SUMMARY:Clear Visions: A Three Woman Exhibition that Includes Gail Winbury
DESCRIPTION:Carter Burden Gallery presents Clear Visions\, a three woman exhibition that includes Gail Winbury’s Field of Green series.\n\n“In Clear Visions Gail Winbury presents mixed media paintings from her current series Field of Green. Using a combination of oil paint\, pigment stick\, cold wax\, and charcoal on linen or canvas\, Winbury synthesizes gestural painting with a minimal approach. She builds a layered surface revealing and obscuring what is beneath. The ambivalence between the wish to be known\, and the wish to be disguised and hidden is integral to her work.”

SUMMARY:Francie Lyshak and Linda Casbon at Carter Burden Gallery NYC
DESCRIPTION:Carter Burden Gallery presents the paintings of Francie Lyshak together with ceramics by Linda Casbon opening Thursday\, September 9\, 1-7 pm in the Main Gallery. Covid protocols are in place and vaccine proof is required as well as masks. As Dominique Nahas observes about Lyshak’s canvases: “Francie Lyshak is dedicated to making nuanced monochromatic oil paintings with surface-tension exacerbated through raised and indented surfaces as well as the planting\, so to speak\, of unanticipated details that delight the eye.” The glowing pigment fields in Francie Lyshak’s paintings\, scraped with sculptural marks\, create a surface relief that interacts with the ambient light with the result that these textured oils are discrete objects in and of themselves.

SUMMARY:Inside Outside
DESCRIPTION:“Inside Outside” features Francie Lyshak’s most recent abstract work of monochromatic oil paintings. In these pieces Lyshak concentrates on the interaction of painted colored surfaces with reflected and refracted light. Applying her material with a palette knife\, she allows the canvas a renewed objecthood and a unique presence. Some works feature patterns of repeated words and phrases\, some legible\, others of which vanish into the physical substance of the work. Other works concentrate on textured of fields of color in deceptively simple compositions. By so doing\, Lyshak conjures contemplative moods\, atmospheres and fluid meanings that prompt a meditative gaze\, a calm\, mindful form of looking. \nFrancie Lyshak\, b. 1948\, studied art in Paris\, Detroit and NYC culminating in a master’s degree from Pratt Institute. Her painting career began in the 1970s as a young feminist in the East Village where she was a part of a community of anti-establishment artists\, musicians and writers that included David Wojnarowicz\, Peter Hujar\, Gary Indiana\, Bill Rice\, and John Lurie. Francie Lyshak has exhibited in solo exhibitions at venues around New York including\, most often\, La Mama La Galleria and Carter Burden Gallery. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including La Mama La Galleria\, Denise Bibro Fine Art\, A.I.R. Gallery\, RC Fine Arts\, Barbara Ann Levy Gallery\, Sikkema Jenkins & Co.\, Carter Burden Gallery\, and Stephen Harvey Fine Arts\, and has shown work with curators and jurors including Alice Neel\, Patterson Sims\, and Paulina Pobocha. Lyshak is the recipient of awards at competitions and events including the First Annual Prize Competition\, Provincetown Arts Association and Museum; Museum of the Hudson Highlands Fourth Annual Competition\, Cornwall-on-Hudson\, NY; and Annual Faber Birren National Color Award. Her work is represented in the collection of the Bronx Children’s Center\, and in private collections in the US and UK.

SUMMARY:Metamorphosis | Claire Boren\, Pauline Chernichaw\, & Carlos N. Molina
DESCRIPTION:Carter Burden Gallery presents three new exhibitions: Metamorphosis in the East Gallery featuring Claire Boren\, Pauline Chernichaw\, & Carlos N. Molina\, Visions and Voices in the West gallery featuring nextactART\, and On the Wall featuring Adrianne Lobel. The reception will be held February 13\, 2020 from 6 – 8 p.m. The exhibition runs from February 13 thru March 11\, 2020 at 548 West 28th Street in New York City. The gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Saturday 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. \nIn Metamorphosis\, Claire Boren presents recent large\, abstract mixed media works. The inspiration for Boren’s works often stem from her personal history; they represent her feelings and mindset as she processes each experience. In the past her artwork has served her in times stress or sadness. Entering the studio\, Boren would pour everything into process\, lashing at the paper\, each stroke relieving unease and anger. This approach helped the artist through many challenging times. Her most recent pieces featured in Metamorphosis were created as she prepared for a move. Boren states\, “In contrast to much of my earlier work\, these paintings express the urgency and anxiety associated with such decisions\, offset by the immediacy of our present time. These works embody my current frame of mind—a transition from one phase to the next. \nIn her first exhibition with Carter Burden Gallery\, Pauline Chernichaw\, presents paintings from her series Cocoon in the exhibition Metamorphosis. Influenced and inspired by her family background\, Chernichaw’s powerfully abstract work portrays her imaginings of being guardedly sheltered within a cocoonlike environment. Her artwork embraces a display of limited color\, organically rooted and intuitively altered forms. The paintings are symbolic of people’s need for self-protection\, security\, comfort and safe refuge from the outside world. \nCarlos N. Molina\, a paper sculptor and a digital artist\, exhibits tridimentional objects of ephemeral nature created using paper in his first exhibition with Carter Burden Gallery\, Metamorphosis. The accessibility and malleability of the medium allows him the opportunity to play with the material. This playing with possibilities lets hidden forms reveal themselves and transforms lines and shapes into whimsical figurative and abstract objects. Molina states\, “The idea of having a flat surface like a sheet of paper transform into a piece with volume is very inspiring to me\, especially creating organic\, soft forms\, and freestyle abstracts.”
