SUMMARY:LYNNE TOBIN
DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents works on paper by Lynne Tobin. The exhibition opens 8 August and runs through 8 September\, 2024 with an opening reception on Saturday\, August 10\, 2024 from 5 – 7pm and a finissage with the artist in attendance on Sunday\, September 8\, 2024 from 6 – 8 PM. \nWith string and Sumi ink\, Lynne Tobin’s black and white drawings explore mark-making inherent in textures and expressed by gesture. Spontaneous marks made by threads and rope saturated in ink are in contrast to her careful linear repeating patterns.Tobin’s immediate world\, every-day rituals\, and meditation practice inspire the rhythms in her work. \nAbout the Artist: Lynne Tobin is a mixed-media artist who lives and works in New York State’s Hudson Valley region. Previously\, Tobin maintained a studio and exhibited extensively in the Providence\, RI area including the Chazen Gallery\, The Krause Gallery\, The Mill Gallery (Pawtucket\, R.I.) and the New Bedford Art Museum (New Bedford\, MA). Recently\, she was in a two-person exhibition together with Millicent Young at Castello 925. This current solo show at Castello 925’s other venue at 780 is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Venice. \nAbout CASTELLO 925: \nCastello 925 is a multi-disciplinary\, non-profit gallery which serves as a works that were built elsewhere\, yet also a space where new ideas and new co-operations come to life. Castello 925 provides room to live and breathe — not just for exhibitions\, but support for the everyday life of an artist\, the quietude of  a writer’s research\, or the exchange between passionate art-seekers and collectors.crucible for the visual arts\, literature and culture. Founder Luca Caldironi envisioned a space dedicated to creativity\, or rather cre-activity. Castello 925 is a gallery with two venues: one at 925 and the other at 780\, where experimental expressions of all kinds come to meet\, collaborate\, improvise\, produce and construct; a place to present “finished” works that were built elsewhere\, yet also a space where new ideas and new co-operations come to life. Castello 925 provides room to live and breathe — not just for exhibitions\, but support for the everyday life of an artist\, the quietude of  a writer’s research\, or the exchange between passionate art-seekers and collectors.

SUMMARY:Kaethe Kauffman | La Foresta
DESCRIPTION:KAETHE KAUFFMAN | LA FORESTA\nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 19\, 2024  5:00 – 8:00 PM\nKaethe Kauffman meditates on the unseen systems of forest growth as well as on\nmemories of the calm\, steady presence of individual trees throughout her life. Her most\nrecent series of prints on paper and silk not only explore the individuality and spirit of\ntrees combined with the physical movement of walking through nature but then\ncaptures this sensation with the meditative movements of drawing. These artworks\, in\nturn\, are transformed into prints on silk banners and on paper mounted onto wood\npanels. The lightweight fabric installations act as thin veils of consciousness. The\ninstallation of 20 prints mounted onto woodblocks re-combine into a larger mural until\nthe image of individual trees is subsumed into a collective vision. \nAbout the Artist:\nKaethe Kauffman was born in Cheverly\, Maryland and grew up in Seattle.\nA long-time practitioner of yoga and body movement\, Kaethe Kauffman has been the\nsubject of solo exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad including the\nRensselaer Newman Foundation\, Troy\, NY; Allen Gallery\, Memphis\, TN; Lichtundfire\nGallery and Walter Wickiser Gallery in NYC\, NY; Joyce Goldstein Gallery\, Chatham\, NY;\nBanco Gallery\, Bethlehem\, PA; University of Nebraska\, Omaha; Berry College\, Mount\nBerry\, GA; Czech Museum of Fine Arts\, Prague; the Sierra Arts Foundation Gallery\,Reno\, NV and Castello 925\, Venice\, IT on the occasion of the 59th Venice Biennale.

SUMMARY:MARTIN WEINSTEIN - Inside | Outside
DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents a solo exhibition of paintings  by Martin Weinstein in the Castello 780 gallery starting on September 16  and running through November 26\, 2023. The exhibition\, entitled Inside | Outside\, considers the layers of space that range from the interior of a room to the wide expanse of the landscape beyond. By working on several sheets of acrylic\, Weinstein isolates these different distances with deft\, gestural brushwork. It is the manipulation of these layers and the ability to “reshuffle” each of them one in front of another that creates confusion as to what is near and what is far away. These layers are in turn encased in a clear\, acrylic box that allows the ambient light to shift and change the colors of paintings while glowing through one another. These sculptural\, illuminated painting boxes act as containers that hold a period of time as well as an ever-changing kaleidoscope of space.

SUMMARY:JENNE CURRIE | TRACY PHILLIPS
DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents a two-person exhibition of sculptural collages by Jenne Currie and small oil paintings by Tracy Phillips opening 22 July and running through 10 September\, 2023 with a reception for the artists on Saturday\, 22 July from 18:30 – 20:30 at Castello 780\, Venice IT. Both of these artists have shown extensively in the United States and this is their first exhibition in Italy.  \n  \nJenne Currie’s paintings balance sculptural space against the limits of the two-dimensional substrate. The shadows made by the suspended shapes are influenced by shifting ambient light. These ever-changing silhouettes allow the passage of time its accompanying shadows to serve as a painterly component alongside pigments and medium. \n  \nTracy Phillips straddles a space that shifts between within and without and her colors illuminate passageways. Phillips’ brushwork describes naturalistic light effects on configurations balancing on the cusp of the known and unknowable. The perceived sensation is of a world originating somewhere inside the viewer and then traversing beyond into more obscure realms. \n  \nAbout Jenne Currie \nJenne Currie is a sculptor\, painter and art educator based in Woodstock\, NY. She has shown extensively in the United States and has had solo shows most recently in Buster Levi Gallery\, Beacon NY and has participated in group exhibitions at the Lockwood Gallery\, Kingston NY.  \n  \nAbout Tracy Phillips \nTracy Phillips is an American artist working in New York City and in the Catskills. Having exhibited widely\, Phillips has participated in many exhibitions and was recently awarded the Arthur Harris award from the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum.  \n  \nAbout Castello 925 \nCastello 925 is a multi-disciplined gallery which serves as a crucible for the visual arts\, literature and culture. Founder Luca Caldironi envisioned a space dedicated to creativity\, or rather cre-activity\, an all-embracing 360-degree innovative nexus offering plenty of opportunity for imagination. Castello 925 is a gallery where experimental expressions of all kinds come to meet\, collaborate\, improvise\, produce and construct; a place to present “finished” works that were built elsewhere\, yet also a space where new ideas and new co-operations come to life. Castello 925 provides room to live and breathe — not just for exhibitions\, but support for the everyday life of an artist\, the quietude of  a writer’s research\, or the exchange between passionate art-seekers and collectors.

SUMMARY:Melinda Stickney-Gibson & Gary Gissler
DESCRIPTION:ONIRICA: MELINDA STICKNEY-GIBSON & GARY GISSLER · \nJuly 15 – August 28\, 2022 \nCastello 925 \nFondamenta San’Isepo 780 \nSestiere Castello\, Venice IT \nOPENING RECEPTION: Friday\, 15 July\, 19:00 – 21:00 | 7-9pm. \nVenice\, Italy: Castello 925 presents Onirica\, a two-person exhibition of paintings and drawings by Melinda Stickney-Gibson and small works by Gary Gissler opening 15 July and running through 28 Aug\, 2022. \nOnirica\, an adjective that translates as “dream-like” in English\, is the uniting concept of the work of these two New York-based artists.  Melinda Stickney-Gibson artworks are sensitive meditations on the texture of memory as her lines and forms alternate between awareness and an oneiric state through flickering shadows of consciousness. As a visual poet\, Ms. Stickney-Gibson incorporates written words as suggestive notations\, while her lines and forms echo the trembling edges of nature. Gary Gissler’s microscopic/obsessive drawings on prepared panelsweave words in a meditative repetitive cycle that creates an undulating\, fragile pattern from seemingly asemic writing. This preoccupation with words as symbols representing meaning as well as the actual words created by the literal marks and forms themselves lends a delicate balance between representation and abstraction.  Like dreams\, both artists convey the poetry of symbol and substance; the dream\, seemingly irrational and random\, nevertheless relays a tale of universal mythic power of which these artists serve as oracles. \n About Melinda Stickney-Gibson \nMelinda Stickney-Gibson has been living and working in New York for over 30 years. She has had over 25 one-person exhibitions\, and has participated in numerous group shows throughout the country. Her work has been reviewed in ARTnews\, ARTS Magazine\, REVIEW Magazine\, Neoteric Art\, ARTNET\, and others. Ms. Stickney-Gibson’s work can be found in many public collections including the Neuberger Museum of Art\, The Dorsky Museum\, San Francisco Opera Plaza\, Tribeca Bridge Tower\, Triptych Films\, Los Angeles and other corporate and private collections. Melinda Stickney-Gibson has been a recipient of two Pollack Krasner Grants. \n About Gary Gissler \nGary Gissler is an American artist working in New York City and in the Catskills. Having exhibited widely\, Gissler has been the subject of many solo exhibitions and artists’ essays. He has been reviewed in Art in America\, Flash Art\, Art News\, The New Yorker\, ArtNet\, and others. Gary Gissler has a long history of being collected privately\, and his work is currently included at the RISD Museum and the Neuberger Museum. Gary Gissler has been awarded a Pollock Krasner Grant and a Chinati Foundation Artist Residency. \nO N I R I C A opens with a reception for the artists Friday\, July 15\, 2022 from 7pm – 9pm\, 19:00 – 21:00 (GMT + 1). SUMMARY:Martin Weinstein: Vedute Palinsesti
DESCRIPTION:Castello 925 presents a solo exhibition of paintings by Martin Weinstein in their sister gallery\, Castello 780 opening 20 April and running through 10 July\, 2022. The exhibition\, titled Vedute Palinsesti\, refers to the traces left behind after earlier writing is effaced to make room for newer writing in medieval manuscripts. Martin Weinstein presents different stages of seeing by painting on layers of acrylic and allowing the layers to re-combine together and glow through one another. These paintings at first glance\, seem rooted in the landscape tradition however the artworks represent perceptions that together become an individual record of space and being. In his solo exhibition\, Vedute Palinsesti\, the combined images are painted in multiple sessions of direct observation from Weinstein’s rented studio in Castello\, Venezia at different times\, different days – and sometimes even years apart – yet always from the same point of view. The final layer\, placed in the back\, is an abstract panel that supports the realistic layers above signifying the ultimate unknowability of reality that underpins all perception. These multiple sheets of acrylic record a period of time\, experience and memory and acknowledge that all these perceptions are illusory. Richard Vine\, managing editor of Art in America has written that\, “although the results are deceptively traditional-looking landscapes\, the process and the pictorial technique are quietly radical.”
