUMMARY:An Evening with Christina Weyl\, Author of "The Women of Atelier 17"
DESCRIPTION:The Greenwich Arts Council and Bruce Museum are pleased to announce the second in a series of engaging educational programs\, An Evening with Author and Scholar Christina Weyl. \nThe evening’s program will start at the Greenwich Arts Council with cocktails\, and an opportunity to view the exhibition WOMEN OF ATELIER 17 in the Bendheim Gallery from 5:00 – 6:00 pm on February 25.  The reception will be followed by Weyl’s talk at the Bruce Museum at 6:30 – 8:00 pm.  Anitra Brooks\, a docent at the Greenwich Arts Council\, will be facilitating the talk\, as well as moderating a question and answer session. \nAtelier 17 operated as an uncommonly egalitarian laboratory for revolutionizing print technique\, style\, and scale. It facilitated women artists’ engagement with modernist styles\, providing a forum for extraordinary achievements that shaped postwar sculpture\, fiber art\, neo-Dadaism\, and the Pattern and Decoration movement. \nWeyl’s new book\, “The Women of Atelier 17: Modernist Printmaking in Midcentury New York\,” follows eight women\, who worked at the avant-garde printmaking workshop between 1940 and 1955.   This program will give attendees unprecedented access to the creative process behind the works of Atelier 17. \nTo Register: Tickets are $25 for Arts Council and Bruce Museum members\, $35 for non-members. For more information or for assistance making a reservation\, contact Corinne Flax at 203-413-6742 or cflax@brucemuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Conservator’s Talk: Aspects of L.A. Ring’s Working Methods
DESCRIPTION:Opening on February 1\, 2020 at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich\, CT\, On the Edge of the World: Masterworks by Laurits Andersen Ring from SMK—the National Gallery of Denmark provides an unprecedented opportunity for U.S. audiences to see the work of this great Nordic artist. \nOn the Edge of the World will be accompanied by a series of lectures and special programs\, beginning with a Conservator’s Talk: Aspects of L.A. Ring’s Working Methods\, on Sunday\, February 2\, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm. Dr. Jørgen Wadum\, former Director of Conservation at SMK and current Director of the Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation in Denmark\, will discuss how an examination of the complex structure of materials and techniques beneath the visible “skin” of Ring’s paintings reveals fascinating details of the artist’s intent. This talk is free to Museum members and visitors with paid admission. Reservations are required; visit brucemuseum.org or call 203-869-0376. \nL.A. Ring (1854-1933)\, a Realist and Symbolist painter\, ranks among the most significant figures in Danish art. The national gallery of Denmark holds the largest collection of Ring’s paintings and drawings. On the Edge of the World showcases 25 of his most important paintings\, which represent the key themes\, sheer variety\, and complexity of his work. The exhibition travels to only two U.S. venues. The Bruce Museum is the only one on the East Coast.

SUMMARY:Bruce Presents: Duchamp to De Kooning\, Kahlo to Koons: 100 Years\, 100 Works of Art
DESCRIPTION:Can a single work of art symbolize a year in history? Renowned art historian Dr. Agnes Berecz faced this dilemma while writing “100 Years\, 100 Works of Art: A History of Modern and Contemporary Art” (Prestel\, 2019)\, which presents and thoroughly details one work of art\, to sum up every year between 1918 and 2018. Join Dr. Berecz – along with Katja Zigerlig\, Vice President of Fine Art\, Wine & Collectibles at Berkley One – for a lively discussion of the criteria that guided the choices found in the book. \nIn a twist\, author Berecz will invite the audience on 10 artworks – one for each decade covered in the volume. Dr. Berecz will show 10 pairs of images\, representing one year in each decade. Berecz will give a brief primer on both works of art shown and will explain why they were her “semi-finalists” for a work of art that represented that particular year. \nBerecz will then ask the audience to vote\, by a show of hands\, for which artwork they think she ultimately chose to signify that year\, before revealing the work of art she chose – and why she chose it. \nFollowing the audience interaction portion of the evening\, Berecz and Zigerlig will delve further into “100 Years\, 100 Works of Art” before opening up the conversation to take questions from the audience. \nDoors open 6:20 pm; reception begins at 6:30 pm\, followed by panel and Q&A starting at 7:00 pm. \nSeats are $30 for Bruce Museum members\, $45 for non-members. SUMMARY:Bruce Museum Presents: “Rewind/Fast-Forward: Celebrating the Artist Documentaries of Olympia Stone”
DESCRIPTION:Bruce Museum Presents is an exciting new series of monthly public programs featuring thought leaders in the fields of art and science. Showcasing experts on compelling subjects of relevance and interest to members and visitors to the Bruce Museum\, as well as the communities of greater Fairfield County and beyond\, Bruce Museum Presents continues on Thursday\, November 7\, 6 – 8:30 pm with “Rewind/Fast-Forward: Celebrating the Artist Documentaries of Olympia Stone.” \nOlympia Stone is an independent producer of documentary films about art and artists. Her first documentary\, The Collector\, explored the five-decade career of her father\, famed NYC gallery owner and art collector Allan Stone. Since then\, her award-winning films continue to probe the motivations and personal histories of eclectic artists as a way of providing insight into their work. \nJoin Olympia Stone\, and two of Stone’s artist subjects—James Grashow (The Cardboard Bernini) and Elizabeth King (Double Take: The Art of Elizabeth King)—for a retrospective of these astonishing and illuminating films\, and their maker. Moderated by Leonard Jacobs. \nFirst broadcast nationwide on PBS in 2012\, The Cardboard Bernini won Best Documentary at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival 2013\, and was an official selection at 20 additional festivals\, including Sebastopol and Santa Fe. The Cardboard Bernini examines the life and work of artist James Grashow as he spends five years building a giant cardboard fountain\, inspired by the work of the famous Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Propelled by a crucial event documented in the film\, Grashow is driven to experience the process of creation and loss by making an extraordinary artwork that will be destroyed in the end. \nDouble Take: The Art of Elizabeth King engages the viewer in the work of sculptor and stop-action filmmaker Elizabeth King\, who embarks on each new project by posing a single question to herself: “Can this be physically done?” Tracing King’s creative flow\, curiosity\, and obsessive drive to solve the inevitable series of artistic and technical problems that arise in creating her disconcerting sculptures and animations\, this documentary film explores King’s passion about the mind/body riddle\, the science of emotion\, the human/machine interface\, and those things a robot will never be able to do. \nDoors open 6:00 pm for a reception with light bites and beverages\, followed by the panel discussion and Q&A\, 7:00-8:30 pm. Seats are $30 for Museum members\, $45 for nonmembers. To reserve a seat at Rewind/Fast-Forward\, visit brucemuseum.org or call 203-869- 0376.
